Online meetings for 12‐Step and other support groups

The study showing that Alcoholics Anonymous as as effective, or more effective, than psychotherapy (see “Research: AA is better pathway to abstinence than psychotherapy,” ADAW March 16, https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/adaw.32655 ) was published a few days before COVID‐19 federal and state restrictions on group gatherings (“social distancing”) took effect, making AA and other meetings untenable. This seems like cruel timing. But John Kelly, Ph.D., one of the authors of the study, provided the below infographic to ADAW on other meetings. And Keith Humphreys, Ph.D., co‐author, was quoted recently on ABC News saying that he is concerned about patients with extreme mental health issues such as addiction, for whom face‐to‐face contact is key.

Briefly Noted

Last week, longtime methadone researcher and treatment professional Herman Joseph, Ph.D., died after a period of declining health. A stalwart patient advocate, he was ahead of his time, always focused on eliminating stigma early in his career, and on increasing access to treatment in the criminal justice system. He was vital to the development of the Rikers Island jail‐based program, KEEP, which provided methadone maintenance. We interviewed him in person and on the phone several times over the years, and were always impressed by his compassion and wisdom. The methadone field lost another great leader last year: Bob Newman, M.D. (see ADAW, Aug. 6, 2018, https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adaw.32060 ).     

Equality and Illusion: Gender and Tenure in Art History Careers

Using a national survey of 508 art history Ph.D.s including data on graduate school performance and careers 10 – 15 years post‐Ph.D., this study investigates gender, family, and academic tenure in art history, the humanities field with the highest proportion of women. Alternative hypotheses derived from three perspectives—termed here clockwork, two‐body, and synergy—are evaluated with multivariate logistic regression. Analysis finds that marriage increases men’s tenure odds and decreases women’s, but that some types of marriages do not decrease women’s odds, and some types dramatically increase men’s. This study calls attention to male advantage in female‐dominated academic disciplines and demonstrates the potential to better understand the interactions of gender, marriage, and careers by conceptualizing different types of marriages.     

The Impacts of State Surveillance on Political Assembly and Association: A Socio-Legal Analysis

Based on group interviews conducted in 2006 that included 71 social justice organizations, this paper analyzes the impact of surveillance on the exercise of assembly and association rights. We link these protected legal activities with analytic frameworks from social movements scholarship in order to further a socio-legal conception of political violence against social movements.

Family use of community services in economically stressed rural counties

This study focuses on stresses, coping strategies, and satisfactions of respondents in eight economically distressed rural counties in the state of Washington. An adult sample is divided into two groups: those who indicate specific economic problems and/or are unemployed (n=236) and those who are still employed and do not report specific economic stresses (n=190). Although those with specific economic problems show higher levels of perceived stress and financial dissatisfaction, there are no differences reported in over-all family satisfaction. Results point to the importance of providing specific employment-related community services to family members in these types of communities.Dorothy Z. Perceived risk associated with apparel purchasing in discount stores

Consumer discount store patronage preferences for apparel are investigated using the concept of perceived risk. Apparel items are assigned a type and level of risk: low social, low economic; high social, low economic; and high social, high economic. Females (N=222) responding to a mail survey rate their willingness to purchase each item in a discount store on a scale ofprefer to buy, may buy, ornever buy. Results suggest that consumer preference for purchasing in discount stores declines more sharply when economic risk increases than when social risk increases.Teresa A. ON THE SEARCH FOR TALENT IN ACADEMIC LABOR MARKETS: EASILY OBSERVABLE LATER‐GRADUATE STUDY OUTCOMES AS PREDICTORS OF EARLY‐CAREER PUBLISHING,PLACEMENT, AND TENURE

Three easily observed later‐graduate study outcomes, working with a prominent advisor, publishing while in graduate school, and coauthoring with the advisor are demonstrated to be significant determinants of early‐career publishing success for a sample of nearly 3,000 Ph.D. recipients from more than 100 domestic programs between 1990 and 1993. Out‐of‐sample predictions for 681 Ph.D. recipients from the class of 1994 indicate that these easily observed later‐graduate study signals dramatically improve our ability to forecast which students become prolific and which students fail to publish more than one article. Analyzing initial domestic tenure‐track economics placements indicates that hiring departments placed far more emphasis on Ph.D. program pedigree, leading to an initial tenure rate of less than 50% but eventually nearly three‐fourths currently hold tenured positions in the United States. Psychodynamic therapy for SUD: Counselor's view

First of all, psychodynamic psychotherapy as treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) works. Ian McLoone, lead therapist with the Alltyr Clinic in Minneapolis, knows that firsthand — he's in recovery from heroin addiction and is in it himself. And despite the fact that addiction therapists aren't taught psychodynamic theory or psychoanalytic psychotherapy in graduate school, where cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and, to a lesser degree, 12‐Step facilitation are stressed, he became interested in it mainly because of his employer, Mark Willenbring, M.D., a psychiatrist and former medical director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. We talked to McLoone for this story as a follow‐up to our article on the self‐medication hypothesis of addiction, for which we interviewed its developer, Ed Khantzian, M.D. (see “Psychodynamic psychotherapy: When it helps people in recovery,” ADAW, June 22, https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adaw.32756 ).
