Effect of Target Position and Target Task on Judge Sensitivity to Felt Rapport

The present studies investigated the effects of target context on judge sensitivity to target felt rapport. The results suggest that judge sensitivity may be increased by: (a) positioning the target to the judge's left so that the judgment task may benefit from the specialization of the right hemisphere for processing nonverbal behavior, and (b) assigning targets to a task unconstrained by social norms that allows for more spontaneous and revealing target behavior. These results have major implications for the way that interpersonal sensitivity and rapport research is conducted and for understanding interpersonal perception in everyday life.

St. Louis Target City Information System

SUMMARY

In 1993, St. Louis was awarded a cooperative agreement to develop a centralized intake system which would serve as a single entry point to all of the publicly funded adult substance abuse treatment centers in St. Louis City and County. This article follows the development of the information system established to meet these goals from conceptualization to implementation. The obstacles encountered during the development are discussed, along with the current design of the system that has been instituted statewide.

Target weight procedure: preventing water intoxication.

1. Prevention of water intoxication depends on early intervention for polydipsic patients who seem to be retaining fluid. The Target Weight Procedure is designed to detect early signs of fluid retention by means of weight gain and low sodium levels. 2. The use of this protocol, in addition to successfully decreasing the number of acute water intoxication episodes, has also led to increased awareness of the meaning of patient behavior, an increased sense of control of patients with water intoxication over their behavior, and an increased feeling of competence among the staff. 3. The success of the protocol seems to be based on its purpose of identifying patients at risk and those with an impending episode, as well as secondary advantages, for example, giving the patients the option to alter their behavior to be removed from the protocol.     

Target Problems,Time Limits,Task Structure

This paper documents the opportunities for student field training within university-based institutes on aging. Both the advantages and disadvantages of operating such field-work programs are analyzed. A practicum is proposed which reflects an emphasis on planning, administration, policy analysis, and program development. The benefits to students include collaboration with the allied professions, availability of specialized training resources, and emphasis on proposal writing and communication skills. Potential complicating factors for student learning grow out of the institute’s close proximity to academic accountability, the multiplicity of roles carried by field-instruction staff, and placement in an environment different from that of traditional service agencies.

Development of the Detroit Target Cities Management Information System

SUMMARY

The Detroit Target City project was developed on a previously existing central intake system. The management information system, developed using a terminal-host model with a character based user interface, supports client treatment matching, treatment slot management, and case management tools. In addition to describing the system and its development lessons learned in the creation and implementation of the system are discussed.     

Revisiting Perceiver and Target Gender Effects in Deception Detection

Existing research is inconclusive regarding the influence of perceiver gender and target gender on lie detection. Researchers have offered a number of conclusions regarding gender effects in deception detection (e.g., women are better at lie detection than men, participant and target gender interact in predicting deception detection accuracy, there are no gender effects in deception detection). In the current work, we revisit the question of whether and how gender influences lie detection, employing a large database of controlled stimuli, a large sample size, and the analytical advantages provided by signal detection theory. Participants viewed videos of male and female targets telling truths and lies about interpersonal relationships, and after each video, they rendered a truth or lie judgment. Female targets were easier to “read” (i.e., greater sensitivity) and were called liars more frequently than male targets. No effects of participant gender were observed. This work sheds light on an important issue in the lie detection literature (i.e., does gender matter?), and it identifies important considerations for understanding gender biases and cross-gender social interactions.
