Simple nonparametric estimates of the conditional distribution of a response variable given a covariate are often useful for data exploration purposes or to help with the specification or validation of a parametric or semi-parametric regression model. In this paper we propose such an estimator in the case where the response variable is interval-censored and the covariate is continuous. Our approach consists in adding weights that depend on the covariate value in the self-consistency equation proposed by Turnbull (J R Stat Soc Ser B 38:290–295, 1976), which results in an estimator that is no more difficult to implement than Turnbull’s estimator itself. We show the convergence of our algorithm and that our estimator reduces to the generalized Kaplan–Meier estimator (Beran, Nonparametric regression with randomly censored survival data, 1981) when the data are either complete or right-censored. We demonstrate by simulation that the estimator, bootstrap variance estimation and bandwidth selection (by rule of thumb or cross-validation) all perform well in finite samples. We illustrate the method by applying it to a dataset from a study on the incidence of HIV in a group of female sex workers from Kinshasa.  相似文献

A goodness-of-fit test for multivariate normality is proposed which is based on Shapiro–Wilk's statistic for univariate normality and on an empirical standardization of the observations. The critical values can be approximated by using a transformation of the univariate standard normal distribution. A Monte Carlo study reveals that this test has a better power performance than some of the best known tests for multinormality against a wide range of alternatives.  相似文献

In follow-up studies, survival data often include subjects who have had a certain event at recruitment and may potentially experience a series of subsequent events during the follow-up period. This kind of survival data collected under a cross-sectional sampling criterion is called truncated serial event data. The outcome variables of interest in this paper are serial sojourn times between successive events. To analyze the sojourn times in truncated serial event data, we need to confront two potential sampling biases arising simultaneously from a sampling criterion and induced informative censoring. In this study, nonparametric estimation of the joint probability function of serial sojourn times is developed by using inverse probabilities of the truncation and censoring times as weight functions to accommodate these two sampling biases under various situations of truncation and censoring. Relevant statistical properties of the proposed estimators are also discussed. Simulation studies and two real data are presented to illustrate the proposed methods.  相似文献

Abstract

This study uses systematic random sampling to compare the content of “Beall’s List of Predatory Journals and Publishers” and “Cabell’s Blacklist” of journals. The Beall’s List data was generated from its new site that maintains a new list besides the original list. It found that 28.5% Beall’s List sample publishers are out of business, some Cabell’s Blacklist journals have become ceased. The main takeaway is that among the Beall’s List sample publishers with a working website for journal publishing, only 31.8% can be found on Cabell’s Blacklist.  相似文献

Baker (2008 Baker, R. (2008). An order-statistics-based method for constructing multivariate distributions with fixed marginals. Journal of Multivariate Analysis 99: 23122327.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) introduced a new method for constructing multivariate distributions with given marginals based on order statistics. In this paper, we provide a test of independence for a pair of absolutely continuous random variables (X, Y) jointly distributed according to Baker’s bivariate distributions. Our purpose is to test the hypothesis that X and Y are independent versus the alternative that X and Y are positively (negatively) quadrant dependent. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed test statistic is investigated. Also, the powers of the proposed test and the class of distribution-free tests proposed by Kochar and Gupta (1987 Kochar, S. G., Gupta, R. P. (1987). Competitors of Kendall-tau test for testing independence against positive quadrant dependence. Biometrika 74(3): 664666.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) are compared empirically via a simulation study.  相似文献

When the null hypothesis of Friedman’s test is rejected, there is a wide variety of multiple comparisons that can be used to determine which treatments differ from each other. We will discuss the contexts where different multiple comparisons should be applied, when the population follows some discrete distributions commonly used to model count data in biological and ecological fields. Our simulation study shows that sign test is very conservative. Fisher’s LSD and Tukey’s HSD tests computed with ranks are the most liberal. Theoretical considerations are illustrated with data of the Azores Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi) population from Azores, Portugal.  相似文献

We reconsider the derivation of Blest’s (2003) skewness adjusted version of the classical moment-based coefficient of kurtosis and propose an adaptation of it which generally eliminates the effects of asymmetry a little more successfully. Lower bounds are provided for the two skewness adjusted kurtosis moment measures as functions of the classical coefficient of skewness. The results from a Monte Carlo experiment designed to investigate the sampling properties of numerous moment-based estimators of the two skewness adjusted kurtosis measures are used to identify those estimators with lowest mean squared error for small to medium sized samples drawn from distributions with varying levels of asymmetry and tailweight.  相似文献

Abstract

Technical services staff, along with programmers, supervisors, and frontline librarians, participate in all sorts of systems. Whether they recognize it or not, they are used to interacting with the world through the lens of the systems they work with. In this presentation from the North Carolina Serials Conference, Andreas Orphanides looks at some of the challenges of interacting with the world in terms of systems, discusses the human costs of failing to recognize the limitations of systems, and provides a framework for thinking about systems to help ensure that our systems respect the humanity of their human participants.  相似文献

Repeated neuropsychological measurements, such as mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores, are frequently used in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research to study change in cognitive function of AD patients. A question of interest among dementia researchers is whether some AD patients exhibit transient “plateaus” of cognitive function in the course of the disease. We consider a statistical approach to this question, based on irregularly spaced repeated MMSE scores. We propose an algorithm that formalizes the measurement of an apparent cognitive plateau, and a procedure to evaluate the evidence of plateaus in AD using this algorithm based on applying the algorithm to the observed data and to data sets simulated from a linear mixed model. We apply these methods to repeated MMSE data from the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, finding a high rate of apparent plateaus and also a high rate of false discovery. Simulation studies are also conducted to assess the performance of the algorithm. In general, the false discovery rate of the algorithm is high unless the rate of decline is high compared with the measurement error of the cognitive test. It is argued that the results are not a problem of the specific algorithm chosen, but reflect a lack of information concerning the presence of plateaus in the data.  相似文献

In this article, a novel hybrid method to forecast stock price is proposed. This hybrid method is based on wavelet transform, wavelet denoising, linear models (autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and exponential smoothing (ES) model), and nonlinear models (BP Neural Network and RBF Neural Network). The wavelet transform provides a set of better-behaved constitutive series than stock series for prediction. Wavelet denoising is used to eliminate some slight random fluctuations of stock series. ARIMA model and ES model are used to forecast the linear component of denoised stock series, and then BP Neural Network and RBF Neural Network are developed as tools for nonlinear pattern recognition to correct the estimation error of the prediction of linear models. The proposed method is examined in the stock market of Shanghai and Shenzhen and the results are compared with some of the most recent stock price forecast methods. The results show that the proposed hybrid method can provide a considerable improvement for the forecasting accuracy. Meanwhile, this proposed method can also be applied to analysis and forecast reliability of products or systems and improve the accuracy of reliability engineering.  相似文献

In this article, we establish strong uniform convergence and asymptotic normality of estimators of conditional quantile and conditional distribution function for a left truncated model when the data exhibit some kind of dependence. It is assumed that the observations form a stationary α-mixing sequence. The results of Lemdani et al. (2009 Lemdani , M. , Ould-Saïd , E. , Poulin , N. ( 2009 ). Asymptotic properties of a conditional quantile estimator with randomly truncated data . J. Multivariate Anal. 100 : 546559 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) are relaxed from the i.i.d. assumption to α-mixing setting. Finite sample behavior of the estimators is investigated via simulations as well.  相似文献

The concepts of relative risk and hazard ratio are generalized for ordinary ordinal and continuous response variables, respectively. Under the generalized concepts, the Cox proportional hazards model with the Breslow's and Efron's methods can be regarded as generalizations of the Mantel–Haenszel estimator for dealing with broader types of covariates and responses. When ordinal responses can be regarded as discretized observations of a hypothetical continuous variable, the estimated relative risks from the Cox model reflect the associations between the responses and covariates. Examples are given to illustrate the generalized concepts and wider applications of the Cox model and the Kaplan–Meier estimator.  相似文献

Abstract

In some clinical, environmental, or economical studies, researchers are interested in a semi-continuous outcome variable which takes the value zero with a discrete probability and has a continuous distribution for the non-zero values. Due to the measuring mechanism, it is not always possible to fully observe some outcomes, and only an upper bound is recorded. We call this left-censored data and observe only the maximum of the outcome and an independent censoring variable, together with an indicator. In this article, we introduce a mixture semi-parametric regression model. We consider a parametric model to investigate the influence of covariates on the discrete probability of the value zero. For the non-zero part of the outcome, a semi-parametric Cox’s regression model is used to study the conditional hazard function. The different parameters in this mixture model are estimated using a likelihood method. Hereby the infinite dimensional baseline hazard function is estimated by a step function. As results, we show the identifiability and the consistency of the estimators for the different parameters in the model. We study the finite sample behaviour of the estimators through a simulation study and illustrate this model on a practical data example.  相似文献

Control charts are one of the widest used techniques in statistical process control. In Phase I, historical observations are analysed in order to construct a control chart. Because of the existence of multiple outliers that are undetected by control charts such as Hotelling’s T 2 due to the masking effect, robust alternatives to Hotelling’s T 2 have been developed based on minimum volume ellipsoid (MVE) estimators, minimum covariance determinant (MCD) estimators, reweighted MCD estimators or trimmed estimators. In this paper, we use a simulation study to analyse the performance of each alternative in various situations and offer guidance for the correct use of each estimator.  相似文献
