In 1973, the first report of the development of Societies for Clinical Social Work was published, describing a fledgling movement among clinical workers across the nation. The present survey offers parallel data on that movement ten years later. The movement apparently continues robust growth, and seems more tightly focused on very specific goals which rank highly with society members and their leaders, particularly vendorship issues and education for clinical social work. The opinions of members of these societies suggest that they are firmly identified with social work history, education, and values, but are committed to parity with other independent professionals in the field of psychotherapy. The address of the Washington office of the National Federation of Societies for Clinical Social Work is 2101 L. Street N. W., Washington, D. C. 20037. Ken Adams of Dickstein, Shapiro & Morin is the Legislative Representative and Karen Corey is the Administrative Assistant: phone (202) 785–9700.  相似文献

The Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work credential is considered as a representation of the advanced clinical social worker's professional identity. Various potential audiences for the credential are discussed, including other social workers, other psychotherapists, legislators, third-party payors, clinical social workers and clients. Problems with these audiences are discussed, and conceptualized in political terms. General suggestions are offered to enable clinical social workers to survive and advance in a distinctly political climate. Identification with the value, knowledge and skill characteristics represented by the Board Certified Diplomate status is recommended. This paper is based on ideas originally presented at the Fifth Annual Meeting and Conference of the Texas Society for Clinical Social Work on September 17, 1988 in New Braunfels, Texas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The National Association of Social Workers and the Council on Social Work Education identify social justice as a guiding principle of the social work profession, yet there is little consensus in the field of what the term actually means and how it can be achieved. Master of Social Work programs are likewise struggling with how to educate students on social justice and prepare them to engage in macro-level advocacy after graduating. This article examines how one student-led social justice initiative at a school of social work is seeking to increase student engagement in macro-level social justice work through the use of targeted advocacy alerts. This article explores the project’s development, implementation, first-year feedback, and modifications made to provide other MSW programs a blueprint to adopt their own version of the project. Findings suggest that the targeted alert model may be successful in engaging clinical MSW students in social justice advocacy.  相似文献

Social Work is under attack, not the least of which comes from within its own ranks. Clinical social work appears to the hardest hit as critics question its fit with social work's historic focus on the poor and the oppressed. In addition, there continues to be ongoing controversy regarding the profession as means of social control. Clinical social work has also been attacked for its reliance on the medical model and the growth in private practice. Do these attacks and criticisms signal the end of clinical social work? Or, could this be viewed as part of a process through which social work analyzes its self in its continuing efforts to remain relevant. Is this the evolutionary path of social work? This paper explores some of these controversies and debates. The profession has grown, evolved, and responded to criticism since its inception. A current model for understanding the fit between clinical social work and social justice is presented as an example of how debate continues to lead the profession forward.  相似文献

This paper presents a tribute to Florence Lieberman, a significant leader in the field of Clinical Social Work, who has been and continues to be highly productive and vastly influential. Throughout her career Florence has published books and articles that result from her intense and accurate concerns about social work practice, and particularly about practice with children. Florences academic career includes 20 years at Hunter College School of Social Work in New York. As an influential member of the Hunter faculty, she has played an important role in shaping the impact of social work philosophy on psychotherapy practice. Starting with her Charter membership in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), she has been influential in the development of the Federation of Societies for Clinical Social Work (Federation), the National Academy of Practice (NAP), and the International Committee on the Advancement of Private Practice (ICAPP). Leadership, empowerment, and adherence to Social Works mission are themes that Florence Lieberman has enacted throughout her stellar career. The author discusses his experience with her, which illustrate these essential characteristics.Presented at the International Committee on the Advancement of Private Practice (ICAPP) Meeting on June 9, 2004.  相似文献

This article explores the ongoing internal dialectic between developmental states of merger and autonomy as it unfolds in clinical practice. A review of contemporary theory and illustrative case material suggest that attending to this dialectic-both in the client and in oneself-enhances clinical listening and fosters empathic attunement. An earlier version of this article was presented at the 20th Anniversary Conference of the National Federation of Societies for Clinical Social Work, Chicago, September 27–29, 1991.  相似文献

Stalemated psychoanalytic treatment can be sustained for hears when patient and analyst work in an experience-distant analytic mode. When this occurs patients feel misunderstood, despairing and hopeless, yet, are unable to change their situation. The case of a patient who undertook a reanalysis with a self psychologist is presented to demonstrate how the empathic, experience-near treatment mode enabled the patient to overcome the stalemated problems of the first analysis. The experience of feeling understood was crucial for the deepening of the analytic work, for the furthering of the selfobject transference and for the working through of the fixations and arrests in development.Presented on November 2, 1990, at the Third National Clinical Conference of the Committee on Psychoanalysis of the National Federation of Societies for Clinical Social Work.  相似文献

Identity complexity as an indicator of health   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Although clinicians need to be able to rely on a conception of psychological health, it has been extraordinarily difficult to define health satisfactorily, especially from an adaptational perspective. This paper proposes viewing mental health as a highly developed capacity to create meaning with the content of the sense of self being highly differentiated, articulated and integrated. Examples of how this concept of identity complexity fits with clinical social work practice are provided. This paper was presented at the 20th Anniversary conference of the National Federation of Societies of Clinical Social Work, Chicago, IL, September 28, 1991. The author wishes to thank Sheila Healy for permission to utilize case material.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The history of the Dutch National Databank for Public Social Work began in 1960 in the province of Limburg. Social workers in that province met at a seminar and decided to set up a registration system concerning client characteristics and the counselling process which all the institutes of public social work in Limburg could be required to register in a uniform way. Thirty-three years later Dutch Public Social Work agencies are registering data according to a national system which was wanted, designed and developed by the united local authorities and all the institutes of Public Social Work. As a result, the National Databank for Public Social Work administers the data of all of the 166 institutes in the Netherlands and consequently is privileged to deal with the client characteristics and other specific data of the 250,000 client units that are involved every year with Public Social Work.  相似文献

This paper presents a synopsis of the current thinking on the metapsychology of narcissism, and narcissistic personality disturbances from a psychoanalytic point of view. This view is contrasted with the traditional concepts from ego psychology. The implications of the newer position for the understanding of psychopathology are discussed and two illustrative vignettes are presented. Applications to the clinical practice of social work are formulated. These applications are quite congenial to techniques used by social workers and help to clarify dynamics not formerly well understood. The new approaches give hope for better results with the wide variety of clients and patients seen in social agencies and clinics.Paper presented to the Illinois Society for Clinical Social Work, February 13, 1975.  相似文献

Over the last two to three decades, advances in clinical practice with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals have been extensive. Many clinical social workers now incorporate LGBTQ-affirmative approaches into their practice, and a number of social workers have contributed to the literature on clinical practice with sexual minority clients. Despite these advances, we still require specialized knowledge to understand a number of LGBTQ-related mental health issues. The Clinical Social Work Journal’s first special issue on clinical practice with LGBTQ populations emphasizes psychotherapy techniques that acknowledge and also address social forces (e.g., transphobia, homophobia, and heterosexism) that affect the psychosocial functioning of LGBTQ clients. The special issue focuses on LGBTQ populations, such as transgender and bisexual individuals, sexual minority youth, and older adults, and psychotherapy modalities informed by a number of clinical and theoretical approaches. These in-depth articles offer guidance to clinical social workers who need to expand their knowledge of LGBTQ-related mental health issues and also provide those with existing knowledge an opportunity to refine their clinical skills and sharpen their thinking.  相似文献

This article examines the impact of sensorimotor deficiencies on social and emotional development in childhood. Children who have impairments in processing and coordinating sensory experience are unable to sufficiently develop sensorimotor schemas. Sensorimotor learning, in part, creates the experimential domain of the emergent self and is also a necessary component of core self development as outlined by Daniel Stern. The impact of deficiencies on the core self and, therefore, on social and emotional development are demonstrated with a complicated case example. The treatment process highlights the possibility of reworking core self issues and their effects on self concept and relationships. Multidisciplinary treatment is required to fully address all deficits. The child psychotherapist's role is to attend to the emotional and relational issues, as well as to coordinate the work with family and school.is on the editorial board of theClinical Social Work Journal, is on the faculty of the Institute for Clinical Social Work, and is in private practice.  相似文献

This article presents the results of an empirical study that was designed to ascertain the state of professional morale of the membership of the Connecticut Society for Clinical Social Work. The data suggest a dissatisfaction with career choice. Reassessment of the character and quality of social work supervision emerges as one of the study's implications. This article is adapted from the author's Masters thesis,Social Workers, Social Work, and Professional Self-Perceptions (1978), for the Smith College School for Social Work. Social Work Education and Clinical Learning by Simpson, Williams, and Segall is a welcome and timely statement about the nature of clinical social work and its implications for educational curricula. The authors took on an awesome task. Educating students for clinical practice is increasingly more daunting than it has been previously and is in considerable disarray, if not a state of crisis. In addition to amplifying and expanding some of the major points the authors make, this discussion considers where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. It describes the educational landscape today, which the author views as bleak with respect to its preparation of students for clinical social work practice. In keeping with clinical social work’s inclusive definition that encompasses a broad knowledge base, diverse practice roles, and a wide range of interventions, this discussion emphasizes the importance of numerous unifying themes that help to distinguish clinical social work from other approaches or from the use of a fragmented assemblage of techniques. The paper considers the role of evidence-based practice and makes some suggestions about future emphases in clinical social work. It concludes with a call to alter the educational landscape.  相似文献
