Summary Based on the results of ecological surveys ofAdoxophyes orana and its natural enemies in apple orchards sprayed with the granulosis virus and control plots, we constructed working models
to simulate the population dynamics in three different experimental plots; those treated with chemical insecticides, those
with granulosis virus, and controls. The number of individuals killed by predators, parasitoids and by miscellaneous mortality
factors could be calculated on the assumption of imperfect density relations; that is, relation of the number killed by each
factor with the initial number of larvae was represented by a curve with an upper asymptote. We could estimate the proportion
of virus infection using curves with upper asymptotes. Rate of increase from pupa to middle instar larvae of the next generation
was subject to strong density-effect.
Simulation we proposed in this paper suggests a possibility that a single spray of the virus at 1st generation can reduce
not only the number ofA. orana larvae in the 2nd and 3rd generations but also the degree of fruits injured by this insect. Spray of chemical insecticide
is considered to be ineffective in reducing the pest density and the degree of injury to low levels in subsequent generations,
as compared with untreated plot, where the density of the 1st generation larvae is low. 相似文献

The population density of herbivores depends on the spatial scale as well as the temporal scale. In a small-scale, short-term
experiment, the number of individuals entering from the surrounding area will be most influential in determining the herbivore
density. In large-scale, long-term experiments, however, the density of herbivores will rather be influenced by the survival
rate of individuals inside the field because most of the herbivorous population derives from the parents that developed inside
the field. If we want to predict the large-scale long-term density of herbivores, therefore, emphasis should be placed on
the estimation of survival rate. To elucidate the effects of plant density on the large-scale long-term abundance of cabbage
pests, we examined the survival rates of three lepidopterous pests, the small white butterfly Pieris rapae crucivora Boisduval (Pieridae), the beet semi-looper Autographa nigrisigna (Walker) (Noctuidae), and the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Yponomeutidae) under two levels of plant spacing (sparse plot, 2 m × 2 m interval; dense plot, 0.5 m × 0.5 m
interval). The experiment with four blocks was repeated in two seasons. The number of eggs per plant was larger in the sparse
plots than in the dense plots for all species. The survival rate of eggs and larvae, on the contrary, was lower in the sparse
plots than in the dense plots. The lower survival rate of eggs in the sparse plots was mainly caused by the density dependency,
while the lower survival rate of larvae in the sparse plots was mainly caused by the direct effects of plant density. It was
thus suggested that the density of herbivores may become lower in the sparsely planted field in the long run because of the
higher mortality of larvae.

The outbreak mechanisms of the green rice leafhopper,Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, in northern Japan
Intraspecific regulatory processes keep the population ofNephotettix cincticeps stable at a low density in southern Japan. In northern Japan, however, the yearly population density of the insect fluctuates
violently, and large outbreaks occasionally take place. To clarify the difference in the population dynamics between the two
regions, we analyzed light-trap and sweep-net sampling records from prefectural and national agricultural experimental stations.
The survival rate of the overwintering population decreased with increases in the period of continuous snow cover (PCSC) in
the north, and initial population densities in the years of long PCSC were too low for populations to reach equilibrium density
by the end of the active breeding season. This made yearly population fluctuations in the north much larger than in the south.
The equilibrium density in the north was higher than in the south. The higher equilibrium density presumably permits the higher
population density and larger yearly population fluctuations in the north. A major factor responsible for the difference in
equilibrium densities between the two regions is the difference in heading dates of the host plant (rice). Qualitative differences
among rice plant varieties, and among biotypes ofN. cincticeps, may also be important. 相似文献

Summary The three year (1988–1990) life tables ofNephotettix cincticeps were constructed, and the daily survival rate and longevity of female adults were estimated by Hokyo and Kiritani’s (1967)
method for the overwintering and the first-generations on the foxtail grass in Okayama, southwestern Japan. The life tables
and the population parameter values estimated were compared with those in the other generations on rice. The FARMCOP suction
sampler was employed to survey the population density.
The durations of pre-ovarial maturation of female adults of the 1st generation on foxtail grass and rice seedling were similar.
Longevity of adults of the overwintering and the first generations which emerged on the wild host was longer than that of
the other generations (2nd and 3rd generations) on the rice plants. Fecundity of females decreased successively as the generation
proceeded and it became lowest in the final 3rd generation.
Only about 3.5 percent of first-instar nymphs of the 1st generation emerged as adults in the fallow field. The survival rate
of nymphs on foxtail grass was always lower in comparison with that on rice plants. However, the survival rates of nymphs
on foxtail grass and rice seedling were not significantly different from each other under laboratory conditions. In the fields,
senescence of foxtail grass occurred in the midst of nymphal period of the 1st generation. The survival rate of nymphs on
foxtail grass decreased with the increasing in the nymphal density. Abundance of spiders during the 1st generation was higher

Summary Population dynamics ofNephotettix virescens was studied in 17 paddy fields transplanted at intervals of about 1 month in 1988–1990. The adult density was highest either
in the immigrant or the 1st generation and sharply decreased to the 2nd generation. The survival rate of the 1st generation
was lowest in the transition season when areal population density increased. Key factor analysis revealed that the nymphal
and adult mortality of the 1st generation (kn) was the principal source of population fluctuations. No significant correaltion
was found between kn and natural enemy density, natural enemy density/healthy egg density, or the precipitation during the
nymphal period. On these bases adult emigration was suspected to be the key factor. Areal population build-up ofN. virescens in the transition season was considered to occur as a result of increasing immigration to young stages of rice.

Summary Two adjacent stations (H and L) were set up to study movement ofC. saccharivorus adults in sugarcane fields. At the beginning of the study the density ofC. saccharivorus including all stages of development was quite different between the two. The density of the first generation adult on Station
H was about 5 times that on Station L. The number ofC. saccharivorus on both the stations became almost the same one month after the beginning of the study. At the beginning of the study macropterous
adults were more numerous in Station H than in Station L. However percentage of macropterous adults on Station L increased
after one month whereas that on Station H declined.
About 2,000 marked adults were released on each station during the early period of the emergence of the first generation adult.
Marked insects were recaptured on both the stations one month after the release. The adults released on the dense population
(H) tended to disperse more actively than those on the scarce population (L). Marked macropterous adults moved more actively
than brachypterous ones. The density related dispersal of adults was considered to be an important factor to regulate the

Summary The population dynamics ofNephotettix virescens, a vector of rice tungro virus disease was investigated in a synchronized transplanting area at Jatisari (1984–1986), West
Java and in a staggered transplanting area at Sidan (1986–1988), Bali, Indonesia. The FARMCOP suction sampler was employed
for population censuses ofN. virescens and its natural enemies. The population growth pattern was affected by transplanting pattern: In the staggered transplanting
area, the population density increased from the immigrant generation to the first generation, and sharply decrease thereafter,
while in the synchronized transplanting area the population density often reached the highest peak in the second generation.
The degree of contageousness in the spatial distribution ofN. virescens was negatively correlated with population density of the immigrant generation.

Summary This paper describes a series of experiments conducted to determine whySitophilus zeamais
Mots. andSitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) could not survive together in maize cultures in the laboratory. The effect ofS. zeamais on different developmental stages ofS. cerealella was investigated. The presence of adultS. zeamais slightly affected moth copulation, egg laying and moth eggs in a mixed culture, but large numbers of developing moths inside
maize grains were killed by the adult weevil through feeding on the grains. The major cause of elimination ofS. cerealella byS. zeamais from mixed cultures was therefore found to be damage to the immature moths in grain and such moth mortality increased as
the developing moths became bigger in the grains. A weevil: grain ratio of approximately 1.4∶1 was found to be the critical

Summary Annual changes in the population of the pine-moth,Dendrolimus spectabilis
Butler, were studied in Kashima district. The insect completes two generations in one year, and the adult emerges in early summer
and again in autumn.
The insect population showed fairly drastic fluctuations in the past years, and a conspicuous peak was recorded in three times,
in 1950, 1955 and 1961. It was noted in each of those three years that a great number of adults of the summer generation emerged
in autumn. The main reason for this great abundance of the insect population seemed to be high survival rate of the young
larvae in summer. It was suggested that the climate in July had powerful influence upon the survival f thos e young larvae.
The effects of natural enemies were usually the greatest on the egg population of the pine-moth in either generation. Much
greater number of insects in the overwintering generation was destroyed by parasites and diseases than in the summer generation.
Finally, a rapid increase of the insect population in autumn was considered to be caused by a combined effect of climatic

Dynamics of the buried seeds and plant population of two dominant weeds, viz.,Emilia sonchifolia (Linn.) DC. andRichardsonia pilosa HBK were studied in the crop fields of Meghalaya, north-east India during radish and maize cropping and intervening fallow
periods. The total buried seed population ofR. pilosa was always larger than that ofE. sonchifolia, but the germinable fraction was invariably greater in the latter. A major portion (39–41%) of the viable (germinable+dormant)
seed population in both weeds was confined to the surface soil layer (0–5 cm). The viable seed population ofE. sonchifolia peaked during April, while that ofR. pilosa showed two peaks (during August and December). The survival pattern and half-lives of seedling cohorts showed, some differences
in the two weed species, but both being summer annuals, their populations behaved in a similar manner by showing higher seedling
recruitment (K) and survivorship (p) rates in the summer crop (maize) than in the winter crop (radish). However, the density of plants that could attain adulthood
was significantly higher inE. sonchifolia thanR. pilosa which might have resulted in greater seed input of the former to the soil leading to its greater abundance in the crop fields.

Summary Based on the results of five-year study on theNezara population, it was concluded that the level of abundance of the insect was determined partly by the combination and relative
adundance of the host plants and partly by the climatic factors. The endless increase of the population was checked by the
deleterious effects associated with the overpopulation which occurred locally. The degree of such overpopulation was determined
by the relative abundance of host plants to the current level of the population. Therefore, even when the general level ofNezara population seemed to be low, there still exists the possibility of overpopulation in some areas.
Winter was the critical period which threatened the persistence ofNezara population. The survival of the hibernating adults was partly dependent on the physiological state of adults which was determined
in the period of pre-hibernation. But when the severity of a winter exceeded the tolerance limit of the insect, the only safety-valve
which prevented the elimination ofNezara was the heterogeneity of hibernacula. Therefore,Milne's theory (1957) was closest to the known facts. 相似文献

Summary It has been theoretically assumed that the population density at the equilibrium oscillates with damping from generation to
generation. In the adult population of the southern cowpea weevil,Callosobruchus maculatus, it was exemplified. But, it was not so clear in the adult population of the azuki bean weevil,C. chinensis as seen in that ofC. maculatus. This difference seems to be due to the scramble type of competition that occurs in larval stage inC. maculatus, instead of in the egg stage asC. chinensis. Comparing with the oscillation from generation to generation obtained in the present experiment to that ofLucilia population found byNicholson, the oscillation inLucilia population is composed of the cycle in a generation and the descending phase of each cycle of it is not regulated density-dependently.
The present result seems to be more appropriate for the demonstration of the theory of self-adjustment of population.

The reproduction ofSogatella furcifera was investigated in a chemically fertilized rice field and an organically farmed field. In the latter, the density of immigrants
was significantly higher, while the settling rate of female adults and the survival rate of immature stages of ensuing generations
were lower. The number of eggs laid by a female of the invading and following generations was smaller, and the percentage
of brachypterous females in the next generation was also lower. Consequently, the density of nymphs and adults in the ensuing
generations decreased in the organically farmed field. For an experimental comparison, potted rice plants were cultivated
using seedlings and soil from the chemically fertilized or the organically farmed fields. WhenSogatella furcifera was reared on these plants, both the reproductive rate and the appearance rate of brachypterous female adults were lower
in the organic treatment. Egg hatchability was also lower in the organic treatment. This experiment suggested that a specific
nutritional condition in rice plants suppressed the population ofS. furcifera in the organically farmed field. 相似文献

Summary Difficulty arises in applying marking-and-recapture methods to insects when the probability of recapture of marked individuals
is changed with advancing age, either due to detachment of the mark by moulting (in the case of larvae) or to changes in their
survival rate or their behaviour. A modification of the re-recapture method (Leslie
et al., 1953) has been devised to analyze the capture-recapture data of the 5th-instar larvae and adults ofNezara viridula L. Estimation of the rate of moulting to the adult stage is made with the aid of additional information on larval survival.
Migration rates of the larvae between the two halves of the census field is estimated byIwao's (1963) method. Through these analyses, the dynamic feature of the population during transition from the 5th instar to, adult
is revealed. Several problems involved in the application of marking-and-recapture methods to insect populations are discussed.

Summary The population parameters of green rice leafhopper,Nephotettix cincticeps in hibernated generation was estimated by the capture-recapture method on the gramineous weeds of resting paddy field from
late in April to mid-May, 1962–1965.
The difficulty of applying the capture-recapture method to this insect is caused from the low density and the low activity
of the leafhopper, so that it is necessary to make the suitable plan of capture-recapture series and to construct the special
method to detect the population parameters.
The number of adults differed greatly among the years and among the plots in the same year. But, in general, the density was
relatively high late in April, and decreased rapidly in May. The number of males was higher than that of females late in April,
but decreased rapidly to become lower in May.
The sampling efficiency with sweep-net depends upon the many factors, such as weather and floristic conditions; especially
the atmospheric temperature and the force of wind are considered to affect greatly to the efficiency. In general, low temperature
and strong wind are the cause of low sampling efficiency.

The role of larval intraspecific competition in laboratory populations ofDrosophila subobscura was investigated. Mortality is density-independent during the first 3 days after hatching but becomes density dependent as
development proceeds to pupation. Although total biomass per patch was independent of initial egg density, competition betweenDrosophila larvae leads to the formation of smaller pupae. This resulted in a population that was dominated by suppressed individuals.
Development rate ofD. subobscura larvae was not affected by high larval densities. Smaller pupae give rise to females with fewer eggs in their ovarioles.
A simple simulation model, predicting the effects of intraspecific competition on the fecundity of the nextDrosophila generation is described. 相似文献

Summary The dynamics of Angoumois grain moth,Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), and maize weevil,Sitophilus zeamais
Motschulsky, populations breeding in a small bulk (initially 5.36 t) of shelled corn were studied over an 8-year period by monthly sampling.
The weevil population showed wide fluctuations in density superimposed on a general decline with time. The moth population
showed no upward or downward trend for the first 60 months, although it fluctuated widely. Following a decline that occurred
between 56 and 60 months, the moth population fluctuated within a much narrower range, and there was a general decrease in
density with time. The decline of the weevil population paralleled deterioration of the corn as did that of the moth population
after ca 60 months, and the decline of both species probably resulted from increasing scarcity of suitable breeding sites.
Both populations exhibited seasonal variation in density with minima in late summer and early fall, following periods of adversely
high temperatures in the storage shed. The populations increased during the fall, leveled off or declined slightly during
the winter months, and then increased to maximum levels in late spring or early summer. It thus appears that high temperatures
had a greater adverse effect on the populations than low temperatures. The grain moth and the maize weevil both tended to
be randomly dispersed at low population levels and moderately aggregated at intermediate and high levels, although the degree
of aggregation was not correlated with population density when low population levels were considered separately, and the maize
weevil showed a greater tendency for aggregation than did the grain moth. Analysis of individual samples at fixed points in
time showed a conspicuous bias for negative correlation between numbers of the two species within sampling quadrats, suggesting
a tendency for the two species to segregate within the grain mass. This process could have resulted from behavioral differences
or from the destruction of one species by the other. Competitive displacement of the grain moth by the maize weevil has been
demonstrated in laboratory experiments but has rarely been observed under natural conditions, and in our study the two species
coexisted for 8 years in a relatively small grain bulk. 相似文献

Summary Intra- and interspecific competition between laboratory populations of four green leafhoppers,Nephotettix spp. was studied in the laboratory under three different temperature regimes of 24°C, 27°C and 30°C. For the single-species
population of the three tropical species, the equilibrium density increased as the temperature increased. On the other hand,
for the temperature speciesN. cincticeps, the highest equilibrium density was at the intermediate temperature and the lowest at high temperature.
Interspecific interactions between two tropical (N. virescens vs.N. nigropictus), a tropical and a temperature (N. virescens vs.N. cincticeps) and a rice-feeding and a grass-inhabiting (N. virescens vs.N. malayanus) Nephotettix species were also studied in the laboratory at the three temperature regimes. Temperature differentially affected the outcome
of competition between twoNephotettix species. BetweenN. virescens andN. nigropictus, the latter was more successful over the former at low and intermediate temperatures, while the former was more successful
at high temperature. BetweenN. virescens andN. cincticeps, the temperate species inhibited the growth of the tropical species at low temperature while the tropical species inhibited
the growth of the temperate species at high temperature. At intermediate temperature, the population ofN. virescens persisted at a slightly higher density over the population ofN. cincticeps. Between the rice-feedingN. virescens and the grass-inhabitingN. malayanus, regardless of temperature the population density of the latter was greatly reduced and later became extinct while the population
of the former continued its growth. These consequences of competition between twoNephotettix species conformed fairly well to those predicted by theLotka-Volterra model using demographic parameters specified for each species. 相似文献

Summary We studied settling-site selection and the resulting survival of two sessile scale insects,Ceroplastes rubens andC. ceriferus, in the citrus tree,Citrus unshiu, in central Japan.
C. rubens preferred 0-year-old twigs most as a settling-site; the density of nymphs settling on 0-year-old twigs was significantly
higher than those on ≥1-year-old twigs, and few nymphs settled on ≥3-year-old twigs. The mean survival rates from settling
until reproduction in the next year were significantly higher on more preferred twigs than on less preferred ones. InC. ceriferus, nymphs significantly preferred 1- and 2-year-old twigs to 0- and ≥3-year-old ones, and the mean survival rates on the more
preferred 1- and 2-year-old twigs were significantly higher than those on less preferred ≥3-year-old twigs. However, the survival
rate on less preferred 0-year-old twigs was slightly higher than those on 1- and 2-year-old ones. Thus, in both species of
scale, it was the preferred twigs which were more profitable sites for survival after settling, except for less preferred
0-year-old twigs forC. ceriferus.
In both scale species, most mortality was due to growth cessation, which is believed to be related to the twig quality as
a food source. Predators and parasitoids were minor mortality factors.
Both species showed constant survival rates until the density of settled nymphs exceeded double the “upper-limit” density,
whereupon they decreased drastically.
Nymphs ofC. rubens settling on twigs of high scale density showed a spacing-out distribution, those ofC. ceriferus did not. InC. rubens, an increase in preference for originally less profitable twigs at the later stage of the settling season was observed, but
not inC. ceriferus. Accordingly, individuals ofC. rubens showed a stronger tendency to avoid conspecifics than didC. ceriferus.
Although nymphs of the two scales clearly preferred more profitable sites, their settling-site selection did not agree with
the predictions from the ideal free distribution theory (Fretwell and Lucas, 1970). The discrepancies were (1) frequent settling
on less profitable sites at the early stage of the settling season, (2) insufficient utilization of the most profitable twigs,
and (3) virtually 100% mortality on overcrowded twigs under conditions where unoccupied profitable twigs still remained. These
discrepancies are thought due to the limited dispersal time of nymphs.

Summary The distribution of nests of the swallows was investigated in 1957, 1962 and 1963 at Koriyama, Nara Prefecture. Roughly speaking,
the nest ofHirundo rustica was located in the urban areas, and that ofH. daurica in the rural areas. This subdivision of the habitat seems to be due to the traditional system more or less depending on some
interactions between them. The trend of the decrease in the nest number has not been found out from the 3-year studies.
The observation on the breeding success ofH. rustica was done in 1963, and it was estimated that 869 youngs in total fledged out from the study area. 相似文献
