We discuss the detection of a connected shape in a noisy image. Two types of image are considered: in the first a degraded outline of the shape is visible, while in the second the data are a corrupted version of the shape itself. In the first type the shape is defined by a thin outline of pixels with records that are different from those at pixels inside and outside the shape, while in the second type the shape is defined by its edge and pixels inside and outside the shape have different records. Our motivation is the identification of cross-sectional head shapes in ultrasound images of human fetuses. We describe and discuss a new approach to detecting shapes in images of the first type that uses a specially designed filter function that iteratively identifies the outline pixels of the head. We then suggest a way based on the cascade algorithm introduced by Jubb and Jennison (1991) of improving and considerably increasing the speed of a method proposed by Storvik (1994) for detecting edges in images of the second type.  相似文献

We describe a range of powerful multiscale analysis methods. We also focus on the pivotal issue of measurement noise in the physical sciences. From multiscale analysis and noise modeling, we develop a comprehensive methodology for data analysis of 2D images, 1D signals (or spectra), and point pattern data. Noise modeling is based on the following: (i) multiscale transforms, including wavelet transforms; (ii) a data structure termed the multiresolution support; and (iii) multiple scale significance testing. The latter two aspects serve to characterize signal with respect to noise. The data analysis objectives we deal with include noise filtering and scale decomposition for visualization or feature detection.  相似文献

Measuring productivity change with Malmquist indices has become common practice, because they are easily computed using nonparametric programming techniques and can be readily decomposed into technical and efficiency change. However, this approach is nonstochastic and requires a constant returns to scale assumption to construct the reference technology. We propose estimating productivity change using a stochastic input distance frontier, imposing no restrictions on returns to scale. We derive the analogous decomposition of productivity change and develop a generalized method of moments strategy in which outputs or inputs may be endogenous. We compare two methods in an application to electric utilities.  相似文献

We consider the problem of statistical inference for functional and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A new approach is proposed which extends the adaptive weights smoothing procedure of Polzehl and Spokoiny that was originally designed for image denoising. We demonstrate how the adaptive weights smoothing method can be applied to time series of images, which typically occur in functional and dynamic MRI. It is shown how signal detection in functional MRI and the analysis of dynamic MRI can benefit from spatially adaptive smoothing. The performance of the procedure is illustrated by using real and simulated data.  相似文献

We study application of the Exponential Tilt Model (ETM) to compare survival distributions in two groups. The ETM assumes a parametric form for the density ratio of the two distributions. It accommodates a broad array of parametric models such as the log-normal and gamma models and can be sufficiently flexible to allow for crossing hazard and crossing survival functions. We develop a nonparametric likelihood approach to estimate ETM parameters in the presence of censoring and establish related asymptotic results. We compare the ETM to the Proportional Hazards Model (PHM) in simulation studies. When the proportional hazards assumption is not satisfied but the ETM assumption is, the ETM has better power for testing the hypothesis of no difference between the two groups. And, importantly, when the ETM relation is not satisfied but the PHM assumption is, the ETM can still have power reasonably close to that of the PHM. Application of the ETM is illustrated by a gastrointestinal tumor study.  相似文献

A wavelet method is proposed to detect jumps in a function which is observed with unit-root noise. We obtain critical values at any scale and prove the consistency of wavelet detection when the nonparametric function is smooth. It shows that the estimation of the number and locations of change points are consistent when there are change points in the nonparametric function. Simulation study supports our method.  相似文献

Estimating the parameters of multivariate mixed Poisson models is an important problem in image processing applications, especially for active imaging or astronomy. The classical maximum likelihood approach cannot be used for these models since the corresponding masses cannot be expressed in a simple closed form. This paper studies a maximum pairwise likelihood approach to estimate the parameters of multivariate mixed Poisson models when the mixing distribution is a multivariate Gamma distribution. The consistency and asymptotic normality of this estimator are derived. Simulations conducted on synthetic data illustrate these results and show that the proposed estimator outperforms classical estimators based on the method of moments. An application to change detection in low-flux images is also investigated.  相似文献

We consider the problem of binary-image restoration. The image being restored is not random, and we make no assumption about the nature of its contents. The estimate of the colour at each site is a fixed (the same for all sites) function of the data available in a neighbourhood of that site. Under this restriction, the estimate minimizing the overall mean squared error of prediction is the conditional expectation of the true colour given the observations in the neighbourhood of a site. The computation of this conditional expectation leads to the formal definition of the local characteristics of an image, namely, the frequency with which each pattern appears in the true unobserved image. When the “true” distribution of the patterns is unknown, it can be estimated from the records. The conditional expectation described above can then be evaluated using the estimated distribution of the patterns, and this procedure leads to a very natural estimate of the colour at each site. We propose two unbiased and consistent estimates for the distribution of patterns when the noise is a Gaussian white noise. Since the size of realistic images is very large, the estimated pattern distribution is usually close to the true one. This suggests that the estimated conditional expectation can be expected to be nearly optimal. An interesting feature of the proposed restoration methods is that they do not require prior knowledge of the local or global properties of the true underlying image. Several examples based on synthetic images show that the new methods perform fairly well for a variety of images with different degrees of colour continuity or textures.  相似文献

In astronomy multiple images are frequently obtained at the same position of the sky for follow-up coaddition as it helps one go deeper and look for fainter objects. With large scale panchromatic synoptic surveys becoming more common, image co-addition has become even more necessary as new observations start to get compared with coadded fiducial sky in real time. The standard coaddition techniques have included straight averages, variance weighted averages, medians etc. A more sophisticated nonlinear response chi-square method is also used when it is known that the data are background noise limited and the point spread function is homogenized in all channels. A more robust object detection technique capable of detecting faint sources, even those not seen at all epochs which will normally be smoothed out in traditional methods, is described. The analysis at each pixel level is based on a formula similar to Mahalanobis distance.  相似文献

Optical astronomers now normally collect digital images by means of CCD detectors, which are blurred by atmospheric motion and distorted by physical noise in the detection process. We examine Bayesian procedures to clean such images using explicit models from spatial statistics for the underlying structure, and compare these methods with those based on maximum entropy.  相似文献

An approach to the analysis of time-dependent ordinal quality score data from robust design experiments is developed and applied to an experiment from commercial horticultural research, using concepts of product robustness and longevity that are familiar to analysts in engineering research. A two-stage analysis is used to develop models describing the effects of a number of experimental treatments on the rate of post-sales product quality decline. The first stage uses a polynomial function on a transformed scale to approximate the quality decline for an individual experimental unit using derived coefficients and the second stage uses a joint mean and dispersion model to investigate the effects of the experimental treatments on these derived coefficients. The approach, developed specifically for an application in horticulture, is exemplified with data from a trial testing ornamental plants that are subjected to a range of treatments during production and home-life. The results of the analysis show how a number of control and noise factors affect the rate of post-production quality decline. Although the model is used to analyse quality data from a trial on ornamental plants, the approach developed is expected to be more generally applicable to a wide range of other complex production systems.  相似文献

In this article, we propose an outlier detection approach in a multiple regression model using the properties of a difference-based variance estimator. This type of a difference-based variance estimator was originally used to estimate error variance in a non parametric regression model without estimating a non parametric function. This article first employed a difference-based error variance estimator to study the outlier detection problem in a multiple regression model. Our approach uses the leave-one-out type method based on difference-based error variance. The existing outlier detection approaches using the leave-one-out approach are highly affected by other outliers, while ours is not because our approach does not use the regression coefficient estimator. We compared our approach with several existing methods using a simulation study, suggesting the outperformance of our approach. The advantages of our approach are demonstrated using a real data application. Our approach can be extended to the non parametric regression model for outlier detection.  相似文献

We propose a novel method to quantify the similarity between an impression (Q) from an unknown source and a test impression (K) from a known source. Using the property of geometrical congruence in the impressions, the degree of correspondence is quantified using ideas from graph theory and maximum clique (MC). The algorithm uses the x and y coordinates of the edges in the images as the data. We focus on local areas in Q and the corresponding regions in K and extract features for comparison. Using pairs of images with known origin, we train a random forest to classify pairs into mates and non-mates. We collected impressions from 60 pairs of shoes of the same brand and model, worn over six months. Using a different set of very similar shoes, we evaluated the performance of the algorithm in terms of the accuracy with which it correctly classified images into source classes. Using classification error rates and ROC curves, we compare the proposed method to other algorithms in the literature and show that for these data, our method shows good classification performance relative to other methods. We present a simplified form of a univariate identification approach for time series models based on the residual white noise autoregressive order determination criterion and linear estimation methods. We also show how the procedure can be used to identify the degree of differencing necessary to induce stationarity in data. The performance of this approach is also contrasted with Portmanteau tests for detection of white noise residuals and with Dickey-Fuller and Bayesian procedures for detection of unit roots. Simulated and economic data are used to demonstrate the capabilities of the modified approach.  相似文献

文章阐述了马尔可夫模型在绿洲土地利用变化预测研究中的应用,并选取位于柴达木盆地东端都兰县境内的香日德绿洲为研究区,分别利用1987年和1999年覆盖该研究区的TM和ETM遥感影像,在RS和GIS技术的支持下,运用马尔可夫预测模型预测了2011年和2023年该区土地利用的变化情况。研究发现:在1987~1999年间,研究区面积变化最大的是土地利用类型为荒漠草场和高寒干旱草场,未来24年间,面积变化幅度将有所减小,各个土地利用类型的面积变化将达到一个较为平稳的状态。  相似文献

Wavelets are a commonly used tool in science and technology. Often, their use involves applying a wavelet transform to the data, thresholding the coefficients and applying the inverse transform to obtain an estimate of the desired quantities. In this paper, we argue that it is often possible to gain more insight into the data by producing not just one, but many wavelet reconstructions using a range of threshold values and analysing the resulting object, which we term the Time–Threshold Map (TTM) of the input data. We discuss elementary properties of the TTM, in its “basic” and “derivative” versions, using both Haar and Unbalanced Haar wavelet families. We then show how the TTM can help in solving two statistical problems in the signal + noise model: breakpoint detection, and estimating the longest interval of approximate stationarity. We illustrate both applications with examples involving volatility of financial returns. We also briefly discuss other possible uses of the TTM.  相似文献

Dynamic programming (DP) is a fast, elegant method for solving many one-dimensional optimisation problems but, unfortunately, most problems in image analysis, such as restoration and warping, are two-dimensional. We consider three generalisations of DP. The first is iterated dynamic programming (IDP), where DP is used to recursively solve each of a sequence of one-dimensional problems in turn, to find a local optimum. A second algorithm is an empirical, stochastic optimiser, which is implemented by adding progressively less noise to IDP. The final approach replaces DP by a more computationally intensive Forward-Backward Gibbs Sampler, and uses a simulated annealing cooling schedule. Results are compared with existing pixel-by-pixel methods of iterated conditional modes (ICM) and simulated annealing in two applications: to restore a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image, and to warp a pulsed-field electrophoresis gel into alignment with a reference image. We find that IDP and its stochastic variant outperform the remaining algorithms.  相似文献

Data are increasingly being collected in the form of images, especially in fields using remote sensing and microscopy. Statisticians are becoming interested in developing techniques to handle the highly structured data of images. Statistical work in this area is surveyed, and two problems discussed in more detail. The first is a form of image segmentation, classifying the pixels of a satellite picture by land use. The second is the summarization of electron micrographs.  相似文献
