DEAR READERS:
July 1st marks the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. It is a big event for mainlanders and Hongkongers alike. These days, the "Pearl of the East" is dynamic-as ever. Something is different though; Hongkongers feel more connected to the mainland, and they generally have a stronger sense of Chinese identity. Both Chinese and Western business experts predict a bright future—as an important financial hub—for the former British colony. Everybody at Women of China hopes Hongkongers have a happy celebration throughout July. We also wish them many successful decades to come.  相似文献

She not only shared a common fate with the Chinese people, but also recorded the Chinese revolution, construction and the years of reform with her pen and camera. Her experience and photographs have touched the cords of numerous overseas audiences. As the new century is coming, she has finally realized her life long wish and held an exhibition of her photographs at the China Art Gallery in Beijing.  相似文献

CHINA is a nation with many ethnic groups. Thus, there are many legends to explain the nation's many festivals. The largest and most striking of these festivals are the Spring Festival and Midautumn Festival. Anywhere Chinese people go, they will remember and celebrate these two festivals. The Mid-autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the 8th lunar month. In this festival, Chinese people eat moon cakes, a baked food, with a flour crust around a dense filling. Coming in a great variety of flavors and styles, the moon cake carries a great deal of symbolic significance. The moon cake is round like the moon. "Round" is pronounced "yuan" in Chinese. The Beijing neighborhood of Zhongguancun is considered China's Silicon Valley. After ten years of rapid devel-opment, it has hewn out a dominant position for itself in respect to computer markets, technology and labor force. Even on an average day, the famous "Computer Street" attracts a large number of visitors and consumers, but at a recent computer fair, the crowds were even larger. The purpose of the festival was to encourage computer use in homes and offices, to further promote the development of high-tech production and to keep pushing the modernization of information in China. The once-a-year computer festival will probably become a new custom in Chinese people's lives.  相似文献
