In this article, we study the SB-robustness of various estimators of the mean direction (μ) and the concentration parameter (ρ) of the wrapped normal distribution. The functional corresponding to the sample mean direction is seen to be not SB-robust as an estimator of μ at the family of wrapped normal distributions with varying ρ, whereas the γ-trimmed mean direction is SB-robust at the same family of distributions for the different dispersion measures considered in this article. We also study the SB-robustness of the moment estimator of ρ and also that for a newly introduced trimmed estimator of ρ.  相似文献

In this paper we study the robustness of the likelihood ratio, circular mean and circular trimmed mean test functionals in the context of tests of hypotheses regarding the mean direction of circular normal and wrapped normal distributions. We compute the level and power breakdown properties of the three test functionals and compare them. We find that the circular trimmed mean test functional has the best robustness properties for both the above-mentioned distributions. The level and power properties of the test statistics corresponding to these functionals are also studied. Two examples with real data are given for illustration. We also consider the problem of testing the mean direction of the von-Mises–Fisher distribution on the unit sphere and explore the robustness properties of the spherical mean direction and likelihood ratio test functionals.  相似文献

The distribution of the estimated mean of the nonstandard mixture of distributions that has a discrete probability mass at zero and a gamma distribution for positive values is derived. Furthermore, for the studied nonstandard mixture of distributions, the distribution of the standardized statistic (estimator - true mean)/standard deviation of estimator is derived. The results are used to study the accuracy of the confidence interval for the mean based on a large sample approximation. Quantiles for the standardized statistic are also calculated.  相似文献

The ordinary-G class of distributions is defined to have the cumulative distribution function (cdf) as the value of the cdf of the ordinary distribution F whose range is the unit interval at G, that is, F(G), and it generalizes the ordinary distribution. In this work, we consider the standard two-sided power distribution to define other classes like the beta-G and the Kumaraswamy-G classes. We extend the idea of two-sidedness to other ordinary distributions like normal. After studying the basic properties of the new class in general setting, we consider the two-sided generalized normal distribution with maximum likelihood estimation procedure.  相似文献

An unbiased estimator for the common mean of k normal distributions is suggested. A necessary and sufficient condition for the estimator Lo have a smaller variance than each sample mean is given. In the case of estimating the common mean vector of k p-variate (p ≤ 3) normal distributions a combined unbiased estimator may be used. We give a class of estimators which are better than the combined estimator when the loss is quadratic and the restriction of unbiasedness is removed.  相似文献

In this note we derive sharp lower and upper bounds for the variance of the Graybill-Deal estimator of the common mean of two normal distributions with unknown variances when the sample sizes are not necessarily equal. We also derive similar bounds for the variance of the Brown-Cohen (1974) T a(1) class of unbiased es-timators to which the Graybill-Deal estimator belongs. Further, we illustrate the sharpness of the bounds by numerical computations in the case of the Graybill-Deal estimator.  相似文献

In this paper, we first provide conditions for preservation of the mean residual life (mrl) order under weighting. Then we apply the obtained results to establish our results about preservation of the decreasing mrl class by weighted distributions. In addition, we present some results for comparing the original random variable to its weighted version in terms of the mrl order. Also, some examples are given to illustrate the results.  相似文献

Summary.  We introduce the directionally dispersed class of multivariate distributions, a generalization of the elliptical class. By allowing dispersion of multivariate random variables to vary with direction it is possible to generate a very wide and flexible class of distributions. Directionally dispersed distributions have a simple form for their density, which extends a spherically symmetric density function by including a function D modelling directional dispersion. Under a mild condition, the class of distributions is shown to preserve both unimodality and moment existence. By adequately defining D , it is possible to generate skewed distributions. Using spline models on hyperspheres, we suggest a very flexible, yet practical, implementation for modelling directional dispersion in any dimension. Finally, we use the new class of distributions in a Bayesian regression set-up and analyse the distributions of a set of biomedical measurements and a sample of US manufacturing firms.  相似文献

The trimmed mean is a method of dealing with patient dropout in clinical trials that considers early discontinuation of treatment a bad outcome rather than leading to missing data. The present investigation is the first comprehensive assessment of the approach across a broad set of simulated clinical trial scenarios. In the trimmed mean approach, all patients who discontinue treatment prior to the primary endpoint are excluded from analysis by trimming an equal percentage of bad outcomes from each treatment arm. The untrimmed values are used to calculated means or mean changes. An explicit intent of trimming is to favor the group with lower dropout because having more completers is a beneficial effect of the drug, or conversely, higher dropout is a bad effect. In the simulation study, difference between treatments estimated from trimmed means was greater than the corresponding effects estimated from untrimmed means when dropout favored the experimental group, and vice versa. The trimmed mean estimates a unique estimand. Therefore, comparisons with other methods are difficult to interpret and the utility of the trimmed mean hinges on the reasonableness of its assumptions: dropout is an equally bad outcome in all patients, and adherence decisions in the trial are sufficiently similar to clinical practice in order to generalize the results. Trimming might be applicable to other inter‐current events such as switching to or adding rescue medicine. Given the well‐known biases in some methods that estimate effectiveness, such as baseline observation carried forward and non‐responder imputation, the trimmed mean may be a useful alternative when its assumptions are justifiable.  相似文献

The way of investigating a distribution knowing its interesting properties might be often inadequate when the shapes of two distributions are almost similar. In each of these circumstances, the accurate decision about the genesis of a random sample from any of the two parent distributions will be very much ambiguous even with the availability of the existing testing procedure of the circular data. A sequential discrimination procedure has been suggested which is also invariant to the sample size. The performance of the proposed discrimination procedure has been evaluated by checking its capability of detecting the genesis of the known samples from the two identically shaped wrapped distributions.  相似文献

Given two random samples of equal size from two normal distributions with common mean but possibly different variances, we examine the sampling performance of the pre-test estimator for the common mean after a preliminary test for equality of variances. It is shown that when the alternative in the pretest is one-sided, the Graybill-Deal estimator is dominated by the pre-test estimator if the critical value is chosen appropriately. It is also shown that all estimators, the grand mean, the Graybill-Deal estimator and the pre-test estimator, are admissible when the alternative in the pre-test is two-sided. The optimal critical values in the two-sided pre-test are sought based on the minimax regret and the minimum average risk criteria, and it is shown that the Graybill-Deal estimator is most preferable under the minimum average risk criterion when the alternative in the pre-test is two-sided.  相似文献

Mixtures of skewed distributions (univariate and bivariate) provide flexible models. An alternative modeling approach involves distributions with skewed conditional distributions and mixtures of such distributions. We consider the interrelationships between such models. Examples are provided to show that several skewed distributions already considered in the literature can be viewed as having been constructed via a combination of mixing and skewing.  相似文献

A problem of testing of hypotheses on the mean vector of a multivariate normal distribution with unknown and positive definite covariance matrix is considered when a sample with a special, though not unusual, pattern of missing observations from that population is available. The approximate percentage points of the test statistic are obtained and their accuracy has been checked by comparing them with some exact percentage points which are calculated for complete samples and some special incomplete samples. The approximate percentage points are in good agreement with exact percentage points. The above work is extended to the problem of testing the hypothesis of equality of two mean vectors of two multivariate normal distributions with the same, unknown covariance matrix  相似文献

In this article we introduce a new likelihood based method, called the likelihood integrated method, which is distinct from the well-known integrated likelihood method. We use the likelihood integrated to propose a simple exploratory graphical analysis for the change point problem in the context of directional data. The method is applied to analysis of two real life data sets. The results obtained by application of this simple method are seen to be quite similar to those obtained earlier by different formal methods in most cases. A small simulation study is conducted to assess the effectiveness of this procedure in indicating presence of change point.  相似文献

For the lifetime (or negative) exponential distribution, the trimmed likelihood estimator has been shown to be explicit in the form of a β‐trimmed mean which is representable as an estimating functional that is both weakly continuous and Fréchet differentiable and hence qualitatively robust at the parametric model. It also has high efficiency at the model. The robustness is in contrast to the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) involving the usual mean which is not robust to contamination in the upper tail of the distribution. When there is known right censoring, it may be perceived that the MLE which is the most asymptotically efficient estimator may be protected from the effects of ‘outliers’ due to censoring. We demonstrate that this is not the case generally, and in fact, based on the functional form of the estimators, suggest a hybrid defined estimator that incorporates the best features of both the MLE and the β‐trimmed mean. Additionally, we study the pure trimmed likelihood estimator for censored data and show that it can be easily calculated and that the censored observations are not always trimmed. The different trimmed estimators are compared by a modest simulation study.  相似文献

This article presents a review and comparison of the most important expanded families of distributions. We set the essential requirements by which an expanding family can fit any dataset successfully. A new method is proposed to construct families, which fulfill these essential requirements. Consequently, two families are suggested, which are more tractable than many other known families and possess very wide range of the indices of skewness and kurtosis. In this paper, we propose two multimodal circular distributions which are suitable for modeling circular data sets with two or more modes. Both distributions belong to the regular exponential family of distributions and are considered as extensions of the von Mises distribution. Hence, they possess the highly desirable properties, such as the existence of non-trivial sufficient statistics and optimal inferences for their parameters. Fine particulates (PM2.5) are generally emitted from activities such as industrial and residential combustion and from vehicle exhaust. We illustrate the utility of our proposed models using a real data set consisting of fine particulates (PM2.5) pollutant levels in Houston region during Fall season in 2019. Our results provide a strong evidence that its diurnal pattern exhibits four modes; two peaks during morning and evening rush hours and two peaks in between.  相似文献

The author introduces new statistics suited for testing uniformity of circular distributions and powerful against multimodal alternatives. One of them has a simple expression in terms of the geometric mean of the sample of chord lengths. The others belong to a family indexed by a continuous parameter. The asymptotic distributions under the null hypothesis are derived. We compare the power of the new tests against Stephens's alternatives with those of Ajne, Watson, and Hermans‐Rasson's tests. Some of the new tests are the most powerful when the alternative has three or four modes. A heuristic justification of this feature is given.
