In this paper, we present two new estimators for the entropy of absolutely continuous random variables and consider some of their properties. Consistency of the first estimator is shown by Monte Carlo method, and the consistency of the second estimator is proved theoretically. Using these estimators, two new tests for normality are presented and their powers are compared with the other entropy-based tests. Simulation results show that the proposed estimators and test statistics perform very well. Finally, a real example is presented and analysed.  相似文献

Finite sample properties of estimators for the parameters of a dependent Bernoulli process are investigated using Monte Carlo techniques. A ratio estimator is proposed for the dependence parameter of the model and is compared to the approximate maximum likelihood estimator given by Klotz. It is shown that both estimators have a downward bias that is extreme in certain cases and that samples well in excess of 200 may be necessary before the asymptotic theory can be applied.  相似文献

A componentwise B-spline method is proposed for estimating the unknown functions in the varying-coefficient models with longitudinal data. Different amounts of smoothing are used for different individual coefficient functions and the estimators of different coefficient functions are obtained by different minimization operations. The local asymptotic bias and variance of the estimators are derived. It is shown that our estimators achieve the local and global optimal convergence rates even if the coefficient functions belong to different smoothness families. The asymptotic distributions of the estimators are also established and are used to construct approximate pointwise confidence intervals for coefficient functions. Finite sample properties of our procedures are studied through Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

Estimation of the population mean under the regression model with random components is considered. Conditions under which the random components regression estimator is design consistent are given. It is shown that consistency holds when incorrect values are used for the variance components. The regression estimator constructed with model parameters that differ considerably from the true parameters performed well in a Monte Carlo study. Variance estimators for the regression predictor are suggested. A variance estimator appropriate for estimators constructed with a biased estimator for the between-group variance component performed well in the Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new class of efficient and debiased two-step shrinkage estimators for a linear regression model in the presence of multicollinearity. We derive the proposed estimators’ mean square error and define the necessary and sufficient conditions for superiority over the existing estimators. In addition, we develop an algorithm for selecting the shrinkage parameters for the proposed estimators. The comparison of the new estimators versus the traditional ordinary least squares, ridge regression, Liu, and the two-parameter estimators is done by a matrix mean square error criterion. The Monte Carlo simulation results show the superiority of the proposed estimators under certain conditions. In the presence of high but imperfect multicollinearity, the two-step shrinkage estimators’ performance is relatively better. Finally, two real-world chemical data are analyzed to demonstrate the advantages and the empirical relevance of our newly proposed estimators. It is shown that the standard errors and the estimated mean square error decrease substantially for the proposed estimator. Hence, the precision of the estimated parameters is increased, which of course is one of the main objectives of the practitioners.KEYWORDS: Debiased estimator, Monte Carlo simulations, multicollinearity, two-parameter estimator, ridge regression, chemical structures  相似文献

A new method for estimating a set of odds ratios under an order restriction based on estimating equations is proposed. The method is applied to those of the conditional maximum likelihood estimators and the Mantel-Haenszel estimators. The estimators derived from the conditional likelihood estimating equations are shown to maximize the conditional likelihoods. It is also seen that the restricted estimators converge almost surely to the respective odds ratios when the respective sample sizes become large regularly. The restricted estimators are compared with the unrestricted maximum likelihood estimators by a Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation studies show that the restricted estimates improve the mean squared errors remarkably, while the Mantel-Haenszel type estimates are competitive with the conditional maximum likelihood estimates, being slightly worse.  相似文献

We consider a replicated ultrastructural measurement error regression model where predictor variables are observed with error. It is assumed that some prior information regarding the regression coefficients is available in the form of exact linear restrictions. Three classes of estimators of regression coefficients are proposed. These estimators are shown to be consistent as well as satisfying the given restrictions. The asymptotic properties of unrestricted as well as restricted estimators are studied without imposing any distributional assumption on any random component of the model. A Monte Carlo simulations study is performed to assess the effect of sample size, replicates and non-normality on the estimators.  相似文献

The problem of pooling means is considered based on two samples in presence of the uncertain prior information that these samples are taken from possibly identical populations. Two discrete models, Poisson and binomial are considered in particular. Three estimators, i.e. the unrestricted estimator, shrinkage restricted estimator and estimators based on preliminary test are proposed. Their asymptotic mean squared errors are derived and compared. It is demonstrated via asymptotic results that the range of the parameter space in which shrinkage preliminary test estimator dominates the unrestricted estimator is wider than that of the usual preliminary test estimator. A Monte Carlo study for Poisson model is presented to compare the performance of the estimators for small samples.  相似文献

Random coefficient regression models have been used to analyze cross-sectional and longitudinal data in economics and growth-curve data from biological and agricultural experiments. In the literature several estimators, including the ordinary least squares and the estimated generalized least squares (EGLS), have been considered for estimating the parameters of the mean model. Based on the asymptotic properties of the EGLS estimators, test statistics have been proposed for testing linear hypotheses involving the parameters of the mean model. An alternative estimator, the simple mean of the individual regression coefficients, provides estimation and hypothesis-testing procedures that are simple to compute and teach. The large sample properties of this simple estimator are shown to be similar to that of the EGLS estimator. The performance of the proposed estimator is compared with that of the existing estimators by Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

Smoothed ranks are proposed for two or multi-sample location problems. The regular ranks in Wilcoxon's two sample test are replaced with smoothed ranks, and the shift parameter is estimated. Asymptotic properties of the smoothed rank estimator are shown and a hypothesis test is proposed. Moreover, the smoothed ranks are applied in the Kruskal–Wallis's r-sample test and the power of the test is computed using regular and smoothed ranks. Examples and Monte Carlo simulations show that the smoothed ranks perform similarly to the traditional rank based estimators under contaminated normal or non-normal populations.  相似文献

Recently, Lad, Sanfilippo, and Agro [(2015), ‘Extropy: Complementary Dual of Entropy’, Statistical Science, 30, 40–58.] showed the measure of entropy has a complementary dual, which is termed extropy. The present article introduces some estimators of the extropy of a continuous random variable. Properties of the proposed estimators are stated, and comparisons are made with Qiu and Jia’s estimators [(2018a), ‘Extropy Estimators with Applications in Testing uniformity’, Journal of Nonparametric Statistics, 30, 182–196]. The results indicate that the proposed estimators have a smaller mean squared error than competing estimators. A real example is presented and analysed.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a computationally efficient algorithm to estimate the parameters of a 2-D sinusoidal model in the presence of stationary noise. The estimators obtained by the proposed algorithm are consistent and asymptotically equivalent to the least squares estimators. Monte Carlo simulations are performed for different sample sizes and it is observed that the performances of the proposed method are quite satisfactory and they are equivalent to the least squares estimators. The main advantage of the proposed method is that the estimators can be obtained using only finite number of iterations. In fact it is shown that starting from the average of periodogram estimators, the proposed algorithm converges in three steps only. One synthesized texture data and one original texture data have been analyzed using the proposed algorithm for illustrative purpose.  相似文献

The maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches have been considered for the two-parameter generalized exponential distribution based on record values with the number of trials following the record values (inter-record times). The maximum likelihood estimates are obtained under the inverse sampling and the random sampling schemes. It is shown that the maximum likelihood estimator of the shape parameter converges in mean square to the true value when the scale parameter is known. The Bayes estimates of the parameters have been developed by using Lindley's approximation and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods due to the lack of explicit forms under the squared error and the linear-exponential loss functions. The confidence intervals for the parameters are constructed based on asymptotic and Bayesian methods. The Bayes and the maximum likelihood estimators are compared in terms of the estimated risk by the Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison of the estimators based on the record values and the record values with their corresponding inter-record times are performed by using Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

Kundu and Gupta [Analysis of hybrid life-tests in presence of competing risks. Metrica. 2007;65:159–170] provided the analysis of Type-I hybrid censored competing risks data, when the lifetime distributions of the competing cause of failures follows exponential distribution. In this paper, we consider the analysis of Type-II hybrid censored competing risks data. It is assumed that latent lifetime distributions of the competing causes of failures follow independent exponential distributions with different scale parameters. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters do not always exist. We propose the modified estimators of the scale parameters, which coincide with the corresponding maximum likelihood estimators when they exist, and asymptotically they are equivalent. We obtain the exact distribution of the proposed estimators. Using the exact distributions of the proposed estimators, associated confidence intervals are obtained. The asymptotic and bootstrap confidence intervals of the unknown parameters are also provided. Further, Bayesian inference of some unknown parametric functions under a very flexible Beta-Gamma prior is considered. Bayes estimators and associated credible intervals of the unknown parameters are obtained using the Monte Carlo method. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are performed to see the effectiveness of the proposed estimators and one real data set has been analysed for the illustrative purposes. It is observed that the proposed model and the method work quite well for this data set.  相似文献

To compare two samples under Type I censorship, this article proposes a method of semiparametric inference for the two-sample location-scale problem when the model for two samples is characterized by an unknown distribution and two unknown parameters. Simultaneous estimators for both the location shift and scale change parameters are given. It is shown that the two estimators are strongly consistent and asymptotically normal. The approach in this article can also be used for scale-shape models. Monte Carlo studies indicate that the proposed estimation procedure performs well in finite and heavily censored samples, maintains high relative efficiencies for a wide range of censoring proportions and is robust to the model misspecification, and also outperforms other competitive estimators.  相似文献

the estimation of variance components of heteroscedastic random model is discussed in this paper. Maximum Likelihood (ML) is described for one-way heteroscedastic random models. The proportionality condition that cell variance is proportional to the cell sample size, is used to eliminate the efffect of heteroscedasticity. The algebraic expressions of the estimators are obtained for the model. It is seen that the algebraic expressions of the estimators depend mainly on the inverse of the variance-covariance matrix of the observation vector. So, the variance-covariance matrix is obtained and the formulae for the inversions are given. A Monte Carlo study is conducted. Five different variance patterns with different numbers of cells are considered in this study. For each variance pattern, 1000 Monte Carlo samples are drawn. Then the Monte Carlo biases and Monte Carlo MSE’s of the estimators of variance components are calculated. In respect of both bias and MSE, the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimators of variance components are found to be sufficiently good.  相似文献

To model growth curves in survival analysis and biological studies the logistic distribution has been widely used. In this article, we propose a goodness-of-fit test for the logistic distribution based on an estimate of the Gini index. The exact distribution of the proposed test statistic and also its asymptotic distribution are presented. In order to compute the proposed test statistic, parameters of the logistic distribution are estimated by approximate maximum likelihood estimators (AMLEs), which are simple explicit estimators. Through Monte Carlo simulations, power comparisons of the proposed test with some known competing tests are carried. Finally, an illustrative example is presented and analyzed.  相似文献

A new general method of combining estimators is proposed in order to obtain an estimator with “improved” small sample properties. It is based on a specification test statistic and incorporates some well-known methods like preliminary testing. It is used to derive an alternative estimator for the slope in the simple errors-in-variables model, combining OLS and the modified instrumental variable estimator by Fuller. Small sample properties of the new estimator are investigated by means of a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

In this paper, a robust extreme ranked set sampling (RERSS) procedure for estimating the population mean is introduced. It is shown that the proposed method gives an unbiased estimator with smaller variance, provided the underlying distribution is symmetric. However, for asymmetric distributions a weighted mean is given, where the optimal weights are computed by using Shannon's entropy. The performance of the population mean estimator is discussed along with its properties. Monte Carlo simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of the RERSS estimator relative to the simple random sample (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS) and extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) estimators. The results indicate that the proposed estimator is more efficient than the estimators based on the traditional sampling methods.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a method of averaging generalized least squares estimators for linear regression models with heteroskedastic errors. The averaging weights are chosen to minimize Mallows’ Cp-like criterion. We show that the weight vector selected by our method is optimal. It is also shown that this optimality holds even when the variances of the error terms are estimated and the feasible generalized least squares estimators are averaged. The variances can be estimated parametrically or nonparametrically. Monte Carlo simulation results are encouraging. An empirical example illustrates that the proposed method is useful for predicting a measure of firms’ performance.  相似文献
