OLD and shabby classrooms, broken windows and four or five students to a desk. Theresa Odishaw's heart sank when she saw the big hole an earthquake had left in the roof. The penetrating cold and dust of the Qinghai Plateau intruded into the classroom, stinging the thinly-clad students'skin. Theresa, president of Soong Ching Ling Foundation(SCLF)of Canada, and her colleague Marian Leung, vice president of the organization, were visiting Qiying Middle School at Guyuan County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Auntie Lan
TIANLIN 13 Village, where I live, sits in the southwest corner of Shanghai. It was built in the early 1980s. Whenever the people of the community have problems, they always turn to the woman in charge of the neighborhood committee for help. Most of the residents do not know her real name. They simply refer to her affectionately as their "Auntie Lan." I met Auntie Lan for the first time when I came to the neighborhood committee office to donate some clothes for the people of an area hit by an earthquake. The bright and tidy office, with its wall covered by all kinds of certificates of merit, impressed me deeply. Auntie Lan took the trouble to carefully count and record the donated money and clothes. Her neat penmanship on the notebooks was in harmony with the orderly office.  相似文献

Most of the 1.253 million Hani people live in mountainous areas between the Honghe and Lancang rivers in the south of Yunnan Province. The Hani language, with a Latin alphabet similar to the Yi language, was formulated in 1957. Both the Hani and Yi nationalities evolved from the ancient Qiang people. The tribe, called Heyi 300 B.C., is said to be the ancestors of the Hani. The tribe moved south to Mount Ailao and Mount Wuliang, the present home of the Hani. The social development of the Hani was unbalanced at the founding of New China in 1949. The area inhabited by the Hani nationality belonged to the feudal society, with some areas still at the end of the primitive society. The Hani people tend to live in the mountainous areas at between 1000- 2500 meters above sea level. The Hani, who have engaged in agriculture for generations, have mastered method for reclaiming the terraced fields, which was included in the "Agriculture Encyclopedia" by Xu Guangqi, a scientist in the Ming Dynasty. I. Introduction 1. The children of today will run the families of the 21st century. Bronze Elephant
A rare find among Shang Dynasty bronzes in China, this bronze elephant was unearthed in a hillside in Liling County, Hunan. It was probably buried by slave owners as a sacrifice to the mountains and lakes. The bronze elephant served as a wine vessel. Wine was poured into the large opening at the elephant's back, and was served through its trunk. It is 22.8 cm tall, 26.5 cm long and weighs 2.8 kg. The body of the vessel was carved with animal motifs. The front of the trunk, for example, is carved into the shape of a phoenix with a hooked beak. A tiger is crouched on the comb of the phoenix, and a snake curls out of its beak. The base of the trunk is decorated with another snake, with its head near the mouth of the elephant. The entire trunk is decorated with scales.  相似文献
