Meet the Parents
During the past 10 years that I have lived in China, nay parents have visited me once. As my family hails from a rural village (in southern Finland), which is often -- accidentally -- left off of maps, it is stressful enough to make the weekly groteW shopping ride to the closest city, to say nothing of flying thousands of kilometers to a metropolis of millions to see their firstborn. One can only imagine how overwhelming a city like Beijing must be for someone whose highlight of the day is to pick up the mail -- my mother always gets a little too excited over the prospect of catching a glimpse of a neighbor on the way to the mailbox.  相似文献

THE problems of laid-off women have become a common concern in Shanghai. Laid-off women believe they should be able to find employment instead of returning to their kitchens. Women's organizations, which are called women's parents' home, are also helping laid-off women return to their jobs by every possible means. Chen Xiaoli was a worker at a knitting mill which employed several hundred workers in Shanghai. She is tall, healthy and open-minded. During the "cultural revolution," teaching work was stopped in  相似文献

Kejing, a town in Jiyuan, in Central China's Henan Province, is a mountainous area. Li Rui, a woman from the region, has dedicated her life to changing the once-barren mountain in Zaomiao, her home village (which is in the town's boundary), into an oasis. During the past three decades, she and Zhu Wen, her husband, have entered into contracts to plant trees on nearly 1,000 mu (164 acres) of barren mountain land. Their persevering efforts have paid off: they have established, on the once-barren mountain, a large tree farm, and they have opened it as a resort -- to tourists.  相似文献

Flowers of layered cloth, also called appliqued flowers, are one example of Shaanxi Province's folk handicrafts. Village women use assorted bits of cloth to piece together and layer the flowers on a red or green background, according to patterns of paper-cuts, to form a fancy, colorful and distinctly local style. Recently, women in Yanchuan have been using appliqued flowers in modern hangings—a new adaptation of this traditional folk handicraft.  相似文献

Fenghuang has not only attracted many artists to come paint its scenery, but has also nurtured masters like Huang Yongyu and younger artists such as Chen Yanhong. Chen Yanhong graduated in 1992 from the Fine Art Department of the Central Institute for Nationalities. Half  相似文献

Even though I used to swaddle my poor rag doll, Ida, in old kitchen cloths and rename her "Jesus" every Christmas. my family was never religious and manyChristmas traditions were - and remain - unfamiliar to me. l have never been to a service o11 Christmas Day, and we have never read about the birth of Jesus before Christmas dinner. In my family, Christmas has always been terribly commercialized, and celebrated for the sole purpose of keeping the children happy and out of each other's hair for a couple of "blessed" days.  相似文献

ETHNIC women have always been a concern of Women of China. The column, "Ethnic Women," has been developed to look at the lives, employment, education of ethnic women, and to introduce their local customs and practices to our readers. Since the establishment of New China in 1949, China's 55 ethnic groups have witnessed significant progress in political rights, social status, employment, education, marriage and family, maternity and child health care. However, ethnic regions situated in remote areas still lag behind developed regions in eastern China in terms of economic development, with 257 of China's 592 poverty-stricken counties inhabited by ethnic groups. Concerned with problems ethnic women face, the Editorial Department of Women of China recently organized a meeting of experts and scholars to discuss the present situation and future development for ethnic women.  相似文献

TENG Youlian, a Miao woman and the chief director of the Meteorological Bureau of Mayang County, Hunan, is one of the most reliable people in the area. The local people affectionately refer to Teng as "the woman who manages weather," because she and her meteorological bureau can forecast weather precisely, and predict rainstorms and floods in advance. Several times, they have been able to greatly reduce the losses for Mayang County caused by disastrous floods. Though only a junior high school graduate, and one who had never formally learned meteorology, Teng studied very hard to gain practical knowledge after she transferred to the meteorological bureau in 1969; gradually, she became familiar with the work. In 1981, she became a technician in weather forecasting, and was promoted to assistant engineer in 1988. She worked diligently and carefully; in 1989, she set a record  相似文献

I'm delighted to write a column in Women of China English Monthly. Here, 1'11 share interesting findings, key insightsand real stories from the work I've been doing with thousands of competent professional women in China -- and around Asia. Given that it's the start of the calendar year, I want to shave a powerful exercise -- on reflection, to set you up for success in the coming year, and beyond. To start, grab a journal, and answer the following questions: What do you think your colleagues would say about you? What have been your key successes during the past year? What are the best practices you used to achieve those successes'?  相似文献
