Romancing Singapore: When yesterday's success becomes today's challenge

When Singapore gained independence in 1965, its policies were “strongly anti-natalist” as the government feared that population growth could strain its limited resources and hinder economic development. National campaigns were successfully used for population control and within a decade birth rates fell so much that the country became a victim of its own success. Fearing a loss in replacement of the population, the government has adopted a rather aggressively “pro-natalist” policy. In addition to cash grants and tax rebates to encourage births, public-education campaigns have promoted positive attitudes towards marriage, children and family life including Romancing Singapore, a month-long campaign in February 2003.     

When community becomes an agent of educational support: communicative research on Learning Communities in Catalonia

Educational support is a key component of any inclusive school. However, many traditional forms of support have been proven ineffective and even exclusionary for the most vulnerable students and their families. This article presents the results of a study conducted over four years by a diverse research team of university professors, PhD students, teachers and head teachers of schools operating as Learning Communities in Catalonia, Spain. The communicative and dialogic approach of these schools offers an alternative understanding of educational support, which is influenced to a great extent by the creation of networks that include participation by diverse agents. The current article provides a theoretical grounding for this approach to support. The article describes the role of different agents from the community and analyses the main effects of this approach and students’ experiences. Finally, a proposal for a dialogic orientation for educational support is discussed.     

Computer systems in addiction treatment programs: Availability and implications for program evaluation

Addiction treatment programs have been slow to adopt computerized information systems. Little systematic data exist on programs' technological infrastructures and use of electronic databases to store and analyze client information. Likewise, there is little information available on counselors' access to and use of the Internet for learning about new treatment techniques. Drawing upon data obtained in 2002–2003 from nationally-representative samples of publicly- and privately-funded addiction treatment centers and their counselors, this article describes the current state of the field in terms of data system availability and Internet usage. The availability of client-level databases is variable but continues to evolve. Programs maintaining electronic client data appear to be at an advantage for implementing outcomes monitoring activities. While counselors' access to computers is high, their use of the Internet and the NIDA website is low. The implications of these findings, and directions for future research, are discussed.     

When a scratch becomes 'a scary story': the social construction of micro panics in center-based child care

This study analyzes the everyday world of center‐based child care and the climate of suspicion that permeates that world. Based on four and a half years of participant observation field research and thirty focused interviews with men and women child care workers, the author examines the existence of ‘micro panics’ which occur in child care centers when deviant labels are attached to caregiving acts or activities. Drawing from traditional Moral Panic Theory, this paper demonstrates how the context of suspicion surrounding center based child care and the ‘micro panics’ that sustain it are generated historically, structurally, and interactionally. These phenomena, in other words, are in part, a historical artifact from the 1980s moral panics concerning day care abuse, an interactional product of the gendering of child care as ‘women's work’, and a phenomenological byproduct of the positioning of paid child care in the everyday lives of workers, children, and parents.     

When food becomes a feminist issue: popular feminism and subaltern agency in the World March of Women

In ongoing contests over neoliberal globalization, feminists are increasingly forging alliances with non-feminist others around common struggles, both locally and transnationally. This is indicative of a broader shift in transnational feminist politics from intra-movement to inter-movement alliances, and maps onto a historic transition from the UN era (roughly 1985–1995) to the global justice era (roughly 1995–present). Engagement with new partners on non-traditional issues is shifting the scope and contours of the feminisms in question and raising anew the question of hierarchy in transnational feminist networks and in their coalition politics. This article traces the appropriation of food sovereignty by the World March of Women in the context of its alliance with the transnational peasant movement, Vía Campesina, the development of a feminist politics and discourse of food sovereignty, and enquires into the relationship between these processes and “grassroots” members of the March – the rural, peasant and Indigenous women who are understood to be the primary subjects of a feminist politics of food sovereignty.     

Nurse-led art expression in addiction treatment.

Creative expression can be a potent force in recovery programs, and psychosocial nurses trained in group processes can use art expression as part of addiction recovery and relapse prevention. Enabling clients to understand recovery and recognize what life offers without addiction is one of the best defenses against relapse during difficult times.

Akathisia. When treatment creates a problem

1. Akathisia is a state of restlessness and motor agitation, which includes subjective feelings of inner tension, emotional unease, anxiety, a constant need to move, restless motor activity, and an inability to tolerate inactivity or rest. 2. Akathisia is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed as agitation or anxiety of psychiatric origin; this often leads to inappropriate increases in the antipsychotic dosage, which then potentiates its severity, or to the misuse of antianxiety agents, which masks symptoms. 3. Akathisia can be easy to recognize by simple clinical observation of the patient's behaviors, especially if the symptoms worsen after increases in antipsychotic dosages or the frequent use of as needed medications. Assessment must also include the patient's own report.     

When disaster strikes. The concerns of staff nurses

1. This study determined how involvement with an earthquake affected patient care delivery and ascertained what nurses need to continue providing safe and efficient care in future disasters. 2. Although 60% of the staff had experienced a previous disaster, the literature described that learned coping does not automatically "transfer" to present loss experiences. 3. Providing staff with debriefing sessions and other support groups is helpful in the post-trauma period. At all levels, there is a need to communicate concerns and to be involved in disaster drills and other disaster preparedness sessions.     

When staff are assaulted. A nursing consultation support service

Increasing patient to staff assaults led to the development of a Nursing Consultation Service, which can respond to the needs of assault victims and set the tone for institutional attitudes of nonblaming concern. A member of the consultation service meets with each known assault victim to review the incident, offer support, and provide assistance in addressing issues aroused by the incident. Implementation of this service and the use of a continuous monitor to track assault incidents is vital to highlight problem areas and develop assault prevention strategies.
