Women Battle Inequality

WTTH women parliamentarians worldwide gathering in Beijing on 15 September 1996, China's capital city was once again in the spotlight as women gathered to promote gender equality. One year after the Fourth World Conference on Women and the NGO Forum, and one day before the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held its 96th Conference, 150 women parliamentarians from more than 70 countries gathered in Beijing to attend the 96th Women

Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile （2006-2010）, on September 14, was named Under- Secretary-General for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women （UN Women） of the United Nations. UN Women, a newly created United Nations office to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women, was established on July 2 by the UN＇s General Assembly, which merged four gender entities into one. UN Women will promote the interests of women and girls across the globe. ＂Ms Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, highly honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN agencies and many partners, in both the public and private sector,＂ UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said when he announced the appointment. ＂     

Joint Exhibition of Women Painters from Beijing and Hong Kong

Hong Kong's return to China is another supreme symbol of peace and dignity. Celebrating this historical occasion, Beijing Women Painters' Association and Hong Kong Contemporary Women Painters' Association held a joint exhibition in Beijing, providing women painters from Hong Kong and the mainland an opportunity to learn from each other. Over more than a century time has brought great changes to the world. The Chinese women's profound love and pursuit of a unified culture for the Chinese nation makes their arts all the more splendid.

In the past 20 years Chinese society has changed from one with allocation of its socialeconomic resources being relatively equal to one with social economic differences. Thisdeveloped gradually, from a society composed of a relatively simple social structure to onethat now has more complex social stratums. Here, I will elaborate on the relationship betweensocial stratification and gender factors. The analysis is based on the data from the samplesurvey of two cities--Shenzhen in Guangdong Province and Hefei in Anhui Province.

The All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF） and UN Women held a two-day training on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women （CEDAW） in Beijing on August 21-22, 2014.
