IN Guangzhou, where restaurants are plentiful and food from many places is served, the baozai meal, a kind of traditional Chinese fast food, has retained its place in the hearts of Guangzhou's caterers. The history of the baozai meal starts at least from the beginning of this century. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Guangzhou was the largest trading port in south China with a developed, commodities-based economy. There were many dockworkers and porters living in the city at the time. They worked very hard and were often too busy to eat their meals at home. This ivory tablet was carved in 1741 by Chen Zuzhang and four other handicraftsmen, based on a picture drawn by Chen Mei, a painter from the lmperial Art Academy of the Qing Dynasty. They spent 100 days to finish the work. Altogether, there are 12 parts, with each part having one side carved with a scene and the other side with a poem by Emperor Qianlong. Lacquerware has a long history in China. A lacquered wooden bowl unearthed at Hemudu, Zhejiang Province, proved that lacquerware was produced in China at least 7,000 years ago. Some of the finest examples of ancient lacquerware were discovered from 1972-74 in the Han tombs at Mawangdui, Changsha. Some are so well preserved they look new. More than 1,000 pieces were unearthed, including utensils for daily use, coffins, weapons racks and screens. This bottle, at 51.5 centimeters high and 18.1 centimeters in diameter, is so far the best-preserved and the largest lacquer bottle found in China. It was used to  相似文献
