This paper studies the effects of non-normality and autocorrelation on the performances of various individuals control charts for monitoring the process mean and/or variance. The traditional Shewhart X chart and moving range (MR) chart are investigated as well as several types of exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) charts and combinations of control charts involving these EWMA charts. It is shown that the combination of the X and MR charts will not detect small and moderate parameter shifts as fast as combinations involving the EWMA charts, and that the performana of the X and MR charts is very sensitive to the normality assumption. It is also shown that certain combinations of EWMA charts can be designed to be robust to non-normality and very effective at detecting small and moderate shifts in the process mean and/or variance. Although autocorrelation can have a significant effect on the in-control performances of these combinations of EWMA charts, their relative out-of-control performances under independence are generally maintained for low to moderate levels of autocorrelation.  相似文献

When a process consists of several identical streams that are not highly correlated, an alternative to using separate control charts for each stream is to use a group control chart. Rather than plotting sample means from each stream at any time point, one could plot only the largest and/or smallest sample mean from among all the streams. Using the theory of stochastic processes and majorization together with numerical methods, the properties of a test that signals if r consecutive extreme values come from the same stream are examined. Both one and two-sided cases are considered. Average run lengths (ARL's), the least favorable configuration of the stream (population) means, and sample sizes necessary to have specified in-control and out-of-control ARL's are obtained. To increase the sensitivity of Shewhart control charts in detecting small process shifts sensitizing rules based on runs and scans are often used in practice. Shewhart control charts supplemented with runs rules for detecting shifts in process variance have not received as much attention as their counterparts for detecting shifts in process mean. In this article, we examine the performance of simple runs rules schemes for monitoring increases and/or decreases in process variance based on the sample standard deviation. We introduce one-sided S charts that overcome the weakness of high false-alarm rates when runs rules are added to a Shewhart control chart. The average run length performance and design aspects of the charts are studied thoroughly. The performance of associated two-sided control schemes is investigated as well.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the behavior of the Shewhart residual chart and the modified Shewhart chart if the parameters of the underlying process are unknown and thus have to be estimated. We focus on the estimation of the variance. For AR models we also consider the estimation of the AR coefficients. The average run length (ARL) of the control chart with estimated parameters is compared with the ARL of the scheme for known parameters and with the ARL for independent variables. Additionally, we give recommendations on the choice of the estimators in the context of Shewhart control schemes.  相似文献

The Shewhart s chart has been widely used to monitor the standard deviation of a process. However, the main disadvantage of an s chart is its slowness to signal small increases in the variability. In this paper, ideas of adaptive control charts are extended to the Shewhart s chart for improving the efficiency in signalling increases in the standard deviation. A Markov chain model is applied to evaluate its performances and compares its performances with combined double sampling and variable sampling intervals s chart, variable parameters (VP) R chart, exponentially weighted moving average and Cusum charts. The statistical performances show that the VP s chart is more sensitive to increases in standard deviation.  相似文献

Control charts are the most important statistical process control tool for monitoring variations in a process. A number of articles are available in the literature for the X? control chart based on simple random sampling, ranked set sampling, median-ranked set sampling (MRSS), extreme-ranked set sampling, double-ranked set sampling, double median-ranked set sampling and median double-ranked set sampling. In this study, we highlight some limitations of the existing ranked set charting structures. Besides, we propose different runs rules-based control charting structures under a variety of sampling strategies. We evaluate the performance of the control charting structures using power curves as a performance criterion. We observe that the proposed merger of varying runs rules schemes with different sampling strategies improve significantly the detection ability of location control charting structures. More specifically, the MRSS performs the best under both single- and double-ranked set strategies with varying runs rules schemes. We also include a real-life example to explain the proposal and highlight its significance for practical data sets.  相似文献

Recently, three-level control chart has been developed for monitoring situations in which an appropriate quality measure uses three discrete levels to classify a product characteristic. In this paper, the variable parameters control charts for multinomial data are developed with a three-level classification scheme. We compare it with various adaptive charts to show that this modified scheme can improve the performance. In order to evaluate and compare the performance of this scheme, adjusted average time to signal is used as the performance measure. Results indicate that the proposed chart has improved performance and is relatively sensitive to small shifts.  相似文献

In this article, new two-sided control charts with runs rules, suitable for the monitoring of exponential data, are proposed and studied. The proposed schemes are suitable to identify changes (upward or downward) in the mean of an exponential distribution. Also, they have the desired in-control performance as well as unbiased performance. Guidelines for the most effective scheme in practice are provided, along with comparisons with other competitive schemes. Zero-inflated probability models are used to model count data that have an excessive number of zeros. Shewhart-type control charts have been proposed for the monitoring of zero-inflated processes. Usually their performance is evaluated under the assumption of known process parameters. However, in practice, their values are rarely known and they have to be estimated from an in-control historical Phase I sample. In the present paper, we investigate the performance of Shewhart-type control charts for zero-inflated processes with estimated parameters and propose practical guidelines for the statistical design of the examined charts, when the size of the preliminary sample is predetermined.  相似文献

In some situations, an appropriate quality measure uses three or more discrete levels to classify a product characteristic. For these situations, some control charts have been developed based on statistical criteria regardless of economic considerations. In this paper, we develop economic and economic statistical designs (ESD) for 3-level control charts. We apply the cost model proposed by Costa and Rahim.[Economic design of X charts with variable parameters: the Markov chain approach, J Appl Stat 28 (2001), 875–885] Furthermore, we assume that the length of time that the process remains in control is exponentially distributed which allows us to apply the Markov chain approach for developing the cost model. We apply a genetic algorithm to determine the optimal values of model parameters by minimizing the cost function. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed models and to compare the cost of the pure economic and ESD for three-level control charts. A sensitivity analysis is also conducted in this numerical example.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the effect of estimating the vector of means and the variance–covariance matrix on the performance of two of the most widely used multivariate cumulative sum (CUSUM) control charts, the MCUSUM chart proposed by Crosier [Multivariate generalizations of cumulative sum quality-control schemes, Technometrics 30 (1988), pp. 291–303] and the MC1 chart proposed by Pignatiello and Runger [Comparisons of multivariate CUSUM charts, J. Qual. Technol. 22 (1990), pp. 173–186]. Using simulation, we investigate and compare the in-control and out-of-control performances of the competing charts in terms of the average run length measure. The in-control and out-of-control performances of the competing charts deteriorate significantly if the estimated parameters are used with control limits intended for known parameters, especially when only a few Phase I samples are used to estimate the parameters. We recommend the use of the MC1 chart over that of the MCUSUM chart if the parameters are estimated from a small number of Phase I samples.  相似文献

In this paper the economic design of Cumulative Count of Conforming (CCC) control charts to maintain the current control of fraction nonconforming of a process is studied. CCC chart is an attribute chart for monitoring high quality processes by plotting the cumulative count of conforming items between two nonconforming ones on a suitable chart. A process model is proposed to obtain an appropriate loss function. An alogorithm to search for the optimal setting of the sampling and control parameters is derived. Numerical illustrations of the method and some properties of the optimal economic design are provided.  相似文献

In this paper various types of EWMA control charts are introduced for the simultaneous monitoring of the mean and the autocovariances. The target process is assumed to be a stationary process up to fourth-order or an ARMA process with heavy tailed innovations. The case of a Gaussian process is included in our results as well. The charts are compared within a simulation study. As a measure of the performance the average run length is taken. The target process is an ARMA (1,1) process with Student-t distributed innovations. The behavior of the charts is analyzed with respect to several out-of-control models. The best design parameters are determined for each chart. Our comparisons show that the multivariate EWMA chart applied to the residuals has the best overall performance.  相似文献

The paper establishes the analytical grounds of the uniform superiority of a variable sampling interval (VSI) Shewhart control chart over the conventional fixed sampling interval (FSI) control chart, with respect to the zero-time performance, for a wide class of process distributions. We provide a sufficient condition on the distribution of a control chart statistic, and propose a criterion to determine the control limits and the regions in the in-control area of the VSI chart, corresponding to the different sampling intervals used by it. The condition and the criterion together ensure the uniform zero-time superiority of the VSI chart over the matched FSI chart, in detecting a process shift of any magnitude. It is shown that normal, Student's t and Laplace distributions satisfy the sufficient condition. In addition, chi-square, F and beta distributions satisfy it, provided that these are not extremely skewed. Further, it is illustrated that the superiority of the VSI feature is not trivial and cannot be assured if the sufficient condition is not satisfied or the control limits and the regions are not determined according to the proposed criterion. An application of the result to confirm the superiority of the VSI feature is demonstrated for the control chart for individual observations used to monitor a milk-pouch filling process.  相似文献

This article analyses the performance of a one-sided cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart that is initialized using a random starting point following the natural or intrinsic probability distribution of the CUSUM statistic. By definition, this probability distribution remains stable as the chart is used. The probability that the chart starts at zero according to this intrinsic distribution is always smaller than one, which confers on the chart a fast initial response feature. The article provides a fast and accurate algorithm to compute the in-control and out-of-control average run lengths and run-length probability distributions for one-sided CUSUM charts initialized using this random intrinsic fast initial response (RIFIR) scheme. The algorithm also computes the intrinsic distribution of the CUSUM statistic and random samples extracted from this distribution. Most importantly, no matter how the chart was initialized, if no level shifts and no alarms have occurred before time τ?>?0, the distribution of the run length remaining after τ is provided by this algorithm very accurately, provided that τ is not too small.  相似文献

Average run lengths of the zone control chart are presented, The performance of this chart is compared with that of several Shewhart charts with and without runs rules, It is shown that the standard zone control chart has performance similar to some even simpler charts and a much higher false alarm rate than the Shewhart chart with all of the common runs rules.
