传媒类高职院校学生情感因素与大学英语教学的调查

通过调查山东传媒职业学院464名学生的英语学习情况,探究传媒类高职院校学生情感因素与大学英语教学之间的关系。结果表明：传媒类高职学生的英语基础普遍较弱;自信心不足,学习动机缺乏稳定性,克服困难的意志一般。因此,教师要注重与学生的沟通,注重培养学生的积极情感,鼓励学生主动探索和解决学习中出现的问题。     

The white native speaker and inequality regimes in the private English language school

Private English language schools market the language as a tool that helps one connect with others from different cultures. Despite their promotion of English aiding in intercultural communication, these institutions may believe that only the white native speaker is the ideal teacher of the language. This valuing of the white native speaker can consequently act as an organisational inequality regime that marginalises nonwhite teachers. Using qualitative interviews with 10 nonwhite instructors working in schools in Toronto, Canada, this article investigates the ways in which these teachers experience the inequality regime of the white native speaker at work. The findings indicate that the teachers experience this inequality regime as a series of microaggressions that involve space, competence and customer desire. The article concludes with suggestions to dismantle inequality regimes in private institutions.

Preparing Teachers for English Learners: Integrating Academic Language and Community Service Projects

In this article we highlight elements of culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy that prepare teachers to work with English Learners (ELs) from a variety of backgrounds. Specifically, we focus on the learning experiences and practices of one secondary social studies teacher to explore promising practices with ELs and effective teacher preparation strategies. This article highlights two specific strategies used by the teacher: the intentional integration of academic language instruction through sheltered instructional observation protocol (SIOP) and community-engaged service learning. The findings suggest that the teacher improved his EL instruction, specifically within the context of his social studies curricula, and his experiences and reflections offer insights for teacher educators who seek to better prepare in-service and preservice teachers to serve ELs and their families.

就业导向下高职大学基础英语与专业英语融合的必要性

目前的高职大学英语教学模式已不能满足当今社会发展对培养"专业+英语"复合型人才的需要。在分析当前高职大学英语教学存在问题的基础上,指出专业英语教学与大学基础英语教学融合的必要性,并从教材、教学模式、师资、测试制度等方面提出了改革措施。     

Instructor Active Empathic Listening and Classroom Incivility

Instructor listening skill is an understudied area in instructional communication research. This study looks at teachers’ active empathic listening behavior association with student incivility. Scholars recognize student incivility as a growing problem and have called for research that identifies classroom behaviors that can affect classroom climate. A total of N = 434 undergraduate students were surveyed about their observations of student incivility in their classes, their perceptions of their instructor’s use of active empathic listening and nonverbal involvement, class size, instructor gender, and estimated instructor age. After controlling for nonverbal involvement, instructor age, instructor gender, and class size, results suggest active empathic listening associates negatively with three types of classroom incivility. Both class size and instructor nonverbal immediacy also emerged as predictors of student incivility.     

Nonverbal communication of pharmacists during counseling leading to patient satisfaction: evidence from Iranian retail market

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of nonverbal communication of community pharmacists on patients’ satisfaction throughout the counseling process. Eight dimensions of nonverbal communication have been taken into account: vocalics, kinesics, proxemics, haptics, oculesics, olfactics, chronemics, and atmospherics. To gather data relevant to the aim of this study, a survey was conducted among the pharmacies in the city of Tehran (Iran). A questionnaire was offered to patients waiting to receive their medicine asking them about the nonverbal communication of the pharmacists and the degree of their satisfaction of service encounters. Proposed hypotheses were tested with a structural equation modeling approach using the Smart PLS software package. The results strongly support the theoretical model and suggest that there is a significant correlation between all components of nonverbal communication (excluding proxemics and haptics) and consumers’ satisfaction. The originality of this article is that it is the first empirical research to evaluate all aspects of the nonverbal cues of pharmacists and their effects on patient satisfaction. Considering the relatively high growth rate of the Iran retail market, this study has profound implications for academia and the practice of pharmacy.

Are Turkish EFL pre-service teachers ready to manage intercultural challenges?

English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers, as the backbone of language teaching system, are expected to raise the awareness level of students’ intercultural communication competence by helping them relate their own culture to foreign cultures, empathise with foreign cultures’ perspectives and tolerate the ambiguities or differences. This study examines the relationship between certain personal factors such as age, gender, year of study, overseas experience and students’ preferences for Turkish movies over foreign ones and three predictors of intercultural communication competence namely, ambiguity tolerance, empathy and open-mindedness. The sample group of the study consisted of 145 prospective English teachers in the Educational Faculty of a state university in Turkey. The participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire consisting of two parts which investigated their background and perceived levels of ambiguity tolerance, open-mindedness and empathy in Turkish EFL context. The results indicated that half of pre-service EFL teachers had poor intercultural communication competence. In particular, males, the final-year students and those who had been abroad indicated higher levels of tolerance than their respective counterparts. Besides, age and students’ preferences for Turkish or foreign movies were not significant factors in any of the predictors of intercultural communication competence.     

高校艺体生开展专业化英语教学的困境与出路

通过零压力英语摸底测试和座谈得出高校艺体类专业开展专业化英语教学存在学生基础薄弱、班级分配不合理、师资不足、教学效果不明显等弊端。在充实师资力量的基础上,利用多媒体教学方式对艺体类学生开展分级教学,并加强课堂多元素的运用,活化英语专业知识和术语的学习,可实现艺体类学生英语学习专业化,从而达到将学生培养成为专业加英语的复合型人才的目的。     

Developing intercultural competence of teachers of English as a foreign language through an international project

This paper reports an international project which took place at Nicolaus Copernicus University, where students and teachers from four European universities met for a two-week summer school. The main objective was to develop intercultural competence of teachers of English as a foreign language and their ability to demonstrate this skill during an English lesson. The paper depicts the tools implemented in the project and shows how they affected the learning outcomes by presenting the students’ and teachers’ perspectives.     

FROM TEXT TO GESTURE ONLINE: A microethnographic analysis of nonverbal communication in the Second Life virtual environment

A transition from text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC) to online interaction that includes both textual and nonverbal discourse represents a new development in online communication and a significant challenge to prevailing models for the analysis of CMC. This paper presents results of a six-month-long ethnographic research of nonverbal communication (NVC) in the Second Life (SL) virtual environment. A set of 108 SL locations selected in a non-structured manner provided a wide range of communicative contexts for the analysis of naturally occurring user interaction. The study was focused on the analysis of proxemic and kinesic cues. The results have pointed to a significant difference between user-defined and predefined nonverbal cues, indicating that user-defined NVC has stronger potential to enhance online interaction.

Pragmatic Differences of Politeness Between English and Chinese

Politeness is one of the important language behaviors used to maintain social order.As a universal phenomenon,politeness plays a crucial role in helping maintain social harmony and friendly interpersonal relationships.In different languages,pragmatic difference clearly exits.Not only the politeness principles are different in English and Chinese,but also the practical use.For example,compliments,responses,addresses,euphemisms and greetings.This paper aims to make a contrastively pragmatic study of politeness between the American English and Chinese to discuss their pragmatic differences and analyze the different politeness principles in both languages.The main courtesy language in some situations and a contrastive analysis concerning cultural values between the two languages are included.The paper aims to discover the distinctions between the two different cultures and point out the significance of politeness in the cross-cultural communication and English teaching.
