I had my most delicious meal with noodles in a small village along the Yellow River. It was on a March day a decade ago, when I had just moved to Shanxi Province. I was out in the field as a reporter, and was exhausted and starving after traveling more than 50 kilometers on foot and by bus. A middle-aged man, whom I did not know, was standing in front of his dugout cave, the traditional dwelling of the Shanxi people." He called to me and invited me to have a meal in his home. Upon entering the cave, I was asked to sit on a kang, a brick bed, while the man's wife busied herself with cooking my meal. In no time a huge bowl of youpomian, noodles with Chinese prickly ash oil, was on the table in front of me. My nostrils were immediately filled with the strong and delicious smell of chili and prickly ash.  相似文献

Does raising non-adult children facilitate or restrict access to social capital as network resources? Using data from a national sample of adults in the United States, I do not find evidence for the direct effect of parenthood on the three dimensions of social capital (diversity, extensity, and quality), but instead I find evidence for its interaction effects on the quality of social capital. There is marginal evidence that parenthood status is associated with the quality of social capital positively for men but negatively for women. There is evidence that parenthood status is associated with the quality of social capital positively for the married but negatively for the unmarried. Also parenthood status is associated with the quality of social capital negatively for unmarried women but positively for the other three gender-marital groups, in particular unmarried men. These findings suggest the structural interplay of parenthood status with gender and marital status, and indicate the motherhood penalty, the fatherhood premium, the single-parenthood penalty, the married-parenthood premium, and the single-motherhood penalty in reaching higher-quality, rather than more diverse and extensive, social capital.  相似文献

This article concerns the use of visual paratexts in seventeenth-century Ukraine, and of illustrated title pages in particular. The books under analysis represent three crucial monuments of seventeenth-century Ukrainian sacred oratory. These are: Lazar Baranovych’s Truby sloves propovidnykh na narochityia dni prazdnikov (Kyiv, 1674), and Antonii Radyvylovs'kyi’s Ohorodok Marii Bohorodytsy (Kyiv, 1676) and his Vinets Khrystov z propovidii nedelnykh (Kyiv, 1688). The author concentrates on the “cognitive” aspect of their titular pages, dealing with them as a rhetorical process that emphasizes meditation, invention, and memory. More specifically, she investigates the correlation between the visual and the written as a specific literary-figurative “mode of thought” that stands in a long Christian tradition of expounding images as meditational tools. She shows how Baranovych and Radyvylovs'kyi interact with this tradition, arguing that their title pages provide readers-viewers with both a machina meditativa, a meditative apparatus for reflecting upon the mystery of the Incarnation, and a machina rhetorica, a repertory of images that the users of the books, often themselves preachers, could use to compose new texts.  相似文献

WHEN she graduated from the Beijing Broadcasting Institute, Zhang Xu was a fan of television dramas. Less than two years after her graduation, she had adapted and directed "Lost in the Trees," a TV serial about youth filmed on Hainan Island. Her impulsiveness and determination sustained her through the struggle of filming in the tropical forests, as well as the laborious editing process. Little did she know that her next project would turn into an adventure more thrilling than any TV drama.  相似文献

Through the lens of the communicative institutionalism and an extensive content analysis of corporate websites, this study compared corporate social responsibility (CSR) institutional messages by firms across three macro regions. The findings show that Asian firms do not present significant differences in how they expose their orientation to sustainability (i.e. “CSR identity” messages) than Western counterparts. However, Asian firms seem significantly less inclined to engage in CSR messages concerning “organization and management”, messages on “CSR interactivity” and those regarding “CSR as business case” compared with European firms. The difference between Asian and North American firms mostly concerns the former’s less salient use of “business case” messages for CSR. The comparative study sheds light on the pattern of CSR crossvergence across the West and East, reflecting hybridized CSR expressions across forms of CSR institutional messages.  相似文献

FOR the past two hundred years, a 20-volume poem has been recited to the accompaniment of a stringed musical instrument. This folk art form called tanci is popular in China's Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. This huge literary work, Twice Destined in Marriage, was written by Chen Duansheng, a woman poet who lived during Emperor Qian Long's reign (1736-1795) in the Qing Dynasty. Chen Duansheng, also called Chun Tian, was born in Hangzhou in 1751, the eldest of three daughters. In addition to Twice Destined in Marriage, she wrote many other poems which were included in her own Collection of Poems Written in Huiyingge. Unfortunately this collection no longer exists  相似文献
