In a recent volume of this journal, Holden [Testing the normality assumption in the Tobit Model, J. Appl. Stat. 31 (2004) pp. 521–532] presents Monte Carlo evidence comparing several tests for departures from normality in the Tobit Model. This study adds to the work of Holden by considering another test, and several information criteria, for detecting departures from normality in the Tobit Model. The test given here is a modified likelihood ratio statistic based on a partially adaptive estimator of the Censored Regression Model using the approach of Caudill [A partially adaptive estimator for the Censored Regression Model based on a mixture of normal distributions, Working Paper, Department of Economics, Auburn University, 2007]. The information criteria examined include the Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC), the Consistent AIC (CAIC), the Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and the Akaike’s BIC (ABIC). In terms of fewest ‘rejections’ of a true null, the best performance is exhibited by the CAIC and the BIC, although, like some of the statistics examined by Holden, there are computational difficulties with each.  相似文献

We consider a two-component location mixture model with symmetric components, one of which is assumed to be known, the other is unknown. We show identifiability under assumptions on the tails of the characteristic function for the true underlying mixture, and also construct asymptotically normal estimates. The model is an extension of the contamination model in Bordes et al. [Semiparametric estimation of a two-component mixture model when a component is known, Scand. J. Statist. 33 (2006), pp. 733–752], and also related to a location mixture of one symmetric density as in Bordes et al. [Semiparametric estimation of a two component mixture model, Ann. Statist. 34 (2006), pp. 1204–1232]. We show by simulation that estimating the additional location parameter leads to a slight loss of efficiency as compared with the contamination model.  相似文献

Binary choice models that contain endogenous regressors can now be estimated routinely using modern software. Each of the two packages, Stata 11 [Stata Statistical Software: Release 11, StataCorp LP, College Station, TX, 2009] and Limdep 9 [Econometric Software Inc., Plainview, NY, 2008], contains two estimators that can be used to estimate such a model. This paper compares the performance of maximum likelihood, Newey's Amemiya's generalized least-squares (AGLS) estimator, an instrumental variables plug-in estimator and others in samples of sizes 200 and 1000 using simulation. Specifically, this paper focuses on tests of parameter significance under various degrees of instrument strength and severity of endogeneity. Although the maximum-likelihood estimator performs well in large samples, there is some evidence that the more computationally robust AGLS estimator may perform better in smaller samples when instruments are weak. It also appears that instruments in endogenous probit estimation need to be even stronger than when used in linear instrumental variables (IV) estimation.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the work of Gjestvang and Singh [A new randomized response model, J. R. Statist. Soc. Ser. B (Methodological) 68 (2006), pp. 523–530] to propose a new unrelated question randomized response model that can be used for any sampling scheme. The interesting thing is that the estimator based on one sample is free from the use of known proportion of an unrelated character, unlike Horvitz et al. [The unrelated question randomized response model, Social Statistics Section, Proceedings of the American Statistical Association, 1967, pp. 65–72], Greenberg et al. [The unrelated question randomized response model: Theoretical framework, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 64 (1969), pp. 520–539] and Mangat et al. [An improved unrelated question randomized response strategy, Calcutta Statist. Assoc. Bull. 42 (1992), pp. 167–168] models. The relative efficiency of the proposed model with respect to the existing competitors has been studied.  相似文献

Abstract A model is introduced here for multivariate failure time data arising from heterogenous populations. In particular, we consider a situation in which the failure times of individual subjects are often temporally clustered, so that many failures occur during a relatively short age interval. The clustering is modelled by assuming that the subjects can be divided into ‘internally homogenous’ latent classes, each such class being then described by a time‐dependent frailty profile function. As an example, we reanalysed the dental caries data presented earlier in Härkänen et al. [Scand. J. Statist. 27 (2000) 577], as it turned out that our earlier model could not adequately describe the observed clustering.  相似文献

Very often, in psychometric research, as in educational assessment, it is necessary to analyze item response from clustered respondents. The multiple group item response theory (IRT) model proposed by Bock and Zimowski [12] provides a useful framework for analyzing such type of data. In this model, the selected groups of respondents are of specific interest such that group-specific population distributions need to be defined. The usual assumption for parameter estimation in this model, which is that the latent traits are random variables following different symmetric normal distributions, has been questioned in many works found in the IRT literature. Furthermore, when this assumption does not hold, misleading inference can result. In this paper, we consider that the latent traits for each group follow different skew-normal distributions, under the centered parameterization. We named it skew multiple group IRT model. This modeling extends the works of Azevedo et al. [4], Bazán et al. [11] and Bock and Zimowski [12] (concerning the latent trait distribution). Our approach ensures that the model is identifiable. We propose and compare, concerning convergence issues, two Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) algorithms for parameter estimation. A simulation study was performed in order to evaluate parameter recovery for the proposed model and the selected algorithm concerning convergence issues. Results reveal that the proposed algorithm recovers properly all model parameters. Furthermore, we analyzed a real data set which presents asymmetry concerning the latent traits distribution. The results obtained by using our approach confirmed the presence of negative asymmetry for some latent trait distributions.  相似文献

This paper extends the analysis of the bivariate Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUN) Tobit model by modeling its nonlinear dependence structure through the Clayton copula. The ability to capture/model the lower tail dependence of the SUN Tobit model where some data are censored (generally, left-censored at zero) is an useful feature of the Clayton copula. We propose a modified version of the (classical) Inference Function for Margins (IFS) method by Joe and XP [H. Joe and J.J. XP, The estimation method of inference functions for margins for multivariate models, Tech. Rep. 166, Department of Statistics, University of British Columbia, 1996], which we refer to as Modified Inference Function for Margins (MIFF) method, to obtain the (point) estimates of the marginal and Clayton copula parameters. More specifically, we employ the (frequenting) data augmentation technique at the second stage of the IFS method (the first stage of the MIFF method is equivalent to the first stage of the IFS method) to generate the censored observations and then estimate the Clayton copula parameter. This process (data augmentation and copula parameter estimation) is repeated until convergence. Such modification at the second stage of the usual estimation method is justified in order to obtain continuous marginal distributions, which ensures the uniqueness of the resulting Clayton copula, as stated by Solar's [A. Solar, Fonctions de répartition à n dimensions et leurs marges, Publ. de l'Institut de Statistique de l'Université de Paris 8 (1959), pp. 229–231] theorem; and also to provide an unbiased estimate of the association parameter (the IFS method provides a biased estimate of the Clayton copula parameter in the presence of censored observations in both margins). Since the usual asymptotic approach, that is the computation of the asymptotic covariance matrix of the parameter estimates, is troublesome in this case, we also propose the use of resampling procedures (bootstrap methods, such as standard normal and percentile, by Efron and Tibshirani [B. Efron and R.J. Tibshirani, An Introduction to the Bootstrap, Chapman & Hall, New York, 1993] to obtain confidence intervals for the model parameters.  相似文献

Although most models for incomplete longitudinal data are formulated within the selection model framework, pattern-mixture models have gained considerable interest in recent years [R.J.A. Little, Pattern-mixture models for multivariate incomplete data, J. Am. Stat. Assoc. 88 (1993), pp. 125–134; R.J.A. Lrittle, A class of pattern-mixture models for normal incomplete data, Biometrika 81 (1994), pp. 471–483], since it is often argued that selection models, although many are identifiable, should be approached with caution, especially in the context of MNAR models [R.J. Glynn, N.M. Laird, and D.B. Rubin, Selection modeling versus mixture modeling with nonignorable nonresponse, in Drawing Inferences from Self-selected Samples, H. Wainer, ed., Springer-Verlag, New York, 1986, pp. 115–142]. In this paper, the focus is on several strategies to fit pattern-mixture models for non-monotone categorical outcomes. The issue of under-identification in pattern-mixture models is addressed through identifying restrictions. Attention will be given to the derivation of the marginal covariate effect in pattern-mixture models for non-monotone categorical data, which is less straightforward than in the case of linear models for continuous data. The techniques developed will be used to analyse data from a clinical study in psychiatry.  相似文献

This article investigates the confidence regions for semiparametric nonlinear reproductive dispersion models (SNRDMs), which is an extension of nonlinear regression models. Based on local linear estimate of nonparametric component and generalized profile likelihood estimate of parameter in SNRDMs, a modified geometric framework of Bates and Wattes is proposed. Within this geometric framework, we present three kinds of improved approximate confidence regions for the parameters and parameter subsets in terms of curvatures. The work extends the previous results of Hamilton et al. [in Accounting for intrinsic nonlinearity in nonlinear regression parameter inference regions, Ann. Statist. 10, pp. 386–393, 1982], Hamilton [in Confidence regions for parameter subset in nonlinear regression, Biometrika, 73, pp. 57–64, 1986], Wei [in On confidence regions of embedded models in regular parameter families (a geometric approch), Austral. In this paper, we are mainly interested in estimating the reliability R=P(X>Y) in the Marshall–Olkin extended Lomax distribution, recently proposed by Ghitany et al. [Marshall–Olkin extended Lomax distribution and its application, Commun. Statist. Theory Methods 36 (2007), pp. 1855–1866]. The model arises as a proportional odds model where the covariate effect is replaced by an additional parameter. Maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are developed and an asymptotic confidence interval for R is obtained. Extensive simulation studies are carried out to investigate the performance of these intervals. Using real data we illustrate the procedure.  相似文献

The Cox proportional frailty model with a random effect has been proposed for the analysis of right-censored data which consist of a large number of small clusters of correlated failure time observations. For right-censored data, Cai et al. [3] proposed a class of semiparametric mixed-effects models which provides useful alternatives to the Cox model. We demonstrate that the approach of Cai et al. [3] can be used to analyze clustered doubly censored data when both left- and right-censoring variables are always observed. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator are derived. A simulation study is conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed estimator.  相似文献

In this paper, semiparametric methods are applied to estimate multivariate volatility functions, using a residual approach as in [J. Fan and Q. Yao, Efficient estimation of conditional variance functions in stochastic regression, Biometrika 85 (1998), pp. 645–660; F.A. Ziegelmann, Nonparametric estimation of volatility functions: The local exponential estimator, Econometric Theory 18 (2002), pp. 985–991; F.A. Ziegelmann, A local linear least-absolute-deviations estimator of volatility, Comm. Statist. Simulation Comput. 37 (2008), pp. 1543–1564], among others. Our main goal here is two-fold: (1) describe and implement a number of semiparametric models, such as additive, single-index and (adaptive) functional-coefficient, in volatility estimation, all motivated as alternatives to deal with the curse of dimensionality present in fully nonparametric models; and (2) propose the use of a variation of the traditional cross-validation method to deal with model choice in the class of adaptive functional-coefficient models, choosing simultaneously the bandwidth, the number of covariates in the model and also the single-index smoothing variable. The modified cross-validation algorithm is able to tackle the computational burden caused by the model complexity, providing an important tool in semiparametric volatility estimation. We briefly discuss model identifiability when estimating volatility as well as nonnegativity of the resulting estimators. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations for several underlying generating models are implemented and applications to real data are provided.  相似文献

Incipient sexual isolation between two strains of D. metanogaster was tested by male choice experiments. During ten years (150 generations) one strain, named Se, was reared in a food medium containing 10--4 M sodium selenite, while the other, named Co, was kept under normal conditions. Both strains were derived from the same natural population. There was no evidence of preference for a mate of the same strain. There was an interaction between type of female and duration of time available for mating. Se males inseminated fewer females and fewer Se females were inseminated overall.  相似文献

One important component of model selection using generalized linear models (GLM) is the choice of a link function. We propose using approximate Bayes factors to assess the improvement in fit over a GLM with canonical link when a parametric link family is used. The approximate Bayes factors are calculated using the Laplace approximations given in [32], together with a reference set of prior distributions. This methodology can be used to differentiate between different parametric link families, as well as allowing one to jointly select the link family and the independent variables. This involves comparing nonnested models and so standard significance tests cannot be used. The approach also accounts explicitly for uncertainty about the link function. The methods are illustrated using parametric link families studied in [12] for two data sets involving binomial responses. This paper considers the estimation of the regression coefficients in the Cox proportional hazards model with left-truncated and interval-censored data. Using the approaches of Pan [A multiple imputation approach to Cox regression with interval-censored data, Biometrics 56 (2000), pp. 199–203] and Heller [Proportional hazards regression with interval censored data using an inverse probability weight, Lifetime Data Anal. 17 (2011), pp. 373–385], we propose two estimates of the regression coefficients. The first estimate is based on a multiple imputation methodology. The second estimate uses an inverse probability weight to select event time pairs where the ordering is unambiguous. A simulation study is conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed estimators. The proposed methods are illustrated using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) Blood Transfusion Data.  相似文献

In this paper, a discrete counterpart of the general class of continuous beta-G distributions is introduced. A discrete analog of the beta generalized exponential distribution of Barreto-Souza et al. [2], as an important special case of the proposed class, is studied. This new distribution contains some previously known discrete distributions as well as two new models. The hazard rate function of the new model can be increasing, decreasing, bathtub-shaped and upside-down bathtub. Some distributional and moment properties of the new distribution as well as its order statistics are discussed. Estimation of the parameters is illustrated using the maximum likelihood method and, finally, the model with a real data set is examined.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a hysteretic autoregressive model with GARCH specification and a skew Student's t-error distribution for financial time series. With an integrated hysteresis zone, this model allows both the conditional mean and conditional volatility switching in a regime to be delayed when the hysteresis variable lies in a hysteresis zone. We perform Bayesian estimation via an adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling scheme. The proposed Bayesian method allows simultaneous inferences for all unknown parameters, including threshold values and a delay parameter. To implement model selection, we propose a numerical approximation of the marginal likelihoods to posterior odds. The proposed methodology is illustrated using simulation studies and two major Asia stock basis series. We conduct a model comparison for variant hysteresis and threshold GARCH models based on the posterior odds ratios, finding strong evidence of the hysteretic effect and some asymmetric heavy-tailness. Versus multi-regime threshold GARCH models, this new collection of models is more suitable to describe real data sets. Finally, we employ Bayesian forecasting methods in a Value-at-Risk study of the return series.  相似文献

In this study, classical and Bayesian inference methods are introduced to analyze lifetime data sets in the presence of left censoring considering two generalizations of the Lindley distribution: a first generalization proposed by Ghitany et al. [Power Lindley distribution and associated inference, Comput. Statist. Data Anal. 64 (2013), pp. 20–33], denoted as a power Lindley distribution and a second generalization proposed by Sharma et al. [The inverse Lindley distribution: A stress–strength reliability model with application to head and neck cancer data, J. Ind. Prod. Eng. 32 (2015), pp. 162–173], denoted as an inverse Lindley distribution. In our approach, we have used a distribution obtained from these two generalizations denoted as an inverse power Lindley distribution. A numerical illustration is presented considering a dataset of thyroglobulin levels present in a group of individuals with differentiated cancer of thyroid.  相似文献

Record scheme is a method to reduce the total time on test of an experiment. In this scheme, items are sequentially observed and only values smaller than all previous ones are recorded. In some situations, when the experiments are time-consuming and sometimes the items are lost during the experiment, the record scheme dominates the usual random sample scheme [M. Doostparast and N. Balakrishnan, Optimal sample size for record data and associated cost analysis for exponential distribution, J. Statist. Comput. Simul. 80(12) (2010), pp. 1389–1401]. Estimation of the mean of an exponential distribution based on record data has been treated by Samaniego and Whitaker [On estimating population characteristics from record breaking observations I. Parametric results, Naval Res. Logist. Q. 33 (1986), pp. 531–543] and Doostparast [A note on estimation based on record data, Metrika 69 (2009), pp. 69–80]. The lognormal distribution is used in a wide range of applications when the multiplicative scale is appropriate and the log-transformation removes the skew and brings about symmetry of the data distribution [N.T. Longford, Inference with the lognormal distribution, J. Statist. Plann. Inference 139 (2009), pp. 2329–2340]. In this paper, point estimates as well as confidence intervals for the unknown parameters are obtained. This will also be addressed by the Bayesian point of view. To carry out the performance of the estimators obtained, a simulation study is conducted. For illustration proposes, a real data set, due to Lawless [Statistical Models and Methods for Lifetime Data, 2nd ed., John Wiley & Sons, New York, 2003], is analysed using the procedures obtained.  相似文献
