This article examines a personal safety curriculum (Keeping Me Safe) offered to Standard Three students (mostly nine-year-olds) in five primary schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Staff of the Malaysian NGO, Protect and Save the Children, Association of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (P.S. The Children), facilitated six weekly one-hour sessions featuring games and role play to teach children about potentially unsafe situations and touches, and to develop appropriate safety strategies and skills to ask for help. The students (n = 261) and a control group (n = 184) completed a 25 item questionnaire before and after the program, and for the experimental group only, again two months later. The assessment was supplemented by observations of each session, student interviews, and parent and teacher focus groups. The experimental group students showed substantial gains on about two-thirds of the questionnaire items. However, a minority of the students failed to absorb key messages of the curriculum. Challenges to implementing prevention programs in Malaysia are discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The authors developed a smoking cessation program using mobile phone text messaging to provide tailored and stage-specific messages to college smokers. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The authors recruited 31 daily smokers who desired to quit from a college campus and asked them to use an Internet and mobile phone text messaging program to quit smoking. RESULTS: Six weeks after program initiation, 45% reported abstinence with 42% abstinent based on cotinine verification. Continued smokers reported significantly reduced smoking rates and dependence. Overall, participants accepted the text messages. CONCLUSIONS: These results replicate findings from an earlier study and indicate that mobile phone text messaging is a potentially efficacious and easily disseminated method for providing cessation interventions to young adult smokers.  相似文献

1. While the rate of smoking is extremely high among persons with mental illness, there have been efforts to assist this population to quit. A 10-week smoking cessation program was provided for 10 highly nicotine dependent persons with persistent mental illness. 2. No significant differences were found in psychiatric symptoms or drug side effects prior to and after smoking cessation efforts. Four months later, for the 7 subjects who completed the program, 14% were abstinent, 43% maintained reduced tobacco intake, and 43% had resumed previous smoking patterns. 3. Specific barriers to quitting include a lack of nonsmoking coping skills, long-term identity as a smoker, ready access to tobacco products, nicotine addiction, and limited nonsmoking social support.  相似文献

1. Most people with mental illnesses have made at least one attempt to quit smoking on their own. 2. Psychiatric diagnosis and degree of nicotine dependence do not appear to be predictive of ability to quit. 3. People with mental illnesses are aware of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), but do not combine it with a behavioral program, possibly contributing to the higher rates of recidivism in this population. 4. The lack of participation of mental health care providers in promoting smoking cessation is a complex issue.  相似文献

This study evaluated a group-based training program in social skills targeting reduction of problem behaviors in N = 161 children between 7 and 13 years of age. The effects of the intervention were tested in a quasi-experimental study, with a follow-up assessment 12 months after an optional continuation camp. At the post-test, both the experimental and control group showed less social problems and internalizing problems, whereas only the experimental group showed a small and positive change in social anxiety. After a 12 month follow-up, a subsample of the experimental group (children who followed a continuation camp) showed large positive changes for all outcome measures, except for externalizing problems, showing a small effect.  相似文献

Vaping and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) were equally effective at decreasing craving and withdrawal symptoms for smokers discharged from smoke‐free residential treatment for substance use disorder, a pilot study has found. The study, a randomized controlled trial to be published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research on behalf of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco in Australia, also found that retention was greater for the vaping group (96% at 12 weeks) than the NRT group (68%). For the study, 100 patients received telephone Quitline support and a 12‐week supply of either NRT or a vaping device. At 12 weeks, 14% of the vaping group and 18% of the NRT group report not smoking at all in the last seven days. The researchers concluded that their criteria for retention might have been too strict, and that “some leeway and looking at eventual success over the period people continue to engage with the aids would give a better picture of their long‐term potential.” There is a big movement to legalize vaping in Australia. A key point, however, is that patients readily engaged with smoking cessation after treatment when given the chance. “QuitNic: A pilot randomised controlled trial comparing nicotine vaping products with nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation following residential detoxification” by Billie Bonevski and colleagues is available open access, go to https://academic.oup.com/ntr/advance‐article/doi/10.1093/ntr/ntaa143/5889985 .  相似文献

Introduction: Shelter users have an alarmingly high smoking prevalence; our aim was to develop systematic smoking cessation activities in the shelters. Method: All available (n?=?13) shelters in Copenhagen were included. This Participatory Action Research had a development/test period and an implementation period for the revised intervention. Shelter-staff completed a questionnaire at baseline. Municipal smoking cessation counselors were trained to work with shelter users. Three types of on-site smoking cessation activities were developed and offered. Results: The estimated mean smoking prevalence in shelter users was 79%. Only two shelters ran smoking cessation activities prior to study start. All but one of the shelters implemented group-based intervention activities and approximately 13% of smokers signed-up; 26.6% of those who attended the first session were abstinent after approximately 12 weeks, as confirmed by staff. Conclusion: Smoking cessation activities in shelters are wanted by staff and shelter users, they are feasible and even very vulnerable persons are able to quit. Based on our experiences in Copenhagen shelters, we propose a systematic approach for future smoking cessation initiatives: smoking activities should be driven by the municipality, be pro-active, on-site, tailored and flexible, in addition, free nicotine therapy should be offered and trained smoking cessation counselors should be available.  相似文献

Up to 70% of homeless youth smoke, but there is little information available on their smoking cessation experiences and perceptions to guide cessation intervention efforts. This study examined reasons for quitting smoking, previous experiences quitting smoking, and preferences for smoking cessation programs among homeless young adults. Four focus groups (N?=?27) were conducted in centers serving homeless 18–25 year olds in Los Angeles. Sessions were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by a systematic procedure for qualitative analysis to identify key themes on the topics of interest. The short-term health-related consequences of smoking and high cost of cigarettes were the main reasons participants indicated for quitting or wanting to quit. In terms of barriers to quitting, exposure to peers who smoke and smoking to cope with the daily stressors of homelessness were the two most salient themes. Suggested features of a smoking cessation program for homeless youth included having a group-based component to provide support, offering incentives to attend, and using “scare tactics” as a tool to increase motivation to quit. To increase acceptability and uptake, smoking cessation programs for homeless youth need to focus on the short-term consequences of smoking and harness of the power of peer influences.  相似文献

Abstract

College students' cigarette smoking rose dramatically during the 1990s. Little is known about what colleges do to address the problem. Health center directors at 393 4-year US colleges provided information (response rate: 65.1%) about college policies addressing smoking and the availability of smoking cessation programs. Of the health center directors surveyed, 85% considered students' smoking a problem; yet only 81% of colleges prohibit smoking in all public areas and only 27% ban smoking in all indoor areas, including students' rooms in dormitories and in private offices. More than 40% of the respondents reported that their schools did not offer smoking cessation programs and that the demand for existing program was low. Colleges need to do more to discourage student tobacco use. Recommended actions include campus-wide no-smoking policies that apply to student residences and identification of new ways of providing smoking prevention and cessation services.  相似文献

Objective: This study aims to investigate the effect of smoking on sexual functions in AS patients.

Patients and methods: A total of 67 male AS patients with a median age of 34 years (range: 18–57) reporting sexual activity at least for the past 4 weeks period were included. Patients were divided into smokers (Group 1, n?=?47) and non-smokers (Group 2, n?=?20). Fagerström test for nicotine dependence, smoking history, exhaled carbon monoxide test were recorded for smoking AS patients. Visual analogue scale (VAS), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life (ASQoL), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were filled for both groups.

Results: There was no significant difference between smokers and non-smokers in all evaluation parameters. BASMI scores were significantly lower in the mild dependency subgroup as compared to those with moderate or severe dependency (p?=?.005 and p?=?.007, respectively). Total IIEF score and IIEF categories correlated significantly with BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI, ASQoL, pain, fatigue, and cumulative smoking. BDI showed an inverse correlation with the IIEF score and IIEF category (p?r?=?–0.520, p?r?=?–0.508, respectively).

Conclusions: Sexual function in AS patients is associated with the pain, fatigue, disease activity, functional status, quality of life, depression as well as the cumulative exposure to smoking, and that sexual functions tend to decline with increasing degree of cigarette dependency.  相似文献

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a truancy reduction program. A Regression Discontinuity design was used to assess attendance outcomes for 700 children. Approximately half received a case management intervention, while the other half received a warning letter, only. Truancy rates in the control group remained at the pre-intervention levels, while truancy in the treatment group significantly declined (p < .01). Successful case closure was associated with a reduction in truancy (p < .001). The intervention was less effective with non-White children and with those who had been previously retained. Findings substantiate continued support for the intervention; however, additional resources should include culturally-responsive treatment approaches and academic enrichment programs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Because little is known about college-age smokers, the authors conducted a qualitative study to better understand this population. PARTICIPANTS: Forty college student smokers from 12 Pacific Northwest colleges participated in the study. METHODS: The authors identified themes and built models to ascertain important factors related to smoking and smoking cessation. Four models emerged: smoking facilitators, smoking barriers, cessation facilitators, and cessation barriers. RESULTS: The authors observed physical, psychological, and social influences across models, and social influences were strongly associated with both smoking and cessation. Many smokers were unlikely to define themselves as regular smokers. Most smokers had made prior quit attempts. CONCLUSIONS: College students are a unique category of smoker and colleges can play a role in helping them achieve cessation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Smoking continues to be the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and people with substance use disorders (SUD) smoke at higher rates compared to their non-using counterparts. Individuals with SUDs may have different emotional experiences and expectancies than those without. The current study explored the relationship between smoking and emotional experiences among residents in recovery homes, a population that little is known about regarding their tobacco addiction. Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), significant emotional differences were found between nicotine users and nonusers. Implications of these findings could help in the development of interventions directed toward reducing smoking cessation.  相似文献

The authors surveyed a convenience sample of 208 undergraduate students who reported that they smoked cigarettes. The primary hypothesis they tested was whether gender predicted nicotine dependence. They further tested whether depression and attachment would mediate or moderate this relationship. Hierarchical regression analyses with social desirability and smoking stage of change entered as covariates indicated that women exhibited greater nicotine dependence than men did (p < .01). Lower attachment scores fully mediated this relationship, whereas elevated depression scores moderated the relationship. These findings suggest that depression and the inability to bond with peers may promote nicotine dependence among young female students.  相似文献

While rates of tobacco use on university campuses rose over the past decade, little is known about what institutions are doing to address this rising concern. Health center directors at public institutions of higher education across the state of Texas were surveyed (n = 42) regarding the perceived importance of smoking cessation, prevalence of interventions on their campuses, and perceived success of intervening efforts. While most health center directors regarded smoking cessation as important, over half of the directors indicated that their sites did not offer tobacco cessation services of any kind. Furthermore, of those offering smoking cessation, most believed that their smoking cessation programs were only somewhat or not at all effective. Findings revealed that there is a noticeable gap between perceived importance and actual implementation of smoking cessation programs within university-based health centers. Recommendations include implementing innovative cessation methods, such as those that are Web-based and highly accessible to students.  相似文献

The prevalence of college students' tobacco use is widely recognized, but successful cessation and relapse-prevention programs for these smokers have drawn little attention. The authors, who explored the feasibility of training peers to lead cessation and relapse-prevention programs for undergraduates, found a quit rate of 88.2%, suggesting that peers were effective facilitators. Relapse-prevention interventions, which began immediately after participants quit smoking, included 6 monthly group programs and individual meetings. Each session provided education and training in stress management, nutrition and exercise habits, managing environmental smoking triggers, and coping in social situations. After participating in the relapse-prevention programs, 63.3% of the initial quitters remained smoke free, another indication that peers were effective facilitators. The success of the program, combined with the dearth of population-specific cessation and relapse-prevention tools, suggests that college administrators and health educators should develop integrated tobacco management strategies on college campuses.  相似文献
