Alona Vostrikova teaches what she preaches; she promotes a strong body, and mind, during her Pilates classes. She teaches Pilates in the Westin Hotel, in Beijing＇s Chaoyang District. Alona was born and raised in Blagoveshchensk, a relatively small town in Russia that is close to the border with China. In fact, Alona was able to see China through binoculars. In 1997, Alona decided to cross the river and study Mandarin in Changchun, a city in Jilin Province. It was an opportunity for Alona, who had majored in physical education at the Russian State Academy of Physical Education, to start a new life and career-- in China.

Safe-Healthy Growth Project Trips to the Northeast安康计划东北行活动启动On September 3, the All-China Women's Federation started the activities "safe-healthy growth project trips to the Northeast" in Fuxin City of Northeast China's Liaoning Province. The safe-healthy growth project was established in 2000 by the ACWF. Its aim is to help children stay in school and protect them from illness, injury and crime.

A team from the Committee for Internal and Judicial Affairs （CIJA）, under the Gansu Provincial People＇s Congress, visited Dingxi and Baiyin （cities in Gansu Province） on September 16, to monitor the cities＇ implementation of the Law of the People＇s Republic of China on the Protection of Women＇s Rights and Interests. The team was headed by Wang Lan, Deputy Director of the Office of C1JA. Officials fiom Gansu Women＇s Federation accompanied the team.     

Mural Paintings in A Liao Tomb

It was a custom in the Liao Dynasty to decorate tombs with murals. The paintings in Zhao Dejun's tomb, excavated in Beijing, provide a well-known example. During the Five Dynasties period, Zhao Dejun was a warlord in Youzhou, which became the southern capital of Nanjing in the Liao Dynasty (and even later, was renamed Beijing). The Zhaos grew to become a very powerful family in the area, as can be seen from the size of Zhao's tomb and the value of the funerary objects buried with him. His tomb

More than 350 students, from 11 universities in Zhengzhou （capital of Central China＇s Henan Province）, recently attended a training course on employment at Henan Institute of Education. Women's Art and Women Artists in Cultural Change

ON March 3rd, 1998, an exhibition titled "Century · Women" drew up its curtain at the China Arts Gallery in Beijing, and attracted a vast number of visitors with its large scale, historical overview, and representation of a great number of painters with various styles. While people strolled in the gallery, a lively forum on the topic of "Visual Angle of Gender: Women's Arts and Women Artists in Cultural Change" was also taking place in Beijing. The purpose of the forum was to corroborate the academic value of the exhibition, as well as to analyze the cultural significance of women's art through the exploration of the history and present situation of Chinese women's art, Over 30 scholars and artists presented speeches on the topic; the audience numbered in the hundreds.     

A Thousand-li Journey Is Started by Taking the First Step

FOUR years ago, Hu Ping, then the Minister of Commerce, was doing an investigation in Hubei Province in central China. This busy minister took the opportunity to stroll through the market and buy himself a pair of brown mesh oxhide shoes which he put on immediately. Coming back to Beijing the next day, he took off his shoes only to find the heel of the right shoe was missing. With joy and expedition, a newly-married couple went to buy a pair of stylish women's shoes in Xidan, a shopping area in Beijing. The bride put them on at once and only walked a hundred meters before the heels dropped

"Everything is so new!" said, Hon. Zippora J. Kittony, National Chairman of MYWO, on this, her third visit to China. She was amazed at the number of new developments in China-particularly those concerning Chinese women. At the invitation of the ACWF, Madam Kittony led the KenyanWomen's Delegation to China this autumn, to observe Chinese women's participation in political affairs and economic activities. During the 11-day tour of Jiangxi, Shanghai and Beijing, the six-person delegation personally visited rural farming projects run by women, as well as inspecting community services and the development of cities. The Kenyan visitors expressed their support and mentioned how touched they were by the warmth of the Chinese people.     

Hani Women Gear Up for Opening

Most of the 1.253 million Hani people live in mountainous areas between the Honghe and Lancang rivers in the south of Yunnan Province. The Hani language, with a Latin alphabet similar to the Yi language, was formulated in 1957. Both the Hani and Yi nationalities evolved from the ancient Qiang people. The tribe, called Heyi 300 B.C., is said to be the ancestors of the Hani. The tribe moved south to Mount Ailao and Mount Wuliang, the present home of the Hani. The social development of the Hani was unbalanced at the founding of New China in 1949. The area inhabited by the Hani nationality belonged to the feudal society, with some areas still at the end of the primitive society. The Hani people tend to live in the mountainous areas at between 1000- 2500 meters above sea level.
