Estimation in logistic-normal models for correlated and overdispersed binomial data is complicated by the numerical evaluation of often intractable likelihood functions. Penalized quasilikelihood (PQL) estimators of fixed effects and variance components are known to be seriously biased for binary data. A simple correction procedure has been proposed to improve the performance of the PQL estimators. The proposed method is illustrated by analyzing infectious disease data. Its performance is compared, by means of simulations, with that of the Bayes approach using the Gibbs sampler.  相似文献

The penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) approach is the most common estimation procedure for the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). However, it has been noticed that the PQL tends to underestimate variance components as well as regression coefficients in the previous literature. In this article, we numerically show that the biases of variance component estimates by PQL are systematically related to the biases of regression coefficient estimates by PQL, and also show that the biases of variance component estimates by PQL increase as random effects become more heterogeneous.  相似文献

Network meta‐analysis can be implemented by using arm‐based or contrast‐based models. Here we focus on arm‐based models and fit them using generalized linear mixed model procedures. Full maximum likelihood (ML) estimation leads to biased trial‐by‐treatment interaction variance estimates for heterogeneity. Thus, our objective is to investigate alternative approaches to variance estimation that reduce bias compared with full ML. Specifically, we use penalized quasi‐likelihood/pseudo‐likelihood and hierarchical (h) likelihood approaches. In addition, we consider a novel model modification that yields estimators akin to the residual maximum likelihood estimator for linear mixed models. The proposed methods are compared by simulation, and 2 real datasets are used for illustration. Simulations show that penalized quasi‐likelihood/pseudo‐likelihood and h‐likelihood reduce bias and yield satisfactory coverage rates. Sum‐to‐zero restriction and baseline contrasts for random trial‐by‐treatment interaction effects, as well as a residual ML‐like adjustment, also reduce bias compared with an unconstrained model when ML is used, but coverage rates are not quite as good. Penalized quasi‐likelihood/pseudo‐likelihood and h‐likelihood are therefore recommended.  相似文献

New robust estimates for variance components are introduced. Two simple models are considered: the balanced one-way classification model with a random factor and the balanced mixed model with one random factor and one fixed factor. However, the method of estimation proposed can be extended to more complex models. The new method of estimation we propose is based on the relationship between the variance components and the coefficients of the least-mean-squared-error predictor between two observations of the same group. This relationship enables us to transform the problem of estimating the variance components into the problem of estimating the coefficients of a simple linear regression model. The variance-component estimators derived from the least-squares regression estimates are shown to coincide with the maximum-likelihood estimates. Robust estimates of the variance components can be obtained by replacing the least-squares estimates by robust regression estimates. In particular, a Monte Carlo study shows that for outlier-contaminated normal samples, the estimates of variance components derived from GM regression estimates and the derived test outperform other robust procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the selection of random effects within the framework of generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs). Based on a reparametrization of the covariance matrix of random effects in terms of modified Cholesky decomposition, we propose to add a shrinkage penalty term to the penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) function of the variance components for selecting effective random effects. The shrinkage penalty term is taken as a function of the variance of random effects, initiated by the fact that if the variance is zero then the corresponding variable is no longer random (with probability one). The proposed method takes the advantage of a convenient computation for the PQL estimation and appealing properties for certain shrinkage penalty functions such as LASSO and SCAD. We propose to use a backfitting algorithm to estimate the fixed effects and variance components in GLMMs, which also selects effective random effects simultaneously. Simulation studies show that the proposed approach performs quite well in selecting effective random effects in GLMMs. Real data analysis is made using the proposed approach, too.  相似文献

A two-step estimation approach is proposed for the fixed-effect parameters, random effects and their variance σ2 of a Poisson mixed model. In the first step, it is proposed to construct a small σ2-based approximate likelihood function of the data and utilize this function to estimate the fixed-effect parameters and σ2. In the second step, the random effects are estimated by minimizing their posterior mean squared error. Methods of Waclawiw and Liang (1993) based on so-called Stein-type estimating functions and of Breslow and Clayton (1993) based on penalized quasilikelihood are compared with the proposed likelihood method. The results of a simulation study on the performance of all three approaches are reported.  相似文献

The method of target estimation developed by Cabrera and Fernholz [(1999). Target estimation for bias and mean square error reduction. The Annals of Statistics, 27(3), 1080–1104.] to reduce bias and variance is applied to logistic regression models of several parameters. The expectation functions of the maximum likelihood estimators for the coefficients in the logistic regression models of one and two parameters are analyzed and simulations are given to show a reduction in both bias and variability after targeting the maximum likelihood estimators. In addition to bias and variance reduction, it is found that targeting can also correct the skewness of the original statistic. An example based on real data is given to show the advantage of using target estimators for obtaining better confidence intervals of the corresponding parameters. The notion of the target median is also presented with some applications to the logistic models.  相似文献

Generalized additive mixed models are proposed for overdispersed and correlated data, which arise frequently in studies involving clustered, hierarchical and spatial designs. This class of models allows flexible functional dependence of an outcome variable on covariates by using nonparametric regression, while accounting for correlation between observations by using random effects. We estimate nonparametric functions by using smoothing splines and jointly estimate smoothing parameters and variance components by using marginal quasi-likelihood. Because numerical integration is often required by maximizing the objective functions, double penalized quasi-likelihood is proposed to make approximate inference. Frequentist and Bayesian inferences are compared. A key feature of the method proposed is that it allows us to make systematic inference on all model components within a unified parametric mixed model framework and can be easily implemented by fitting a working generalized linear mixed model by using existing statistical software. A bias correction procedure is also proposed to improve the performance of double penalized quasi-likelihood for sparse data. We illustrate the method with an application to infectious disease data and we evaluate its performance through simulation.  相似文献

Liang and Zeger (1986) introduced a class of estimating equations that gives consistent estimates of regression parameters and of their asymptotic variances in the class of generalized linear models for cluster correlated data. When the independent variables or covariates in such models are subject to measurement errors, the parameter estimates obtained from these estimating equations are no longer consistent. To correct for the effect of measurement errors, an estimator with smaller asymptotic bias is constructed along the lines of Stefanski (1985), assuming that the measurement error variance is either known or estimable. The asymptotic distribution of the bias-corrected estimator and a consistent estimator of its asymptotic variance are also given. The special case of a binary logistic regression model is studied in detail. For this case, methods based on conditional scores and quasilikelihood are also extended to cluster correlated data. Results of a small simulation study on the performance of the proposed estimators and associated tests of hypotheses are reported.  相似文献

When a generalized linear mixed model with multiple (two or more) sources of random effects is considered, the inferences may vary depending on the nature of the random effects. In this paper, we consider a familial Poisson mixed model where each of the count responses of a family are influenced by two independent unobservable familial random effects with two distinct components of dispersion. A generalized quasilikelihood (GQL) approach is discussed for the estimation of the dispersion components as well as the regression effects of the model. A simulation study is conducted to examine the relative performance of the GQL approach as opposed to a simpler method of moments. Furthermore, the GQL estimation methodology is illustrated by using health care utilization data that follow a Poisson mixed model with one component of dispersion and by using simulated asthma data that follow a Poisson mixed model with two sources of random effects with two distinct components of dispersion.  相似文献

In this article, we develop a robust variable selection procedure jointly for fixed and random effects in linear mixed models for longitudinal data. We propose a penalized robust estimator for both the regression coefficients and the variance of random effects based on a re-parametrization of the linear mixed models. Under some regularity conditions, we show the oracle properties of the proposed robust variable selection method. Simulation study shows the robustness of the proposed method against outliers. In the end, the proposed methods is illustrated in the analysis of a real data set.  相似文献

Ratio estimators of effect are ordinarily obtained by exponentiating maximum-likelihood estimators (MLEs) of log-linear or logistic regression coefficients. These estimators can display marked positive finite-sample bias, however. We propose a simple correction that removes a substantial portion of the bias due to exponentiation. By combining this correction with bias correction on the log scale, we demonstrate that one achieves complete removal of second-order bias in odds ratio estimators in important special cases. We show how this approach extends to address bias in odds or risk ratio estimators in many common regression settings. We also propose a class of estimators that provide reduced mean bias and squared error, while allowing the investigator to control the risk of underestimating the true ratio parameter. We present simulation studies in which the proposed estimators are shown to exhibit considerable reduction in bias, variance, and mean squared error compared to MLEs. Bootstrapping provides further improvement, including narrower confidence intervals without sacrificing coverage.  相似文献

We explore a class of vector smoothers based on local polynomial regression for fitting nonparametric regression models which have a vector response. The asymptotic bias and variance for the class of estimators are derived for two different ways of representing the variance matrices within both a seemingly unrelated regression and a vector measurement error framework. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of the estimators is different in these four cases. In addition, the placement of the kernel weights in weighted least squares estimators is very important in the seeming unrelated regressions problem (to ensure that the estimator is asymptotically unbiased) but not in the vector measurement error model. It is shown that the component estimators are asymptotically uncorrelated in the seemingly unrelated regressions model but asymptotically correlated in the vector measurement error model. These new and interesting results extend our understanding of the problem of smoothing dependent data.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider inferences in a binary dynamic mixed model. The existing estimation approaches mainly estimate the regression effects and the dynamic dependence parameters either through the estimation of the random effects or by avoiding the random effects technically. Under the assumption that the random effects follow a Gaussian distribution, we propose a generalized quasilikelihood (GQL) approach for the estimation of the parameters of the dynamic mixed models. The proposed approach is computationally less cumbersome than the exact maximum likelihood (ML) approach. We also carry out the GQL estimation under two competitive, namely, probit and logit mixed models, and discuss both the asymptotic and small-sample behaviour of their estimators.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose a new efficient and robust penalized estimating procedure for varying-coefficient single-index models based on modal regression and basis function approximations. The proposed procedure simultaneously solves two types of problems: separation of varying and constant effects and selection of variables with non zero coefficients for both non parametric and index components using three smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalties. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, the new method possesses the consistency in variable selection and the separation of varying and constant coefficients. In addition, the estimators of varying coefficients possess the optimal convergence rate and the estimators of constant coefficients and index parameters have the oracle property. Finally, we investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed method through a simulation study and real data analysis.  相似文献

A simulation study of the binomial-logit model with correlated random effects is carried out based on the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) methodology. Simulated data with various numbers of regression parameters and different values of the variance component are considered. The performance of approximate maximum likelihood (ML) and residual maximum likelihood (REML) estimators is evaluated. For a range of true parameter values, we report the average biases of estimators, the standard error of the average bias and the standard error of estimates over the simulations. In general, in terms of bias, the two methods do not show significant differences in estimating regression parameters. The REML estimation method is slightly better in reducing the bias of variance component estimates.  相似文献

We consider a partially linear model with diverging number of groups of parameters in the parametric component. The variable selection and estimation of regression coefficients are achieved simultaneously by using the suitable penalty function for covariates in the parametric component. An MM-type algorithm for estimating parameters without inverting a high-dimensional matrix is proposed. The consistency and sparsity of penalized least-squares estimators of regression coefficients are discussed under the setting of some nonzero regression coefficients with very small values. It is found that the root pn/n-consistency and sparsity of the penalized least-squares estimators of regression coefficients cannot be given consideration simultaneously when the number of nonzero regression coefficients with very small values is unknown, where pn and n, respectively, denote the number of regression coefficients and sample size. The finite sample behaviors of penalized least-squares estimators of regression coefficients and the performance of the proposed algorithm are studied by simulation studies and a real data example.  相似文献

We derived two methods to estimate the logistic regression coefficients in a meta-analysis when only the 'aggregate' data (mean values) from each study are available. The estimators we proposed are the discriminant function estimator and the reverse Taylor series approximation. These two methods of estimation gave similar estimators using an example of individual data. However, when aggregate data were used, the discriminant function estimators were quite different from the other two estimators. A simulation study was then performed to evaluate the performance of these two estimators as well as the estimator obtained from the model that simply uses the aggregate data in a logistic regression model. The simulation study showed that all three estimators are biased. The bias increases as the variance of the covariate increases. The distribution type of the covariates also affects the bias. In general, the estimator from the logistic regression using the aggregate data has less bias and better coverage probabilities than the other two estimators. We concluded that analysts should be cautious in using aggregate data to estimate the parameters of the logistic regression model for the underlying individual data.  相似文献

In this paper, a new estimation procedure based on composite quantile regression and functional principal component analysis (PCA) method is proposed for the partially functional linear regression models (PFLRMs). The proposed estimation method can simultaneously estimate both the parametric regression coefficients and functional coefficient components without specification of the error distributions. The proposed estimation method is shown to be more efficient empirically for non-normal random error, especially for Cauchy error, and almost as efficient for normal random errors. Furthermore, based on the proposed estimation procedure, we use the penalized composite quantile regression method to study variable selection for parametric part in the PFLRMs. Under certain regularity conditions, consistency, asymptotic normality, and Oracle property of the resulting estimators are derived. Simulation studies and a real data analysis are conducted to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed methods.  相似文献
