Gillian Mellsop, UNICEF＇s Representative to China, visited a children＇s center in Yichang （a city in Central China＇s Hubei Province） on August 28, 2014. During her visit, Mellsop learned about the center＇s development and the services with the technical support of a project jointly by UNICEF and the All-China Women＇s Federation. The project has helped families learn about early childhood development, children＇s care and parenting skills.

Invited by the All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF）, a six-member delegation of Indian women, headed by Mrs. Gomathi Nair, President of the All India Women＇s Conference, visited Beijing and Shanghai from July 25-31, 2010. It was the first time that the ACWF had invited a non- governmental women＇s delegation from India to visit. During the visit, Meng Xiaosi, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women＇s Federation, met members of the delegation. In Beijing, the delegation visited Wuzhou Women＇s Hospital and the grass-roots women＇s federation at Shijia Hutong, in Dongcheng District. In Shanghai, the delegation visited the Employment Promotion Center in Baoshan District. The guests also attended a work-experience- exchange meeting with Baoshan District Women＇s Federation, and they visited a pear orchard, the Shanghai Lilan Fashion Accessories Manufacturing Co., Ltd, and the Expo 2010 Shanghai China.

Educating Juvenile Offenders

Leaders of Zaozhuang （a city in East China＇s Shandong Province） Women＇s Federation visit orphans and disabled children in Zaozhuang Children＇s Welfare Office. The hospital of the 22nd Regiment of the Second Agricultural Division of the Xinjiang （in Northwest China） Production and Construction Corps, in Xinjiang＇s Hejing County, recently distributed, among doctors and nurses, a handbook to illustrate the importance of working in the frontier.

＂Jingle Ma＇s war epic is a touching portrait of love in the time of war. ＇Mulan＇ is anchored by a strong performance by Vicki Zhao Wei, the wide-eyed expressive star vividly portraying her character＇s sorrow, anguish, fear and terror. One can＇t say the same about her physicality though, judging from the number of cutaway shots in the film during the battle scenes. This too is not director Jingle Ma＇s forte, and audiences who have seen Red Cliff will likely be unimpressed.

The Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security of Shanghe County （in Ji＇nan, capital of East China＇s Shandong Province） in 2013 put a lot of effort into fulfilling the targets of women＇s development, as prescribed in China＇s 12th Five- Year （2011-2015） Plan. To promote women＇s development, the bureau did the following to help women find work and/or start a business：

Hong Kong director Peter Chan＇s latest film, Dearest, which is based on true stories of child abduction in China, is definitely a tearjerker. Set in Shenzhen, in southern China＇s Guangdong Province, Dearest follows a divorced couple, Tian Wenjun （played by Huang Bo） and Lu Xiaojuan （played by Hao Lei）. Tian works at a small market stall while his ex-wife is married to a wealthy man. Pengpeng, Tian and Lu＇s son, is their only common concern. One day, Pengpeng plays with other children in the market. He is distracted by his mother＇s car, and he runs after her. Suddenly, he is taken away by a stranger, which leaves his parents feeling despair and desperation.     

长沙市启动“给妇女一个没有暴力的未来”项目

Beijing Yuanzhong Gender Development Center and Changsha （capital of central China＇s Hunan Province） Women＇s Federation launched a project, entitled “Give Women a Non-violent Future,” in Changsha on July 10. It is a sub-project of Joint Efforts to Distinguish and Prevent Domestic Violence （JEDPDV）, which was implemented by Changsha Women＇s Federation and Anti- Domestic Violence Network in 2013. The region has established, while it has been implementing JEDPDV, a work system, through which various organizations （including municipal judicial organs, the civil affairs bureau and women＇s federations） have cooperated with each other （to make a concerted effort to promote anti- domestic violence legislation work）.

Dear Women of China I was glad to see your March issue focus on International Women＇s Day. It＇s an important event and I hope it will last 100 years more. As a man who supports women＇s rights and the chance at equal opportunities for all, I think the first step toward a gender-equal society is caring about the hardships women face. It＇s sad when I sometimes see friends of mine know about these issues, but are more interested in checking out sports. I hope International Women＇s Day continues to remind us, and urge us, to care about the female half of the human population.
