Social Work Intervention on a New Housing Estate

Summary Families moving into a new housing estate were the subject ofa controlled experiment. Half received social work assistance,half did not. The two groups showed little difference in levelsof health or satisfaction with their environment. The problemsidentified tended to be communal problems of the estate, relatedto its design and management.     

Bias in Social Work Intervention with Battered Women

A total of 149 social workers from 21 social service agencies responded to questions regarding a client after reading one of six possible case vignettes. The results indicate that social workers stereotype clients who have been battered. In addition, social workers are less likely to consider relocation as an option to protect the victim who is married to her attacker. Also, surprisingly, male-social workers focus on violence related concerns as targets for intervention more than do female social workers.     

Social Work Intervention in Community Service

Summary The recently introduced National Standards for Community Serviceschemes in Scotland recognize that certain offenders on CommunityService may experience personal difficulties that interferewith their ability to comply with the order of the court andrecommend that where necessary advice and help should be providedto assist completion. A study of twelve Scottish Community Serviceschemes revealed that in spite of their often being acceptedfor Community Service because of the absence of obvious instabilityin their lives, many offenders encountered personal difficultieswhile completing their orders and those who did had a higherincidence of absence from placement. The relatively few instancesof intervention by Community Service staff that were found weremainly of a practical nature. Two schemes were, however, identifiedas offering a more intensive social work service which may haveenabled certain offenders who would not otherwise have doneso to complete their Community Service Orders. The practicalimplications of increased intervention by Community Servicestaff are discussed as is the possibility that such an approachmight enable schemes to deal successfully with a higher proportionof offenders who would otherwise have received a custodial sentence.

Social Work with Failure-to-Thrive Children and their Families: Part II: Behavioural Social Work Intervention

Summary Part II of this study is concerned with a multicomponent behaviouralsocial work intervention with 17 failure-to-thrive childrenand their families. An investigation, described in Part I, showedthat the route to this worrying problem differed from familyto family. Patterns of contributory causes did emerge—thusdetermining the main thrust of the interventions. Many of thechild victims were difficult (not least in biological and psychologicaladaptability) from birth. Parents were disadvantaged in variousways. Feeding difficulties and parent-child relationships provedto be the major focus of the interventions. Behavioural Socialwork interventions directed toward the feeding performance andrelationships resulted in a high success rate; these improvementswere maintained over considerable periods of time (one yearor more). The results and temporal generalization in the caseof more general parent-child interactions, and child behaviourproblems, were more modest, but encouraging. The programme isdescribed fully and the results are given in detail.

浅析个案社会工作方法介入社区矫正

社区矫正是我国正在探索的一种刑罚执行制度,是让符合法定条件的罪犯在社区中执行刑罚。但目前这一制度往往过于强调社区矫正的刑罚性质,而容易忽视服刑人员继续社会化的需求。有必要将个案社会工作方法介入到社区矫正工作中。本文拟从个案工作方法、个案工作过程、个案工作与矫正体系建立,以及个案工作对于专业社区矫正工作者的培养四个层面具体分析个案社会工作介入社区矫正的功能,以验证个案社会工作介入的科学性,并进一步提出改进提升我国目前社区矫正工作模式和方法的可行性措施。

Summary Taking as its starting point the Barclay Committee's definitionof community in terms of local informal networks, this papersets out to cull some relevant material from the literatureof social networks and to use it to demonstrate the appropriatenessof orienting social work practice to the community. In suggestingan emphasis on supporting rather than supplanting existing informalcaring systems, it is made dear that, if motivated by parsimonysuch an approach risks irresponsibly increasing distress andsocial costs.

社会工作介入刑满释放人员社会融入问题研究

如何发挥社会工作在促进刑满释放人员社会融入中的作用,是加强和创新社会管理的重要内容。本研究以长沙市8名刑满释放人员为研究个案,运用定性研究方法,以社会工作系统理论为研究视角,探讨社会工作介入刑满释放人员的身份融入、职业融入、家庭融入、社会交往融入的服务模式。在此基础上,建议建立社会工作介入刑满释放人员社会融入的服务模式,以便有效地促进刑满释放人员的社会融入,为维护社会稳定和构建社会主义和谐社会添砖加瓦。
