We are concerned with testing procedures for umbrella alternatives in the k-sample location problem without making the assumption that the underlying populations have the same shape. Modifications of the Mack-Wolfe tests are proposed for the cases when the peak of the umbrella is known or unknown. The proposed procedures are exactly distribution-free when the continuous populations have the same shape. The modified test for peak-known umbrella alternatives remains asymptotically distribution-free when the continuous populations are symmetric, but not necessarily with the same shape.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new class of distribution-free tests for testing the homogeneity of several location parameters against ordered alternatives. The proposed class of test statistics is based on a linear combination of two-sample U-statistics based on subsample extremes. The mean and variance of the test statistic are obtained under the null hypothesis as well as under the sequence of local alternatives. The optimal weights are also determined. It is shown via Pitman ARE comparisons that the proposed class of test statistics performs better than its competitor tests in case of heavy-tailed and long-tailed distributions  相似文献

Chakraborti and Desu (1988) presented a distribution-free procedure for testing that k (≥1) distributions are equal to a control distribution. They compared their procedure, a generalization of the test proposed by Mathisen (1943), to the procedure proposed by Slivka (1970). They asserted that their procedure has shorter expected duration than Slivka's procedure in life-testing experiments where observations become available in an ordered manner. Here it is proven that, in fact, Slivka's procedure has shorter duration in such circumstances. Normal approximations are presented which indicate that their procedure requires a smaller sample size to guarantee a specified power for Lehmann alternatives and proportional hazard alternatives when all observations are to be observed.  相似文献

A flexible and robust test for the ordered and umbrella alternatives is proposed in this paper. A two-step procedure is presented to make the proposed test be easily applicable. Type I error and power of the given approach are thoroughly investigated by extensive Monte Carlo studies.  相似文献

In this paper we consider generalizations of the distribution-free one-way ANOVA test procedures studied by Puri (1965), such generalizations allowing for possibly different scoring functions for different pairs of samples. The asymptotic distributions of the test statistics are derived and formulas for the asymptotic relative efficiencies of these tests with respect to a parametric competitor are obtained. Applications of these procedures to settings of ordered and umbrella alternatives are presented and potential advantages of this pair-specific scoring scheme are discussed.  相似文献

A class of distribution-free tests for ordered alternatives in a block design is presented. On each block a distribution-free statistic is selected, and a weighted sum of these statistics is then formed. A procedure for selecting the weighting constants which maximize the asymptotic relative efficiency is presented. The improvement in the efficiency of the weighted sum of block statistics over the unweighted sum is considered and proves interesting. Some attention is also given to the idea of using different types of statistics on different blocks.  相似文献

Familiar distribution-free goodness-of-fit tests like the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test are all biased tests. In this paper, we show how to compute the bias of any distribution-free goodness-of-fit test that corresponds to a distribution-free confidence band for the cumulative distribution function (CDF). The bias of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test turns out to be smaller than the biases of other distribution-free goodness-of-fit tests. We also develop a method for obtaining unbiased goodness-of-fit tests, which can then be inverted to obtain unbiased confidence bands for the CDF. Interestingly, only a discrete set of levels are available for the unbiased tests. Our power comparisons show that while removing bias improves the power of a test at some alternatives, it does not improve the overall power properties of the test.  相似文献

In market research and some other areas, it is common that a sample of n judges (consumers, evaluators, etc.) are asked to independently rank a series of k objects or candidates. It is usually difficult to obtain the judges' full cooperation to completely rank all k objects. A practical way to overcome this difficulty is to give each judge the freedom to choose the number of top candidates he is willing to rank. A frequently encountered question in this type of survey is how to select the best object or candidate from the incompletely ranked data. This paper proposes a subset selection procedure which constructs a random subset of all the k objects involved in the survey such that the best object is included in the subset with a prespecified confidence. It is shown that the proposed subset selection procedure is distribution-free over a very broad class of underlying distributions. An example from a market research study is used to illustrate the proposed procedure.  相似文献

A modification of Kendall's test for independence is described which allows one to test for association in a bivariate distribution as measured by Kendall's tau, a property not shared by Kendall's procedure. The proposed procedure, however, still provides an exactly distribution-free test of independence. The test procedure is inverted to obtain a confidence interval for tau which has distinct advantages over the currently employed confidence interval.  相似文献

Optimal sign test for quantiles in ranked set samples   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper considers the one-sample sign test for population quantiles in general ranked set sampling, and proposes a weighted sign test because observations with different ranks are not identically distributed. It is shown analytically that optimal weight always improves the Pitman efficiency for all distributions. For each quantile, the sampling allocation that maximizes the sign test efficacy is identified and shown to not depend on the population distribution. Moreover, distribution-free confidence intervals for quantiles based on ordered values of optimal ranked set samples are discussed.  相似文献

This paper proposes an optimal rank test procedure for testing an umbrella alternative when the peak of the umbrella is known. It is referred to as maximin efficient linear rank test. Also when the peak of the umbrella is unknown, a test procedure is proposed and its performance is discussed.  相似文献

A rank test based on the number of ‘near-matches’ among within-block rankings is proposed for stochastically ordered alternatives in a randomized block design with t treatments and b blocks. The asymptotic relative efficiency of this test with respect to the Page test is computed as number of blocks increases to infinity. A sequential analog of the above test procedure is also considered. A repeated significance test procedure is developed and average sample number is computed asymptotically under the null hypothesis as well as under a sequence of contiguous alternatives.  相似文献

In consumer preference studies, it is common to seek a complete ranking of a variety of, say N, alternatives or treatments. Unfortunately, as N increases, it becomes progressively more confusing and undesirable for respondents to rank all N alternatives simultaneously. Moreover, the investigators may only be interested in consumers’ top few choices. Therefore, it is desirable to accommodate the setting where each survey respondent ranks only her/his most preferred k (k?N) alternatives. In this paper, we propose a simple procedure to test the independence of N alternatives and the top-k ranks, such that the value of k can be predetermined before securing a set of partially ranked data or be at the discretion of the investigator in the presence of complete ranking data. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed test under root-n local alternatives is established. We demonstrate our procedure with two real data sets.  相似文献

A distribution-free test for comparing several treatments with a control is proposed for one-way classified data. It is advantageous to use the test in life-testing experiments where testing time is expensive. The proposed test has a shorter expected duration than a previously proposed test by Slivka(1970). The optimal allocation of the experimental units to the treatments for two situations are given. In a simulation study the power of the test is compared with the power of Slivka's test. An extension of the test for two-way classified data is given  相似文献

SUMMARY For the c -sample location problem with equal and unequal variances, we compare the classical F -test and its robustified version-the Welch test-with some nonparametric counterparts defined for two-sided and one-sided ordered alternatives, such as trend and umbrella alternatives. A new rank test for long-tailed distributions is proposed. The comparison is referred to level alpha and power beta of the tests, and is carried out via Monte Carlo simulation, assuming short-, medium- and long-tailed as well as asymmetric distributions. It turns out that the Welch test is the best one in the case of unequal variances but in the case of equal variances special non-parametric tests are to prefer.  相似文献

A novel distribution-free k-sample test of differences in location shifts based on the analysis of kernel density functional estimation is introduced and studied. The proposed test parallels one-way analysis of variance and the Kruskal–Wallis (KW) test aiming at testing locations of unknown distributions. In contrast to the rank (score)-transformed non-parametric approach, such as the KW test, the proposed F-test uses the measurement responses along with well-known kernel density estimation (KDE) to estimate the locations and construct the test statistic. A practical optimal bandwidth selection procedure is also provided. Our simulation studies and real data example indicate that the proposed analysis of kernel density functional estimate (ANDFE) test is superior to existing competitors for fat-tailed or heavy-tailed distributions when the k groups differ mainly in location rather than shape, especially with unbalanced data. ANDFE is also highly recommended when it is unclear whether test groups differ mainly in shape or location. In this paper we discuss three types of ordered alternatives ordered location, stochastic ordering and quadrant dependence. We prove that quadrant dependence is the more general among the three. Then we consider a conditional tests for the equality of c distributions against quadrant dependence in a multivariate setup. An exact simultaneous testing procedure based on dependent conditional tests is presented. Two applications to real data are also given.  相似文献

There is a wide variety of stochastic ordering problems where K groups (typically ordered with respect to time) are observed along with a (continuous) response. The interest of the study may be on finding the change-point group, i.e. the group where an inversion of trend of the variable under study is observed. A change point is not merely a maximum (or a minimum) of the time-series function, but a further requirement is that the trend of the time-series is monotonically increasing before that point, and monotonically decreasing afterwards. A suitable solution can be provided within a conditional approach, i.e. by considering some suitable nonparametric combination of dependent tests for simple stochastic ordering problems. The proposed procedure is very flexible and can be extended to trend and/or repeated measure problems. Some comparisons through simulations and examples with the well known Mack & Wolfe test for umbrella alternative and with Page’s test for trend problems with correlated data are investigated.  相似文献

Most studies of quality improvement deal with ordered categorical data from industrial experiments. Accounting for the ordering of such data plays an important role in effectively determining the optimal factor level of combination. This paper utilizes the correspondence analysis to develop a procedure to improve the ordered categorical response in a multifactor state system based on Taguchi's statistic. Users may find the proposed procedure in this paper to be attractive because we suggest a simple and also popular statistical tool for graphically identifying the really important factors and determining the levels to improve process quality. A case study for optimizing the polysilicon deposition process in a very large-scale integrated circuit is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.  相似文献
