Underexplored Aspects of Group-work Education in MSW Programs

Warnings about social group work’s diminished place within social work education date back to 1978. This article reports the findings of a national study exploring the state of group-work education in Council on Social Work Education accredited programs. Our 2014 publication compared study results with those of the 1994 Birnbaum and Auerbach publication. This article highlights additional findings regarding underexplored aspects of group-work education including concentrations/specializations in group work, social work faculty expertise and involvement in group-work associations, efforts to link students with professional group-work associations, continuing education opportunities in group work for field supervisors, online/hybrid group-work course offerings, links between institutional characteristics and group-work offerings, and faculty members’ perceptions of the state of group-work education.     

Some Aspects of Advisory Board Functioning in a Large Urban Area

In order to gain a better understanding of conmunity mental health advisory boards, a survey of board members was conducted to identify their perception of various aspects of board structure and processes and of the adequacy of board and center operations. The sample consisted of 40 respondents representing boards of 15 of the 19 centers of an urban mental health department. Board members tended to be action oriented, highly concerned with the administrative operations of the centers, and satisfied with board meetings and board and center effectiveness. A positive relationship between board members and professional staff, particularly with the director, was associated with positive perceptions of board meetings and members' participation. Strengths and weaknesses of board are discussed and suggestions of topics for future study are offered.

Some Aspects of Empowerment: A Case Study of Work with Disadvantaged Youth

This article describes and comments on negotiations between an agency worker, his supervisors, and a group of disadvantaged young people on the involvement of young people in the appointment of a new agency worker. It provides some background on the actors and the agency, tells what happened and aims to identify some aspects of empowerment through the use of a simple grid. By comparison with the daily experience of disadvantage of the young people involved it is a minor experience in empowerment. Despite that it is a case study placed within a radical tradition espousing the pursuit of social justice.     

对当下文艺理论研究现状的一些思考

中国近30年的文论研究突破了以往机械反映论、庸俗唯物主义等理论桎梏,大胆吸收国外的思想成果,取得了长足的进步。但也暴露出一些自身亟待解决的问题:对社会思潮的关注过于对文本的重视;对新潮理论的追逐过于对基本问题的研究;对西方文艺思潮的引进过于对中国现实问题的关怀,这些却是学界应重新审视的问题。     

Immigrant Success in the Knowledge Economy: Institutional Change and the Immigrant Experience in Canada, 1970–1995

This research examines how institutional changes associated with the emergence of a knowledge economy—specifically the expansion of education and the changing labor market structure —shaped employment experiences of newly arriving immigrants to Canada over the period 1970–1995. Census data on successive cohorts of immigrant men and women (from microdata files for 1981, 1986, 1991, and 1996) show a progressive trend toward lower rates of labor force participation and lower levels of earnings relative to the native-born population, both overall and for most specific origins groups. These trends are only partly attributable to business cycle fluctuations in labor demand. The present article examines the impact of selected educational and labor market changes on successive cohorts of immigrants, using intertemporal substitution methodology. The analysis finds that (1) increased native-born education levels infringe upon the traditional immigrant education advantage, outpacing effects of increased immigrant skill selectivity; (2) increased returns to education among native-born workers do not apply to immigrants; and (3) other institutional obstacles to immigrant success also exist. The declining relative value of immigrant education may be due to the location-specific nature of credential validation processes. Directions for further research and policy analysis are suggested.

A Critical Examination of Immigrant Acculturation: Toward an Anti-Oppressive Social Work Model with Immigrant Adults in a Pluralistic Society

Today, in North America, the idea of complete assimilation ofimmigrants no longer seems relevant. Under the commonly espousedideologies of multiculturalism and pluralism, the goal of socialwork with immigrants is now integration into the host society,whether that be economically, socially and/or psychologically(Li, 2003). However, critics argue that the traditional ideaof immigrant assimilation continues to lurk behind social policiesand social services for immigrants, in that the successful integrationof immigrants is prompted by their conformation to the dominantculture (Balgopal, 2000). While a growing body of literatureon social work with immigrants has resulted in an increasedunderstanding of this diverse population and its needs, theliterature still lacks coherent theoretical and ideologicalframeworks necessary to inform effective models of service delivery.Social work literature on immigrants also requires criticalinterrogation of the impact of social science theories, particularlyin terms of long-held assumptions of culture and acculturation.In this paper, a critical review of literature on acculturationand social work with immigrants will be followed by findingsof a qualitative study with skilled immigrants in Canada. Basedon the research findings, an anti-oppressive approach to socialwork with immigrants is proposed.     

Aspects of Old Age

Summary The opportunity of growing old has extended but it is an opportunityattended by risks. When old age is accompanied by infirmity,ill-health and economic or social difficulties, many problemsarise for the individual and for society. This paper looks atsome aspects of the incidence and nature of old age and at thesupport provided by social services, and the discussion is illustratedby reference to seven elderly hospital patients. The identityof the person found to be most at risk was predictable.
