From Story to Science: The Contribution of Reading Fiction and Hybrid Stories to Conceptual Change with Young Children

This quasi‐experimental study with 34 preschoolers explores how fictional and hybrid storybooks contribute to conceptual changes in preschoolers' understanding of lunar concepts. Interviews and children's drawings before and after reading sessions provided the data. Findings revealed that (i) young children have intuitive knowledge and alternative explanations from their experiences and lay culture, (ii) storybook messages and illustrations cause misconceptions and (iii) hybrid stories increase protoscientific explanations among children of both genders. Combining accurate scientific information and enjoyable context makes hybrid storybooks effective edutainment for preschoolers.

阿拉伯人的文化心态与阿拉伯局势的发展有着千丝万缕的联系.当代部分阿拉伯人的某些文化心态具有一定代表性,与西方交往的惨痛经历使他们对西方缺乏理性的认识,而悠久的历史遗产又成为他们的历史包袱,对宗教的理解往往未能从总体上把握精髓.但也应认识到:对阿拉伯人的认识不可一概而论,9·11事件后,阿拉伯世界理性反思的呼声正日益高涨,阿拉伯人的思考、探索受到外界困难环境制约,但阿拉伯人一定能摆脱痼习,创造光明的明天.

进入21世纪,阿拉伯经济面临机遇更面临挑战.全球化推动了阿拉伯经济私有化、区域化和一体化的进程,也使阿拉伯经济受到单一化、依附化和边缘化的挑战.在全球化条件下,阿拉伯经济能否消除欧美经济集团争夺的阴影,摆脱战争和冲突的危机,开创阿拉伯经济一体化的新局面,顺利融入全球化经济,直接关系到阿拉伯经济在全球化中的生存空间和发展前途.

There's More Than Meets the Eye: The Nuances of Case Management

In this exploratory study, 50 mental health case managers from 2 Midwestern states were interviewed to capture their observations about the consumers they serve; aspects of the job they like and dislike; and their beliefs about the concept, process, and possibility of recovery from mental illness. The nature of the professional relationship in case management is described from the perspective of these professionals, as well as the methods these informants identify as key to the helping process. It is argued that effective case management requires complex and nuanced professional skills that might go unrecognized and underappreciated in community mental health.
