Combating Floods

In summer and autumn of 1998, the river vatleys of the Changjiang, Songhua and Nenjiang rivers were stricken by exceptionally serious floods, As of the, 22nd of August, the flooded areas stretched over 52.4 million acres. More than 223 million people were affected by the flood. 4.97 million houses were ruined, economic losses totaled RMB 166 billion, and most tragically, 3,004 people lost their byes. It was one of the costliest disasters in Chinese history. Millions of People's Liberation Army soldiers and local people joined hands to battle the floodwaters. Thanks to their unified efforts and tenacious struggle, they successfully withstood the rising, water, resumed production and began to rebuild their homes.

My Life with the Naxi People

The Naxi nationality people, with a population of 278,009, are mainly distributed throughout the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County in Yunnan Province. A small number also live in Sichuan and Tibet. Naxi means "black people" in their native language. In the 7th century, the Naxi people created a pictograph language called Dongba and a syllabic language called Geba. The Dongba language, with more than 1,400 characters, is valued as the only well-preserved "living pictographs." The Naxi people have also kept a collectively created epic of the Creation of the World, and the earliest record of national dance, a book of Naxi Dongba dance choreography. Today the Naxi people, with their long cultural tradition, work assiduously, and their lifestyles and modes of production have developed and improved greatly.

Women's Cloth-Making Campaign in Shanxi(1)

THE cloth-making campaign was a great activity carried out to pull through and win the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan (1937-1945). In the northwest of Shanxi Province, with mountains and long winters, local industry and agriculture developed slowly. My Daughter's Homeland

Millions of urban educated youths were assigned to bordering regions, pastoral areas, as well as agricultural areas, during China's chaotic "cultural revolution" (1966-1976), to take part in Iocal production.
