The panel variant of the KPSS tests developed by Hadri [Hadri, K., 2000, Testing for stationarity in heterogeneous panels. Econometrics Journal, 3, 148–161] for the null of stationarity suffers from size distortions in the presence of cross-section dependence. However, applying the bootstrap methodology, we find that these tests are approximately correctly sized.  相似文献

This paper investigates how standard residual based tests for cointegration—under structural change in the long run relationship—can be modified in order to reduce size distortions and improve power, by following the same ideas used in the unit root context. This is a natural strategy given that these tests are unit root statistics applied to estimated residuals from a cointegrating regression. In order to assess the finite sample performance of the alternative tests, a Monte Carlo experiment will be implemented to analyze size and power. Critical values for the tests constructed with GLS detrended data, proposed by Elliot et al. (Econometrica 64:813–836, 1996), are obtained by simulation.  相似文献

Summary: In this paper the seasonal unit root test of Hylleberg et al. (1990) is generalized to cover a heterogenous panel. The procedure follows the work of Im, Pesaran and Shin (2002) and is independently proposed by Otero et al. (2004). Test statistics are given and critical values are obtained by simulation. Moreover, the properties of the tests are analyzed for different deterministic and dynamic specifications. Evidence is presented that for a small time series dimension the power is low even for increasing cross section dimension. Therefore, it seems necessary to have a higher time series dimension than cross section dimension. The test is applied to unemployment data in industrialized countries. In some cases seasonal unit roots are detected. However, the null hypotheses of panel seasonal unit roots are rejected. The null hypothesis of a unit root at the zero frequency is not rejected, thereby supporting the presence of hysteresis effects. * The research of this paper was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. In this paper, we suggest a similar unit root test statistic for dynamic panel data with fixed effects. The test is based on the LM, or score, principle and is derived under the assumption that the time dimension of the panel is fixed, which is typical in many panel data studies. It is shown that the limiting distribution of the test statistic is standard normal. The similarity of the test with respect to both the initial conditions of the panel and the fixed effects is achieved by allowing for a trend in the model using a parameterisation that has the same interpretation under both the null and alternative hypotheses. This parameterisation can be expected to increase the power of the test statistic. Simulation evidence suggests that the proposed test has empirical size that is very close to the nominal level and considerably more power than other panel unit root tests that assume that the time dimension of the panel is large. As an application of the test, we re-examine the stationarity of real stock prices and dividends using disaggregated panel data over a relatively short period of time. Our results suggest that while real stock prices contain a unit root, real dividends are trend stationary.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a family of relativel simple nonparametrics tests for a unit root in a univariate time series. Almost all the tests proposed in the literature test the unit root hypothesis against the alternative that the time series involved is stationarity or trend stationary. In this paper we take the (trend) stationarity hypothesis as the null and the unit root hypothesis as the alternative. The order differnce with most of the tests proposed in the literature is that in all four cases the asymptotic null distribution is of a well-known type, namely standard Cauchy. In the first instance we propose four Cauchy tests of the stationarity hypothesis against the unit root hypothesis. Under H1 these four test statistics involved, divided by the sample size n, converge weakly to a non-central Cauchy distribution, to one, and to the product of two normal variates, respectively. Hence, the absolute values of these test statistics converge in probability to infinity 9at order n). The tests involved are therefore consistent against the unit root hypothesis. Moreover, the small sample performance of these test are compared by Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, we propose two additional Cauchy tests of the trend stationarity hypothesis against the alternative of a unit root with drift.  相似文献

We propose a new test as a complement of the existing tests. Monte Carlo experiments show that the proposed test possesses the following characteristics: (i) in the presence of unit root or a structural change in the mean, the proposed test is as powerful as the KPSS and other tests; (ii) in the presence of a changing variance, the traditional tests perform badly whereas the proposed test has high power comparing to the existing tests; (iii) the proposed test has the same size as traditional stationarity tests under the null hypothesis of stationarity. An application to daily observations of return on U.S. Dollar/Euro exchange rate reveals the existence of instability in the unconditional variance when the entire sample is considered, but stability is found in subsamples.  相似文献

Tests for unit roots in panel data have become very popular. Two attractive features of panel data unit root tests are the increased power compared to time-series tests, and the often well-behaved limiting distributions of the tests. In this paper we apply Monte Carlo simulations to investigate how well the normal approximation works for a heterogeneous panel data unit root test when there are only a few cross sections in the sample. We find that the normal approximation, which should be valid for large numbers of cross-sectional units, works well, at conventional significance levels, even when the number of cross sections is as small as two. This finding is valuable for the applied researcher since critical values will be easy to obtain and p-values will be readily available.  相似文献

Abstract

It is well known that prior application of GLS detrending, as advocated by Elliot et al. [Elliot, G., Rothenberg, T., Stock, J. (1996). Efficient tests for an autoregressive unit root. Econometrica 64:813–836], can produce a significant increase in power to reject the unit root null over that obtained from a conventional OLS-based Dickey and Fuller [Dickey, D., Fuller, W. (1979). Distribution of the estimators for autoregressive time series with a unit root. J. Am. Statist. Assoc. 74:427–431] testing equation. However, this paper employs Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate that this increase in power is not necessarily obtained when breaks occur in either level or trend. It is found that neither OLS nor GLS-based tests are robust to level or trend breaks, their size and power properties both deteriorating as the break size increases.  相似文献

基于三种退势方法较详细研究了方差比检验在非对称单位根检验中的适用性,并通过MC模拟揭示了其检验势性质。结果表明:在不含趋势项的TAR下,两机制TAR数据落在第一机制的比率是影响方差比检验势的重要因素,且比率越高检验势也越高;三机制TAR中落在中间机制的数据比率会影响检验势,随着比率增加检验势呈下降趋势,但程度不大。在含趋势的TAR下,由于趋势项在数据生成过程中具有支配作用,各种检验势会随着趋势设定的不同而不同。数据在不同机制之间的转换概率越高,则ROLS和RDM退势较OLS退势具有明显优势。  相似文献

One of the most well-known facts about unit root testing in time series is that the Dickey–Fuller (DF) test based on ordinary least squares (OLS) demeaned data suffers from low power, and that the use of generalized least squares (GLS) demeaning can lead to substantial power gains. Of course, this development has not gone unnoticed in the panel unit root literature. However, while the potential of using GLS demeaning is widely recognized, oddly enough, there are still no theoretical results available to facilitate a formal analysis of such demeaning in the panel data context. The present article can be seen as a reaction to this. The purpose is to evaluate the effect of GLS demeaning when used in conjuncture with the pooled OLS t-test for a unit root, resulting in a panel analog of the time series DF–GLS test. A key finding is that the success of GLS depend critically on the order in which the dependent variable is demeaned and first-differenced. If the variable is demeaned prior to taking first-differences, power is maximized by using GLS demeaning, whereas if the differencing is done first, then OLS demeaning is preferred. Furthermore, even if the former demeaning approach is used, such that GLS is preferred, the asymptotic distribution of the resulting test is independent of the tuning parameters that characterize the local alternative under which the demeaning performed. Hence, the demeaning can just as well be performed under the unit root null hypothesis. In this sense, GLS demeaning under the local alternative is redundant.  相似文献

The paper provides a general framework for investigating the effects of permanent changes in the variance of the errors of an autoregressive process on unit root tests. Such a framework - which is based on a novel asymptotic theory for integrated and near integrated processes with heteroskedastic errors - allows to evaluate how the variance dynamics affect the size and the power function of unit root tests. Contrary to previous studies, it is shown that non-constant variances can both inflate and deflate the rejection frequency of the commonly used unit root tests, both under the null and under the alternative, with early negative and late positive variance changes having the strongest impact on size and power. It is also shown that shifts smoothed across the sample have smaller impacts than shifts occurring as a single abrupt jump, while periodic variances have a negligible effect even when a small number of cycles take place over a given sample. Finally, it is proved that the locally best invariant (LBI) test of a unit root against level stationarity is robust to heteroskedasticity of any form under the null hypothesis.  相似文献

We investigate the influence of residual serial correlation and of the time dimension on statistical inference for a unit root in dynamic longitudinal data, known as panel data in econometrics. To this end, we introduce two test statistics based on method of moments estimators. The first is based on the generalized method of moments estimators, while the second is based on the instrumental variables estimator. Analytical results for the Instrumental Variables (IV) based test in a simplified setting show that (i) large time dimension panel unit root tests will suffer from serious size distortions in finite samples, even for samples that would normally be considered large in practice, and (ii) negative serial correlation in the error terms of the panel reduces the power of the unit root tests, possibly up to a point where the test becomes biased. However, near the unit root the test is shown to have power against a wide range of alternatives. These findings are confirmed in a more general set-up through a series of Monte Carlo experiments.  相似文献

LSTAR模型的单位根检验往往易忽视其条件方差的时变性,实际上,对许多经济变量尤其是金融变量建立LSTAR模型后,经常发现其条件方差存在GARCH效应。针对LSTAR-GARCH模型的平稳性检验,本文构建了检验统计量tNG,之后在极大似然估计的基础上,推导出tNG的渐近分布,通过蒙特卡洛模拟方法得到该统计量的渐近临界值,并在此基础上研究了tNG检验的检验功效。在与刘雪燕和张晓峒(2009)提出的tNL检验、Ling等(2003)提出的tLG检验以及DF单位根检验进行比较后,发现tNG检验具备明显优势。  相似文献

In this article, we generalize four tests of multivariate linear hypothesis to panel data unit root testing. The test statistics are invariant to certain linear transformations of data and therefore simulated critical values may conveniently be used. It is demonstrated that all four tests remains well behaved in cases of where there are heterogeneous alternatives and cross-correlations between marginal variables. A Monte Carlo simulation is included to compare and contrast the tests with two well-established ones.  相似文献

In a very influential paper, Elliott et al. [Efficient tests for an autoregressive unit root. Econometrica. 1996;64:813–836] show that no uniformly most powerful test for the unit root testing problem exits, derive the relevant power envelope and characterize a family of point-optimal tests. As a by-product, they also propose a ‘generalized least squares (GLS) detrended’ version of the conventional Dickey–Fuller test, denoted DF-GLS, that has since then become very popular among practitioners, much more so than the point-optimal tests. In view of this, it is quite strange to find that, while conjectured in Elliott et al. [Efficient tests for an autoregressive unit root. Econometrica. 1996;64:813–836], so far there seems to be no formal proof of the asymptotic distribution of the DF-GLS test statistic. By providing three separate proofs, the current paper not only substantiates the required result, but also provides insight regarding the pros and cons of different methods of proof.  相似文献

The tests are flexible, intuitively appealing, and relatively easy to compute. We investigate the finite sample behavior in a simulation study. This article builds on the existing literature on (stationarity) tests of the null hypothesis of deterministic seasonality in a univariate time series process against the alternative of unit root behavior at some or all of the zero and seasonal frequencies. This article considers the case where, in testing for unit roots at some proper subset of the zero and seasonal frequencies, there are unattended unit roots among the remaining frequencies. Monte Carlo results are presented that demonstrate that in this case, the stationarity tests tend to distort below nominal size under the null and display an associated (often very large) loss of power under the alternative. A modification to the existing tests, based on data prefiltering, that eliminates the problem asymptotically is suggested. Monte Carlo evidence suggests that this procedure works well in practice, even at relatively small sample sizes. Applications of the robustified statistics to various seasonally unadjusted time series measures of U.K. consumers' expenditure are considered; these yield considerably more evidence of seasonal unit roots than do the existing stationarity tests.  相似文献
