Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common spinal deformity, affecting perhaps as many as 5% of children. Early recognition of the condition is essential for optimal treatment. A widely used technique for identification is based on a somewhat crude angle measurement from a frontal spinal X-ray. Here, we provide a technique and new summary statistical measures for classifying spinal shape, and present results obtained from clinical X-rays.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A general Bayesian random effects model for analyzing longitudinal mixed correlated continuous and negative binomial responses with and without missing data is presented. This Bayesian model, given some random effects, uses a normal distribution for the continuous response and a negative binomial distribution for the count response. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm is described for estimating the posterior distribution of the parameters. This Bayesian model is illustrated by a simulation study. For sensitivity analysis to investigate the change of parameter estimates with respect to the perturbation from missing at random to not missing at random assumption, the use of posterior curvature is proposed. The model is applied to a medical data, obtained from an observational study on women, where the correlated responses are the negative binomial response of joint damage and continuous response of body mass index. The simultaneous effects of some covariates on both responses are also investigated.  相似文献

Longitudinal data often require a combination of flexible time trends and individual-specific random effects. For example, our methodological developments are motivated by a study on longitudinal body mass index profiles of children collected with the aim to gain a better understanding of factors driving childhood obesity. The high amount of nonlinearity and heterogeneity in these data and the complexity of the data set with a large number of observations, long longitudinal profiles and clusters of observations with specific deviations from the population model make the application challenging and prevent the application of standard growth curve models. We propose a fully Bayesian approach based on Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation techniques that allows for the semiparametric specification of both the trend function and the random effects distribution. Bayesian penalized splines are considered for the former, while a Dirichlet process mixture (DPM) specification allows for an adaptive amount of deviations from normality for the latter. The advantages of such DPM prior structures for random effects are investigated in terms of a simulation study to improve the understanding of the model specification before analyzing the childhood obesity data.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel Bayesian method based on the complex Watson shape distribution that is used in detecting shape differences between the second thoracic vertebrae for two groups of mice, small and large, categorized according to their body weight. Considering the data provided in Johnson et al. (1988), we provide Bayesian methods of estimation as well as highest posterior density (HPD) estimates for modal vertebrae shapes within each group. Finally, we present a classification procedure that can be used in any shape classification experiment, and apply it for categorizing new vertebrae shapes in small or large groups.  相似文献

Psychometric growth curve modeling techniques are used to describe a person’s latent ability and how that ability changes over time based on a specific measurement instrument. However, the same instrument cannot always be used over a period of time to measure that latent ability. This is often the case when measuring traits longitudinally in children. Reasons may be that over time some measurement tools that were difficult for young children become too easy as they age resulting in floor effects or ceiling effects or both. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model for such a scenario. Within the Bayesian model we combine information from multiple instruments used at different age ranges and having different scoring schemes to examine growth in latent ability over time. The model includes between-subject variance and within-subject variance and does not require linking item specific difficulty between the measurement tools. The model’s utility is demonstrated on a study of language ability in children from ages one to ten who are hard of hearing where measurement tool specific growth and subject-specific growth are shown in addition to a group level latent growth curve comparing the hard of hearing children to children with normal hearing.KEYWORDS: Bayesian hierarchical models, psychometric modeling, language ability, growth curve modeling, longitudinal analysis  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Quantile regression models, as an important tool in practice, can describe effects of risk factors on the entire conditional distribution of the response variable with its estimates robust to outliers. However, there is few discussion on quantile regression for longitudinal data with both missing responses and measurement errors, which are commonly seen in practice. We develop a weighted and bias-corrected quantile loss function for the quantile regression with longitudinal data, which allows both missingness and measurement errors. Additionally, we establish the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator. Simulation studies demonstrate the expected performance in correcting the bias resulted from missingness and measurement errors. Finally, we investigate the Lifestyle Education for Activity and Nutrition study and confirm the effective of intervention in producing weight loss after nine month at the high quantile.  相似文献

Progressively censored data from a classical Pareto distribution are to be used to make inferences about its shape and precision parameters and the reliability function. An approximation form due to Tierney and Kadane (1986) is used for obtaining the Bayes estimates. Bayesian prediction of further observations from this distribution is also considered. When the Bayesian approach is concerned, conjugate priors for either the one or the two parameters cases are considered. To illustrate the given procedures, a numerical example and a simulation study are given.  相似文献

Exponential distribution has an extensive application in reliability. Introducing shape parameter to this distribution have produced various distribution functions. In their study in 2009, Gupta and Kundu brought another distribution function using Azzalini's method, which is applicable in reliability and named as weighted exponential (WE) distribution. The parameters of this distribution function have been recently estimated by the above two authors in classical statistics. In this paper, Bayesian estimates of the parameters are derived. To achieve this purpose we use Lindley's approximation method for the integrals that cannot be solved in closed form. Furthermore, a Gibbs sampling procedure is used to draw Markov chain Monte Carlo samples from the posterior distribution indirectly and then the Bayes estimates of parameters are derived. The estimation of reliability and hazard functions are also discussed. At the end of the paper, some comparisons between classical and Bayesian estimation methods are studied by using Monte Carlo simulation study. The simulation study incorporates complete and Type-II censored samples.  相似文献

In this paper, E-Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian estimations of the shape parameter, when the underlying distribution belongs to the proportional reversed hazard rate model, are considered. Maximum likelihood, Bayesian and E-Bayesian estimates of the unknown parameter and reliability function are obtained based on record values. The Bayesian estimates are derived based on squared error and linear–exponential loss functions. It is pointed out that some previously obtained order relations of E-Bayesian estimates are inadequate and these results are improved. The relationship between E-Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian estimations is obtained under the same loss functions. The comparison of the derived estimates is carried out by using Monte Carlo simulations. A real data set is analysed for an illustration of the findings.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with developing a latent class mixture modelling technique which efficiently exploits data from serological surveys aiming to investigate past exposures to infections resulting in long-term or life-lasting immunity. Mixture components featured by antibody assays’ distribution are associated with the serological groups in the population, whilst the probability mixture that an individual belongs to the positive serological group is regarded as an age-dependent prevalence. The latter embeds a mechanistic model which explains the infection process, accounting for heterogeneities, contact patterns in the population and incorporating elements of study design. A Bayesian framework for statistical inference using Markov chain Monte Carlo estimation methods naturally accommodates missing responses in the data and allows straightforward assessement of uncertainties in nonlinear models. The applicability of the method is illustrated by investigating past exposure to varicella zoster virus infection in pre-school children, using data from a large scale UK cohort study which included a cross-sectional serological survey based on oral fluid samples.  相似文献

We employ a hierarchical Bayesian method with exchangeable prior distributions to estimate and compare similar nondecreasing response curves. A Dirichlet process distribution is assigned to each of the response curves as a first stage prior. A second stage prior is then used to model the hyperparameters. We define parameters which will be used to compare the response curves. A Markov chain Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the resulting Bayesian estimates. To illustrate the methodology, we re-examine data from an experiment designed to test whether experimenter observation influences the ultimatum game. A major restriction of the original analysis was the shape constraint that the present technique allows us to greatly relax. We also consider independent priors and use Bayes factors to compare various models.  相似文献

Chronic kidney disease is a progressive loss of renal function which results in the inability of the kidneys to properly filter waste from the blood. Renal function is usually estimated by the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which decreases with the worsening of the disease. Bayesian longitudinal models with covariates, random effects, serial correlation and measurement error are discussed to analyse the progression of eGFR in first transplanted children taken from a study in València, Spain.  相似文献

A large number of models have been derived from the two-parameter Weibull distribution including the inverse Weibull (IW) model which is found suitable for modeling the complex failure data set. In this paper, we present the Bayesian inference for the mixture of two IW models. For this purpose, the Bayes estimates of the parameters of the mixture model along with their posterior risks using informative as well as the non-informative prior are obtained. These estimates have been attained considering two cases: (a) when the shape parameter is known and (b) when all parameters are unknown. For the former case, Bayes estimates are obtained under three loss functions while for the latter case only the squared error loss function is used. Simulation study is carried out in order to explore numerical aspects of the proposed Bayes estimators. A real-life data set is also presented for both cases, and parameters obtained under case when shape parameter is known are tested through testing of hypothesis procedure.  相似文献

The complex Watson distribution is an important simple distribution on the complex sphere which is used in statistical shape analysis. We describe the density, obtain the integrating constant and provide large sample approximations. Maximum likelihood estimation and hypothesis testing procedures for one and two samples are described. The particular connection with shape analysis is discussed and we consider an application examining shape differences between normal and schizophrenic brains. We make some observations about Bayesian shape inference and finally we describe a more general rotationally symmetric family of distributions.  相似文献

We wish to model pulse wave velocity (PWV) as a function of longitudinal measurements of pulse pressure (PP) at the same and prior visits at which the PWV is measured. A number of approaches are compared. First, we use the PP at the same visit as the PWV in a linear regression model. In addition, we use the average of all available PPs as the explanatory variable in a linear regression model. Next, a two-stage process is applied. The longitudinal PP is modeled using a linear mixed-effects model. This modeled PP is used in the regression model to describe PWV. An approach for using the longitudinal PP data is to obtain a measure of the cumulative burden, the area under the PP curve. This area under the curve is used as an explanatory variable to model PWV. Finally, a joint Bayesian model is constructed similar to the two-stage model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Clustered observations such as longitudinal data are often analysed with generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Approximate Bayesian inference for GLMMs with normally distributed random effects can be done using integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA), which is in general known to yield accurate results. However, INLA is known to be less accurate for GLMMs with binary response. For longitudinal binary response data it is common that patients do not change their health state during the study period. In this case the grouping covariate perfectly predicts a subset of the response, which implies a monotone likelihood with diverging maximum likelihood (ML) estimates for cluster-specific parameters. This is known as quasi-complete separation. In this paper we demonstrate, based on longitudinal data from a randomized clinical trial and two simulations, that the accuracy of INLA decreases with increasing degree of cluster-specific quasi-complete separation. Comparing parameter estimates by INLA, Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling and ML shows that INLA increasingly deviates from the other methods in such a scenario.  相似文献

This paper is motivated from a neurophysiological study of muscle fatigue, in which biomedical researchers are interested in understanding the time-dependent relationships of handgrip force and electromyography measures. A varying coefficient model is appealing here to investigate the dynamic pattern in the longitudinal data. The response variable in the study is continuous but bounded on the standard unit interval (0, 1) over time, while the longitudinal covariates are contaminated with measurement errors. We propose a generalization of varying coefficient models for the longitudinal proportional data with errors-in-covariates. We describe two estimation methods with penalized splines, which are formalized under a Bayesian inferential perspective. The first method is an adaptation of the popular regression calibration approach. The second method is based on a joint likelihood under the hierarchical Bayesian model. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed methods under different scenarios. The analysis of the neurophysiological data is presented to demonstrate the use of the methods.  相似文献

A Bayesian nonparametric model for Taguchi's on-line quality monitoring procedure for attributes is introduced. The proposed model may accommodate the original single shift setting to the more realistic situation of gradual quality deterioration and allows the incorporation of an expert's opinion on the production process. Based on the number of inspections to be carried out until a defective item is found, the Bayesian operation for the distribution function that represents the increasing sequence of defective fractions during a cycle considering a mixture of Dirichlet processes as prior distribution is performed. Bayes estimates for relevant quantities are also obtained.  相似文献

This paper develops Bayesian analysis in the context of progressively Type II censored data from the compound Rayleigh distribution. The maximum likelihood and Bayes estimates along with associated posterior risks are derived for reliability performances under balanced loss functions by assuming continuous priors for parameters of the distribution. A practical example is used to illustrate the estimation methods. A simulation study has been carried out to compare the performance of estimates. The study indicates that Bayesian estimation should be preferred over maximum likelihood estimation. In Bayesian estimation, the balance general entropy loss function can be effectively employed for optimal decision-making.  相似文献

Consider a J-component series system which is put on Accelerated Life Test (ALT) involving K stress variables. First, a general formulation of ALT is provided for log-location-scale family of distributions. A general stress translation function of location parameter of the component log-lifetime distribution is proposed which can accommodate standard ones like Arrhenius, power-rule, log-linear model, etc., as special cases. Later, the component lives are assumed to be independent Weibull random variables with a common shape parameter. A full Bayesian methodology is then developed by letting only the scale parameters of the Weibull component lives depend on the stress variables through the general stress translation function. Priors on all the parameters, namely the stress coefficients and the Weibull shape parameter, are assumed to be log-concave and independent of each other. This assumption is to facilitate Gibbs sampling from the joint posterior. The samples thus generated from the joint posterior is then used to obtain the Bayesian point and interval estimates of the system reliability at usage condition.  相似文献
