Reel Time
Hong Kong director Peter Chan's latest film, Dearest, which is based on true stories of child abduction in China, is definitely a tearjerker. Set in Shenzhen, in southern China's Guangdong Province, Dearest follows a divorced couple, Tian Wenjun (played by Huang Bo) and Lu Xiaojuan (played by Hao Lei). Tian works at a small market stall while his ex-wife is married to a wealthy man. Pengpeng, Tian and Lu's son, is their only common concern. One day, Pengpeng plays with other children in the market. He is distracted by his mother's car, and he runs after her. Suddenly, he is taken away by a stranger, which leaves his parents feeling despair and desperation.  相似文献

Virtual Time
Like space, time takes on different characteristics in the digitized city. The Internet has contributed to a new way of problematizing time as embodied in human agency and social institutions, a time that is produced on a global scale, irrespective of time zones. This essay examines the contours, content and deployment of virtual time and of the cyberweek that it makes possible. It contrasts real time with virtual time to show the malleability of the latter, examines the ways in which the collapse of temporal boundaries and the compression of time-distance have manifested themselves in the cybertiming and flexitiming of the civil week, explores the global and local aspects of the cyberweek, and analyses the practical ramifications of virtual time in the daily life of the digital city.  相似文献

This article explores the phenomenological and socially constructed experience of time during the finite period of the vacation. Temporal routine is considered as a form of social control from which vacations and similar breaks for time off offer opportunities for agency and release. In-depth interviews, participant observation, and a narrative analysis of vacation blogs are used to analyze norms in orientation to time while one is away from select constraints of everyday life. Approaches to time while on vacation are found to fall into two ideal types: those who may ??ignore?? time and find release from schedules and routine, and those who must closely attend to its passage. Influences of duration, frequency and pace are also central in moderating experience.  相似文献

What connects family therapists as a discipline is something rarely looked at. It seems our field is obsessed with highlighting difference which often slips into criticism and attacking the work of colleagues. This patriarchal behaviour invades most family therapy forums, and yet at the same time there is a belief that we have moved away from patriarchal ways of operating. Newcomers to the field experience this confusion somewhat like visiting a ‘Mad Tea Party’.  相似文献

Drawing on interviews with parents of children with complex disabilities in several school systems in a US state, this paper examines how temporal units such as the school day and school year and practices organized around artifacts like clocks and calendars work as ‘devices of temporal distanciation’ to separate children with disabilities from other children and exclude their families from critical relations with schools. The paper focuses on two kinds of effects: the ways differentiated timetables separate children and the ways constructing school time in bounded, discrete units limits the ability of parents and children to make key elements of their lives visible to the school.  相似文献

In this essay we discuss changes in the cultural meaning and significance of time in postmodernism. We begin by examining the experience of time and space in the Middle Ages and its radical alteration following the Renaissance. After a relatively brief period of optimism during the Enlightenment regarding the scientific control over time and space, a new crisis beginning in the mid‐nineteenth century emphasized the increasing disjuncture between external, objective notions of time and the way time was experienced subjectively. We argue that the current literature on time and post‐modernity is best understood in this context, where earlier disequilibriating effects brought about by modern technologies are exacerbated by new developments in transportation and communications technology. Here we discuss the particular effects on topics of interest to social scientists such as changes in notions of personal identity and the effacement of historical time. We conclude with a call for more empirically grounded work on questions concerning time in postmodernism. We lament the paucity of concrete data as well as the excess of useless polemics and recommend several researchers already conducting work in this field.  相似文献

Time for renewal
During hard economic times, college health professionals must urge their supervisors and administrators to help them maintain or find new funding so that they can attend regional and national conferences of the American College Health Association. In this viewpoint, a nurse from a small college shares the various sources of funding she discovered to enable her to attend regional and national conference of the American College Health Association that saved her from burnout and also motivated her to strive for changes through setting goals.  相似文献

Time for change
ABSTRACT

This introductory article sets out the core concerns of this special issue on time and temporality in relation to social movements. It examines three areas: historical times, events, and sequences. In each area, we examine the ways that time and temporality are (often implicitly) embedded in existing social movement scholarship. We then introduce some of the problems raised by our contributors, and the ways in which they utilise greater sensitivity to time and temporality in furthering our understanding of the dynamics of the mobilisation, functions and fortunes of social movements.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper introduces community practitioners to important concepts and issues related to time series analysis. The basic components of a time series-trend, cycle, seasonal variation, and stochastic-are described, together with the related issues of sampling rate, autocorrelation, length, and missing observations. Then, a community practice example demonstrates the use of a basic two-step analytical technique. An understanding of these concepts and techniques can encourage practitioners to conduct preliminary analyses of time series, and help them evaluate the need for additional, more complex procedures.  相似文献
