In this article a class of distribution-free tests for the hypothesis of no row (treatment) effect in a two-way layout design, with several observations per cell, is proposed. The tests are based on U-statistics, constructed by considering minima of all possible subsamples of same size from each cell. The proposed class of tests is compared with the parametric test, Mack and Skillings test and Yate's test for two-way layout, in terms of Pitman ARE sense. It is seen that for the case of equal number of observations per cell, the proposed tests have better efficiency for exponential and uniform error distributions.  相似文献

An adaptive test is proposed for the one-way layout. This test procedure uses the order statistics of the combined data to obtain estimates of percentiles, which are used to select an appropriate set of rank scores for the one-way test statistic. This test is designed to have reasonably high power over a range of distributions. The adaptive procedure proposed for a one-way layout is a generalization of an existing two-sample adaptive test procedure. In this Monte Carlo study, the power and significance level of the F-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the normal scores test, and the adaptive test were evaluated for the one-way layout. All tests maintained their significance level for data sets having at least 24 observations. The simulation results show that the adaptive test is more powerful than the other tests for skewed distributions if the total number of observations equals or exceeds 24. For data sets having at least 60 observations the adaptive test is also more powerful than the F-test for some symmetric distributions.  相似文献

We investigate here small sample properties of approximate F-tests about fixed effects parameters in nonlinear mixed models. For estimation of population fixed effects parameters as well as variance components, we apply the two-stage approach. This method is useful and popular when the number of observations per sampling unit is large enough. The approximate F-test is constructed based on large-sample approximation to the distribution of nonlinear least-squares estimates of subject-specific parameters. We recommend a modified test statistic that takes into consideration approximation to the large-sample Fisher information matrix (See [Volaufova J, Burton JH. Note on hypothesis testing in mixed models. Oral presentation at: LINSTAT 2012/21st IWMS; 2012; Bedlewo, Poland]). Our main focus is on comparing finite sample properties of broadly used approximate tests (Wald test and likelihood ratio test) and the modified F-test under the null hypothesis, especially accuracy of p-values (See [Volaufova J, LaMotte L. Comparison of approximate tests of fixed effects in linear repeated measures design models with covariates. Tatra Mountains. 2008;39:17–25]). For that purpose two extensive simulation studies are conducted based on pharmacokinetic models (See [Hartford A, Davidian M. Consequences of misspecifying assumptions in nonlinear mixed effects models. Comput Stat and Data Anal. 2000;34:139–164; Pinheiro J, Bates D. Approximations to the log-likelihood function in the non-linear mixed-effects model. J Comput Graph Stat. 1995;4(1):12–35]).  相似文献

In the last few years, two adaptive tests for paired data have been proposed. One test proposed by Freidlin et al. [On the use of the Shapiro–Wilk test in two-stage adaptive inference for paired data from moderate to very heavy tailed distributions, Biom. J. 45 (2003), pp. 887–900] is a two-stage procedure that uses a selection statistic to determine which of three rank scores to use in the computation of the test statistic. Another statistic, proposed by O'Gorman [Applied Adaptive Statistical Methods: Tests of Significance and Confidence Intervals, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Philadelphia, 2004], uses a weighted t-test with the weights determined by the data. These two methods, and an earlier rank-based adaptive test proposed by Randles and Hogg [Adaptive Distribution-free Tests, Commun. Stat. 2 (1973), pp. 337–356], are compared with the t-test and to Wilcoxon's signed-rank test. For sample sizes between 15 and 50, the results show that the adaptive test proposed by Freidlin et al. and the adaptive test proposed by O'Gorman have higher power than the other tests over a range of moderate to long-tailed symmetric distributions. The results also show that the test proposed by O'Gorman has greater power than the other tests for short-tailed distributions. For sample sizes greater than 50 and for small sample sizes the adaptive test proposed by O'Gorman has the highest power for most distributions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

For two-way layouts in a between-subjects analysis of variance design, the parametric F-test is compared with seven nonparametric methods: rank transform (RT), inverse normal transform (INT), aligned rank transform (ART), a combination of ART and INT, Puri & Sen's L statistic, Van der Waerden, and Akritas and Brunners ANOVA-type statistics (ATS). The type I error rates and the power are computed for 16 normal and nonnormal distributions, with and without homogeneity of variances, for balanced and unbalanced designs as well as for several models including the null and the full model. The aim of this study is to identify a method that is applicable without too much testing for all the attributes of the plot. The Van der Waerden test shows the overall best performance though there are some situations in which it is disappointing. The Puri & Sen's and the ATS tests show generally very low power. These two and the other methods cannot keep the type I error rate under control in too many situations. Especially in the case of lognormal distributions, the use of any of the rank-based procedures can be dangerous for cell sizes above 10. As already shown by many other authors, nonnormal distributions do not violate the parametric F-test, but unequal variances do, and heterogeneity of variances leads to an inflated error rate more or less also for the nonparametric methods. Finally, it should be noted that some procedures show rising error rates with increasing cell sizes, the ART, especially for discrete variables, and the RT, Puri & Sen, and the ATS in the cases of heteroscedasticity.  相似文献

New aligned-rank test procedures for the composite null hypothesis of no interaction effects (without placing restrictions on the two main effects) against appropriate composite general alternatives are developed for the standard two-way layout with a single observation per cell. Relative power performances of the two new aligned-rank procedures and existing tests due to Tukey (1949) and to de Kroon & van der Laan (1981) are examined via Monte Carlo simulation. Extensive power studies conducted on the 5 × 6 and 5 × 9 two-way layouts with one observation per cell show superior performance of the new procedures for a variety of interaction effects. Simulated critical values for the new procedures are provided in settings where the number of levels for each of the factors is between 3 and 9, inclusive.  相似文献

Without the exchangeability assumption, permutation tests for comparing two population means do not provide exact control of the probability of making a Type I error. Another drawback of permutation tests is that it cannot be used to test hypothesis about one population. In this paper, we propose a new type of permutation tests for testing the difference between two population means: the split sample permutation t-tests. We show that the split sample permutation t-tests do not require the exchangeability assumption, are asymptotically exact and can be easily extended to testing hypothesis about one population. Extensive simulations were carried out to evaluate the performance of two specific split sample permutation t-tests: the split in the middle permutation t-test and the split in the end permutation t-test. The simulation results show that the split in the middle permutation t-test has comparable performance to the permutation test if the population distributions are symmetric and satisfy the exchangeability assumption. Otherwise, the split in the end permutation t-test has significantly more accurate control of level of significance than the split in the middle permutation t-test and other existing permutation tests.  相似文献

In socioeconomic areas, functional observations may be collected with weights, called weighted functional data. In this paper, we deal with a general linear hypothesis testing (GLHT) problem in the framework of functional analysis of variance with weighted functional data. With weights taken into account, we obtain unbiased and consistent estimators of the group mean and covariance functions. For the GLHT problem, we obtain a pointwise F-test statistic and build two global tests, respectively, via integrating the pointwise F-test statistic or taking its supremum over an interval of interest. The asymptotic distributions of test statistics under the null and some local alternatives are derived. Methods for approximating their null distributions are discussed. An application of the proposed methods to density function data is also presented. Intensive simulation studies and two real data examples show that the proposed tests outperform the existing competitors substantially in terms of size control and power.  相似文献

Early investigations of the effects of non-normality indicated that skewness has a greater effect on the distribution of t-statistic than does kurtosis. When the distribution is skewed, the actual p-values can be larger than the values calculated from the t-tables. Transformation of data to normality has shown good results in the case of univariate t-test. In order to reduce the effect of skewness of the distribution on normal-based t-test, one can transform the data and perform the t-test on the transformed scale. This method is not only a remedy for satisfying the distributional assumption, but it also turns out that one can achieve greater efficiency of the test. We investigate the efficiency of tests after a Box-Cox transformation. In particular, we consider the one sample test of location and study the gains in efficiency for one-sample t-test following a Box-Cox transformation. Under some conditions, we prove that the asymptotic relative efficiency of transformed t-test and Hotelling's T 2-test of multivariate location with respect to the same statistic based on untransformed data is at least one.  相似文献

In this article, procedures are proposed to test the hypothesis of equality of two or more regression functions. Tests are proposed by p-values, first under homoscedastic regression model, which are derived using fiducial method based on cubic spline interpolation. Then, we construct a test in the heteroscedastic case based on Fisher's method of combining independent tests. We study the behaviors of the tests by simulation experiments, in which comparisons with other tests are also given. The proposed tests have good performances. Finally, an application to a data set are given to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed test in practice.  相似文献

Establishing that there is no compelling evidence that some population is not normally distributed is fundamental to many statistical inferences, and numerous approaches to testing the null hypothesis of normality have been proposed. Fundamentally, the power of a test depends on which specific deviation from normality may be presented in a distribution. Knowledge of the potential nature of deviation from normality should reasonably guide the researcher's selection of testing for non-normality. In most settings, little is known aside from the data available for analysis, so that selection of a test based on general applicability is typically necessary. This research proposes and reports the power of two new tests of normality. One of the new tests is a version of the R-test that uses the L-moments, respectively, L-skewness and L-kurtosis and the other test is based on normalizing transformations of L-skewness and L-kurtosis. Both tests have high power relative to alternatives. The test based on normalized transformations, in particular, shows consistently high power and outperforms other normality tests against a variety of distributions.  相似文献

A new two-sample rank test for location is proposed. This test, called the D-test, is asymptotically efficient for underlying densities which follow a “flat-topped” Laplace distribution. The D-statistic is simple to compute, and the test may be suitable when there is censoring. The D-test includes the median test as a special case.  相似文献

We derive likelihood ratio tests for the equality of the directional parameters of k bipolar Watson distributions defined on the hypersphere with common concentration parameter. We analyze the power of these tests in the case of two distributions supposing in the alternative hypothesis two directional parameters forming an angle, which varies from 18° to 90°. We also compare the likelihood ratio tests with a high-concentration F-test.  相似文献

The Friedman (1937) test for the randomized complete block design is used to test the hypothesis of no treatment effect among k treatments with b blocks. Difficulty in determination of the size of the critical region for this hypothesis is com¬pounded by the facts that (1) the most recent extension of exact tables for the distribution of the test statistic by Odeh (1977) go up only to the case with k6 and b6, and (2) the usual chi-square approximation is grossly inaccurate for most commonly used combinations of (k,b). The purpose of this paper 2 is to compare two new approximations with the usual x2 and F large sample approximations. This work represents an extension to the two-way layout of work done earlier by the authors for the one-way Kruskal-Wallis test statistic.  相似文献

When carrying out data analysis, a practitioner has to decide on a suitable test for hypothesis testing, and as such, would look for a test that has a high relative power. Tests for paired data tests are usually conducted using t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test or the sign test. Some adaptive tests have also been suggested in the literature by O'Gorman, who found that no single member of that family performed well for all sample sizes and different tail weights, and hence, he recommended that choice of a member of that family be made depending on both the sample size and the tail weight. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive test. Simulation studies for n=25 and n=50 show that it works well for nearly all tail weights ranging from the light-tailed beta and uniform distributions to t(4) distributions. More precisely, our test has both robustness of level (in keeping the empirical levels close to the nominal level) and efficiency of power. The results of our study contribute to the area of statistical inference.  相似文献

Under proper conditions, two independent tests of the null hypothesis of homogeneity of means are provided by a set of sample averages. One test, with tail probability P 1, relates to the variation between the sample averages, while the other, with tail probability P 2, relates to the concordance of the rankings of the sample averages with the anticipated rankings under an alternative hypothesis. The quantity G = P 1 P 2 is considered as the combined test statistic and, except for the discreteness in the null distribution of P 2, would correspond to the Fisher statistic for combining probabilities. Illustration is made, for the case of four means, on how to get critical values of G or critical values of P 1 for each possible value of P 2, taking discreteness into account. Alternative measures of concordance considered are Spearman's ρ and Kendall's τ. The concept results, in the case of two averages, in assigning two-thirds of the test size to the concordant tail, one-third to the discordant tail.  相似文献

We consider testing the quasi-independence hypothesis for two-way contingency tables which contain some structural zero cells. For sparse contingency tables where the large sample approximation is not adequate, the Markov chain Monte Carlo exact tests are powerful tools. To construct a connected chain over the two-way contingency tables with fixed sufficient statistics and an arbitrary configuration of structural zero cells, an algebraic algorithm proposed by Diaconis and Sturmfels [Diaconis, P. and Sturmfels, B. (1998). The Annals of statistics, 26, pp. 363–397.] can be used. However, their algorithm does not seem to be a satisfactory answer, because the Markov basis produced by the algorithm often contains many redundant elements and is hard to interpret. We derive an explicit characterization of a minimal Markov basis, prove its uniqueness, and present an algorithm for obtaining the unique minimal basis. A computational example and the discussion on further basis reduction for the case of positive sufficient statistics are also given.  相似文献

One of the major unresolved problems in the area of nonparametric statistics is the need for satisfactory rank-based test procedures for non-additive models in the two-way layout, especially when there is only one observation on each combination of the levels of the experimental factors. In this paper we consider an arbitrary non-additive model for the two-way layout with n levels of each factor. We utilize both alignment and ranking of the data together with basic properties of Latin squares to develop rank tests for interaction (non-additivity). Our technique involves first aligning within one of the main effects, ranking within the other main effects (columns and rows) and then adding the resulting ranks within “interaction bands” corresponding to orthogonal partitions of the interaction for the model, as denoted by the letters of an n × n Latin square. A Friedman-type statistic is then computed on the resulting sums. This is repeated for each of (n?1) mutually orthogonal Latin squares (thus accounting for all the interaction degrees of freedom). The resulting (n?1) Friedman-type statistics are finally combined to obtain an overall test statistic. The necessary null distribution tables for applying the proposed test for non-additivity are presented and we discuss the results of a Monte Carlo simulation study of the relative powers of this new procedure and other (parametric and nonparametric) procedures designed to detect interaction in a two-way layout with one observation per cell.  相似文献

The literature on testing the unit root hypothesis in the presence of GARCH errors is extended. A new test based upon the combination of local-to-unity detrending and joint maximum likelihood estimation of the autoregressive parameter and GARCH process is presented. The finite sample distribution of the test is derived under alternative decisions regarding the deterministic terms employed. Using Monte Carlo simulation, the newly proposed ML t-test is shown to exhibit increased power of relative to rival tests. Finally, the empirical relevance of the simulation results is illustrated via an application to real GDP for the UK.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss testing for an interaction in the two-way ANOVA with just one observation per cell. The known results are reviewed and a simulation study is performed to evaluate type I and type II risks of the tests. It is shown that the Tukey and Mandel additivity tests have very low power in case of more general interaction scheme. A modification of Tukey's test is developed to resolve this issue. All tests mentioned in the paper have been implemented in R package Additivity Tests.  相似文献
