For a fixed integer \(b>1\), a set \(D\subseteq V\) is called a b-disjunctive dominating set of the graph \(G=(V,E)\) if for every vertex \(v\in V{\setminus }D\), v is either adjacent to a vertex of D or has at least b vertices in D at distance 2 from it. The Minimum b-Disjunctive Domination Problem (MbDDP) is to find a b-disjunctive dominating set of minimum cardinality. The cardinality of a minimum b-disjunctive dominating set of G is called the b-disjunctive domination number of G, and is denoted by \(\gamma _{b}^{d}(G)\). Given a positive integer k and a graph G, the b-Disjunctive Domination Decision Problem (bDDDP) is to decide whether G has a b-disjunctive dominating set of cardinality at most k. In this paper, we first show that for a proper interval graph G, \(\gamma _{b}^{d}(G)\) is equal to \(\gamma (G)\), the domination number of G for \(b \ge 3\) and observe that \(\gamma _{b}^{d}(G)\) need not be equal to \(\gamma (G)\) for \(b=2\). We then propose a polynomial time algorithm to compute a minimum cardinality b-disjunctive dominating set of a proper interval graph for \(b=2\). Next we tighten the NP-completeness of bDDDP by showing that it remains NP-complete even in chordal graphs. We also propose a \((\ln ({\varDelta }^{2}+(b-1){\varDelta }+b)+1)\)-approximation algorithm for MbDDP, where \({\varDelta }\) is the maximum degree of input graph \(G=(V,E)\) and prove that MbDDP cannot be approximated within \((1-\epsilon ) \ln (|V|)\) for any \(\epsilon >0\) unless NP \(\subseteq \) DTIME\((|V|^{O(\log \log |V|)})\). Finally, we show that MbDDP is APX-complete for bipartite graphs with maximum degree \(\max \{b,4\}\).  相似文献

An L(2,1)-labeling of a graph \(G\) is an assignment of nonnegative integers to \(V(G)\) such that the difference between labels of adjacent vertices is at least \(2\), and the difference between labels of vertices that are distance two apart is at least 1. The span of an L(2,1)-labeling of a graph \(G\) is the difference between the maximum and minimum integers used by it. The minimum span of an L(2,1)-labeling of \(G\) is denoted by \(\lambda (G)\). This paper focuses on L(2,1)-labelings-number of the edge-multiplicity-paths-replacement \(G(rP_{k})\) of a graph \(G\). In this paper, we obtain that \( r\Delta +1 \le \lambda (G(rP_{5}))\le r\Delta +2\), \(\lambda (G(rP_{k}))= r\Delta +1\) for \(k\ge 6\); and \(\lambda (G(rP_{4}))\le (\Delta +1)r+1\), \(\lambda (G(rP_{3}))\le (\Delta +1)r+\Delta \) for any graph \(G\) with maximum degree \(\Delta \). And the L(2,1)-labelings-numbers of the edge-multiplicity-paths-replacement \(G(rP_{k})\) are completely determined for \(1\le \Delta \le 2\). And we show that the class of graphs \(G(rP_{k})\) with \(k\ge 3 \) satisfies the conjecture: \(\lambda ^{T}_{2}(G)\le \Delta +2\) by Havet and Yu (Technical Report 4650, 2002).  相似文献

For graphs G and H, let \(G\rightarrow (H,H)\) signify that any red/blue edge coloring of G contains a monochromatic H as a subgraph. Denote \(\mathcal {H}(\Delta ,n)=\{H:|V(H)|=n,\Delta (H)\le \Delta \}\). For any \(\Delta \) and n, we say that G is partition universal for \(\mathcal {H}(\Delta ,n)\) if \(G\rightarrow (H,H)\) for every \(H\in \mathcal {H}(\Delta ,n)\). Let \(G_r(N,p)\) be the random spanning subgraph of the complete r-partite graph \(K_r(N)\) with N vertices in each part, in which each edge of \(K_r(N)\) appears with probability p independently and randomly. We prove that for fixed \(\Delta \ge 2\) there exist constants rB and C depending only on \(\Delta \) such that if \(N\ge Bn\) and \(p=C(\log N/N)^{1/\Delta }\), then asymptotically almost surely \(G_r(N,p)\) is partition universal for \(\mathcal {H}(\Delta ,n)\).  相似文献

Let \(G=(V, E)\) be a simple graph and denote the set of edges incident to a vertex v by E(v). The neighbor sum distinguishing (NSD) total choice number of G, denoted by \(\mathrm{ch}_{\Sigma }^{t}(G)\), is the smallest integer k such that, after assigning each \(z\in V\cup E\) a set L(z) of k real numbers, G has a total coloring \(\phi \) satisfying \(\phi (z)\in L(z)\) for each \(z\in V\cup E\) and \(\sum _{z\in E(u)\cup \{u\}}\phi (z)\ne \sum _{z\in E(v)\cup \{v\}}\phi (z)\) for each \(uv\in E\). In this paper, we propose some reducible configurations of NSD list total coloring for general graphs by applying the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. As an application, we present that \(\mathrm{ch}^{t}_{\Sigma }(G)\le \Delta (G)+3\) for every subcubic graph G.  相似文献

Let \(G = (V,E)\) be a finite graph and let \((\mathbb {A},+)\) be an abelian group with identity 0. Then G is \(\mathbb {A}\)-magic if and only if there exists a function \(\phi \) from E into \(\mathbb {A} - \{0\}\) such that for some \(c \in \mathbb {A}, \sum _{e \in E(v)} \phi (e) = c\) for every \(v \in V\), where E(v) is the set of edges incident to v. Additionally, G is zero-sum \(\mathbb {A}\)-magic if and only if \(\phi \) exists such that \(c = 0\). We consider zero-sum \(\mathbb {A}\)-magic labelings of graphs, with particular attention given to \(\mathbb {A} = \mathbb {Z}_{2j}^k\). For \(j \ge 1\), let \(\zeta _{2j}(G)\) be the smallest positive integer c such that G is zero-sum \(\mathbb {Z}_{2j}^c\)-magic if c exists; infinity otherwise. We establish upper bounds on \(\zeta _{2j}(G)\) when \(\zeta _{2j}(G)\) is finite, and show that \(\zeta _{2j}(G)\) is finite for all r-regular \(G, r \ge 2\). Appealing to classical results on the factors of cubic graphs, we prove that \(\zeta _4(G) \le 2\) for a cubic graph G, with equality if and only if G has no 1-factor. We discuss the problem of classifying cubic graphs according to the collection of finite abelian groups for which they are zero-sum group-magic.  相似文献

For \(S\subseteq G\), let \(\kappa (S)\) denote the maximum number r of edge-disjoint trees \(T_1, T_2, \ldots , T_r\) in G such that \(V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S\) for any \(i,j\in \{1,2,\ldots ,r\}\) and \(i\ne j\). For every \(2\le k\le n\), the k-connectivity of G, denoted by \(\kappa _k(G)\), is defined as \(\kappa _k(G)=\hbox {min}\{\kappa (S)| S\subseteq V(G)\ and\ |S|=k\}\). Clearly, \(\kappa _2(G)\) corresponds to the traditional connectivity of G. In this paper, we focus on the structure of minimally 2-connected graphs with \(\kappa _{3}=2\). Denote by \(\mathcal {H}\) the set of minimally 2-connected graphs with \(\kappa _{3}=2\). Let \(\mathcal {B}\subseteq \mathcal {H}\) and every graph in \(\mathcal {B}\) is either \(K_{2,3}\) or the graph obtained by subdividing each edge of a triangle-free 3-connected graph. We obtain that \(H\in \mathcal {H}\) if and only if \(H\in \mathcal {B}\) or H can be constructed from one or some graphs \(H_{1},\ldots ,H_{k}\) in \(\mathcal {B}\) (\(k\ge 1\)) by applying some operations recursively.  相似文献

We study the maximum coverage problem with group budget constraints (MCG). The input consists of a ground set X, a collection \(\psi \) of subsets of X each of which is associated with a combinatorial structure such that for every set \(S_j\in \psi \), a cost \(c(S_j)\) can be calculated based on the combinatorial structure associated with \(S_j\), a partition \(G_1,G_2,\ldots ,G_l\) of \(\psi \), and budgets \(B_1,B_2,\ldots ,B_l\), and B. A solution to the problem consists of a subset H of \(\psi \) such that \(\sum _{S_j\in H} c(S_j) \le B\) and for each \(i \in {1,2,\ldots ,l}\), \(\sum _{S_j \in H\cap G_i}c(S_j)\le B_i\). The objective is to maximize \(|\bigcup _{S_j\in H}S_j|\). In our work we use a new and improved analysis of the greedy algorithm to prove that it is a \((\frac{\alpha }{3+2\alpha })\)-approximation algorithm, where \(\alpha \) is the approximation ratio of a given oracle which takes as an input a subset \(X^{new}\subseteq X\) and a group \(G_i\) and returns a set \(S_j\in G_i\) which approximates the optimal solution for \(\max _{D\in G_i}\frac{|D\cap X^{new}|}{c(D)}\). This analysis that is shown here to be tight for the greedy algorithm, improves by a factor larger than 2 the analysis of the best known approximation algorithm for MCG.  相似文献

An r-acyclic edge coloring of a graph G is a proper edge coloring such that any cycle C has at least \(\min \{|C|,r\}\) colors. The least number of colors needed for an r-acyclic edge coloring of G is called the r-acyclic edge chromatic number or the r-acyclic chromatic index of G, denoted by \(A'_{r}\left( G\right) \). In this paper, we study the r-acyclic edge chromatic number with \(r\ge 4\) and prove that \(A'_{r}\left( G\right) \le 2\Delta ^{\lfloor \tfrac{r}{2}\rfloor }+O\left( \Delta ^{\tfrac{r+1}{3}}\right) \). We also prove that when r is even, \(A'_{r}\left( G\right) \le \Delta ^{\tfrac{r}{2}}+O\left( \Delta ^{\tfrac{r+1}{3}}\right) \), which is asymptotically optimal. In addition, we investigate how the r-acyclic edge chromatic number performs as the girth increases. It is proved in this paper that for every graph G with girth at least \(2r-1\), \(A'_r\left( G\right) \le \left( 9r-7\right) \Delta +10r-12\) holds. This paper studies the continuous connected 2-facility location problem (CC2FLP) in trees. Let \(T = (V, E, c, d, \ell , \mu )\) be an undirected rooted tree, where each node \(v \in V\) has a weight \(d(v) \ge 0\) denoting the demand amount of v as well as a weight \(\ell (v) \ge 0\) denoting the cost of opening a facility at v, and each edge \(e \in E\) has a weight \(c(e) \ge 0\) denoting the cost on e and is associated with a function \(\mu (e,t) \ge 0\) denoting the cost of opening a facility at a point x(et) on e where t is a continuous variable on e. Given a subset \(\mathcal {D} \subseteq V\) of clients, and a subset \(\mathcal {F} \subseteq \mathcal {P}(T)\) of continuum points admitting facilities where \(\mathcal {P}(T)\) is the set of all the points on edges of T, when two facilities are installed at a pair of continuum points \(x_1\) and \(x_2\) in \(\mathcal {F}\), the total cost involved in CC2FLP includes three parts: the cost of opening two facilities at \(x_1\) and \(x_2\), K times the cost of connecting \(x_1\) and \(x_2\), and the cost of all the clients in \(\mathcal {D}\) connecting to some facility. The objective is to open two facilities at a pair of continuum points in \(\mathcal {F}\) to minimize the total cost, for a given input parameter \(K \ge 1\). This paper focuses on the case of \(\mathcal {D} = V\) and \(\mathcal {F} = \mathcal {P}(T)\). We first study the discrete version of CC2FLP, named the discrete connected 2-facility location problem (DC2FLP), where two facilities are restricted to the nodes of T, and devise a quadratic time edge-splitting algorithm for DC2FLP. Furthermore, we prove that CC2FLP is almost equivalent to DC2FLP in trees, and develop a quadratic time exact algorithm based on the edge-splitting algorithm. Finally, we adapt our algorithms to the general case of \(\mathcal {D} \subseteq V\) and \(\mathcal {F} \subseteq \mathcal {P}(T)\).  相似文献

Consider a graph G. A subset of vertices, F, is called a vertex cover \(P_t\) (\(VCP_t\)) set if every path of order t contains at least one vertex in F. Finding a minimum \(VCP_t\) set in a graph is is NP-hard for any integer \(t\ge 2\) and is called the \(MVCP_3\) problem. In this paper, we study the parameterized algorithms for the \(MVCP_3\) problem when the underlying graph G is parameterized by the treewidth. Given an n-vertex graph together with its tree decomposition of width at most p, we present an algorithm running in time \(4^{p}\cdot n^{O(1)}\) for the \(MVCP_3\) problem. Moreover, we show that for the \(MVCP_3\) problem on planar graphs, there is a subexponential parameterized algorithm running in time \(2^{O(\sqrt{k})}\cdot n^{O(1)}\) where k is the size of the optimal solution.  相似文献

A (proper) total-k-coloring of a graph G is a mapping \(\phi : V (G) \cup E(G)\mapsto \{1, 2, \ldots , k\}\) such that any two adjacent or incident elements in \(V (G) \cup E(G)\) receive different colors. Let C(v) denote the set of the color of a vertex v and the colors of all incident edges of v. An adjacent vertex distinguishing total-k-coloring of G is a total-k-coloring of G such that for each edge \(uv\in E(G)\), \(C(u)\ne C(v)\). We denote the smallest value k in such a coloring of G by \(\chi ^{\prime \prime }_{a}(G)\). It is known that \(\chi _{a}^{\prime \prime }(G)\le \Delta (G)+3\) for any planar graph with \(\Delta (G)\ge 10\). In this paper, we consider the list version of this coloring and show that if G is a planar graph with \(\Delta (G)\ge 11\), then \({ ch}_{a}^{\prime \prime }(G)\le \Delta (G)+3\), where \({ ch}^{\prime \prime }_a(G)\) is the adjacent vertex distinguishing total choosability.  相似文献

Given a vertex-weighted undirected connected graph \(G = (V, E, \ell , \rho )\), where each edge \(e \in E\) has a length \(\ell (e) > 0\) and each vertex \(v \in V\) has a weight \(\rho (v) > 0\), a subset \(T \subseteq V\) of vertices and a set S containing all the points on edges in a subset \(E' \subseteq E\) of edges, the generalized absolute 1-center problem (GA1CP), an extension of the classic vertex-weighted absolute 1-center problem (A1CP), asks to find a point from S such that the longest weighted shortest path distance in G from it to T is minimized. This paper presents a simple FPTAS for GA1CP by traversing the edges in \(E'\) using a positive real number as step size. The FPTAS takes \(O( |E| |V| + |V|^2 \log \log |V| + \frac{1}{\epsilon } |E'| |T| {\mathcal {R}})\) time, where \({\mathcal {R}}\) is an input parameter size of the problem instance, for any given \(\epsilon > 0\). For instances with a small input parameter size \({\mathcal {R}}\), applying the FPTAS with \(\epsilon = \Theta (1)\) to the classic vertex-weighted A1CP can produce a \((1 + \Theta (1))\)-approximation in at most O(|E| |V|) time when the distance matrix is known and \(O(|E| |V| + |V|^2 \log \log |V|)\) time when the distance matrix is unknown, which are smaller than Kariv and Hakimi’s \(O(|E| |V| \log |V|)\)-time algorithm and \(O(|E| |V| \log |V| + |V|^3)\)-time algorithm, respectively.  相似文献

Let \(G=G(V,E)\) be a graph. A proper coloring of G is a function \(f:V\rightarrow N\) such that \(f(x)\ne f(y)\) for every edge \(xy\in E\). A proper coloring of a graph G such that for every \(k\ge 1\), the union of any k color classes induces a \((k-1)\)-degenerate subgraph is called a degenerate coloring; a proper coloring of a graph with no two-colored \(P_{4}\) is called a star coloring. If a coloring is both degenerate and star, then we call it a degenerate star coloring of graph. The corresponding chromatic number is denoted as \(\chi _{sd}(G)\). In this paper, we employ entropy compression method to obtain a new upper bound \(\chi _{sd}(G)\le \lceil \frac{19}{6}\Delta ^{\frac{3}{2}}+5\Delta \rceil \) for general graph G.  相似文献

An L(2, 1)-labeling for a graph \(G=(V,E)\) is a function f on V such that \(|f(u)-f(v)|\ge 2\) if u and v are adjacent and f(u) and f(v) are distinct if u and v are vertices of distance two. The L(2, 1)-labeling number, or the lambda number \(\lambda (G)\), for G is the minimum span over all L(2, 1)-labelings of G. When \(P_{m}\times C_{n}\) is the direct product of a path \(P_m\) and a cycle \(C_n\), Jha et al. (Discret Appl Math 145:317–325, 2005) computed the lambda number of \(P_{m}\times C_{n}\) for \(n\ge 3\) and \(m=4,5\). They also showed that when \(m\ge 6\) and \(n\ge 7\), \(\lambda (P_{m}\times C_{n})=6\) if and only if n is the multiple of 7 and conjectured that it is 7 if otherwise. They also showed that \(\lambda (C_{7i}\times C_{7j})=6\) for some ij. In this paper, we show that when \(m\ge 6\) and \(n\ge 3\), \(\lambda (P_m\times C_n)=7\) if and only if n is not a multiple of 7. Consequently the conjecture is proved. Here we also provide the conditions on m and n such that \(\lambda (C_m\times C_n)\le 7\).  相似文献

A partition of the vertex set V(G) of a graph G into \(V(G)=V_1\cup V_2\cup \cdots \cup V_k\) is called a k-strong subcoloring if \(d(x,y)\ne 2\) in G for every \(x,y\in V_i\), \(1\le i \le k\) where d(xy) denotes the length of a shortest x-y path in G. The strong subchromatic number is defined as \(\chi _{sc}(G)=\text {min}\{ k:G \text { admits a }k\)-\(\text {strong subcoloring}\}\). In this paper, we explore the complexity status of the StrongSubcoloring problem: for a given graph G and a positive integer k, StrongSubcoloring is to decide whether G admits a k-strong subcoloring. We prove that StrongSubcoloring is NP-complete for subcubic bipartite graphs and the problem is polynomial time solvable for trees. In addition, we prove the following dichotomy results: (i) for the class of \(K_{1,r}\)-free split graphs, StrongSubcoloring is in P when \(r\le 3\) and NP-complete when \(r>3\) and (ii) for the class of H-free graphs, StrongSubcoloring is polynomial time solvable only if H is an induced subgraph of \(P_4\); otherwise the problem is NP-complete. Next, we consider a lower bound on the strong subchromatic number. A strong set is a set S of vertices of a graph G such that for every \(x,y\in S\), \(d(x,y)= 2\) in G and the cardinality of a maximum strong set in G is denoted by \(\alpha _{s}(G)\). Clearly, \(\alpha _{s}(G)\le \chi _{sc}(G)\). We consider the complexity status of the StrongSet problem: given a graph G and a positive integer k, StrongSet asks whether G contains a strong set of cardinality k. We prove that StrongSet is NP-complete for (i) bipartite graphs and (ii) \(K_{1,4}\)-free split graphs, and it is polynomial time solvable for (i) trees and (ii) \(P_4\)-free graphs.  相似文献

Because of its application in the field of security in wireless sensor networks, k-path vertex cover (\(\hbox {VCP}_k\)) has received a lot of attention in recent years. Given a graph \(G=(V,E)\), a vertex set \(C\subseteq V\) is a k-path vertex cover (\(\hbox {VCP}_k\)) of G if every path on k vertices has at least one vertex in C, and C is a connected k-path vertex cover of G (\(\hbox {CVCP}_k\)) if furthermore the subgraph of G induced by C is connected. A homogeneous wireless sensor network can be modeled as a unit disk graph. This paper presents a new PTAS for \(\hbox {MinCVCP}_k\) on unit disk graphs. Compared with previous PTAS given by Liu et al., our method not only simplifies the algorithm and reduces the time-complexity, but also simplifies the analysis by a large amount.  相似文献

A tree T in an edge-colored graph is called a proper tree if no two adjacent edges of T receive the same color. Let G be a connected graph of order n and k be an integer with \(2\le k \le n\). For \(S\subseteq V(G)\) and \(|S| \ge 2\), an S-tree is a tree containing the vertices of S in G. A set \(\{T_1,T_2,\ldots ,T_\ell \}\) of S-trees is called internally disjoint if \(E(T_i)\cap E(T_j)=\emptyset \) and \(V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S\) for \(1\le i\ne j\le \ell \). For a set S of k vertices of G, the maximum number of internally disjoint S-trees in G is denoted by \(\kappa (S)\). The k-connectivity \(\kappa _k(G)\) of G is defined by \(\kappa _k(G)=\min \{\kappa (S)\mid S\) is a k-subset of \(V(G)\}\). For a connected graph G of order n and for two integers k and \(\ell \) with \(2\le k\le n\) and \(1\le \ell \le \kappa _k(G)\), the \((k,\ell )\)-proper index \(px_{k,\ell }(G)\) of G is the minimum number of colors that are required in an edge-coloring of G such that for every k-subset S of V(G), there exist \(\ell \) internally disjoint proper S-trees connecting them. In this paper, we show that for every pair of positive integers k and \(\ell \) with \(k \ge 3\) and \(\ell \le \kappa _k(K_{n,n})\), there exists a positive integer \(N_1=N_1(k,\ell )\) such that \(px_{k,\ell }(K_n) = 2\) for every integer \(n \ge N_1\), and there exists also a positive integer \(N_2=N_2(k,\ell )\) such that \(px_{k,\ell }(K_{m,n}) = 2\) for every integer \(n \ge N_2\) and \(m=O(n^r) (r \ge 1)\). In addition, we show that for every \(p \ge c\root k \of {\frac{\log _a n}{n}}\) (\(c \ge 5\)), \(px_{k,\ell }(G_{n,p})\le 2\) holds almost surely, where \(G_{n,p}\) is the Erd?s–Rényi random graph model.  相似文献

Let \(G=(V,\, E)\) be a given directed graph in which every edge e is associated with two nonnegative costs: a weight w(e) and a length l(e). For a pair of specified distinct vertices \(s,\, t\in V\), the k-(edge) disjoint constrained shortest path (kCSP) problem is to compute k (edge) disjoint paths between s and t, such that the total length of the paths is minimized and the weight is bounded by a given weight budget \(W\in \mathbb {R}_{0}^{+}\). The problem is known to be \({\mathcal {NP}}\)-hard, even when \(k=1\) (Garey and Johnson in Computers and intractability, 1979). Approximation algorithms with bifactor ratio \(\left( 1\,+\,\frac{1}{r},\, r\left( 1\,+\,\frac{2(\log r\,+\,1)}{r}\right) (1\,+\,\epsilon )\right) \) and \((1\,+\,\frac{1}{r},\,1\,+\,r)\) have been developed for \(k=2\) in Orda and Sprintson (IEEE INFOCOM, pp. 727–738, 2004) and Chao and Hong (IEICE Trans Inf Syst 90(2):465–472, 2007), respectively. For general k, an approximation algorithm with ratio \((1,\, O(\ln n))\) has been developed for a weaker version of kCSP, the k bi-constraint path problem which is to compute k disjoint st-paths satisfying a given length constraint and a weight constraint simultaneously (Guo et al. in COCOON, pp. 325–336, 2013). This paper first gives an approximation algorithm with bifactor ratio \((2,\,2)\) for kCSP using the LP-rounding technique. The algorithm is then improved by adopting a more sophisticated method to round edges. It is shown that for any solution output by the improved algorithm, there exists a real number \(0\le \alpha \le 2\) such that the weight and the length of the solution are bounded by \(\alpha \) times and \(2-\alpha \) times of that of an optimum solution, respectively. The key observation of the ratio proof is to show that the fractional edges, in a basic solution against the proposed linear relaxation of kCSP, exactly compose a graph in which the degree of every vertex is exactly two. At last, by a novel enhancement of the technique in Guo et al. (COCOON, pp. 325–336, 2013), the approximation ratio is further improved to \((1,\,\ln n)\).  相似文献

Let \(r\ge 3\) and \(k\ge 2\) be fixed integers, and let H be an r-uniform hypergraph with n vertices and m edges. In 1997, Bollobás and Scott conjectured that H has a vertex-partition into k sets with at most \(m/k^r+o(m)\) edges in each set. So far, this conjecture was confirmed when \(r=3\) or \(m=\Omega (n^{r-1+o(1)})\). In this paper, we show that it holds for \(m=\Omega (n^{r-3+\epsilon })\) for any \(\epsilon >0\).  相似文献
