The authors show how saddlepoint techniques lead to highly accurate approximations for Bayesian predictive densities and cumulative distribution functions in stochastic model settings where the prior is tractable, but not necessarily the likelihood or the predictand distribution. They consider more specifically models involving predictions associated with waiting times for semi‐Markov processes whose distributions are indexed by an unknown parameter θ. Bayesian prediction for such processes when they are not stationary is also addressed and the inverse‐Gaussian based saddlepoint approximation of Wood, Booth & Butler (1993) is shown to accurately deal with the nonstationarity whereas the normal‐based Lugannani & Rice (1980) approximation cannot, Their methods are illustrated by predicting various waiting times associated with M/M/q and M/G/1 queues. They also discuss modifications to the matrix renewal theory needed for computing the moment generating functions that are used in the saddlepoint methods.  相似文献

Markov Beta and Gamma Processes for Modelling Hazard Rates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper generalizes the discrete time independent increment beta process of Hjort (1990 ), for modelling discrete failure times, and also generalizes the independent gamma process for modelling piecewise constant hazard rates ( Walker and Mallick, 1997 ). The generalizations are from independent increment to Markov increment prior processes allowing the modelling of smoothness. We derive posterior distributions and undertake a full Bayesian analysis.  相似文献

Survival data with one intermediate state are described by semi-Markov and Markov models for counting processes whose intensities are defined in terms of two stopping times T 1< T 2. Problems of goodness-of-fit for these models are studied. The test statistics are proposed by comparing Nelson–Aalen estimators for data stratified according to T 1. Asymptotic distributions of these statistics are established in terms of the weak convergence of some random fields. Asymptotic consistency of these test statistics is also established. Simulation studies are included to indicate their numerical performance.  相似文献

The computational demand required to perform inference using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods often obstructs a Bayesian analysis. This may be a result of large datasets, complex dependence structures, or expensive computer models. In these instances, the posterior distribution is replaced by a computationally tractable approximation, and inference is based on this working model. However, the error that is introduced by this practice is not well studied. In this paper, we propose a methodology that allows one to examine the impact on statistical inference by quantifying the discrepancy between the intractable and working posterior distributions. This work provides a structure to analyse model approximations with regard to the reliability of inference and computational efficiency. We illustrate our approach through a spatial analysis of yearly total precipitation anomalies where covariance tapering approximations are used to alleviate the computational demand associated with inverting a large, dense covariance matrix.  相似文献

This paper describes the modelling and fitting of Gaussian Markov random field spatial components within a Generalized AdditiveModel for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) model. This allows modelling of any or all the parameters of the distribution for the response variable using explanatory variables and spatial effects. The response variable distribution is allowed to be a non-exponential family distribution. A new package developed in R to achieve this is presented. We use Gaussian Markov random fields to model the spatial effect in Munich rent data and explore some features and characteristics of the data. The potential of using spatial analysis within GAMLSS is discussed. We argue that the flexibility of parametric distributions, ability to model all the parameters of the distribution and diagnostic tools of GAMLSS provide an ideal environment for modelling spatial features of data.  相似文献

Motivated by applications in call center management, we propose a framework based on empirical process techniques for inference about waiting time and patience distributions in multiserver queues with abandonment. The framework rigorises heuristics based on survival analysis of independent and identically distributed observations by allowing correlated waiting times. Assuming a regenerative structure of offered waiting times, we establish asymptotic properties of estimators of limiting distribution functions and derived functionals. We discuss construction of bootstrap confidence intervals and statistical tests, including a simple bootstrap two-sample test for comparing patience distributions. A small simulation study and a real data example are presented.  相似文献

We present a simulation methodology for Bayesian estimation of rate parameters in Markov jump processes arising for example in stochastic kinetic models. To handle the problem of missing components and measurement errors in observed data, we embed the Markov jump process into the framework of a general state space model. We do not use diffusion approximations. Markov chain Monte Carlo and particle filter type algorithms are introduced which allow sampling from the posterior distribution of the rate parameters and the Markov jump process also in data-poor scenarios. The algorithms are illustrated by applying them to rate estimation in a model for prokaryotic auto-regulation and the stochastic Oregonator, respectively.  相似文献

This paper considers subexponential asymptotics of the tail distributions of waiting times in stationary work-conserving single-server queues with multiple Markovian arrival streams, where all arrival streams are modulated by the underlying Markov chain with finite states and service time distributions may differ for different arrival streams. Under the assumption that the equilibrium distribution of the overall (i.e., customer-average) service time distribution is subexponential, a subexponential asymptotic formula is first shown for the virtual waiting time distribution, using a closed formula recently found by the author. Further when customers are served on a FIFO basis, the actual waiting time and sojourn time distributions of customers from respective arrival streams are shown to have the same asymptotics as the virtual waiting time distribution.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we study the total workload process and waiting times in a queueing system with multiple types of customers and a first-come-first-served service discipline. An M/G/1 type Markov chain, which is closely related to the total workload in the queueing system, is constructed. A method is developed for computing the steady state distribution of that Markov chain. Using that steady state distribution, the distributions of total workload, batch waiting times, and waiting times of individual types of customers are obtained. Compared to the GI/M/1 and QBD approaches for waiting times and sojourn times in discrete time queues, the dimension of the matrix blocks involved in the M/G/1 approach can be significantly smaller.  相似文献

Summary.  Gaussian Markov random-field (GMRF) models are frequently used in a wide variety of applications. In most cases parts of the GMRF are observed through mutually independent data; hence the full conditional of the GMRF, a hidden GMRF (HGMRF), is of interest. We are concerned with the case where the likelihood is non-Gaussian, leading to non-Gaussian HGMRF models. Several researchers have constructed block sampling Markov chain Monte Carlo schemes based on approximations of the HGMRF by a GMRF, using a second-order expansion of the log-density at or near the mode. This is possible as the GMRF approximation can be sampled exactly with a known normalizing constant. The Markov property of the GMRF approximation yields computational efficiency. The main contribution in the paper is to go beyond the GMRF approximation and to construct a class of non-Gaussian approximations which adapt automatically to the particular HGMRF that is under study. The accuracy can be tuned by intuitive parameters to nearly any precision. These non-Gaussian approximations share the same computational complexity as those which are based on GMRFs and can be sampled exactly with computable normalizing constants. We apply our approximations in spatial disease mapping and model-based geostatistical models with different likelihoods, obtain procedures for block updating and construct Metropolized independence samplers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Recently, the Bayesian nonparametric approaches in survival studies attract much more attentions. Because of multimodality in survival data, the mixture models are very common. We introduce a Bayesian nonparametric mixture model with Burr distribution (Burr type XII) as the kernel. Since the Burr distribution shares good properties of common distributions on survival analysis, it has more flexibility than other distributions. By applying this model to simulated and real failure time datasets, we show the preference of this model and compare it with Dirichlet process mixture models with different kernels. The Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation methods to calculate the posterior distribution are used.  相似文献

Inference for semi-Markov models under panel data presents considerable computational difficulties. In general the likelihood is intractable, but a tractable likelihood with the form of a hidden Markov model can be obtained if the sojourn times in each of the states are assumed to have phase-type distributions. However, using phase-type distributions directly may be undesirable as they require estimation of parameters which may be poorly identified. In this article, an approach to fitting semi-Markov models with standard parametric sojourn distributions is developed. The method involves establishing a family of Coxian phase-type distribution approximations to the parametric distribution and merging approximations for different states to obtain an approximate semi-Markov process with a tractable likelihood. Approximations are developed for Weibull and Gamma distributions and demonstrated on data relating to post-lung-transplantation patients.  相似文献

In this paper we present Bayesian analysis of finite mixtures of multivariate Poisson distributions with an unknown number of components. The multivariate Poisson distribution can be regarded as the discrete counterpart of the multivariate normal distribution, which is suitable for modelling multivariate count data. Mixtures of multivariate Poisson distributions allow for overdispersion and for negative correlations between variables. To perform Bayesian analysis of these models we adopt a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm with birth and death moves for updating the number of components. We present results obtained from applying our modelling approach to simulated and real data. Furthermore, we apply our approach to a problem in multivariate disease mapping, namely joint modelling of diseases with correlated counts.  相似文献

Even though integer-valued time series are common in practice, the methods for their analysis have been developed only in recent past. Several models for stationary processes with discrete marginal distributions have been proposed in the literature. Such processes assume the parameters of the model to remain constant throughout the time period. However, this need not be true in practice. In this paper, we introduce non-stationary integer-valued autoregressive (INAR) models with structural breaks to model a situation, where the parameters of the INAR process do not remain constant over time. Such models are useful while modelling count data time series with structural breaks. The Bayesian and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedures for the estimation of the parameters and break points of such models are discussed. We illustrate the model and estimation procedure with the help of a simulation study. The proposed model is applied to the two real biometrical data sets.  相似文献

Summary.  Structured additive regression models are perhaps the most commonly used class of models in statistical applications. It includes, among others, (generalized) linear models, (generalized) additive models, smoothing spline models, state space models, semiparametric regression, spatial and spatiotemporal models, log-Gaussian Cox processes and geostatistical and geoadditive models. We consider approximate Bayesian inference in a popular subset of structured additive regression models, latent Gaussian models , where the latent field is Gaussian, controlled by a few hyperparameters and with non-Gaussian response variables. The posterior marginals are not available in closed form owing to the non-Gaussian response variables. For such models, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods can be implemented, but they are not without problems, in terms of both convergence and computational time. In some practical applications, the extent of these problems is such that Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling is simply not an appropriate tool for routine analysis. We show that, by using an integrated nested Laplace approximation and its simplified version, we can directly compute very accurate approximations to the posterior marginals. The main benefit of these approximations is computational: where Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms need hours or days to run, our approximations provide more precise estimates in seconds or minutes. Another advantage with our approach is its generality, which makes it possible to perform Bayesian analysis in an automatic, streamlined way, and to compute model comparison criteria and various predictive measures so that models can be compared and the model under study can be challenged.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We consider a class of single server queueing systems in which customers arrive singly and service is provided in batches, depending on the number of customers waiting when the server becomes free. Service is independent of the batch size. This system could also be considered as a batch service queue in which a server visits the queue at arbitrary times and collects a batch of waiting customers for service, or waits for a customer to arrive if there are no waiting customers. A waiting server immediately collects and processes the first arriving customer. The system is considered in discrete time. The interarrival times of customers and the inter-visit times of the server, which we call the service time, have general distributions and are represented as remaining time Markov chains. We analyze this system using the matrix-geometric method and show that the resulting R matrix can be determined explicitly in some special cases and the stationary distributions are known semi-explicitly in some other special cases.  相似文献

Abstract.  The Nelson–Aalen estimator is well known to be an asymptotically efficient estimator of the cumulative hazard function, see Andersen et al. ( Statistical models based on counting processes , Springer-Verlag, New York, 1993) among many others. In this paper, we show that the efficiency of the Nelson–Aalen estimator can be considerably improved by using more information in the estimation process than the traditional Nelson–Aalen estimator uses. While our approach results in a biased estimator, the variance improvement is substantial. By optimizing the balance between the bias loss and the variance improvement, we obtain results on the efficiency gain. Several examples for known failure time distributions are used to illustrate these ideas.  相似文献

Non-Gaussian processes of Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) type offer the possibility of capturing important distributional deviations from Gaussianity and for flexible modelling of dependence structures. This paper develops this potential, drawing on and extending powerful results from probability theory for applications in statistical analysis. Their power is illustrated by a sustained application of OU processes within the context of finance and econometrics. We construct continuous time stochastic volatility models for financial assets where the volatility processes are superpositions of positive OU processes, and we study these models in relation to financial data and theory.  相似文献
