In this article, we consider the problem of testing the mean vector in the multivariate normal distribution, where the dimension p is greater than the sample size N. We propose a new test TBlock and obtain its asymptotic distribution. We also compare the proposed test with other two tests. The simulation results suggest that the performance of the new test is comparable to the existing two tests, and under some circumstances it may have higher power. Therefore, the new statistic can be employed in practice as an alternative choice.  相似文献

Investigators and epidemiologists often use statistics based on the parameters of a multinomial distribution. Two main approaches have been developed to assess the inferences of these statistics. The first one uses asymptotic formulae which are valid for large sample sizes. The second one computes the exact distribution, which performs quite well for small samples. They present some limitations for sample sizes N neither large enough to satisfy the assumption of asymptotic normality nor small enough to allow us to generate the exact distribution. We analytically computed the 1/N corrections of the asymptotic distribution for any statistics based on a multinomial law. We applied these results to the kappa statistic in 2×2 and 3×3 tables. We also compared the coverage probability obtained with the asymptotic and the corrected distributions under various hypothetical configurations of sample size and theoretical proportions. With this method, the estimate of the mean and the variance were highly improved as well as the 2.5 and the 97.5 percentiles of the distribution, allowing us to go down to sample sizes around 20, for data sets not too asymmetrical. The order of the difference between the exact and the corrected values was 1/N2 for the mean and 1/N3 for the variance.  相似文献

In this article, we propose instrumental variables (IV) and generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators for panel data models with weakly exogenous variables. The model is allowed to include heterogeneous time trends besides the standard fixed effects (FE). The proposed IV and GMM estimators are obtained by applying a forward filter to the model and a backward filter to the instruments in order to remove FE, thereby called the double filter IV and GMM estimators. We derive the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators under fixed T and large N, and large T and large N asymptotics where N and T denote the dimensions of cross section and time series, respectively. It is shown that the proposed IV estimator has the same asymptotic distribution as the bias corrected FE estimator when both N and T are large. Monte Carlo simulation results reveal that the proposed estimator performs well in finite samples and outperforms the conventional IV/GMM estimators using instruments in levels in many cases.  相似文献

We propose the L1 distance between the distribution of a binned data sample and a probability distribution from which it is hypothetically drawn as a statistic for testing agreement between the data and a model. We study the distribution of this distance for N-element samples drawn from k bins of equal probability and derive asymptotic formulae for the mean and dispersion of L1 in the large-N limit. We argue that the L1 distance is asymptotically normally distributed, with the mean and dispersion being accurately reproduced by asymptotic formulae even for moderately large values of N and k.  相似文献

Let X 1,X 2,…,X N be successive independent random P-vectors drawn from some continuous diagonally symmetric distribution. The problem of detecting a shift in level of the sequence at an unknown time point M, ≦MN-1, is studied. Test statistics based on multivariate analogues of the rank statistics derived by BHATTACHARYYA and JOHNSON (1888) are proposed, and their asymptotic properties are investigated.  相似文献

This article deals with the estimation of the stress-strength parameter R = P(Y < X) when X and Y are independent Lindley random variables with different shape parameters. The uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator has explicit expression, however, its exact or asymptotic distribution is very difficult to obtain. The maximum likelihood estimator of the unknown parameter can also be obtained in explicit form. We obtain the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator and it can be used to construct confidence interval of R. Different parametric bootstrap confidence intervals are also proposed. Bayes estimator and the associated credible interval based on independent gamma priors on the unknown parameters are obtained using Monte Carlo methods. Different methods are compared using simulations and one data analysis has been performed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

We explicitly compute the sojourn time distribution of an arbitrary customer in an M/M/1 processor sharing (PS) queue with permanent customers. We notably exhibit the orthogonal structure associated with this queuing system and we show how sieved Pollaczek polynomials and their associated orthogonality measure can be used to obtain an explicit representation for the complementary cumulative distribution function of the sojourn time of a customer. This explicit formula subsequently allows us to compute the two first moments of this random variable and to study the asymptotic behavior of its distribution. The most salient result is that the decay rate depends on the load of the system and the number K of permanent customers. When the load is above a certain threshold depending on K, the decay rate is identical to that of a regular M/M/1 PS queue.  相似文献

The authors give the exact coefficient of 1/N in a saddlepoint approximation to the Wilcoxon‐Mann‐Whitney null‐distribution. This saddlepoint approximation is obtained from an Edgeworth approximation to the exponentially tilted distribution. Moreover, the rate of convergence of the relative error is uniformly of order O (1/N) in a large deviation interval as defined in Feller (1971). The proposed method for computing the coefficient of 1/N can be used to obtain the exact coefficients of 1/Ni, for any i. The exact formulas for the cumulant generating function and the cumulants, needed for these results, are those of van Dantzig (1947‐1950).  相似文献

The authors study the asymptotic behaviour of the likelihood ratio statistic for testing homogeneity in the finite mixture models of a general parametric distribution family. They prove that the limiting distribution of this statistic is the squared supremum of a truncated standard Gaussian process. The autocorrelation function of the Gaussian process is explicitly presented. A re‐sampling procedure is recommended to obtain the asymptotic p‐value. Three kernel functions, normal, binomial and Poisson, are used in a simulation study which illustrates the procedure.  相似文献

Process capability indices have been widely used to evaluate the process performance to the continuous improvement of quality and productivity. The distribution of the estimator of the process capability index C pmk is very complicated and the asymptotic distribution is proposed by Chen and Hsu [The asymptotic distribution of the processes capability index C pmk , Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 24(5) (1995), pp. 1279–1291]. However, we found a critical error for the asymptotic distribution when the population mean is not equal to the midpoint of the specification limits. In this paper, a correct version of the asymptotic distribution is given. An asymptotic confidence interval of C pmk by using the correct version of asymptotic distribution is proposed and the lower bound can be used to test if the process is capable. A simulation study of the coverage probability of the proposed confidence interval is shown to be satisfactory. The relation of six sigma technique and the index C pmk is also discussed in this paper. An asymptotic testing procedure to determine if a process is capable based on the index of C pmk is also given in this paper.  相似文献

The detection of (structural) breaks or the so called change point problem has drawn increasing attention from the theoretical, applied economic and financial fields. Much of the existing research concentrates on the detection of change points and asymptotic properties of their estimators in panels when N, the number of panels, as well as T, the number of observations in each panel are large. In this paper we pursue a different approach, i.e., we consider the asymptotic properties when N→∞ while keeping T fixed. This situation is typically related to large (firm-level) data containing financial information about an immense number of firms/stocks across a limited number of years/quarters/months. We propose a general approach for testing for break(s) in this setup. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of test statistics. We also propose a wild bootstrap procedure that could be used to generate the critical values of the test statistics. The theoretical approach is supplemented by numerous simulations and by an empirical illustration. We demonstrate that the testing procedure works well in the framework of the four factors CAPM model. In particular, we estimate the breaks in the monthly returns of US mutual funds during the period January 2006 to February 2010 which covers the subprime crises.  相似文献

The authors consider a finite population ρ = {(Yk, xk), k = 1,…,N} conforming to a linear superpopulation model with unknown heteroscedastic errors, the variances of which are values of a smooth enough function of the auxiliary variable X for their nonparametric estimation. They describe a method of the Chambers‐Dunstan type for estimation of the distribution of {Yk, k = 1,…, N} from a sample drawn from without replacement, and determine the asymptotic distribution of its estimation error. They also consider estimation of its mean squared error in particular cases, evaluating both the analytical estimator derived by “plugging‐in” the asymptotic variance, and a bootstrap approach that is also applicable to estimation of parameters other than mean squared error. These proposed methods are compared with some common competitors in simulation studies.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the estimation of a shift parameter δo, based on some nonnegative functional Hg1 of the pair (DδN(x), f?δN(x)), where DδN(x) = KN/b {F2,n(x)—F1,m (x + δ)}, +δN(x) = {mF1,m (x + δ) + nF2,n(x)}/N, where F1,m and F2,n are the empirical distribution functions of two independent random samples (N = m + n), and where K2N = mn/N. First an estimator δN, is defined as a value of δ minimizing a functional H of the type of H1. A second estimator δ1N is also defined which is a linearized version of the first. Finite and asymptotic properties of these estimators are considered. It is also shown that most well-known test statistics of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov type are particular cases of such functionals H1. The asymptotic distribution and the asymptotic efficiency of some estimators are given.  相似文献

When the shape parameter is a non-integer of the generalized exponential (GE) distribution, the analytical renewal function (RF) usually is not tractable. To overcome this, the approximation method has been used in this paper. In the proposed model, the n-fold convolution of the GE cumulative distribution function (CDF) is approximated by n-fold convolutions of gamma and normal CDFs. We obtain the GE RF by a series approximation model. The method is very simple in the computation. Numerical examples have shown that the approximate models are accurate and robust. When the parameters are unknown, we present the asymptotic confidence interval of the RF. The validity of the asymptotic confidence interval is checked via numerical experiments.  相似文献

Over forty years ago, Grenander derived the MLE of a monotone decreasing density f with known mode. Prakasa Rao obtained the asymptotic distribution of this estimator at a fixed point x where f' (x) < 0. Here, we obtain the asymptotic distribution of this estimator at a fixed point x when f is constant and nonzero in some open neighborhood of x. This limiting distribution is expressible as the convolution of a closed-form density and a rescaled standard normal density. Groeneboom (1983) derived the aforementioned closed-form density and we provide an alternative, more direct derivation.  相似文献

In the Bayesian analysis of a multiple-recapture census, different diffuse prior distributions can lead to markedly different inferences about the population size N. Through consideration of the Fisher information matrix it is shown that the number of captures in each sample typically provides little information about N. This suggests that if there is no prior information about capture probabilities, then knowledge of just the sample sizes and not the number of recaptures should leave the distribution of Nunchanged. A prior model that has this property is identified and the posterior distribution is examined. In particular, asymptotic estimates of the posterior mean and variance are derived. Differences between Bayesian and classical point and interval estimators are illustrated through examples.  相似文献

This paper deals with the estimation of R=P[X<Y] when X and Y come from two independent generalized logistic distributions with different parameters. The maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) and its asymptotic distribution are proposed. The asymptotic distribution is used to construct an asymptotic confidence interval of R. Assuming that the common scale parameter is known, the MLE, uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator, Bayes estimation and confidence interval of R are obtained. The MLE of R, asymptotic distribution of R in the general case, is also discussed. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the different proposed methods. Analysis of a real data set has also been presented for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Let S (p×p) have a Wishart distribution -with v degrees of freedom and non-centrality matrix θ= [θjK] (p×p). Define θ0= min {| θjk |}, let θ0→∞, and suppose that | θjK | = 0(θo). Then the limiting form of the standardized non-central distribution, as θ while n? remains fixed, is a multivariate Gaussian distribution. This result in turn is used to obtain known asymptotic properties of multivariate chi-square and Rayleigh distributions under somewhat weaker conditions.  相似文献

It has been modeled for several replacement policies in literatures that the whole life cycle or operating interval of an operating unit should be finite rather than infinite as is done with the traditional method. However, it is more natural to consider the case in which the finite life cycle is a fluctuated parameter that could be used to estimate replacement times, which will be taken up in this article. For this, we first formulate a general model in which the unit is replaced at random age U, random time Y for the first working number, random life cycle S, or at failure X, whichever occurs first. The following models included in the general model, such that replacement done at age T when variable U is a degenerate distribution, and replacement done at working numbers N summed by number N of variable Y, are optimized. We obtain the total expected cost until replacement and the expected replacement cost rate for each model. Optimal age T, working number N, and a pair of (T, N) are discussed analytically and computed numerically.  相似文献

We examine the behaviour of the sample autocorrelations of a seasonal time series for which the first difference of order s (s ≥ 1) is stationary. The asymptotic distribution of the autocorrelations r'(k) based on uncentered data and of the autocorrelations r(k) based on centered data are derived. In each case, the asymptotic distribution is characterized as a function of the lag k and the parameters of the process. A simulation study was conducted in order to investigate the rate of convergence of the finite sample distributions of r(k) and r'(k) to their asymptotic counterparts and to evaluate the effect of centering or not centering the data on the distribution of autocorrelations.  相似文献
