In this article, the weighted bootstrap difference between two-sample means for generalized Behrens-Fisher problems is investigated along with its strong consistency. Moreover, the one-order accurate weighted bootstrap approximation to the sample distribution of sample difference is also established and hence based on it the weighted bootstrap intervals for the population difference is constructed. Simulation studies show that the weighted bootstrap interval performs better than other intervals we considered in some cases.  相似文献

In this article, we discuss constructing confidence intervals (CIs) of performance measures for an M/G/1 queueing system. Fiducial empirical distribution is applied to estimate the service time distribution. We construct fiducial empirical quantities (FEQs) for the performance measures. The relationship between generalized pivotal quantity and fiducial empirical quantity is illustrated. We also present numerical examples to show that the FEQs can yield new CIs dominate the bootstrap CIs in relative coverage (defined as the ratio of coverage probability to average length of CI) for performance measures of an M/G/1 queueing system in most of the cases.  相似文献

We propose a nonparametric method of constructing confidence interval for a scalar parameter from stochastic approximation through the efficient Robbins–Monro procedure proposed by Joseph (2004 Joseph, V.R. Unlike the bootstrap method where the number of resampling is fixed in advance, the proposed procedure iteratively searches the endpoints in an optimal way such that the convergence is fast and the coverage is obtained accurately. This article proposes a method for constructing confidence intervals for the impulse response function of a univariate time series with a near unit root. These confidence intervals control coverage, whereas the existing techniques can all have coverage far below the nominal level. A global measure of biomarker effectiveness is the Youden index, the maximum difference between sensitivity, the probability of correctly classifying diseased individuals, and 1-specificity, the probability of incorrectly classifying healthy individuals. The cut-point leading to the index is the optimal cut-point when equal weight is given to sensitivity and specificity. Using the delta method, we present approaches for estimating confidence intervals for the Youden index and corresponding optimal cut-point for normally distributed biomarkers and also those following gamma distributions. We also provide confidence intervals using various bootstrapping methods. A comparison of interval width and coverage probability is conducted through simulation over a variety of parametric situations. Confidence intervals via delta method are shown to have both closer to nominal coverage and shorter interval widths than confidence intervals from the bootstrapping methods.  相似文献

Recently, the methods used to estimate monotonic regression (MR) models have been substantially improved, and some algorithms can now produce high-accuracy monotonic fits to multivariate datasets containing over a million observations. Nevertheless, the computational burden can be prohibitively large for resampling techniques in which numerous datasets are processed independently of each other. Here, we present efficient algorithms for estimation of confidence limits in large-scale settings that take into account the similarity of the bootstrap or jackknifed datasets to which MR models are fitted. In addition, we introduce modifications that substantially improve the accuracy of MR solutions for binary response variables. The performance of our algorithms is illustrated using data on death in coronary heart disease for a large population. This example also illustrates that MR can be a valuable complement to logistic regression.  相似文献

Based on the large-sample normal distribution of the sample log odds ratio and its asymptotic variance from maximum likelihood logistic regression, shortest 95% confidence intervals for the odds ratio are developed. Although the usual confidence interval on the odds ratio is unbiased, the shortest interval is not. That is, while covering the true odds ratio with the stated probability, the shortest interval covers some values below the true odds ratio with higher probability. The upper and lower limits of the shortest interval are shifted to the left of those of the usual interval, with greater shifts in the upper limits. With the log odds model γ + , in which X is binary, simulation studies showed that the approximate average percent difference in length is 7.4% for n (sample size) = 100, and 3.8% for n = 200. Precise estimates of the covering probabilities of the two types of intervals were obtained from simulation studies, and are compared graphically. For odds ratio estimates greater (less) than one, shortest intervals are more (less) likely to include one than are the usual intervals. The usual intervals are likelihood-based and the shortest intervals are not. The usual intervals have minimum expected length among the class of unbiased intervals. Shortest intervals do not provide important advantages over the usual intervals, which we recommend for practical use.  相似文献

In comparing a collection of K populations, it is common practice to display in one visualization confidence intervals for the corresponding population parameters θ1, θ2, …, θK. For a pair of confidence intervals that do (or do not) overlap, viewers of the visualization are cognitively compelled to declare that there is not (or there is) a statistically significant difference between the two corresponding population parameters. It is generally well known that the method of examining overlap of pairs of confidence intervals should not be used for formal hypothesis testing. However, use of a single visualization with overlapping and nonoverlapping confidence intervals leads many to draw such conclusions, despite the best efforts of statisticians toward preventing users from reaching such conclusions. In this article, we summarize some alternative visualizations from the literature that can be used to properly test equality between a pair of population parameters. We recommend that these visualizations be used with caution to avoid incorrect statistical inference. The methods presented require only that we have K sample estimates and their associated standard errors. We also assume that the sample estimators are independent, unbiased, and normally distributed.  相似文献

In the computation of two-sided confidence intervals for the binomial parameter p (using the binomial mass function), it is known that such intervals achieve a confidence coefficient that in general is not equal to the confidence level 1 – α, say. In this article we present some general results on the confidence coefficient and tabulate them for selected pairs (α, n = number of trials). The paper considers the problem of finding accurate small sample confidence intervals for regression parameters. Its approach is to construct conditional intervals with good robustness characteristics. This robustness is obtained by the choice of the density under which the conditional interval is computed. The among variance component in the balanced one-factor nested components-of-variance model is of interest in many fields of application. Except for an artificial method that uses a set of random numbers which is of no use in practical situations, an exact-size confidence interval on the among variance has not yet been derived. This paper provides a detailed comparison of three approximate confidence intervals which possess certain desired properties and have been shown to be the better methods among many available approximate procedures. Specifically, the minimum and the maximum of the confidence coefficients for the one- and two-sided intervals of each method are obtained. This work aims at assessing, by simulation methods, the performance of asymptotic confidence intervals for Zenga's new inequality measure. The results are compared with those obtained on Gini's measure, perhaps the most widely used index for measuring inequality in income and wealth distributions. Our findings show that the coverage accuracy and the size of the confidence intervals for the two measures are very similar in samples from economic size distributions.  相似文献

Confidence intervals for the pth-quantile Q of a two-parameter exponential distribution provide useful information on the plausible range of Q, and only inefficient equal-tail confidence intervals have been discussed in the statistical literature so far. In this article, the construction of the shortest possible confidence interval within a family of two-sided confidence intervals is addressed. This shortest confidence interval is always shorter, and can be substantially shorter, than the corresponding equal-tail confidence interval. Furthermore, the computational intensity of both methodologies is similar, and therefore it is advantageous to use the shortest confidence interval. It is shown how the results provided in this paper can apply to data obtained from progressive Type II censoring, with standard Type II censoring as a special case. The applications of more complex confidence interval constructions through acceptance set inversions that can employ prior information are also discussed.  相似文献

The standard method of obtaining a two-sided confidence interval for the Poisson mean produces an interval which is exact but can be shortened without violating the minimum coverage requirement. Bar graphs displaying means have been shown to bias interpretations of the underlying distributions: viewers typically report higher likelihoods for values within a bar than outside of a bar. One explanation is that viewer attention is driven by the whole bar, rather than only the edge that provides information about an average. This study explored several approaches to correcting this bias. Bar graphs with 95% confidence intervals were used with different levels of contrast to manipulate attention directed to the bar. Viewers showed less bias when the salience of the bar itself was reduced. Response latencies were lowest and bias was eliminated when participants were presented with only a confidence interval and no bar.  相似文献

This article introduces mean-minimum (MM) exact confidence intervals for a binomial probability. These intervals guarantee that both the mean and the minimum frequentist coverage never drop below specified values. For example, an MM 95[93]% interval has mean coverage at least 95% and minimum coverage at least 93%. In the conventional sense, such an interval can be viewed as an exact 93% interval that has mean coverage at least 95% or it can be viewed as an approximate 95% interval that has minimum coverage at least 93%. Graphical and numerical summaries of coverage and expected length suggest that the Blaker-based MM exact interval is an attractive alternative to, even an improvement over, commonly recommended approximate and exact intervals, including the Agresti–Coull approximate interval, the Clopper–Pearson (CP) exact interval, and the more recently recommended CP-, Blaker-, and Sterne-based mean-coverage-adjusted approximate intervals.  相似文献

This article deals with the bootstrap as an alternative method to construct confidence intervals for the hyperparameters of structural models. The bootstrap procedure considered is the classical nonparametric bootstrap in the residuals of the fitted model using a well-known approach. The performance of this procedure is empirically obtained through Monte Carlo simulations implemented in Ox. Asymptotic and percentile bootstrap confidence intervals for the hyperparameters are built and compared by means of the coverage percentages. The results are similar but the bootstrap procedure is better for small sample sizes. The methods are applied to a real time series and confidence intervals are built for the hyperparameters.  相似文献
