Abstract.  This article extends recent results [Scand. J. Statist. 28 (2001) 699] about exact non-parametric inferences based on order statistics with progressive type-II censoring. The extension lies in that non-parametric inferences are now covered where the dependence between involved order statistics cannot be circumvented. These inferences include: (a) tolerance intervals containing at least a specified proportion of the parent distribution, (b) prediction intervals containing at least a specified number of observations in a future sample, and (c) outer and/or inner confidence intervals for a quantile interval of the parent distribution. The inferences are valid for any parent distribution with continuous distribution function. The key result shows how the probability of an event involving k dependent order statistics that are observable/uncensored with progressive type-II censoring can be represented as a mixture with known weights of corresponding probabilities involving k dependent ordinary order statistics. Further applications/developments concerning exact Kolmogorov-type confidence regions are indicated.  相似文献

In this article, optimal progressive censoring schemes are examined for the nonparametric confidence intervals of population quantiles. The results obtained can be universally applied to any continuous probability distribution. By using the interval mass as an optimality criterion, the optimization process is free of the actual observed values from the sample and needs only the initial sample size n and the number of complete failures m. Using several sample sizes combined with various degrees of censoring, the results of the optimization are presented here for the population median at selected levels of confidence (99, 95, and 90%). With the optimality criterion under consideration, the efficiencies of the worst progressive Type-II censoring scheme and ordinary Type-II censoring scheme are also examined in comparison to the best censoring scheme obtained for fixed n and m.  相似文献

Confidence intervals for the pth-quantile Q of a two-parameter exponential distribution provide useful information on the plausible range of Q, and only inefficient equal-tail confidence intervals have been discussed in the statistical literature so far. In this article, the construction of the shortest possible confidence interval within a family of two-sided confidence intervals is addressed. This shortest confidence interval is always shorter, and can be substantially shorter, than the corresponding equal-tail confidence interval. Furthermore, the computational intensity of both methodologies is similar, and therefore it is advantageous to use the shortest confidence interval. It is shown how the results provided in this paper can apply to data obtained from progressive Type II censoring, with standard Type II censoring as a special case. The applications of more complex confidence interval constructions through acceptance set inversions that can employ prior information are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents a new random weighting method for confidence interval estimation for the sample ‐quantile. A theory is established to extend ordinary random weighting estimation from a non‐smoothed function to a smoothed function, such as a kernel function. Based on this theory, a confidence interval is derived using the concept of backward critical points. The resultant confidence interval has the same length as that derived by ordinary random weighting estimation, but is distribution‐free, and thus it is much more suitable for practical applications. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed random weighting method has higher accuracy than the Bootstrap method for confidence interval estimation.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the progressive Type II right censored sample from Pareto distribution. We introduce a new approach for constructing the simultaneous confidence interval of the unknown parameters of this distribution under progressive censoring. A Monte Carlo study is also presented for illustration. It is shown that this confidence region has a smaller area than that introduced by Ku? and Kaya (2007 Ku? , C. , Kaya , M. F. ( 2007 ). Estimation for the parameters of the Pareto distribution under progressive censoring . Commun. Statist. Theor. Comparative lifetime experiments are of great importance when the interest is in ascertaining the relative merits of two competing products with regard to their reliability. In this article, we consider two exponential populations and when joint progressive Type-II censoring is implemented on the two samples. We then derive the moment generating functions and the exact distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of the mean lifetimes of the two exponential populations under such a joint progressive Type-II censoring. We then discuss the exact lower confidence bounds, exact confidence intervals, and simultaneous confidence regions. Next, we discuss the corresponding approximate results based on the asymptotic normality of the MLEs as well as those based on the Bayesian method. All these confidence intervals and regions are then compared by means of Monte Carlo simulations with those obtained from bootstrap methods. Finally, an illustrative example is presented in order to illustrate all the methods of inference discussed here.  相似文献

Comparative lifetime experiments are of great importance when the interest is in ascertaining the relative merits of k competing products with regard to their reliability. In this paper, when a joint progressively Type-II censored sample arising from k independent exponential populations is available, the conditional MLEs of the k exponential mean parameters are derived. Their conditional moment generating functions and exact densities are obtained, using which exact confidence intervals are developed for the parameters. Moreover, approximate confidence intervals based on the asymptotic normality of the MLEs and credible confidence regions from a Bayesian viewpoint are discussed. An empirical evaluation of the exact, approximate, bootstrap, and Bayesian intervals is also made in terms of coverage probabilities and average widths. Finally, an example is presented in order to illustrate all the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

This article introduces mean-minimum (MM) exact confidence intervals for a binomial probability. These intervals guarantee that both the mean and the minimum frequentist coverage never drop below specified values. For example, an MM 95[93]% interval has mean coverage at least 95% and minimum coverage at least 93%. In the conventional sense, such an interval can be viewed as an exact 93% interval that has mean coverage at least 95% or it can be viewed as an approximate 95% interval that has minimum coverage at least 93%. Graphical and numerical summaries of coverage and expected length suggest that the Blaker-based MM exact interval is an attractive alternative to, even an improvement over, commonly recommended approximate and exact intervals, including the Agresti–Coull approximate interval, the Clopper–Pearson (CP) exact interval, and the more recently recommended CP-, Blaker-, and Sterne-based mean-coverage-adjusted approximate intervals.  相似文献

In this article, we consider a general progressively Type-II censored life test where the lifetime distribution of each test unit belongs to the scale family. We derive an exact confidence interval for the scale parameter. Using Monte Carlo simulation method, we assess the expected lower and upper limits of the proposed confidence interval for the exponential distribution. Finally, we present a numerical example to illustrate the proposed procedure.  相似文献

Let ( X , Y ) be a random vector, where Y denotes the variable of interest possibly subject to random right censoring, and X is a covariate. We construct confidence intervals and bands for the conditional survival and quantile function of Y given X using a non-parametric likelihood ratio approach. This approach was introduced by Thomas & Grunkemeier (1975 ), who estimated confidence intervals of survival probabilities based on right censored data. The method is appealing for several reasons: it always produces intervals inside [0, 1], it does not involve variance estimation, and can produce asymmetric intervals. Asymptotic results for the confidence intervals and bands are obtained, as well as simulation results, in which the performance of the likelihood ratio intervals and bands is compared with that of the normal approximation method. We also propose a bandwidth selection procedure based on the bootstrap and apply the technique on a real data set.  相似文献

Based on progressively Type II censored samples, we consider the estimation of R = P(Y < X) when X and Y are two independent Weibull distributions with different shape parameters, but having the same scale parameter. The maximum likelihood estimator, approximate maximum likelihood estimator, and Bayes estimator of R are obtained. Based on the asymptotic distribution of R, the confidence interval of R are obtained. Two bootstrap confidence intervals are also proposed. Analysis of a real data set is given for illustrative purposes. Monte Carlo simulations are also performed to compare the different proposed methods.  相似文献

Abstract.  The likelihood ratio statistic for testing pointwise hypotheses about the survival time distribution in the current status model can be inverted to yield confidence intervals (CIs). One advantage of this procedure is that CIs can be formed without estimating the unknown parameters that figure in the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the distribution function. We discuss the likelihood ratio-based CIs for the distribution function and the quantile function and compare these intervals to several different intervals based on the MLE. The quantiles of the limiting distribution of the MLE are estimated using various methods including parametric fitting, kernel smoothing and subsampling techniques. Comparisons are carried out both for simulated data and on a data set involving time to immunization against rubella. The comparisons indicate that the likelihood ratio-based intervals are preferable from several perspectives.  相似文献

Comparative lifetime experiments are important when the object of a study is to determine the relative merits of two competing duration of life products. This study considers the interval estimation for two Weibull populations when joint Type-II progressive censoring is implemented. We obtain the conditional maximum likelihood estimators of the two Weibull parameters under this scheme. Moreover, simultaneous approximate confidence region based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators are also discussed and compared with two Bootstrap confidence regions. We consider the behavior of probability of failure structure with different schemes. A simulation study is performed and an illustrative example is also given.  相似文献

In this article, we develop exact inference for two populations that have a two-parameter exponential distribution with the same location parameter and different scale parameters when Type-II censoring is implemented on the two samples in a combined manner. We obtain the conditional maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of the three parameters. We then derive the exact distributions of these MLEs along with their moment generating functions. Based on general entropy loss function, Bayesian study about the parameters is presented. Finally, some simulation results and an illustrative example are presented to illustrate the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

The easily computed, one-sided confidence interval for the binomial parameter provides the basis for an interesting classroom example of scientific thinking and its relationship to confidence intervals. The upper limit can be represented as the sample proportion from a number of “successes” in a future experiment of the same sample size. The upper limit reported by most people corresponds closely to that producing a 95 percent classical confidence interval and has a Bayesian interpretation.  相似文献

Exact nonparametric inference based on ordinary Type-II right censored samples has been extended here to the situation when there are multiple samples with Type-II censoring from a common continuous distribution. It is shown that marginally, the order statistics from the pooled sample are mixtures of the usual order statistics with multivariate hypergeometric weights. Relevant formulas are then derived for the construction of nonparametric confidence intervals for population quantiles, prediction intervals, and tolerance intervals in terms of these pooled order statistics. It is also shown that this pooled-sample approach assists in achieving higher confidence levels when estimating large quantiles as compared to a single Type-II censored sample with same number of observations from a sample of comparable size. We also present some examples to illustrate all the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

Epstein (1954) introduced the Type-I hybrid censoring scheme as a mixture of Type-I and Type-II censoring schemes. Childs et al. (2003) introduced the Type-II hybrid censoring scheme as an alternative to Type-I hybrid censoring scheme, and provided the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of the mean of a one-parameter exponential distribution based on Type-II hybrid censored samples. The associated confidence interval also has been provided. The main aim of this paper is to consider a two-parameter exponential distribution, and to derive the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters based on Type-II hybrid censored samples. The marginal distributions and the exact confidence intervals are also provided. The results can be used to derive the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of the percentile point, and to construct the associated confidence interval. Different methods are compared using extensive simulations and one data analysis has been performed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Following the work of Chen and Bhattacharyya [Exact confidence bounds for an exponential parameter under hybrid censoring. Comm Statist Theory Methods. 1988;17:1857–1870], several results have been developed regarding the exact likelihood inference of exponential parameters based on different forms of censored samples. In this paper, the conditional maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of two exponential mean parameters are derived under joint generalized Type-I hybrid censoring on the two samples. The moment generating functions (MGFs) and the exact densities of the conditional MLEs are obtained, using which exact confidence intervals are then developed for the model parameters. We also derive the means, variances, and mean squared errors of these estimates. An efficient computational method is developed based on the joint MGF. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

The power-law process (PLP) is a two-parameter model widely used for modeling repairable system reliability. Results on exact point estimation for both parameters as well as exact interval estimation for the shape parameter are well known. In this paper, we investigate the interval estimation for the scale parameter. Asymptotic confidence intervals are derived using Fisher information matrix and theoretical results by Cocozza-Thivent (1997 Cocozza-Thivent , C. ( 1997 ). Processus Stochastiques et Fiabilité des Systèmes . Berlin : Springer-Verlag . [Google Scholar]). The accuracy of the interval estimation for finite samples is studied by simulation methods.  相似文献
