The paper reviews a recent body of urban land use and land use planning theory and identifies themes of liberal and radical criticism that have emerged in relation to neoclassical, laissez faire formulations. Liberal and radical reformulations of the problem of land use and land use planning are noted. The final section of the paper considers a possible agenda of issues that are likely to arise with the adoption of the different theoretical stances in South Africa.     

At home with the young homeless

This paper considers ethnographic investigation 'at home' in reference, in part, to research carried out into youth homelessness in Britain. Relations of distance and familiarity in the field, and the notion of the ethnographer as stranger, are discussed so as to advance an understanding of the purpose and practice of participant observation. The paper explores fieldwork relations in the context of urban and social exploration, and also with reference to ethnographic research with young people and/or children. In conclusion, the paper argues for a recognition of difference and distance in fieldwork, not simply as obstacles to be somehow overcome but as something inevitable and necessary to the insights that fieldwork affords.     

At Home with the Missoni Family

This article explores narratives of domesticity present within the spaces, services and discourses of Hotel Missoni Edinburgh. It is argued that the hotel employs a series of marketing strategies evoking the Missoni family as a simulacrum of hosts through references to their home, their domestic practices and their lifestyle to emphasize effects of domesticity with the aim to create a sense of closeness and intimacy between the brand and its consumers. The gastronomic offerings of Hotel Missoni Edinburgh also refer to ideas of family and domesticity, elements associated with Italy and its lifestyle but also characteristic traits of the Missoni brand identity. It is further discussed how Hotel Missoni Edinburgh also employs a series of spatial strategies aimed at augmenting the connotations of domesticity of the hotel to recreate the feel of the Missoni household, producing a sort of hybrid space, also in terms of privacy, that is coherent with the Missoni brand ethos and appealing to costumers.

At Women's Expense:

Analyses of so-called maternal-fetal conflict typically take fetal rights as given. In contrast, this paper argues that rights are socially created and do not come free. It analyzes how courts participate in the social construction of fetal rights in the areas of pregnant women's medical treatment and drug and alcohol use. Women are forced to bear the costs of making fetal rights real, burdening them without demonstrating any clear patterns of benefit to fetuses. It concludes that social policy that cares about women and empowers them will serve fetuses as well.

At Home with Someone Nonhuman

This article explores some new theoretical ground to reveal the many intentions at play within the home. Specifically, I am interested in intentions that are not always reducible to the human agency of the people that dwell there. Whilst we may imaginatively think that we are safe and in charge of the things surrounding us at home, all sorts of forces may be at work there, obscured, in part, by both academic and non-academic considerations. This article traces some elements of a science-studies approach to the network of many different jostling actors in the home space. Through reconsidering the natural scientist's approach to agency and the capacity of entities to object to what we say about them, it is possible to enliven a currently prevalent anthropological stance on home material cultures. From this vantage, we can productively expand the notion of home lives and reveal how things in the domestic are always less than fully domesticated.     

At Home with Video Cameras

ABSTRACT

This article presents a study in which French families have been observed over one week each, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of home activities through video ethnography. This study also seeks to inform the design of home technology (ubiquitous computing) by examining the details of daily life. We used an ethnomethodogically informed reflexive approach to collected video data that meant including household members' orientations to the recording equipment in our analysis. This shows how examining these orientations is valuable not only in terms of understanding family activities at home but also in terms of informing the design of new technology. We demonstrate how the presence of recording equipment can play a role in the routine accomplishment of home life. Some implications of these analyses for the design of home technology are discussed, by focusing on the potential significance of introducing pervasive video cameras in the domestic sphere.     

At Home with Media Technology

ABSTRACT

People's engagement with media devices in the domestic sphere varies greatly, as do the decisions they make regarding when, where, and how the devices are utilized. How do we organize our houses for media consumption and/or creation? How do our houses' spatial configurations affect our media consumption and habits? How does time play a role in media engagement? These questions directly relate to design—our homes are both spatially and temporally designed—by us, and for us. The design issues of creating and maintaining a “home” are compounded by the various media devices we use—telephone, TV, stereo, Internet-enabled computer, and so on. We not only “design” how we use these devices, but where and when they are used. In this context, media devices are not passive objects, but rather through our engagement with them, they alter domestic space/time, and may ultimately challenge how we understand and define domesticity. Media technology simultaneously constructs new, and interrupts existing, domestic territories. We will explore the reciprocal impact of domestic space/time and media technology, with a view to revealing the ways in which this nexus becomes a question of design.

At Home With Derek Jarman

Home is never only of the present. A sense of personal robustness and sometimes political resistance can emerge through a tacking back and forth between homes past and present—especially for those who felt and feel socially or culturally marginalized. We see this vividly in the way the filmmaker Derek Jarman created his home and garden at Prospect Cottage at Dungeness on the Kent coast in the context of his failing health. In this piece I show how formative homes, homes of early adulthood, and aspirations for a different kind of home life inflect the way Jarman lived at Prospect in his here and now. This is about the rolling together of different ages and experiences in ways that can give a sense of endurance in uncertain times.
