In statistical modelling, it is often of interest to evaluate non‐negative quantities that capture heterogeneity in the population such as variances, mixing proportions and dispersion parameters. In instances of covariate‐dependent heterogeneity, the implied homogeneity hypotheses are nonstandard and existing inferential techniques are not applicable. In this paper, we develop a quasi‐score test statistic to evaluate homogeneity against heterogeneity that varies with a covariate profile through a regression model. We establish the limiting null distribution of the proposed test as a functional of mixtures of chi‐square processes. The methodology does not require the full distribution of the data to be entirely specified. Instead, a general estimating function for a finite dimensional component of the model, that is, of interest is assumed but other characteristics of the population are left completely unspecified. We apply the methodology to evaluate the excess zero proportion in zero‐inflated models for count data. Our numerical simulations show that the proposed test can greatly improve efficiency over tests of homogeneity that neglect covariate information under the alternative hypothesis. An empirical application to dental caries indices demonstrates the importance and practical utility of the methodology in detecting excess zeros in the data.  相似文献

The score test statistic from the observed information is easy to compute numerically. Its large sample distribution under the null hypothesis is well known and is equivalent to that of the score test based on the expected information, the likelihood‐ratio test and the Wald test. However, several authors have noted that under the alternative hypothesis this no longer holds and in particular the score statistic from the observed information can take negative values. We extend the anthology on the score test to a problem of interest in ecology when studying species occurrence. This is the comparison of two zero‐inflated binomial random variables from two independent samples under imperfect detection. An analysis of eigenvalues associated with the score test in this setting assists in understanding why using the observed information matrix in the score test can be problematic. We demonstrate through a combination of simulations and theoretical analysis that the power of the score test calculated under the observed information decreases as the populations being compared become more dissimilar. In particular, the score test based on the observed information is inconsistent. Finally, we propose a modified rule that rejects the null hypothesis when the score statistic is computed using the observed information is negative or is larger than the usual chi‐square cut‐off. In simulations in our setting this has power that is comparable to the Wald and likelihood ratio tests and consistency is largely restored. Our new test is easy to use and inference is possible. We consider a recurrent event wherein the inter‐event times are independent and identically distributed with a common absolutely continuous distribution function F. In this article, interest is in the problem of testing the null hypothesis that F belongs to some parametric family where the q‐dimensional parameter is unknown. We propose a general Chi‐squared test in which cell boundaries are data dependent. An estimator of the parameter obtained by minimizing a quadratic form resulting from a properly scaled vector of differences between Observed and Expected frequencies is used to construct the test. This estimator is known as the minimum chi‐square estimator. Large sample properties of the proposed test statistic are established using empirical processes tools. A simulation study is conducted to assess the performance of the test under parameter misspecification, and our procedures are applied to a fleet of Boeing 720 jet planes' air conditioning system failures.  相似文献

The broken stick model is a model of the abundance of species in a habitat, and it has been widely extended. In this paper, we present results from exploratory data analysis of this model. To obtain some of the statistics, we formulate the broken stick model as a probability distribution function based on the same model, and we provide an expression for the cumulative distribution function, which is needed to obtain the results from exploratory data analysis. The inequalities we present are useful in ecological studies that apply broken stick models. These results are also useful for testing the goodness of fit of the broken stick model as an alternative to the chi square test, which has often been the main test used. Therefore, these results may be used in several alternative and complementary ways for testing the goodness of fit of the broken stick model.  相似文献

In many applications of generalized linear mixed models to clustered correlated or longitudinal data, often we are interested in testing whether a random effects variance component is zero. The usual asymptotic mixture of chi‐square distributions of the score statistic for testing constrained variance components does not necessarily hold. In this article, the author proposes and explores a parametric bootstrap test that appears to be valid based on its estimated level of significance under the null hypothesis. Results from a simulation study indicate that the bootstrap test has a level much closer to the nominal one while the asymptotic test is conservative, and is more powerful than the usual asymptotic score test based on a mixture of chi‐squares. The proposed bootstrap test is illustrated using two sets of real‐life data obtained from clinical trials. The Canadian Journal of Statistics © 2009 Statistical Society of Canada  相似文献

The Pearson chi‐squared statistic for testing the equality of two multinomial populations when the categories are nominal is much less appropriate for ordinal categories. Test statistics typically used in this context are based on scorings of the ordinal levels, but the results of these tests are highly dependent on the choice of scores. The authors propose a test which naturally modifies the Pearson chi‐squared statistic to incorporate the ordinal information. The proposed test statistic does not depend on the scores and under the null hypothesis of equality of populations, it is asymptotically equivalent to the likelihood ratio test against the alternative of two‐sided likelihood ratio ordering.  相似文献

Lachenbruch ( 1976 , 2001 ) introduced two‐part tests for comparison of two means in zero‐inflated continuous data. We are extending this approach and compare k independent distributions (by comparing their means, either overall or the departure from equal proportion of zeros and equal means of nonzero values) by introducing two tests: a two‐part Wald test and a two‐part likelihood ratio test. If the continuous part of the distributions is lognormal then the proposed two test statistics have asymptotically chi‐square distribution with $2(k-1)$ degrees of freedom. A simulation study was conducted to compare the performance of the proposed tests with several well‐known tests such as ANOVA, Welch ( 1951 ), Brown & Forsythe ( 1974 ), Kruskal–Wallis, and one‐part Wald test proposed by Tu & Zhou ( 1999 ). Results indicate that the proposed tests keep the nominal type I error and have consistently best power among all tests being compared. An application to rainfall data is provided as an example. The purpose of this article is threefold. First, variance components testing for ANOVA ‐type mixed models is considered, in which response may not be divided into independent sub‐vectors, whereas most of existing methods are for models where response can be divided into independent sub‐vectors. Second, testing that a certain subset of variance components is zero. Third, as normality is often violated in practice, it is desirable to construct tests under very mild assumptions. To achieve these goals, an adaptive difference‐based test and an adaptive trace‐based test are constructed. The test statistics are asymptotically normal under the null hypothesis, are consistent against all global alternatives and can detect local alternatives distinct from the null at a rate as close to n ? 1 ∕ 2 as possible with n being the sample size. Moreover, when the dimensions of variance components in different sets are bounded, we develop a test with chi‐square as its limiting null distribution. The finite sample performance of the tests is examined via simulations, and a real data set is analysed for illustration.  相似文献

The authors propose a two‐state continuous‐time semi‐Markov model for an unobservable alternating binary process. Another process is observed at discrete time points that may misclassify the true state of the process of interest. To estimate the model's parameters, the authors propose a minimum Pearson chi‐square type estimating approach based on approximated joint probabilities when the true process is in equilibrium. Three consecutive observations are required to have sufficient degrees of freedom to perform estimation. The methodology is demonstrated on parasitic infection data with exponential and gamma sojourn time distributions.  相似文献

The authors study the empirical likelihood method for linear regression models. They show that when missing responses are imputed using least squares predictors, the empirical log‐likelihood ratio is asymptotically a weighted sum of chi‐square variables with unknown weights. They obtain an adjusted empirical log‐likelihood ratio which is asymptotically standard chi‐square and hence can be used to construct confidence regions. They also obtain a bootstrap empirical log‐likelihood ratio and use its distribution to approximate that of the empirical log‐likelihood ratio. A simulation study indicates that the proposed methods are comparable in terms of coverage probabilities and average lengths of confidence intervals, and perform better than a normal approximation based method.  相似文献

Frame corrections have been studied in census applications for a long time. One very promising method is dual system estimation, which is based on capture–recapture models. These methods have been applied recently in the USA, England, Israel and Switzerland. In order to gain information on subgroups of the population, structure preserving estimators can be applied [i.e. structure preserving estimation (SPREE) and generalized SPREE]. The present paper extends the SPREE approach with an alternative distance function, the chi‐square. The new method has shown improved estimates in our application with very small domains. A comparative study based on a large‐scale Monte Carlo simulation elaborates on advantages and disadvantages of the estimators in the context of the German register‐assisted Census 2011.  相似文献

Testing the Equality of Covariance Operators in Functional Samples   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. We propose a non‐parametric test for the equality of the covariance structures in two functional samples. The test statistic has a chi‐square asymptotic distribution with a known number of degrees of freedom, which depends on the level of dimension reduction needed to represent the data. Detailed analysis of the asymptotic properties is developed. Finite sample perfo‐rmance is examined by a simulation study and an application to egg‐laying curves of fruit flies.  相似文献

A general class of rank statistics based on the characteristic function is introduced for testing goodness‐of‐fit hypotheses about the copula of a continuous random vector. These statistics are defined as L 2 weighted functional distances between a nonparametric estimator and a semi‐parametric estimator of the characteristic function associated with a copula. It is shown that these statistics behave asymptotically as degenerate V ‐statistics of order four and that the limit distributions have representations in terms of weighted sums of independent chi‐square variables. The consistency of the tests against general alternatives is established and an asymptotically valid parametric bootstrap is suggested for the computation of the critical values of the tests. The behaviour of the new tests in small and moderate sample sizes is investigated with the help of simulations and compared with a competing test based on the empirical copula. Finally, the methodology is illustrated on a five‐dimensional data set.  相似文献

The authors show how an adjusted pseudo‐empirical likelihood ratio statistic that is asymptotically distributed as a chi‐square random variable can be used to construct confidence intervals for a finite population mean or a finite population distribution function from complex survey samples. They consider both non‐stratified and stratified sampling designs, with or without auxiliary information. They examine the behaviour of estimates of the mean and the distribution function at specific points using simulations calling on the Rao‐Sampford method of unequal probability sampling without replacement. They conclude that the pseudo‐empirical likelihood ratio confidence intervals are superior to those based on the normal approximation, whether in terms of coverage probability, tail error rates or average length of the intervals.  相似文献

The authors consider the empirical likelihood method for the regression model of mean quality‐adjusted lifetime with right censoring. They show that an empirical log‐likelihood ratio for the vector of the regression parameters is asymptotically a weighted sum of independent chi‐squared random variables. They adjust this empirical log‐likelihood ratio so that the limiting distribution is a standard chi‐square and construct corresponding confidence regions. Simulation studies lead them to conclude that empirical likelihood methods outperform the normal approximation methods in terms of coverage probability. They illustrate their methods with a data example from a breast cancer clinical trial study.  相似文献

Test statistics are developed for comparing vectors of proportions obtained from several independent two–stage cluster samples. It is assumed that clusters are selected with probability proportional to size for each sample. Wald's general method of constructing quadratic forms is used to obtain a large sample chi–square test. More easily evaluted chi–square tests are derived from the Dirichlet–multinnomial model. Corresponding goodness–of–fit test for the Dirichlet–multinomial model are also derived.  相似文献

For binary endpoints, the required sample size depends not only on the known values of significance level, power and clinically relevant difference but also on the overall event rate. However, the overall event rate may vary considerably between studies and, as a consequence, the assumptions made in the planning phase on this nuisance parameter are to a great extent uncertain. The internal pilot study design is an appealing strategy to deal with this problem. Here, the overall event probability is estimated during the ongoing trial based on the pooled data of both treatment groups and, if necessary, the sample size is adjusted accordingly. From a regulatory viewpoint, besides preserving blindness it is required that eventual consequences for the Type I error rate should be explained. We present analytical computations of the actual Type I error rate for the internal pilot study design with binary endpoints and compare them with the actual level of the chi‐square test for the fixed sample size design. A method is given that permits control of the specified significance level for the chi‐square test under blinded sample size recalculation. Furthermore, the properties of the procedure with respect to power and expected sample size are assessed. Throughout the paper, both the situation of equal sample size per group and unequal allocation ratio are considered. The method is illustrated with application to a clinical trial in depression. In their recent work, Jiang and Yang studied six classical Likelihood Ratio Test statistics under high‐dimensional setting. Assuming that a random sample of size n is observed from a p‐dimensional normal population, they derive the central limit theorems (CLTs) when p and n are proportional to each other, which are different from the classical chi‐square limits as n goes to infinity, while p remains fixed. In this paper, by developing a new tool, we prove that the mentioned six CLTs hold in a more applicable setting: p goes to infinity, and p can be very close to n. This is an almost sufficient and necessary condition for the CLTs. Simulations of histograms, comparisons on sizes and powers with those in the classical chi‐square approximations and discussions are presented afterwards.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that the likelihood ratio statistic for testing the null hypothesis that data arise from a homoscedastic normal mixture distribution versus the alternative hypothesis that data arise from a heteroscedastic normal mixture distribution has an asymptotic χ 2 reference distribution with degrees of freedom equal to the difference in the number of parameters being estimated under the alternative and null models under some regularity conditions. Simulations show that the χ 2 reference distribution will give a reasonable approximation for the likelihood ratio test only when the sample size is 2000 or more and the mixture components are well separated when the restrictions suggested by Hathaway (Ann. Stat. 13:795–800, 1985) are imposed on the component variances to ensure that the likelihood is bounded under the alternative distribution. For small and medium sample sizes, parametric bootstrap tests appear to work well for determining whether data arise from a normal mixture with equal variances or a normal mixture with unequal variances.  相似文献

Traditionally, noninferiority hypotheses have been tested using a frequentist method with a fixed margin. Given that information for the control group is often available from previous studies, it is interesting to consider a Bayesian approach in which information is “borrowed” for the control group to improve efficiency. However, construction of an appropriate informative prior can be challenging. In this paper, we consider a hybrid Bayesian approach for testing noninferiority hypotheses in studies with a binary endpoint. To account for heterogeneity between the historical information and the current trial for the control group, a dynamic P value–based power prior parameter is proposed to adjust the amount of information borrowed from the historical data. This approach extends the simple test‐then‐pool method to allow a continuous discounting power parameter. An adjusted α level is also proposed to better control the type I error. Simulations are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed method and to make comparisons with other methods including test‐then‐pool and hierarchical modeling. The methods are illustrated with data from vaccine clinical trials.  相似文献
