This paper unravels the treatment benefits of continued work with a 12 1/2 year old girl who remained silent during the therapy. The multiplicity of meanings that silence represented for the patient are innumerated. In addition, the utilization of therapeutic tools such as movement therapy and countertransference are discussed in relation to the psychodynamics of the patient's silence. The paper shows how the therapist and the patient were able to reach a core self-space from which to develop and grow. 相似文献

Music is by and large an underexplored social resource in the organization theory framework. There is small but intriguing literature on the uses of music in organizations, stretching back to the days of the engineering revolution, and a body of texts examining the innovation of musical instruments, but music remains primarily a marginal phenomenon in organization theory. Drawing on a variety of literatures, this paper suggests that music plays a key role in creating possibilities for agency. Studies of the use of music in manufacturing settings and in retailing provide empirical evidence of how music is not detached from broader social interests and concerns but rather is a constitutive element in the social fabric. The paper concludes that music and the scholarly field of musicology are two domains to be further explored in organization theory and management studies. 相似文献

This article examines three major issues. First, it considers the nature of trauma, its cognitive and emotional appraisal, and the cultural variations in its appraisal. In this context, it also distinguishes between universal traumas and culture-specific traumas with pertinent examples. In addition, the conceptual, epistemological, and methodological problems of investigating trauma across cultures are highlighted. Second, the article critically examines the controversies surrounding the nature, theoretical formulations, and methodologies currently adopted in stress research both in Western and non-Western cultures, with special emphasis being placed on the situation prevailing in Indian stress research. Third, it focuses on therapeutic issues and highlights some of the culture-specific healing techniques used by some people in Indian cultures to cope with stress and trauma. Finally, it suggests ways by which one might achieve a rapprochement between Western approaches and non-Western approaches to the study of stress and trauma. 相似文献

Obsessions and compulsions vary in frequency and intensity. Many individuals have habits that cause minimal or no disruption of their lives. OCD, however, causes significant distress and interference with daily life. The problem may go unnoticed by anyone except the involved individual, or it may involve family, friends, and acquaintances. The disorder can be disabling, adversely affecting a student personally, socially, and occupationally. Those who are significantly affected by OC symptoms are encouraged to seek treatment. Behavior therapy and medications are extremely beneficial in helping to relieve symptoms of OCD. Clomipramine and fluoxetine (Prozac) are new drugs available in the US that appear to be effective for OCD symptoms. Several other anti-OCD medications may be available in the US within the next few years. It is important that students and others on campus be made aware that OCD is more common than previously recognized, that more persons with OCD are seeking help, and that effective treatment is available. This "secretive," often disabling disorder is more open now, and it is to be hoped that more individuals will take advantage of current, effective evaluation and treatment modalities. 相似文献

Dialectical dialogue: the struggle for speech, repressive silence, and the shift to multiplicity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gurevitch Z 《The British journal of sociology》2001,52(1):87-104
In the present essay I intend to explore 'dialectical dialogue' in three distinct moments: the battle for recognition, the ethics of giving recognition, and the multiplicity of conversation. The essay begins with Hegel's figures of Master and Slave portraying the struggle of speech for recognition. This struggle culminates in a duel for mastery, which implies the repression and silencing of the other's speech. Ethical dialogue comes as a response to repressive silence, calling the other into egalitarian exchange. Ethical dialogue as such, however, remains within the dialectical framework of agonistic relations. To shift from dialectics to multiplicity, the essay turns from the politics of recognition to the poetics of conversation, to polyphony and to passage. I will follow the three moments both separately, through particular dialogic instances and theoretical perspectives, and as they develop, respond to, and shift from one to the other. Together they will portray an idea of the 'social' as a critical dialogic stance with its inherent dialectical betweenness and potential opening and expanding multiplicity. 相似文献

Children of drug dependent parents form a large and growing population at elevated risk of adverse developmental and social outcomes. In this study 36 children and young people described growing up in such families. Parents tried to shield children from exposure, however the majority of young people demonstrated a detailed awareness of their parents' problem with drugs whilst living with the parentally imposed fiction that drugs were not at the heart of their family dynamic. Children and young people are locked into a silence they find difficult to unburden to anyone. The policy imperative is recognition of the impact on children of living daily with parental drug dependence and means of ameliorating their living circumstances in ways that do not label them further. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis article examines anxiety, arguing that it is a systemic feature of neoliberalism which regenerates the economy and acts in a conservative manner, thereby effectively preventing social change. Anxiety is explored using psychoanalytic theory to extend Foucault’s conception of neoliberal governmentality as proposed in his lectures on neoliberalism at the Collège de France. Relying on Foucault’s notion of governmentality as an analytic perspective, this article does not present the economy or the state as the origin of power in neoliberalism. Rather, these are seen as mediums of power, whereas the anchorage point of power relations is understood to be a particular form of governmentality. In neoliberalism, this anchorage point of power is largely supported and strongly characterised by anxiety. While examining the psychic life of power in neoliberalism, I avoid positioning and thus analysing anxiety either on the individual or the macro level of society. Rather, showing that anxiety exposes the weakness of such clean divisions, it is argued that neoliberal subjects are nowadays governed through anxiety. 相似文献

In recent years Christian Aid has begun to explicitly recognise and respond to discrimination faced by LGBTI people globally. A catalyst for this shift was the re-criminalisation of homosexuality in Uganda, Nigeria, and India in 2014, as well as partner reports of rising violence towards LGBTI people in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, breaking the silence on LGBTI issues within the organisation came predominantly through the emergence of an informal staff sexuality network. This article offers a critique of Christian Aid’s journey from being initially hesitant to engage with issues of LGBTI discrimination to recognising that as a faith-based development agency it can no longer remain silent. Taking such steps, however, has not been without challenges or risks. 相似文献

The publication of texts by Chicana feminists in the 1980s offered an alternative mapping of feminist literary cartographies and subject positions. This article examines the work of contemporary Chicana writer, Sandra Cisneros, whose literary text enacts a practice of Chicana feminism that engages with a transnational, transfronteriza practice of feminismo popular, which literally translates as ‘popular feminism’. This type of border feminism articulates a feminist materialist aesthetics that enables us to re-examine an emergent formation of feminism on the border, a formation characterized by specific types of movements of Mexican women across geopolitical boundaries and borders. The complex movements of this transnational Chicana feminism are announced in the story ‘Woman Hollering Creek’, which complicates the binarisms of the metropolitan opposed to the rural, the core and periphery, and militates against a reductionist opposition of First World versus Third World. I argue that armed with a transfrontera feminism, the protagonist Cleofilas and her peers can resist the power of a transnational media. This story changes the subject of dominant, patriarchal discourse and lets readers imagine how Chicana transfrontera feminism and Mexican feminismo popular can converge in other spaces and under other circumstances to produce socially nuanced global Chicana Mexicana coalitions. 相似文献

This paper analyzes the use of Hindi in English newspapers in India to argue that code‐switching creates a discursive space – a third space ( Bhabha 1994 ) – where two systems of identity representation converge in response to global‐local tensions on the one hand, and dialogically constituted identities, formed through resistance and appropriation, on the other. The results of the analysis of data show that code‐switching: (1) reflects a new socio‐ideological consciousness; (2) yields a new way to negotiate and navigate between a global identity and local practices; and (3) offers a new linguistic diacritic for class‐based expressions of cultural identity. Based on these results, I conclude that code‐switching, as linguistic hybridity, is a third space where social actors (re‐)position themselves with regard to new community‐practices of speaking, reading, and writing. It is in this space that actors are presumed to have the capacity to synthesize, to transform: code‐switching serves as a visible marker of this transformation. 相似文献

Developmental, constructivist theory is applied to increase understanding of conscious and unconscious dynamics of trauma experience. DSM-IV criteria provide the accepted standard guiding research and practice for trauma. Concern is raised that rigid adherence to diagnostic categories is problematic for trauma survivors. Trauma survivors are unique in both conscious and unconscious experience. Saari's (2002) levels of cognitive integration of experience based on Nelson's (1985) tripartite theory of meaning are employed as an investigative tool. Understanding the individual's cognitive integration of the traumatic event is central to facilitating reintegration and healing post-trauma. The therapeutic dyad co-constructs a narrative that allows reintegration and healing. A case study of a childhood sexual abuse survivor demonstrates how relationship dynamics facilitate co-creation of a healing narrative. 相似文献

Where do mobile, individualistic members of modem Britain spontaneously congregate, eg, for public mourning, atid what does this tell us about the construction of solidarity and a sense of society? Where flowers were laid atid books of condoletice provided after the death of Princess Diana in 1997 provides a case study. A survey of 147 cities, towns and villages found that churches were important in cities and villages, but elsewhere, town halls, war memorials, shops and public buildings provided the magnets to bring people together. The role of war memorials and supermarkets is then examined in an analysis of the 1995 revival of the 11th November silence for the war dead. This indicates a) the payoff for companies in showing that they care, b) the impori;ance of practical logistics of space and time. In a plural and secular society, ritual ‘words against death’ become ‘silences against death.’ These congregations of contemporary nomads may not be full‐blown Durkheimian rites, but they are a representation of existing society at the same time as representing popular hope for a better society. 相似文献

Secondary trauma, a relatively recent topic that has emerged in the field of social work, includes the emotional and psychological effects that working with traumatized clients has on therapists. Secondary trauma can seriously impact therapists' personal and professional well-being. Trauma therapists face major ethical dilemmas if their reactions to being traumatized enter into the therapeutic relationship, exposing clients to psychological harm or possibly re-traumatization. As many graduate programs in social work and social service agencies are still unaware of this phenomenon, recommendations are made for how to introduce the topic as priority and how to cope with and prevent secondary trauma. 相似文献

The neuroscience of trauma in increasingly oriented to the importance of understanding right brain to right brain dynamics and helping the therapist to respond to implicit communication, which is discussed, as well as Porges’ polyvagal theory. The traumatized patient presents a variety of challenges to clinicians, including a dysregulated autonomic nervous system (ANS), compromised ability to self-soothe and diminished capacity for relatedness with others. Therefore, one effective approach to treating trauma (especially dissociation) includes conceptualizing and responding to our patients through three separate but interconnected lenses: (1) patient and therapist as human mammals—orientation to the ANS, (2) patient and therapist as personalities—orientation to the internal world and, (3) patient and therapist as inhabiting an intersubjective field together—orientation to shared, co-created body/psychological states. The capacity to be guided by countertransference is an especially valuable skill for therapists, as well as the ability to know when they are being experienced as helper or adversary by their patients. Different dynamics driving dissociation and different strategies for responding to the dissociating patient are discussed. Clinical examples are included. 相似文献

This paper explores how trauma (individual, cultural, and historical) experiences and gender stories of women behaving more like men become intermingled. Drawing upon stories of women in Jewish literature (Beruriah and Yentl), psychoanalytic theories of gender, and intergenerational transmission of trauma, the author unpacks how women carry vulnerability and helplessness whereas men are seen as stronger and agentic. The author believes that gender performance and passing highlight how gender becomes enlisted as a mode of traumatic transmission and possibly 1 type of internal psychic reparative resolution to complex traumatic experiences. 相似文献

This paper deals with some of the linguistic difficulties I encountered during fieldwork conducted among cloistered and non-cloistered
communities of Roman Catholic nuns. I illustrate here the necessity for taking both active and passive research modes—that
is, moving from observer to participant and back—in order to counteract problems related to interaction styles, lack of language,
meaning inversions, and silence as a mode of communication. These problems represent a continuum—a progression from least
to most problematical in terms of the connection between researcher and researched. I argue that by adopting a stance appropriate
to the groups being studied—that is, by using both active and passive research strategies with equal rigor—many linguistic
barriers can not only be overcome, but usedas sources of important data. 相似文献

Since the United States Census Bureau began collecting data regarding grandparents raising their grandchildren, the American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) population has had the highest proportion of families led by grandparents as the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. Despite this, research into AI/AN grand-families is limited. To begin to fill this gap, this qualitative study of 49 AI/AN grandparents raising grand-families (GFs) was conducted in an urban area with one of the highest AI/AN populations in the United States. Results indicated that loss and trauma within the middle generation is a central theme for GF formation. Such GFs also reported using a variety of services spanning state, tribal, and urban AI/AN programs, with educational support as a primary need articulated for their grandchildren. Surprisingly, enculturation was not mentioned as a primary driver of GF formulation. The study suggests a need for further exploration of the needs of urban-based AI/AN GFs, and that service providers must be aware of such issues when working with AI/AN GFs. 相似文献
