In this article, we study a new class of non negative distributions generated by the symmetric distributions around zero. For the special case of the distribution generated using the normal distribution, properties like moments generating function, stochastic representation, reliability connections, and inference aspects using methods of moments and maximum likelihood are studied. Moreover, a real data set is analyzed, illustrating the fact that good fits can result.  相似文献

In this paper, the authors introduce a class of distributions known as complex elliptically symmetric distributions. The complex multivariate normal and complex multivariate t distributions are members of this class. Various properties of the complex elliptically symmetric distributions are studied. Finally, the robustness of certain test procedures are discussed when the assumption of complex multivariate normality is violated but the underlying distribution still belongs to the class of elliptically symmetric distributions.  相似文献

Abstract

Balakrishnan et al. proposed a two-piece skew logistic distribution by making use of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of half distributions as the building block, to give rise to an asymmetric family of two-piece distributions, through the inclusion of a single shape parameter. This paper proposes the construction of asymmetric families of two-piece distributions by making use of quantile functions of symmetric distributions as building blocks. This proposition will enable the derivation of a general formula for the L-moments of two-piece distributions. Examples will be presented, where the logistic, normal, Student’s t(2) and hyperbolic secant distributions are considered.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the Capital Asset Pricing Model under Elliptical (symmetric) Distributions. This class of distributions, which contains the normal distribution, t, contaminated normal and power exponential, among others, offers a more flexible framework for modelling asset prices or returns. In order to analyze the sensibility to possible outliers and/or atypical returns of the maximum likelihood estimators, the local influence method was implemented. The results are illustrated by using a set of shares from companies who trade in the Chilean Stock Market. Our main conclusion is that symmetric distributions having heavier tails than those of the normal distribution, especially the t distribution with small degrees of freedom, show a better fit and allow the reduction of the influence of atypical returns in the maximum likelihood estimators.  相似文献

A characterization of a symmetric probability density function based on certain properties of its associated skewed family is presented. This characterization is then applied to various well-known distributions.  相似文献

Skew-normal/independent distributions are a class of asymmetric thick-tailed distributions that include the skew-normal distribution as a special case. In this paper, we explore the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to develop a Bayesian analysis in multivariate measurement errors models. We propose the use of skew-normal/independent distributions to model the unobserved value of the covariates (latent variable) and symmetric normal/independent distributions for the random errors term, providing an appealing robust alternative to the usual symmetric process in multivariate measurement errors models. Among the distributions that belong to this class of distributions, we examine univariate and multivariate versions of the skew-normal, skew-t, skew-slash and skew-contaminated normal distributions. The results and methods are applied to a real data set.  相似文献

The majority of the existing literature on model-based clustering deals with symmetric components. In some cases, especially when dealing with skewed subpopulations, the estimate of the number of groups can be misleading; if symmetric components are assumed we need more than one component to describe an asymmetric group. Existing mixture models, based on multivariate normal distributions and multivariate t distributions, try to fit symmetric distributions, i.e. they fit symmetric clusters. In the present paper, we propose the use of finite mixtures of the normal inverse Gaussian distribution (and its multivariate extensions). Such finite mixture models start from a density that allows for skewness and fat tails, generalize the existing models, are tractable and have desirable properties. We examine both the univariate case, to gain insight, and the multivariate case, which is more useful in real applications. EM type algorithms are described for fitting the models. Real data examples are used to demonstrate the potential of the new model in comparison with existing ones.  相似文献

A new rich class of generalized two-sided power (TSP) distributions, where their density functions are expressed in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, is introduced and studied. In this class, the symmetric distributions are supported by finite intervals and have normal shape densities. Our study on TSP distributions also leads us to a new class of discrete distributions on {0, 1, …, k}. In addition, a new numerical method for parameter estimation using moments is given.  相似文献

In this article, we give a new family of univariate distributions generated by the Logistic random variable. A special case of this family is the Logistic-Uniform distribution. We show that the Logistic-Uniform distribution provides great flexibility in modeling for symmetric, negatively and positively skewed, bathtub-shaped, “J”-shaped, and reverse “J”-shaped distributions. We discuss simulation issues, estimation by the methods of moments, maximum likelihood, and the new method of minimum spacing distance estimator. We also derive Shannon entropy and asymptotic distribution of the extreme order statistics of this distribution. The new distribution can be used effectively in the analysis of survival data since the hazard function of the distribution can be “J,” bathtub, and concave-convex shaped. The usefulness of the new distribution is illustrated through two real datasets by showing that it is more flexible in analyzing the data than the Beta Generalized-Exponential, Beta-Exponential, Beta-Normal, Beta-Laplace, Beta Generalized half-Normal, β-Birnbaum-Saunders, Gamma-Uniform, Beta Generalized Pareto, Beta Modified Weibull, Beta-Pareto, Generalized Modified Weibull, Beta-Weibull, and Modified-Weibull distributions.  相似文献

In this article, we study some results related to a specific class of distributions, called skew-curved-symmetric family of distributions that depends on a parameter controlling the skewness and kurtosis at the same time. Special elements of this family which are studied include symmetric and well-known asymmetric distributions. General results are given for the score function and the observed information matrix. It is shown that the observed information matrix is always singular for some special cases. We illustrate the flexibility of this class of distributions with an application to a real dataset on characteristics of Australian athletes.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the statistical inference based on the Bayesian approach for regression models with the assumption that independent additive errors follow normal, Student-t, slash, contaminated normal, Laplace or symmetric hyperbolic distribution, where both location and dispersion parameters of the response variable distribution include nonparametric additive components approximated by B-splines. This class of models provides a rich set of symmetric distributions for the model error. Some of these distributions have heavier or lighter tails than the normal as well as different levels of kurtosis. In order to draw samples of the posterior distribution of the interest parameters, we propose an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, which combines Gibbs sampler and Metropolis–Hastings algorithms. The performance of the proposed MCMC algorithm is assessed through simulation experiments. We apply the proposed methodology to a real data set. The proposed methodology is implemented in the R package BayesGESM using the function gesm().  相似文献

A single parametric form is given for the symmetric distributions in the Pearson system with finite variance. In effect, these are Student's t-distributions with ν > 2 and all centered symmetric beta distributions. A different parametrization allows the inclusion of the t-distributions with ν ≤2 at the expense of symmetric beta distributions with a low shape parameter.  相似文献

A necessary and sufficient condition that a continuous, positive random variable follow a gamma distribution is given in terms of any one of its conditional finite moments and an expression involving its failure rate. The results are then used to develop a characterization for a mixture of two gamma distributions. The general results about characterization of a mixture of gamma distributions yield several special cases that have appeared separately in recent literature, including characterization of a single exponential distribution, characterization of a single gamma distribution (in terms of either first or second moments) and a sufficient condition for a mixture of two exponential distributions (in terms of first moments). The condition in this last result is shown to be necessary also. Numerous other cases are possible, using different choices for distribution parameters along with a selection of the mixing parameter, for either individual or mixtures of distributions. Various characterizations can be expressed using higher order moments, too.  相似文献

The purpose of the paper, is to explain how recent advances in Markov Chain Monte Carlo integration can facilitate the routine Bayesian analysis of the linear model when the prior distribution is completely user dependent. The method is based on a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm with a Student-t source distribution that can generate posterior moments as well as marginal posterior densities for model parameters. The method is illustrated with numerical examples where the combination of prior and likelihood information leads to multimodal posteriors due to prior-likelihood conflicts, and to cases where prior information can be summarized by symmetric stable Paretian distributions.  相似文献

In this work, we study the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem for the parameters of the two-piece (TP) distribution based on the scale mixtures of normal (SMN) distributions. This is a family of skewed distributions that also includes the scales mixtures of normal class, and is flexible enough for modeling symmetric and asymmetric data. The ML estimates of the proposed model parameters are obtained via an expectation-maximization (EM)-type algorithm.  相似文献

The consequences of substituting the denominator Q 3(p)  −  Q 1(p) by Q 2  −  Q 1(p) in Groeneveld’s class of quantile measures of kurtosis (γ 2(p)) for symmetric distributions, are explored using the symmetric influence function. The relationship between the measure γ 2(p) and the alternative class of kurtosis measures κ2(p) is derived together with the relationship between their influence functions. The Laplace, Logistic, symmetric Two-sided Power, Tukey and Beta distributions are considered in the examples in order to discuss the results obtained pertaining to unimodal, heavy tailed, bounded domain and U-shaped distributions. The authors thank the referee for the careful review.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an innovative method for constructing proper priors for the skewness (shape) parameter in the skew‐symmetric family of distributions. The proposed method is based on assigning a prior distribution on the perturbation effect of the shape parameter, which is quantified in terms of the total variation distance. We discuss strategies to translate prior beliefs about the asymmetry of the data into an informative prior distribution of this class. We show via a Monte Carlo simulation study that our non‐informative priors induce posterior distributions with good frequentist properties, similar to those of the Jeffreys prior. Our informative priors yield better results than their competitors from the literature. We also propose a scale‐invariant and location‐invariant prior structure for models with unknown location and scale parameters and provide sufficient conditions for the propriety of the corresponding posterior distribution. Illustrative examples are presented using simulated and real data.  相似文献

Summary.  We introduce the directionally dispersed class of multivariate distributions, a generalization of the elliptical class. By allowing dispersion of multivariate random variables to vary with direction it is possible to generate a very wide and flexible class of distributions. Directionally dispersed distributions have a simple form for their density, which extends a spherically symmetric density function by including a function D modelling directional dispersion. Under a mild condition, the class of distributions is shown to preserve both unimodality and moment existence. By adequately defining D , it is possible to generate skewed distributions. Using spline models on hyperspheres, we suggest a very flexible, yet practical, implementation for modelling directional dispersion in any dimension. Finally, we use the new class of distributions in a Bayesian regression set-up and analyse the distributions of a set of biomedical measurements and a sample of US manufacturing firms.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

It is well known that the Hodges–Lehmann estimator is asymptotically efficient for the location parameter of the logistic distribution. In this article we give a simple and direct proof that this property also characterizes the logistic between all the symmetric location distributions under mild conditions. Using pseudolikelihood, we also show how to find from the Hodges–Lehmann estimator an asymptotically efficient estimator of the scale parameter of the logistic distribution.  相似文献
