Fifteen years ago, the UN （United Nations） Fourth World Conference on Women was convened in Beijing. More than 30,000 women gathered in Huairou District, where they called for equality, development and peace in a united voice. The Beijing Plattbrm for Action （BPFA） was unanimously adopted and we cheered and celebrated it with joy and hope. The memories remain in our minds and hearts.

Jessica Zhang believes it is time to give Beijingers a nostalgic trip, to the 1920s, through Parlor, the first Great Gatsby-style bar in Beijing. ＂Our initial idea for Parlor was to make it Beijing＇s first high-end private club. Parlor was the result of numerous conversations with our customers, who lamented that they were missing something in Beijing＇s bar scene,＂ says Zhang, manager of Parlor. ＂They （and we） did not feel there were any bars （in style） of the ＇Great Gatsby,＇ with fine cocktails and the immersive and relaxed atmosphere.

Song Xiuyan, Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the All- China Women＇s Federation （ACWF）, attended the Sino-Australian Workshop on the Protection of Women＇s Rights and Interests in Beijing on June 11, 2014. The four-day workshop （between June 10 and 13） was hosted by ACWF.

Bianyifang Roast Duck
Founded in 1416, the first-known Bianyifang restaurant was located in Mishi Hutong, Caishikou （now in western Beijing＇s Xuanwu District）. The restaurant offered crispy and tasty roast duck （kao ya） and spring chicken （tongzi ji）. Both dishes were very popular with customers.

The China Children and Teenagers＇ Foundation （CCTF） elected new board members and supervisors during the 14th session of its 15th board meeting, in Beijing, on March 18, 2014.     

“我的第一个书包”公益活动在京启动

When the new semester started, 10,000 poverty- stricken, first-time pupils, from 128 schools in 14 provinces or municipalities, were given a meaningful present-- their first schoolbag. The program, entitled ＂My First Schoolbag,＂ was launched on September 1 in Beijing Zhiquan School, a facility for the children of migrant workers. The program was sponsored by the China Children and Teenager Fund （CCTF） and CapitaMalls Asia （China）. Some 10,000 schoolbags and stationery items were donated by CapitaMalls Asia （China）, through CCTF, to Grade 1 students, most of whom were left-behind children, poverty- stricken children or children of migrant workers attending schools in Beijing, Chongqing, or one of 12 provinces. Fan Jiying, Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF） and Vice-Chairperson of CCTF, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

With support from the Canadian International Development Agency （CIDA）, the All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF） and the International Labor Organization （ILO） launched the second phase of the Project to Prevent Trafficking for Labor Exploitation in China, in Beijing, on March 17,2010.

第二届“国际女童日”呼吁关注女童权利 Plan International （China） （an international organization dedicated to helping poor Chinese children access their rights, especially to health, education, a livelihood and protection） and the Beijing Cultural Development Center for Rural Women （BCDCRW） on October 11 held a seminar to mark the Second International Day of the Girl Child. Discussed were gender issues and matters related to disaster reduction.

China＇s State Administration of Grain, in concert with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Communist Youth League, the All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF） and the UN＇s Food and Agriculture Organization （UNFAO）, on October 16 launched a week-long national activity to promote both 2014 World Food Day （on October 16） and the concept of using less food. The kickoff ceremony was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing.     

Anti-drug Activities Held

The China Meets Egypt activity, organized by Beijing Women＇s Federation and the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, was held on October 25 in the Haidian Women and Children＇s Activity Center in Beijing. Ma Lanxia, President of Beijing Women＇s Federation （BWF）, Zhou Zhijun, BWF＇s Vice-President, Magdy Amer, Egypt＇s Ambassador to China, and Karima Nasser AI-Saadi, wife of Abdullah Saleh AI-Saadi, the Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to China, attended. Nearly 300 people, including students from Egypt and residents in Haidian District, participated.
