Xi Replies to Village Official＇s Letter Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China （CPC）, recently replied to Zhang Guangxiu, a college graduate-turned village official, who wrote a letter to Xi in January 2014. In July 2009, Zhang became an official in Lushang, a village in Yantai, in East China＇s Shandong Province. She has worked tirelessly to help villagers escape poverty, despite having been diagnosed with leukemia in September 2010.

The book is the fourth in Wang Anyi＇s non-fiction series. It includes 58 of her essays, each of which records Wang＇s memory and understanding of an individual. The book focuses on renowned celebrities, including writer Ba Jin, film director Chen Kaige, painter Chert Danqing and actor Ge You, and ordinary people, including a postman and a handicraft worker. Each has impressed Wang, lor one reason or another. Wang, a Chinese professor with Fudan University, is Vice- Chairwoman of the Chinese Writers＇ Association. She is the first Chinese woman to be nominated for the prestigious Man Booker International Prize （2011）.

COUPLES invited to participate in the '96 Beijing Golden Wedding Anniversary for the World's People's Tour stayed in the Shangri-La Hotel in western Beijing. The large contingent included Chen Dong and his wife Zhang Shujie. Shortly after arriving, one segment of a TV program featuring a Canadian woman recounting her experiences in China in the Chinese language aroused the attention of Zhang Shujie. That woman said she was born in Beijing at a time when her family lived at No.47 Waijiaobu Street. Zhang muttered to herself: "It's No.32 and not No.47." Zhang suddenly remembered     

Zhang Xu and Naxi Culture

Zhang Xu, who has travelled to the remote city of Lijiang in Yunnan Province a dozen times or more, has been adopted by the Naxi people. Her passionate interest in Naxi culture drives her efforts to introduce it to the world. The house of Zhang Xu's Naxi parents in Mingyintuli Village is surrounded by Jade Dragon Mountain.

On the farm, you can appreciate the various flowers and plants, and you can collect fruit -- all while you breathe in the fresh air. Zhang Tian, a former white-collared employee with a company in Beijing, established the farm in 2011.

Of all the interpersonal relationships a woman will have, the one with her best friend will be the most special friendship. The special friendship between two women who are best friends has oft been discussed and the center of attention in novels and films. In Chinese, a woman＇s closest friend is called guhni. Perhaps the writers and playwrights were inspired by their own or their friends＇ stories about guimi, and that prompted them to produce works that addressed the topic. Such works have reminded many people of their own friends. Guimi has become a popular term in recent years. If you search the term guimi on the lnternet, you will find countless entries, and you will notice that many websites and BBS （bulletin board system） include guimi in their names.     

Promoting Harmony within Families

The ACWF and the Chinese Women＇s Research Society （CWRS） held, in Beijing on October 30, a seminar on eradicating sexual harassment in universities. Tan Lin, Member of ACWF＇s Secretariat and Vice-President of CWRS, Gao Shawei, Director of ACWF＇s Legal Department, and Xu Tao, Director of the Teachers＇ Department of China＇s Ministry of Education, spoke during the event. More than 50 people -- including leaders and teachers from 22 universities （in various regions of China）, each of which has established a women and gender research and training base with ACWF and CWRS＇s help -- attended. During the seminar, many participants offeredsuggestions on how to curb and prevent sexual harassment.
