We study the classical 0–1 knapsack problem with additional restrictions on pairs of items. A conflict constraint states that from a certain pair of items at most one item can be contained in a feasible solution. Reversing this condition, we obtain a forcing constraint stating that at least one of the two items must be included in the knapsack. A natural way for representing these constraints is the use of conflict (resp. forcing) graphs. By modifying a recent result of Lokstanov et al. (Proceedings of the 25th annual ACM-SIAM symposium on discrete algorithms, SODA, pp 570–581, 2014) we derive a fairly complicated FPTAS for the knapsack problem on weakly chordal conflict graphs. Next, we show that the techniques of modular decompositions and clique separators, widely used in the literature for solving the independent set problem on special graph classes, can be applied to the knapsack problem with conflict graphs. In particular, we can show that every positive approximation result for the atoms of prime graphs arising from such a decomposition carries over to the original graph. We point out a number of structural results from the literature which can be used to show the existence of an FPTAS for several graph classes characterized by the exclusion of certain induced subgraphs. Finally, a PTAS for the knapsack problem with H-minor free conflict graph is derived. This includes planar graphs and, more general, graphs of bounded genus. The PTAS is obtained by expanding a general result of Demaine et al. (Proceedings of 46th annual IEEE symposium on foundations of computer science, FOCS 2005, pp 637–646, 2005). The knapsack problem with forcing graphs can be transformed into a minimization knapsack problem with conflict graphs. It follows immediately that all our FPTAS results of the current and a previous paper carry over from conflict graphs to forcing graphs. The Steiner path problem is a common generalization of the Steiner tree and the Hamiltonian path problem, in which we have to decide if for a given graph there exists a path visiting a fixed set of terminals. In the Steiner cycle problem we look for a cycle visiting all terminals instead of a path. The Steiner path cover problem is an optimization variant of the Steiner path problem generalizing the path cover problem, in which one has to cover all terminals with a minimum number of paths. We study those problems for the special class of interval graphs. We present linear time algorithms for both the Steiner path cover problem and the Steiner cycle problem on interval graphs given as endpoint sorted lists. The main contribution is a lemma showing that backward steps to non-Steiner intervals are never necessary. Furthermore, we show how to integrate this modification to the deferred-query technique of Chang et al. to obtain the linear running times.

The Fibonacci index of a graph is the number of its stable sets. This parameter is widely studied and has applications in chemical graph theory. In this paper, we establish tight upper bounds for the Fibonacci index in terms of the stability number and the order of general graphs and connected graphs. Turán graphs frequently appear in extremal graph theory. We show that Turán graphs and a connected variant of them are also extremal for these particular problems. We also make a polyhedral study by establishing all the optimal linear inequalities for the stability number and the Fibonacci index, inside the classes of general and connected graphs of order n.  相似文献

The problem of finding the maximum number of vertex-disjoint uni-color paths in an edge-colored graph (called MaxCDP) has been recently introduced in literature, motivated by applications in social network analysis. In this paper we investigate how the complexity of the problem depends on graph parameters (namely the number of vertices to remove to make the graph a collection of disjoint paths and the size of the vertex cover of the graph), which makes sense since graphs in social networks are not random and have structure. The problem was known to be hard to approximate in polynomial time and not fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) for the natural parameter. Here, we show that it is still hard to approximate, even in FPT-time. Finally, we introduce a new variant of the problem, called MaxCDDP, whose goal is to find the maximum number of vertex-disjoint and color-disjoint uni-color paths. We extend some of the results of MaxCDP to this new variant, and we prove that unlike MaxCDP, MaxCDDP is already hard on graphs at distance two from disjoint paths.  相似文献

We consider traveling salesman problems (TSPs) with a permuted Monge matrix as cost matrix where the associated patching graph has a specially simple structure: a multistar, a multitree or a planar graph. In the case of multistars, we give a complete, concise and simplified presentation of Gaikov's theory. These results are then used for designing an O(m3 + mn) algorithm in the case of multitrees, where n is the number of cities and m is the number of subtours in an optimal assignment. Moreover we show that for planar patching graphs, the problem of finding an optimal subtour patching remains NP-complete.  相似文献

A complete graph is the graph in which every two vertices are adjacent. For a graph \(G=(V,E)\), the complete width of G is the minimum k such that there exist k independent sets \(\mathtt {N}_i\subseteq V\), \(1\le i\le k\), such that the graph \(G'\) obtained from G by adding some new edges between certain vertices inside the sets \(\mathtt {N}_i\), \(1\le i\le k\), is a complete graph. The complete width problem is to decide whether the complete width of a given graph is at most k or not. In this paper we study the complete width problem. We show that the complete width problem is NP-complete on \(3K_2\)-free bipartite graphs and polynomially solvable on \(2K_2\)-free bipartite graphs and on \((2K_2,C_4)\)-free graphs. As a by-product, we obtain the following new results: the edge clique cover problem is NP-complete on \(\overline{3K_2}\)-free co-bipartite graphs and polynomially solvable on \(C_4\)-free co-bipartite graphs and on \((2K_2, C_4)\)-free graphs. We also give a characterization for k-probe complete graphs which implies that the complete width problem admits a kernel of at most \(2^k\) vertices. This provides another proof for the known fact that the edge clique cover problem admits a kernel of at most \(2^k\) vertices. Finally we determine all graphs of small complete width \(k\le 3\).  相似文献

We study the maximum flow problem subject to binary disjunctive constraints in a directed graph: A negative disjunctive constraint states that a certain pair of arcs in a digraph cannot be simultaneously used for sending flow in a feasible solution. In contrast to this, positive disjunctive constraints force that for certain pairs of arcs at least one arc has to carry flow in a feasible solution. It is convenient to represent the negative disjunctive constraints in terms of a so-called conflict graph whose vertices correspond to the arcs of the underlying graph, and whose edges encode the constraints. Analogously we represent the positive disjunctive constraints by a so-called forcing graph. For conflict graphs we prove that the maximum flow problem is strongly $\mathcal{NP}$ -hard, even if the conflict graph consists only of unconnected edges. This result still holds if the network consists only of disjoint paths of length three. For forcing graphs we also provide a sharp line between polynomially solvable and strongly $\mathcal{NP}$ -hard instances for the case where the flow values are required to be integral. Moreover, our hardness results imply that no polynomial time approximation algorithm can exist for both problems. In contrast to this we show that the maximum flow problem with a forcing graph can be solved efficiently if fractional flow values are allowed.  相似文献

We study the computational complexity of the vertex 3-colorability problem in the class of claw-free graphs. Both the problem and the class received much attention in the literature, separately of each other. However, very little is known about the 3-colorability problem restricted to the class of claw-free graphs beyond the fact the problem is NP-complete under this restriction. In this paper we first strengthen this negative fact by revealing various further restrictions under which the problem remains NP-complete. Then we derive a number of positive results that deal with polynomially solvable cases of the problem in the class of claw-free graphs.  相似文献

A set D?V of a graph G=(V,E) is a dominating set of G if every vertex in V?D has at least one neighbor in D. A dominating set D of G is a paired-dominating set of G if the induced subgraph, G[D], has a perfect matching. Given a graph G=(V,E) and a positive integer k, the paired-domination problem is to decide whether G has a paired-dominating set of cardinality at most k. The paired-domination problem is known to be NP-complete for bipartite graphs. In this paper, we, first, strengthen this complexity result by showing that the paired-domination problem is NP-complete for perfect elimination bipartite graphs. We, then, propose a linear time algorithm to compute a minimum paired-dominating set of a chordal bipartite graph, a well studied subclass of bipartite graphs.  相似文献

Neighbourly set of a graph is a subset of edges which either share an end point or are joined by an edge of that graph. The maximum cardinality neighbourly set problem is known to be NP-complete for general graphs. Mahdian (Discret Appl Math 118:239–248, 2002) proved that it is in polynomial time for quadrilateral-free graphs and proposed an \(O(n^{11})\) algorithm for the same, here n is the number of vertices in the graph, (along with a note that by a straightforward but lengthy argument it can be proved to be solvable in \(O(n^5)\) running time). In this paper we propose an \(O(n^2)\) time algorithm for finding a maximum cardinality neighbourly set in a quadrilateral-free graph.  相似文献

This paper studies the following variations of arboricity of graphs. The vertex (respectively, tree) arboricity of a graph G is the minimum number va(G) (respectively, ta(G)) of subsets into which the vertices of G can be partitioned so that each subset induces a forest (respectively, tree). This paper studies the vertex and the tree arboricities on various classes of graphs for exact values, algorithms, bounds, hamiltonicity and NP-completeness. The graphs investigated in this paper include block-cactus graphs, series-parallel graphs, cographs and planar graphs.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of partitioning complete multipartite graphs with edges colored by 2 colors into the minimum number of vertex disjoint monochromatic cycles, paths and trees, respectively. For general graphs we simply address the decision version of these three problems the 2-PGMC, 2-PGMP and 2-PGMT problems, respectively. We show that both 2-PGMC and 2-PGMP problems are NP-complete for complete multipartite graphs and the 2-PGMT problem is NP-complete for bipartite graphs. This also implies that all these three problems are NP-complete for general graphs, which solves a question proposed by the authors in a previous paper. Nevertheless, we show that the 2-PGMT problem can be solved in polynomial time for complete multipartite graphs. Research supported by NSFC.  相似文献

Graph pebbling is a network model for studying whether or not a given supply of discrete pebbles can satisfy a given demand via pebbling moves. A pebbling move across an edge of a graph takes two pebbles from one endpoint and places one pebble at the other endpoint; the other pebble is lost in transit as a toll. It has been shown that deciding whether a supply can meet a demand on a graph is NP-complete. The pebbling number of a graph is the smallest t such that every supply of t pebbles can satisfy every demand of one pebble byt a vertex. Deciding if the pebbling number is at most k is \(\Pi _2^\mathsf{P}\)-complete. In this paper we develop a tool, called the Weight Function Lemma, for computing upper bounds and sometimes exact values for pebbling numbers with the assistance of linear optimization. With this tool we are able to calculate the pebbling numbers of much larger graphs than in previous algorithms, and much more quickly as well. We also obtain results for many families of graphs, in many cases by hand, with much simpler and remarkably shorter proofs than given in previously existing arguments (certificates typically of size at most the number of vertices times the maximum degree), especially for highly symmetric graphs. Here we apply the Weight Function Lemma to several specific graphs, including the Petersen, Lemke, \(4\mathrm{th}\) weak Bruhat, and Lemke squared, as well as to a number of infinite families of graphs, such as trees, cycles, graph powers of cycles, cubes, and some generalized Petersen and Coxeter graphs. In doing so we partly answer a question of Pachter, et al., by computing the pebbling exponent of cycles to within an asymptotically small range. It is conceivable that this method yields an approximation algorithm for graph pebbling.  相似文献

We study a new coloring concept which generalizes the classical vertex coloring problem in a graph by extending the notion of stable sets to split graphs. First of all, we propose the packing problem of finding the split graph of maximum size where a split graph is a graph G = (V,E) in which the vertex set V can be partitioned into a clique K and a stable set S. No condition is imposed on the edges linking vertices in S to the vertices in K. This maximum split graph problem gives rise to an associated partitioning problem that we call the split-coloring problem. Given a graph, the objective is to cover all his vertices by a least number of split graphs. Definitions related to this new problem are introduced. Let G be a connected graph and k be a positive integer. A vertex subset D of G is a k-hop connected dominating set if the subgraph of G induced by D is connected, and for every vertex v in G there is a vertex u in D such that the distance between v and u in G is at most k. We study the problem of finding a minimum k-hop connected dominating set of a graph (\({\textsc {Min}}k{\hbox {-}\textsc {CDS}}\)). We prove that \({\textsc {Min}}k{\hbox {-}\textsc {CDS}}\) is \(\mathscr {NP}\)-hard on planar bipartite graphs of maximum degree 4. We also prove that \({\textsc {Min}}k{\hbox {-}\textsc {CDS}}\) is \(\mathscr {APX}\)-complete on bipartite graphs of maximum degree 4. We present inapproximability thresholds for \({\textsc {Min}}k{\hbox {-}\textsc {CDS}}\) on bipartite and on (1, 2)-split graphs. Interestingly, one of these thresholds is a parameter of the input graph which is not a function of its number of vertices. We also discuss the complexity of computing this graph parameter. On the positive side, we show an approximation algorithm for \({\textsc {Min}}k{\hbox {-}\textsc {CDS}}\). Finally, when \(k=1\), we present two new approximation algorithms for the weighted version of the problem restricted to graphs with a polynomially bounded number of minimal separators.  相似文献

We study the problem of processing supergraph queries on graph databases. A graph database D is a large set of graphs. A supergraph query q on D is to retrieve all the graphs in D such that q is a supergraph of them. The large number of graphs in databases and the NP-completeness of subgraph isomorphism testing make it challenging to efficiently processing supergraph queries. In this paper, a new approach to processing supergraph queries is proposed. Specifically, a method for compactly organizing graph databases is first presented. Common subgraphs of the graphs in a database are stored only once in the compact organization of the database, in order to reduce the overall cost of subgraph isomorphism testings from the stored graphs to queries during query processing. Then, an exact algorithm and an approximate algorithm for generating the significant feature set with optimal order are proposed, followed by the algorithms for indices construction on graph databases. The optimal order on the feature set is to reduce the number of subgraph isomorphism testings during query processing. Based on the compact organization of graph databases, a novel algorithm for testing subgraph isomorphisms from multiple graphs to one graph is presented. Finally, based on all the above techniques, a query processing method is proposed. Analytical and experimental results show that the proposed algorithms outperform the existing similar algorithms by one to two orders of magnitude.  相似文献

The problem of colouring a k-colourable graph is well-known to be NP-complete, for k 3. The MAX-k-CUT approach to approximate k-colouring is to assign k colours to all of the vertices in polynomial time such that the fraction of `defect edges' (with endpoints of the same colour) is provably small. The best known approximation was obtained by Frieze and Jerrum (1997), using a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation which is related to the Lovász -function. In a related work, Karger et al. (1998) devised approximation algorithms for colouring k-colourable graphs exactly in polynomial time with as few colours as possible. They also used an SDP relaxation related to the -function.In this paper we further explore semidefinite programming relaxations where graph colouring is viewed as a satisfiability problem, as considered in De Klerk et al. (2000). We first show that the approximation to the chromatic number suggested in De Klerk et al. (2000) is bounded from above by the Lovász -function. The underlying semidefinite programming relaxation in De Klerk et al. (2000) involves a lifting of the approximation space, which in turn suggests a provably good MAX-k-CUT algorithm. We show that of our algorithm is closely related to that of Frieze and Jerrum; thus we can sharpen their approximation guarantees for MAX-k-CUT for small fixed values of k. For example, if k = 3 we can improve their bound from 0.832718 to 0.836008, and for k = 4 from 0.850301 to 0.857487. We also give a new asymptotic analysis of the Frieze-Jerrum rounding scheme, that provides a unifying proof of the main results of both Frieze and Jerrum (1997) and Karger et al. Given a graph, suppose that intruders hide on vertices or along edges of the graph. The fast searching problem is to find the minimum number of searchers required to capture all the intruders satisfying the constraint that every edge is traversed exactly once and searchers are not allowed to jump. In this paper, we prove lower bounds on the fast search number. We present a linear time algorithm to compute the fast search number of Halin graphs and their extensions. We present a quadratic time algorithm to compute the fast search number of cubic graphs.  相似文献

Given a graph G=(V,E) with node weight w:VR + and a subset SV, find a minimum total weight tree interconnecting all nodes in S. This is the node-weighted Steiner tree problem which will be studied in this paper. In general, this problem is NP-hard and cannot be approximated by a polynomial time algorithm with performance ratio aln n for any 0<a<1 unless NPDTIME(n O(log n)), where n is the number of nodes in s. In this paper, we are the first to show that even though for unit disk graphs, the problem is still NP-hard and it has a polynomial time constant approximation. We present a 2.5ρ-approximation where ρ is the best known performance ratio for polynomial time approximation of classical Steiner minimum tree problem in graphs. As a corollary, we obtain that there is a polynomial time (9.875+ε)-approximation algorithm for minimum weight connected dominating set in unit disk graphs, and also there is a polynomial time (4.875+ε)-approximation algorithm for minimum weight connected vertex cover in unit disk graphs.  相似文献

The maximum leaf spanning tree (MLST) is a good candidate for constructing a virtual backbone in self-organized multihop wireless networks, but is practically intractable (NP-complete). Self-stabilization is a general technique that permits to recover from catastrophic transient failures in self-organized networks without human intervention. We propose a fully distributed self-stabilizing approximation algorithm for the MLST problem in arbitrary topology networks. Our algorithm is the first self-stabilizing protocol that is specifically designed to approximate an MLST. It builds a solution whose number of leaves is at least 1/3 of the maximum possible in arbitrary graphs. The time complexity of our algorithm is O(n 2) rounds.  相似文献
