Binary dynamic fixed and mixed logit models are extensively studied in the literature. These models are developed to examine the effects of certain fixed covariates through a parametric regression function as a part of the models. However, there are situations where one may like to consider more covariates in the model but their direct effect is not of interest. In this paper we propose a generalization of the existing binary dynamic logit (BDL) models to the semi-parametric longitudinal setup to address this issue of additional covariates. The regression function involved in such a semi-parametric BDL model contains (i) a parametric linear regression function in some primary covariates, and (ii) a non-parametric function in certain secondary covariates. We use a simple semi-parametric conditional quasi-likelihood approach for consistent estimation of the non-parametric function, and a semi-parametric likelihood approach for the joint estimation of the main regression and dynamic dependence parameters of the model. The finite sample performance of the estimation approaches is examined through a simulation study. The asymptotic properties of the estimators are also discussed. The proposed model and the estimation approaches are illustrated by reanalysing a longitudinal infectious disease data.  相似文献

There is considerable interest in parameter estimation in Lévy models. The maximum likelihood estimator is widely used because under certain conditions it enjoys asymptotic efficiency properties. The toolkit for Lévy processes is the local asymptotic normality which guarantees these conditions. Although the likelihood function is not known explicitly, we prove local asymptotic normality for the location and scale parameters of the Student-Lévy process assuming high-frequency data. In addition, we propose a numerical method to make maximum likelihood estimates feasible based on the Monte Carlo expectation-maximization algorithm. A simulation study verifies the theoretical results.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the setting where the observed data is incomplete. For the general situation where the number of gaps as well as the number of unobserved values in some gaps go to infinity, the asymptotic behavior of maximum likelihood estimator is not clear. We derive and investigate the asymptotic properties of maximum likelihood estimator under censorship and drive a statistic for testing the null hypothesis that the proposed non-nested models are equally close to the true model against the alternative hypothesis that one model is closer when we are faced with a life-time situation. Furthermore rewrite a normalization of a difference of Akaike criterion for estimating the difference of expected Kullback–Leibler risk between the distributions in two different models.  相似文献

This article discusses asymptotic theory for the maximum likelihood estimator based on incomplete data. Although much literature has implicitly assumed the basic properties of the estimator, such as consistency and asymptotic normality, it is hard to find their precise and comprehensive proofs. In this article, we first show that under MAR an estimator based on the likelihood function ignoring the missing-data mechanism is strongly consistent. The estimator is then shown to be asymptotically normal. When the data are NMAR and when the data are MAR without parameter distinctness, the consistency and the asymptotic normality are shown. Several examples are provided.  相似文献

A marginal–pairwise-likelihood estimation approach is examined in the mixed Rasch model with the binary response and logit link. This method belonging to the broad class of composite likelihood provides estimators with desirable asymptotic properties such as consistency and asymptotic normality. We study the performance of the proposed methodology when the random effect distribution is misspecified. A simulation study was conducted to compare this approach with the maximum marginal likelihood. The different results are also illustrated with an analysis of the real data set from a quality-of-life study.  相似文献

Beta Regression for Modelling Rates and Proportions   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
This paper proposes a regression model where the response is beta distributed using a parameterization of the beta law that is indexed by mean and dispersion parameters. The proposed model is useful for situations where the variable of interest is continuous and restricted to the interval (0, 1) and is related to other variables through a regression structure. The regression parameters of the beta regression model are interpretable in terms of the mean of the response and, when the logit link is used, of an odds ratio, unlike the parameters of a linear regression that employs a transformed response. Estimation is performed by maximum likelihood. We provide closed-form expressions for the score function, for Fisher's information matrix and its inverse. Hypothesis testing is performed using approximations obtained from the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator. Some diagnostic measures are introduced. Finally, practical applications that employ real data are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to improve the quality of cookies production by classifying them as good or bad from the curves of resistance of dough observed during the kneading process. As the predictor variable is functional, functional classification methodologies such as functional logit regression and functional discriminant analysis are considered. A P-spline approximation of the sample curves is proposed to improve the classification ability of these models and to suitably estimate the relationship between the quality of cookies and the resistance of dough. Inference results on the functional parameters and related odds ratios are obtained using the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators under the classical regularity conditions. Finally, the classification results are compared with alternative functional data analysis approaches such as componentwise classification on the logit regression model.  相似文献

Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) is a popular technique for analysing data for complex models where the likelihood function is intractable. It involves using simulation from the model to approximate the likelihood, with this approximate likelihood then being used to construct an approximate posterior. In this paper, we consider methods that estimate the parameters by maximizing the approximate likelihood used in ABC. We give a theoretical analysis of the asymptotic properties of the resulting estimator. In particular, we derive results analogous to those of consistency and asymptotic normality for standard maximum likelihood estimation. We also discuss how sequential Monte Carlo methods provide a natural method for implementing our likelihood‐based ABC procedures.  相似文献

Assume that we have a sequence of n independent and identically distributed random variables with a continuous distribution function F, which is specified up to a few unknown parameters. In this paper, tests based on sum‐functions of sample spacings are proposed, and large sample theory of the tests are presented under simple null hypotheses as well as under close alternatives. Tests, which are optimal within this class, are constructed, and it is noted that these tests have properties that closely parallel those of the likelihood ratio test in regular parametric models. Some examples are given, which show that the proposed tests work also in situations where the likelihood ratio test breaks down. Extensions to more general hypotheses are discussed.  相似文献

This article describes a convenient method of selecting Metropolis– Hastings proposal distributions for multinomial logit models. There are two key ideas involved. The first is that multinomial logit models have a latent variable representation similar to that exploited by Albert and Chib (J Am Stat Assoc 88:669–679, 1993) for probit regression. Augmenting the latent variables replaces the multinomial logit likelihood function with the complete data likelihood for a linear model with extreme value errors. While no conjugate prior is available for this model, a least squares estimate of the parameters is easily obtained. The asymptotic sampling distribution of the least squares estimate is Gaussian with known variance. The second key idea in this paper is to generate a Metropolis–Hastings proposal distribution by conditioning on the estimator instead of the full data set. The resulting sampler has many of the benefits of so-called tailored or approximation Metropolis–Hastings samplers. However, because the proposal distributions are available in closed form they can be implemented without numerical methods for exploring the posterior distribution. The algorithm converges geometrically ergodically, its computational burden is minor, and it requires minimal user input. Improvements to the sampler’s mixing rate are investigated. The algorithm is also applied to partial credit models describing ordinal item response data from the 1998 National Assessment of Educational Progress. Its application to hierarchical models and Poisson regression are briefly discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Logit-linear and probit-linear two-part models can be used to analyze data that are a mixture of zeros and positive continuous responses. The slopes in the linear part of a model can be constrained to be proportional to the slopes in the logit or probit part. In this article, it is shown that implementing such a constraint will decrease (in Loewner ordering) the asymptotic covariance matrix of the maximum likelihood estimates. A case study is provided using coronary artery calcification data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.  相似文献

We consider nonparametric logistic regression and propose a generalized likelihood test for detecting a threshold effect that indicates a relationship between some risk factor and a defined outcome above the threshold but none below it. One important field of application is occupational medicine and in particular, epidemiological studies. In epidemiological studies, segmented fully parametric logistic regression models are often threshold models, where it is assumed that the exposure has no influence on a response up to a possible unknown threshold, and has an effect beyond that threshold. Finding efficient methods for detection and estimation of a threshold is a very important task in these studies. This article proposes such methods in a context of nonparametric logistic regression. We use a local version of unknown likelihood functions and show that under rather common assumptions the asymptotic power of our test is one. We present a guaranteed non asymptotic upper bound for the significance level of the proposed test. If applying the test yields the acceptance of the conclusion that there was a change point (and hence a threshold limit value), we suggest using the local maximum likelihood estimator of the change point and consider the asymptotic properties of this estimator.  相似文献

Likelihood Asymptotics   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The paper gives an overview of modern likelihood asymptotics with emphasis on results and applicability. Only parametric inference in well-behaved models is considered and the theory discussed leads to highly accurate asymptotic tests for general smooth hypotheses. The tests are refinements of the usual asymptotic likelihood ratio tests, and for one-dimensional hypotheses the test statistic is known as r *, introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen. Examples illustrate the applicability and accuracy as well as the complexity of the required computations. Modern likelihood asymptotics has developed by merging two lines of research: asymptotic ancillarity is the basis of the statistical development, and saddlepoint approximations or Laplace-type approximations have simultaneously developed as the technical foundation. The main results and techniques of these two lines will be reviewed, and a generalization to multi-dimensional tests is developed. In the final part of the paper further problems and ideas are presented. Among these are linear models with non-normal error, non-parametric linear models obtained by estimation of the residual density in combination with the present results, and the generalization of the results to restricted maximum likelihood and similar structured models.  相似文献

Summary.  We consider the problem of testing null hypotheses that include restrictions on the variance component in a linear mixed model with one variance component and we derive the finite sample and asymptotic distribution of the likelihood ratio test and the restricted likelihood ratio test. The spectral representations of the likelihood ratio test and the restricted likelihood ratio test statistics are used as the basis of efficient simulation algorithms of their null distributions. The large sample χ 2 mixture approximations using the usual asymptotic theory for a null hypothesis on the boundary of the parameter space have been shown to be poor in simulation studies. Our asymptotic calculations explain these empirical results. The theory of Self and Liang applies only to linear mixed models for which the data vector can be partitioned into a large number of independent and identically distributed subvectors. One-way analysis of variance and penalized splines models illustrate the results.  相似文献

Bivariate exponential models have often been used for the analysis of competing risks data involving two correlated risk components. Competing risks data consist only of the time to failure and cause of failure. In situations where there is positive probability of simultaneous failure, possibly the most widely used model is the Marshall–Olkin (J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 62 (1967) 30) bivariate lifetime model. This distribution is not absolutely continuous as it involves a singularity component. However, the likelihood function based on the competing risks data is then identifiable, and any inference, Bayesian or frequentist, can be carried out in a straightforward manner. For the analysis of absolutely continuous bivariate exponential models, standard approaches often run into difficulty due to the lack of a fully identifiable likelihood (Basu and Ghosh; Commun. Statist. Theory Methods 9 (1980) 1515). To overcome the nonidentifiability, the usual frequentist approach is based on an integrated likelihood. Such an approach is implicit in Wada et al. (Calcutta Statist. Assoc. Bull. 46 (1996) 197) who proved some related asymptotic results. We offer in this paper an alternative Bayesian approach. Since systematic prior elicitation is often difficult, the present study focuses on Bayesian analysis with noninformative priors. It turns out that with an appropriate reparameterization, standard noninformative priors such as Jeffreys’ prior and its variants can be applied directly even though the likelihood is not fully identifiable. Two noninformative priors are developed that consist of Laplace's prior for nonidentifiable parameters and Laplace's and Jeffreys's priors for identifiable parameters. The resulting Bayesian procedures possess some frequentist optimality properties as well. Finally, these Bayesian methods are illustrated with analyses of a data set originating out of a lung cancer clinical trial conducted by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.  相似文献

A sequential method for estimating the expected value of a random variable is proposed. Using a parametric model, the updating formula is based on the maximum likelihood estimators of the roots of the expected value function. Under certain conditions, it is demonstrated that the estimators of the roots are consistent, when a two-parameter logit model version of the procedure is used for binary data. In addition, the estimators of the logit parameters have an asymptotic normal distribution. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the new method for small to medium sample sizes. Compared to other sequential approximation methods, the proposed method performed well, especially when estimating several roots simultaneously.  相似文献

Semiparametric maximum likelihood estimation with estimating equations (SMLE) is more flexible than traditional methods; it has fewer restrictions on distributions and regression models. The required information about distribution and regression structures is incorporated in estimating equations of the SMLE to improve the estimation quality of non‐parametric methods. The likelihood of SMLE for censored data involves complicated implicit functions without closed‐form expressions, and the first derivatives of the log‐profile‐likelihood cannot be expressed as summations of independent and identically distributed random variables; it is challenging to derive asymptotic properties of the SMLE for censored data. For group‐censored data, the paper shows that all the implicit functions are well defined and obtains the asymptotic distributions of the SMLE for model parameters and lifetime distributions. With several examples the paper compares the SMLE, the regular non‐parametric likelihood estimation method and the parametric MLEs in terms of their asymptotic efficiencies, and illustrates application of SMLE. Various asymptotic distributions of the likelihood ratio statistics are derived for testing the adequacy of estimating equations and a partial set of parameters equal to some known values.  相似文献

Testing conditional symmetry against various alternative diagonals-parameter symmetry models often provides a point of departure in studies of square contingency tables with ordered categories. Typically, chi-square or likelihood-ratio tests are used for such purposes. Since these tests depend on the validity of asymptotic approximation, they may be inappropriate in small-sample situations where exact tests are required. In this paper, we apply the theory of UMP unbiased tests to develop a class of exact tests for conditional symmetry in small samples. Oesophageal cancer and longitudinal income data are used to illustrate the approach.  相似文献

A procedure is developed to test the equality of the quantiles from k populations, assuming the responses follow a two-parameter binary model. The method utilizes the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimators. The exact distribution of the test statistic is discussed in general. This exact distribution is generated for the logit model in order to investgate the convergence properties of the asymptotic procedure.  相似文献

The Fisher information is intricately linked to the asymptotic (first-order) optimality of maximum likelihood estimators for parametric complete-data models. When data are missing completely at random in a multivariate setup, it is shown that information in a single observation is well-defined and it plays the same role as in the complete-data model in characterizing the first-order asymptotic optimality properties of associated maximum likelihood estimators; computational aspects are also thoroughly appraised. As an illustration, the logistic regression model with incomplete binary responses and an incomplete categorical covariate is worked out.  相似文献
