Samples of size n are drawn from a finite population on each of two occasions. On the first occasion a variate x is measured, and on the second a variate y. In estimating the population mean of y, the variance of the best linear unbiased combination of means for matched and unmatched samples is itself minimized, with respect to the sampling design on the second occasion, by a certain degree of matching. This optimal allocation depends on the population correlation coefficient, which previous authors have assumed known. We estimate the correlation from an initial matched sample, then an approximately optimal allocation is completed and an estimator formed which, under a bivariate normal superpopulation model, has model expected mean square error equal, apart from an error of order n-2, to the minimum enjoyed by any linear, unbiased estimator.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, we have considered the problem of estimation of population variance on current (second) occasion in two occasion successive (rotation) sampling. A class of estimators of population variance has been proposed and its asymptotic properties have been discussed. The proposed class of estimators is compared with the sample variance estimator when there is no matching from the previous occasion and the Singh et al. (2013) estimator. Optimum replacement policy is discussed. It has been shown that the suggested estimator is more efficient than the Singh et al. (2013) estimator and a usual unbiased estimator when there is no matching. An empirical study is carried out in support of the present study.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with properties (bias, standard deviation, mean square error and efficiency) of twenty six estimators of the intraclass correlation in the analysis of binary data. Our main interest is to study these properties when data are generated from different distributions. For data generation we considered three over-dispersed binomial distributions, namely, the beta-binomial distribution, the probit normal binomial distribution and a mixture of two binomial distributions. The findings regarding bias, standard deviation and mean squared error of all these estimators, are that (a) in general, the distributions of biases of most of the estimators are negatively skewed. The biases are smallest when data are generated from the beta-binomial distribution and largest when data are generated from the mixture distribution; (b) the standard deviations are smallest when data are generated from the beta-binomial distribution; and (c) the mean squared errors are smallest when data are generated from the beta-binomial distribution and largest when data are generated from the mixture distribution. Of the 26, nine estimators including the maximum likelihood estimator, an estimator based on the optimal quadratic estimating equations of Crowder (1987), and an analysis of variance type estimator is found to have least amount of bias, standard deviation and mean squared error. Also, the distributions of the bias, standard deviation and mean squared error for each of these estimators are, in general, more symmetric than those of the other estimators. Our findings regarding efficiency are that the estimator based on the optimal quadratic estimating equations has consistently high efficiency and least variability in the efficiency results. In the important range in which the intraclass correlation is small (≤0 5), on the average, this estimator shows best efficiency performance. The analysis of variance type estimator seems to do well for larger values of the intraclass correlation. In general, the estimator based on the optimal quadratic estimating equations seems to show best efficiency performance for data from the beta-binomial distribution and the probit normal binomial distribution, and the analysis of variance type estimator seems to do well for data from the mixture distribution.  相似文献

A technique is presented for estimating the size of a closed population from multiple recapture data when sampling is performed without replacement on the last trapping occasion. The estimator of the population size along with the variance estimator is derived from a log-linear model.  相似文献

A model involving autocorrelated random effects and sampling errors is proposed for small-area estimation, using both time-series and cross-sectional data. The sampling errors are assumed to have a known block-diagonal covariance matrix. This model is an extension of a well-known model, due to Fay and Herriot (1979), for cross-sectional data. A two-stage estimator of a small-area mean for the current period is obtained under the proposed model with known autocorrelation, by first deriving the best linear unbiased prediction estimator assuming known variance components, and then replacing them with their consistent estimators. Extending the approach of Prasad and Rao (1986, 1990) for the Fay-Herriot model, an estimator of mean squared error (MSE) of the two-stage estimator, correct to a second-order approximation for a small or moderate number of time points, T, and a large number of small areas, m, is obtained. The case of unknown autocorrelation is also considered. Limited simulation results on the efficiency of two-stage estimators and the accuracy of the proposed estimator of MSE are présentés.  相似文献

A two-phase sampling estimator of the ratio-type for estimating the mean of a finite population, has been considered where the value of ρCy/Cx can be guessed or estimated in advance. Here Cy and Cx denote respectively the coefficients of variation of the characteristic under study, y, and the auxiliary characteristic x and ρ denotes the coefficient of correlation between y and x. When the value of ρCy/Cx is guessed or estimated exactly, the estimator has a smaller large-sample variance compared with either an ordinary ratio estimator or an ordinary linear regression estimator in two-phase sampling in the case where the first-phase sample is drawn independently from the second-phase sample. If the sample at the second phase is a subsample of the first-phase sample, the estimator has variance equal to that of the linear regression estimator. The largest value of the difference between the assumed value and the actual value of ρCy/Cx has been obtained so as not to result in the variance of the estimator being larger than the variances of either an ordinary ratio estimator or an ordinary linear regression estimator.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present work is an attempt to make use of several auxiliary variables at both the occasions for improving the precision of estimates at the current occasion on two occasions of successive sampling. Chain-type ratio estimator has been proposed for estimating the population mean at current occasion in two occasions rotation (successive) sampling. Theoretical properties of the proposed estimator have been investigated. The proposed estimator has been compared with simple mean estimator when there is no matching and with the ratio estimator in successive sampling when information is available on one auxiliary variable on both the occasions. Optimum replacement strategy has also been discussed. Theoretical results have been justified through empirical investigation.  相似文献

Not having a variance estimator is a seriously weak point of a sampling design from a practical perspective. This paper provides unbiased variance estimators for several sampling designs based on inverse sampling, both with and without an adaptive component. It proposes a new design, which is called the general inverse sampling design, that avoids sampling an infeasibly large number of units. The paper provide estimators for this design as well as its adaptive modification. A simple artificial example is used to demonstrate the computations. The adaptive and non‐adaptive designs are compared using simulations based on real data sets. The results indicate that, for appropriate populations, the adaptive version can have a substantial variance reduction compared with the non‐adaptive version. Also, adaptive general inverse sampling with a limitation on the initial sample size has a greater variance reduction than without the limitation.  相似文献

Median Estimation Using Double Sampling   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This paper proposes a general class of estimators for estimating the median in double sampling. The position estimator, stratification estimator and regression type estimator attain the minimum variance of the general class of estimators. The optimum values of the first-phase and second-phase sample sizes are also obtained for the fixed cost and the fixed variance cases. An empirical study examines the performance of the double sampling strategies for median estimation. Finally, an extension of the methods of Chen & Qin (1993) and Kuk & Mak (1994) is considered for the double sampling strategy.  相似文献

In this article, an unbiased estimator for finite population variance is developed under linear systematic sampling with two random starts and an explicit expression for its variance is also obtained. The study is supported by two real life situations. A detailed numerical comparative study has been carried out to compare its average variance with the average variance of the conventional unbiased estimator for finite population variance under simple random sampling for a wide variety of populations. Results based on the study strongly favor the use of the developed estimator for such populations.  相似文献

For fixed size sampling designs with high entropy, it is well known that the variance of the Horvitz–Thompson estimator can be approximated by the Hájek formula. The interest of this asymptotic variance approximation is that it only involves the first order inclusion probabilities of the statistical units. We extend this variance formula when the variable under study is functional, and we prove, under general conditions on the regularity of the individual trajectories and the sampling design, that we can get a uniformly convergent estimator of the variance function of the Horvitz–Thompson estimator of the mean function. Rates of convergence to the true variance function are given for the rejective sampling. We deduce, under conditions on the entropy of the sampling design, that it is possible to build confidence bands whose coverage is asymptotically the desired one via simulation of Gaussian processes with variance function given by the Hájek formula. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed variance estimator is evaluated on samples of electricity consumption data measured every half an hour over a period of 1 week.  相似文献

A formula to compute the sampling variance of the relative efficiency of indirect to direct selection is developed for the case when the genetic and phenotypic components are estimated from the analyses of variance and covariance. This formula holds provided that the genetic and phenotypic variances and covariances are bounded away from zero. It is also assumed that the number of offspring per mating group, k , is constant. The effect of varying k values and the distribution of the ratio estimator of indirect to direct selection, û, are briefly discussed. An example from an expriment using Tribolium castaneum is also given.  相似文献

The estimation of the variance for the GREG (general regression) estimator by weighted residuals is widely accepted as a method which yields estimators with good conditional properties. Since the optimal (regression) estimator shares the properties of GREG estimators which are used in the construction of weighted variance estimators, we introduce the weighting procedure also for estimating the variance of the optimal estimator. This method of variance estimation was originally presented in a seemingly ad hoc manner, and we shall discuss it from a conditional point of view and also look at an alternative way of utilizing the weights. Examples that stress conditional behaviour of estimators are then given for elementary sampling designs such as simple random sampling, stratified simple random sampling and Poisson sampling, where for the latter design we have conducted a small simulation study.  相似文献

In rotation (successive) sampling, it is common practice to use the information collected on a previous occasion to improve the precision of the estimates at current occasion. The previous information may be in the form of an auxiliary character, the character under study itself, or both. In the present work, information on an auxiliary character, which is readily available on all the occasions, has been used along with the information on study character from the previous and current occasion. Consequently, chain type difference and regression estimators have been proposed for estimating the population mean at second (current) occasion in the two occasions rotation (successive) sampling. The proposed estimators have been compared with sample mean estimator when there is no matching and the optimum estimator, which is the combination of the means of the matched and unmatched portions of the sample at the second occasion. Optimum replacement policy is also discussed. Theoretical results have been justified through empirical interpretation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a general class of estimators for estimating the finite population variance in successive sampling on two occasions using multi-auxiliary variables has been proposed. The expression of variance has also been derived. Further, it has been shown that the proposed general class of estimators is more efficient than the usual variance estimator and the class of variance estimators proposed by Singh et al. (2011) when we used more than one auxiliary variable. In addition, we support this with the aid of numerical illustration.  相似文献

In this paper, an extension of Horvitz–Thompson estimator used in adaptive cluster sampling to continuous universe is developed. Main new results are presented in theorems. The primary notions of discrete population are transferred to continuous population. First and second order inclusion probabilities for networks are delivered. Horvitz–Thompson estimator for adaptive cluster sampling in continuous universe is constructed. The unbiasedness of the estimator is proven. Variance and unbiased variance estimator are delivered. Finally, the theory is illustrated with an example.  相似文献

Pearson (1909) introduced a special method for estimating the correlation coefficient between a two-level variate X and a c-level variate Y , where it is assumed that the regression of Y on X is linear. Pearson's estimator, called biserial correlation, is thus obtained from a sample of size n from a 2 × c table. On the other hand, Lancaster and Hamdan (1964) introduced the polychoric estimator of the correlation between two variates X and Y from a sample available in the form of an r×c contingency table. Later, Hamdan (1968) proved that Pearson's (1900) tetrachoric estimator is a special case of Lancaster and Hamdan polychoric estimator. The present paper applies the orthonor-mal technique which underlies Lancaster's partition of chi-squared (1949) to show that Pearson's biserial correlation is a special form of Lancaster and Hamdan's polychoric estimator.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with estimating the common hazard rate of two exponential distributions with unknown and ordered location parameters under a general class of bowl-shaped scale invariant loss functions. The inadmissibility of the best affine equivariant estimator is established by deriving an improved estimator. Another estimator is obtained which improves upon the best affine equivariant estimator. A class of improving estimators is derived using the integral expression of risk difference approach of Kubokawa [A unified approach to improving equivariant estimators. Ann Statist. 1994;22(1):290–299]. These results are applied to specific loss functions. It is further shown that these estimators can be derived for four important sampling schemes: (i) complete and i.i.d. sample, (ii) record values, (iii) type-II censoring, and (iv) progressive Type-II censoring. A simulation study is carried out for numerically comparing the risk performance of these proposed estimators.  相似文献

This paper investigates the predictive mean squared error performance of a modified double k-class estimator by incorporating the Stein variance estimator. Recent studies show that the performance of the Stein rule estimator can be improved by using the Stein variance estimator. However, as we demonstrate below, this conclusion does not hold in general for all members of the double k-class estimators. On the other hand, an estimator is found to have smaller predictive mean squared error than the Stein variance-Stein rule estimator, over quite large parts of the parameter space.  相似文献
