A generalized neighbor design relaxes the equality condition on the number of times two treatments as neighbors in the design. In this article, we have considered the construction of some classes of generalized neighbor designs with block size k=3 by using the method of cyclic shifts. The distinguishing feature of this construction method is that the properties of a design can easily be obtained from the sets of shifts instead of constructing the actual blocks of the design. A catalog of generalized neighbor designs with block size k=3 is compiled for v∈{5,6,…,18} treatments and for different replications. We provide the reader with a simpler method of construction, and in general the catalog that gives an open choice to the experimenter for selecting any class of neighbor designs.  相似文献

The design of statistical experiments, as developed by R. A. Fisher and his followers, often used combinatorial structures that yielded simple calculation of estimates and/or symmetric variances and covariances. Examples are block designs with balance, regression experiments with equally spaced observations, etc. More recently, considerations of optimality (choosing a design that achieves most accurate inference in some sense) have sometimes justified the traditional designs, but have sometimes led to new combinatorial investigations. Block designs to which have been added a number of singly-replicated treatments, known as secondary treatments, are particularly useful for experiments where only small amounts of material are available for some treatments, for example new plant varieties. The designs are of particular use in the microarray situation. Such designs are known as 'augmented designs'. This paper obtains the properties of these designs and shows that, with an equal number of secondary treatments in each block, the A-optimal design is obtained by using the A-optimal design for the original block design. It develops formulae for the variance of treatment comparisons, for both the primary and the secondary treatments. A number of examples are used to illustrate the results.  相似文献

Abstract

Repeated measurement designs (RMDs) are widely used in medicine, pharmacology, animal sciences and psychology. In these fields, there are several situations where these designs should be used in periods of different sizes. With the use of RMD, residual effects or carry over effects may arise and balanced RMDs are solution to this problem. In this article, therefore, some infinite series are developed through method of cyclic shifts to obtain circular balanced repeated measurements designs in periods of two different sizes.  相似文献

Mixture experiments are often carried out in the presence of process variables, such as days of the week or different machines in a manufacturing process, or different ovens in bread and cake making. In such experiments it is particularly useful to be able to arrange the design in orthogonal blocks, so that the model in tue mixture vanauies may ue iitteu inucpenuentiy or tne UIOCK enects mtrouuceu to take account of the changes in the process variables. It is possible in some situations that some of the ingredients in the mixture, such as additives or flavourings, are present in soian quantities, pernaps as iuw a.s 5% ur even !%, resulting in the design space being restricted to only part of the mixture simplex. Hau and Box (1990) discussed the construction of experimental designs for situations where constraints are placed on the design variables. They considered projecting standard response surface designs, including factorial designs and central composite designs, into the restricted design space, and showed that the desirable property of block orthogonality is preserved by the projections considered. Here we present a number of examples of projection designs and illustrate their use when some of the ingredients are restricted to small values, such that the design space is restricted to a sub-region within the usual simplex in the mixture variables.  相似文献

In this paper the use of Kronecker designs for factorial experiments is considered. The two-factor Kronecker design is considered in some detail and the efficiency factors of the main effects and interaction in such a design are derived. It is shown that the efficiency factor of the interaction is at least as large as the product of the efficiency factors of the two main effects and when both the component designs are totally balanced then its efficiency factor will be higher than the efficiency factor of either of the two main effects. If the component designs are nearly balanced then its efficiency factor will be approximately at least as large as the efficiency factor of either of the two main effects. It is argued that these designs are particularly useful for factorial experiments.Extensions to the multi-factor design are given and it is proved that the two-factor Kronecker design will be connected if the component designs are connected.  相似文献

Design of experiments for estimating the slopes of a response surface is considered. Design criteria analogous to the traditional ones but based upon the variance-covariance matrix of the estimated slopes along factor axes are proposed. Optimal designs under the proposed criteria are derived for second-order polynomial regression over hypercubic regions. Best de¬signs within some commonly used classes of designs are also obtained and their efficiencies are investigated.  相似文献

Constructions of blocked mixture designs are considered in situations where BLUEs of the block effect contrasts are orthogonal to the BLUEs of the regression coefficients. Orthogonal arrays (OA), Balanced Arrays (BAs), incidence matrices of balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs), and partially balanced incomplete block designs (PBIBDs) are used. Designs with equal and unequal block sizes are considered. Also both cases where the constants involved in the orthogonality conditions depend and do not depend on the factors have been taken into account. Some standard (already available) designs can be obtained as particular cases of the designs proposed here.  相似文献

This article examines the central composite design in which some of the experimental runs are replicated. Three different classes of N-point designs are compared using the criterion of Schur's ordering under orthogonality, rotatablity, and slope- rotatablity conditions. The response surface designs with the star portion replicated seem to have more potential than others under orthogonality condition, while the designs with the cube portion replicated is preferable to the designs with their star portion or only the center point replicated under rotatable and slope-rotatable conditions.  相似文献

Current methods for the design of efficient incomplete block experiments when the observations within a block are dependent usually involve computer searches of binary designs. These searches give little insight into the features that lead to efficiency, and can miss more efficient designs. This paper aims to develop some approximations which give some insight into the features of a design that lead to high efficiency under a generalized least-squares analysis for a known dependence structure, and to show that non-binary designs can be more efficient for some dependence structures. In particular, we show how neighbour balance and end plot balance are related to the design efficiency for low-order autoregressions, and that under moderate positive dependence, replication at lag two can sometimes increase efficiency.  相似文献

Abstract

Designs for the first order trigonometric regression model over an interval on the real line are considered for the situation where estimation of the slope of the response surface at various points in the factor space is of primary interest. Minimization of the variance of the estimated slope at a point maximized over all points in the region of interest is taken as the design criterion. Optimal designs under the minimax criterion are derived for the situation where the design region and the region of interest are identical and a symmetric “partial cycle”. Some comparisons of the minimax designs with the traditional D- and A-optimal designs are provided. Efficiencies of some exact designs under the minimax criterion are also investigated.  相似文献

Design of experiments is considered for the situation where estimation of the slopes of a response surface is the main interest. Under the D-minimax criterion, the objective is to minimize the generalized variance of the estimated axial slopes at a point maximized over all points in the region of interest in the factor space. For the third-order model over spherical regions, the D-minimax designs are derived in two and three dimensions. Box and Behnken [1958. Some new three level second-order designs for surface fitting. Statistical Technical Research Group Technical Report No. 26. Princeton University, Princeton, NJ; 1960. Some new three level designs for the study of quantitative variables. Technometrics 2, 455–475.] introduced a class of 3-level second-order designs for fitting the second-order response surface model. These 17 Box–Behnken designs (BB designs) are available for 3–12 and 16 factors. Although BB designs were developed nearly 50 years ago, they and the central-composite designs of Box and Wilson [1951. On the experimental attainment of optimum conditions. J. Royal Statist. Soc., Ser. B 13, 1–45.] are still the most often recommended response surface designs. Of the 17 aforementioned BB designs, 10 were constructed from balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) and seven were constructed from partially BIBDs (PBIBDs). In this paper we show that these seven BB designs constructed from PBIBDs can be improved in terms of rotatability as well as average prediction variance, DD- and GG-efficiency. In addition, we also report new orthogonally blocked solutions for 5, 8, 9, 11 and 13 factors. Note that an 11-factor BB design is available but cannot be orthogonally blocked. Analyzing supersaturated designs is challenging because the number of experiments is less than the number of factors. In this article we propose a new contrasts based method to analyze supersaturated designs. The method is discussed and explained through some simulation examples. A polycross is the pollination by natural hybridization of a group of genotypes, generally selected, grown in isolation from other compatible genotypes in such a way to promote random open pollination. A particular practical application of the polycross method occurs in the production of a synthetic variety resulting from cross-pollinated plants. Laying out these experiments in appropriate designs, known as polycross designs, would not only save experimental resources but also gather more information from the experiment. Different situations may arise in polycross nurseries where accordingly different polycross designs may be used. For situations in which some genotypes interfere in the growth or production of other genotypes, but have to be grown together, neighbour-restricted design is a better option. Furthermore, when the topography of the nursery is such that a known wind system in a certain direction may prevail, then designs balanced for neighbour effects of genotypes only in the direction of wind are appropriate which may help in saving experimental resources to a great extent. Also, when genotypes are planted in a small area without leaving much space between rows, designs balanced for neighbour effects from all possible eight directions are useful to have equal chance of pollinating and being pollinated by every other genotype. Here, polycross designs have been obtained to match above-mentioned three situations. SAS Macros have also been developed to generate these proposed designs.  相似文献

Sequential experiment is an indispensable strategy and is applied immensely to various fields of science and engineering. In such experiments, it is desirable that a given design should retain the properties as much as possible when few runs are added to it. The designs based on sequential experiment strategy are called extended designs. In this paper, we have studied theoretical properties of such experimental strategies using uniformity measure. We have also derived a lower bound of extended designs under wrap-around L2-discrepancy measure. Moreover, we have provided an algorithm to construct uniform (or nearly uniform) extended designs. For ease of understanding, some examples are also presented and a lot of sequential strategies for a 27-run original design are tabulated for practice.  相似文献

Optimal three-stage designs with equal sample sizes at each stage are presented and compared to fixed sample designs, fully sequential designs, designs restricted to use the fixed sample critical value at the final stage, and to modifications of other group sequential designs previously proposed in the literature. Typically, the greatest savings realized with interim analyses are obtained by the first interim look. More than 50% of the savings possible with a fully sequential design can be realized with a simple two-stage design. Three-stage designs can realize as much as 75% of the possible savings. Without much loss in efficiency, the designs can be modified so that the critical value at the final stage equals the usual fixed sample value while maintaining the overall level of significance, alleviating some potential confusion should a final stage be necessary. Some common group sequential designs, modified to allow early acceptance of the null hypothesis, are shown to be nearly optimal in some settings while performing poorly in others. An example is given to illustrate the use of several three-stage plans in the design of clinical trials.  相似文献

Crossover designs have some advantages over standard clinical trial designs and they are often used in trials evaluating the efficacy of treatments for infertility. However, clinical trials of infertility treatments violate a fundamental condition of crossover designs, because women who become pregnant in the first treatment period are not treated in the second period. In previous research, to deal with this problem, some new designs, such as re‐randomization designs, and analysis methods including the logistic mixture model and the beta‐binomial mixture model were proposed. Although the performance of these designs and methods has previously been evaluated in large‐scale clinical trials with sample sizes of more than 1000 per group, the actual sample sizes of infertility treatment trials are usually around 100 per group. The most appropriate design and analysis for these moderate‐scale clinical trials are currently unclear. In this study, we conducted simulation studies to determine the appropriate design and analysis method of moderate‐scale clinical trials for irreversible endpoints by evaluating the statistical power and bias in the treatment effect estimates. The Mantel–Haenszel method had similar power and bias to the logistic mixture model. The crossover designs had the highest power and the smallest bias. We recommend using a combination of the crossover design and the Mantel–Haenszel method for two‐period, two‐treatment clinical trials with irreversible endpoints. A minimum point set requirement for two-factor designs is established, thus enabling one to form an infinity of such designs. Some difficulties in obtaining deLigns for k>2 are described. Neighbor designs are useful to neutralize the neighbor effects. In literature, most of the constructed neighbor designs are in circular blocks but linear blocks have more practical application in field experiments. In this article, some infinite series of minimal neighbor designs are constructed in proper linear blocks. There are many situations where minimal neighbor designs cannot be constructed in proper linear blocks. To overcome this problem neighbor designs in improper linear blocks and GN2-designs in proper linear blocks are constructed.  相似文献
