Optimal k-circulant supersaturated designs have been constructed in literature using computer intensive methods. A systematic method of construction for multi-level experiments based on balanced incomplete block designs is presented in this paper. The method is also applicable to two-level experiments. Illustrative examples are also given.  相似文献

Competition between neighbouring units in field experiments is a serious source of bias. The study of a competing situation needs construction of an environment in which it can happen and the competing units have to appear in a predetermined pattern. This paper describes methods of constructing incomplete block designs balanced for neighbouring competition effects. The designs obtained are totally balanced in the sense that all the effects, direct and neighbours, are estimated with the same variance. The efficiency of these designs has been computed as compared to a complete block design balanced for neighbours and a catalogue has also been prepared.  相似文献

The theory and properties of trend-free (TF) and nearly trend-free (NTF) block designs are wel1 developed. Applications have been hampered because a methodology for design construction has not been available.

This article begins with a short review of concepts and properties of TF and NTF block designs. The major contribution is provision of an algorithm for the construction of linear and nearly linear TF block designs. The algorithm is incorporated in a computer program in FORTRAN 77 provided in an appendix for the IBM PC or compatible microcomputer, a program adaptable also to other computers. Three sets of block designs generated by the program are given as examples.

A numerical example of analysis of a linear trend-free balanced incomplete block design is provided.  相似文献

Some methods for constructing balanced design for 3-factor symmetrical factorial experiments in which all the main effects are completely unconfounded by using balanced arrays and BIB designs are proposed. The method is flexible in terms of selecting block size.  相似文献

Criteria are proposed for assessing the robustness of a binary block design against the loss of whole blocks, based on summing entries of selected upper non‐principal sections of the concurrence matrix. These criteria improve on the minimal concurrence concept that has been used previously and provide new conditions for measuring the robustness status of a design. The robustness properties of two‐associate partially balanced designs are considered and it is shown that two categories of group divisible designs are maximally robust. These results expand a classic result in the literature, obtained by Ghosh, which established maximal robustness for the class of balanced block designs.  相似文献

Summary. The paper develops methods for the design of experiments for mechanistic models when the response must be transformed to achieve symmetry and constant variance. The power transformation that is used is partially justified by a rule in analytical chemistry. Because of the nature of the relationship between the response and the mechanistic model, it is necessary to transform both sides of the model. Expressions are given for the parameter sensitivities in the transformed model and examples are given of optimum designs, not only for single-response models, but also for experiments in which multivariate responses are measured and for experiments in which the model is defined by a set of differential equations which cannot be solved analytically. The extension to designs for checking models is discussed.  相似文献

The quality of estimation of variance components depends on the design used as well as on the unknown values of the variance components. In this article, three designs are compared, namely, the balanced, staggered, and inverted nested designs for the three-fold nested random model. The comparison is based on the so-called quantile dispersion graphs using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and maximum likelihood (ML) estimates of the variance components. It is demonstrated that the staggered nested design gives more stable estimates of the variance component for the highest nesting factor than the balanced design. The reverse, however, is true in case of lower nested factors. A comparison between ANOVA and ML estimation of the variance components is also made using each of the aforementioned designs.  相似文献

Equirephcate variance-balanced block designs possess many desirable properties and include several important subclasses of designs, such as balanced incomplete block designs. However, while attention has been paid to the derivation of properties and the construction of these designs, methods of analyzing experiments using these designs have not been developed completely. Thus, we consider models appropriate to these designs, construct test statistics for basic hypotheses and derive the distributions for these statistics. Four additive models that include all of the possible combinations of fixed and random effects are examined. The analyses are generalizations of the analyses for balanced incomplete block designs, and include the intra-block, intra-treatment and inter-block analyses, Estimators of fixed treatment effects and their distributions also are given.  相似文献

In computer experiments, space-filling designs with a sliced structure or nested structure have received much recent interest and been studied separately. However, it is likely that designs with both structures are needed in some situations, but there are no suitable designs so far. In this paper, we construct a special class of nested Latin hypercube designs with sliced structures, in such a design, a small sliced Latin hypercube design is nested within a large one. The construction method is easy to implement and the number of factors is flexible. Numerical simulations show the usefulness of the newly proposed designs.  相似文献

Balanced factorial designs are introduced for cDNA microarray experiments. Single replicate designs obtained using the classical method of confounding are shown to be particularly useful for deriving suitable balanced designs for cDNA microarrays. Classical factorial designs obtained using methods other than the method of confounding are also shown to be useful. The paper provides a systematic method of deriving designs for microarray experiments as opposed to algorithmic and ad-hoc methods and generalizes several of the microarray designs given recently in the literature.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of the design and analysis of experiments for comparing several treatments with a control when heterogeneity is to be eliminated in two directions. A class of row-column designs which are balanced for treatment vs. control comparisons (referred to as the balanced treatment vs. control row-column or BTCRC designs) is proposed. These designs are analogs of the so-called BTIB designs proposed by Bechhofer and Tamhane (Technometrics 23 (1981) 45–57) for eliminating heterogeneity in one direction. Some methods of analysis and construction of these designs are given. A measure of efficiency of BTCRC designs in terms of the A-optimality criterion is derived and illustrated by several examples.  相似文献

The purpose of screening experiments is to identify the dominant variables from a set of many potentially active variables which may affect some characteristic y. Edge designs were recently introduced in the literature and are constructed by using conferences matrices and were proved to be robust. We introduce a new class of edge designs which are constructed from skew-symmetric supplementary difference sets. These designs are particularly useful since they can be applied for experiments with an even number of factors and they may exist for orders where conference matrices do not exist. Using this methodology, examples of new edge designs for 6, 14, 22, 26, 38, 42, 46, 58, and 62 factors are constructed. Of special interest are the new edge designs for studying 22 and 58 factors because edge designs with these parameters have not been constructed in the literature since conference matrices of the corresponding order do not exist. The suggested new edge designs achieve the same model-robustness as the traditional edge designs. We also suggest the use of a mirror edge method as a test for the linearity of the true underlying model. We give the details of the methodology and provide some illustrating examples for this new approach. We also show that the new designs have good D-efficiencies when applied to first order models.  相似文献

If a crossover design with more than two treatments is carryover balanced, then the usual randomization of experimental units and periods would destroy the neighbour structure of the design. As an alternative, Bailey [1985. Restricted randomization for neighbour-balanced designs. Statist. Decisions Suppl. 2, 237–248] considered randomization of experimental units and of treatment labels, which leaves the neighbour structure intact. She has shown that, if there are no carryover effects, this randomization validates the row–column model, provided the starting design is a generalized Latin square. We extend this result to generalized Youden designs where either the number of experimental units is a multiple of the number of treatments or the number of periods is equal to the number of treatments. For the situation when there are carryover effects we show for so-called totally balanced designs that the variance of the estimates of treatment differences does not change in the presence of carryover effects, while the estimated variance of this estimate becomes conservative.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

For experiments running in field plots or over time, the observations are often correlated due to spatial or serial correlation, which leads to correlated errors in a linear model analyzing the treatment means. Without knowing the exact correlation matrix of the errors, it is not possible to compute the generalized least-squares estimator for the treatment means and use it to construct optimal designs for the experiments. In this paper, we propose to use neighborhoods to model the covariance matrix of the errors, and apply a modified generalized least-squares estimator to construct robust designs for experiments with blocks. A minimax design criterion is investigated, and a simulated annealing algorithm is developed to find robust designs. We have derived several theoretical results, and representative examples are presented.  相似文献

Many split-plot×split-block (SPSB) type experiments used in agriculture, biochemistry or plant protection are designed to study new crop plant cultivars or chemical agents. In these experiments it is usually very important to compare test treatments with the so-called control treatments. It happens yet that experimental material is limited and it does not allow using a complete (orthogonal) SPSB design. In the paper we propose a non-orthogonal SPSB design for consideration. Two cases of the design are presented here, i.e. when its incompleteness is connected with a crossed treatment structure only or with a nested treatment structure only. It is assumed the factors' levels connected with the incompleteness of the design are split into two groups: a set of test treatments and a set of control treatments. The method of constructions involves applying augmented block designs for some factors' levels. In a modelling data obtained from such experiments the structure of experimental material and appropriate randomization scheme of the different kinds of units before they enter the experiment are taken into account. With respect to the analysis of the obtained randomization model the approach typical to the multistratum experiments with orthogonal block structure is adapted. The proposed statistical analysis of linear model obtained includes estimation of parameters, testing general and particular hypotheses defined by the (basic) treatment contrasts with special reference to the notion of general balance.  相似文献

The efficient design of experiments for comparing a control with v new treatments when the data are dependent is investigated. We concentrate on generalized least-squares estimation for a known covariance structure. We consider block sizes k equal to 3 or 4 and approximate designs. This method may lead to exact optimal designs for some v, b, k, but usually will only indicate the structure of an efficient design for any particular v, b, k, and yield an efficiency bound, usually unattainable. The bound and the structure can then be used to investigate efficient finite designs.  相似文献

A polycross is the pollination by natural hybridization of a group of genotypes, generally selected, grown in isolation from other compatible genotypes in such a way to promote random open pollination. A particular practical application of the polycross method occurs in the production of a synthetic variety resulting from cross-pollinated plants. Laying out these experiments in appropriate designs, known as polycross designs, would not only save experimental resources but also gather more information from the experiment. Different situations may arise in polycross nurseries where accordingly different polycross designs may be used. For situations in which some genotypes interfere in the growth or production of other genotypes, but have to be grown together, neighbour-restricted design is a better option. Furthermore, when the topography of the nursery is such that a known wind system in a certain direction may prevail, then designs balanced for neighbour effects of genotypes only in the direction of wind are appropriate which may help in saving experimental resources to a great extent. Also, when genotypes are planted in a small area without leaving much space between rows, designs balanced for neighbour effects from all possible eight directions are useful to have equal chance of pollinating and being pollinated by every other genotype. Here, polycross designs have been obtained to match above-mentioned three situations. SAS Macros have also been developed to generate these proposed designs.  相似文献

The problem considered is to find optimum designs for treatment effects in a block design (BD) setup, when positional effects are also present besides treatment and block effects, but they are ignored while formulating the model. In the class of symmetric balanced incomplete block designs, the Youden square design is shown to be optimal in the sense of minimizing the bias term in the mean squared error (MSE) of the best linear unbiased estimators of the full set of orthonormal treatment contrasts, irrespective of the value of the positional effects.  相似文献

Variance dispersion graphs have become a popular tool in aiding the choice of a response surface design. Often differences in response from some particular point, such as the expected position of the optimum or standard operating conditions, are more important than the response itself. We describe two examples from food technology. In the first, an experiment was conducted to find the levels of three factors which optimized the yield of valuable products enzymatically synthesized from sugars and to discover how the yield changed as the levels of the factors were changed from the optimum. In the second example, an experiment was conducted on a mixing process for pastry dough to discover how three factors affected a number of properties of the pastry, with a view to using these factors to control the process. We introduce the difference variance dispersion graph (DVDG) to help in the choice of a design in these circumstances. The DVDG for blocked designs is developed and the examples are used to show how the DVDG can be used in practice. In both examples a design was chosen by using the DVDG, as well as other properties, and the experiments were conducted and produced results that were useful to the experimenters. In both cases the conclusions were drawn partly by comparing responses at different points on the response surface.  相似文献
