Summary Robust Bayesian analysis deals simultaneously with a class of possible prior distributions, instead of a single distribution. This paper concentrates on the surprising results that can be obtained when applying the theory to problems of testing precise hypotheses when the “objective” class of prior distributions is assumed. First, an example is given demonstrating the serious inadequacy of P-values for this problem. Next, it is shown how the approach can provide statistical quantification of Occam's Razor, the famous principle of science that advocates choice of the simpler of two hypothetical explanations of data. Finally, the theory is applied to multinomial testing. We give random variate generators for the generalized hyperbolic secant distribution and related families such as Morris's skewed generalized hyperbolic secant family and a family introduced by Laha and Lukacs. The rejection method generators are uniformly fast over the parameter space and are based upon a complex function representation of the distributions due to Harkness and HarknessThe author's research was sponsored by NSERC Grant A3456 and FCAR Grant 90-ER-0291.  相似文献

We introduce a number of weighted partial sum processes of which certain sup-norm functionals may be used, for example, to detect changes in the mean of independent observations. Their limiting distributions are derived mathematically, simulated and then tabulated. With this information, a detailed numerical investigation of the power of these functionals is carried out.* *Research mainly done while at Carleton University, partially supported by an NSERC Canada Grant of Miklós Csörg? at Carleton University, Ottawa. In this article, a new class of distributions is introduced, which generalizes the linear failure rate distribution and is obtained by compounding this distribution and power series class of distributions. This new class of distributions is called the linear failure rate-power series distributions and contains some new distributions such as linear failure rate-geometric, linear failure rate-Poisson, linear failure rate-logarithmic, linear failure rate-binomial distributions, and Rayleigh-power series class of distributions. Some former works such as exponential-power series class of distributions, exponential-geometric, exponential-Poisson, and exponential-logarithmic distributions are special cases of the new proposed model. The ability of the linear failure rate-power series class of distributions is in covering five possible hazard rate function, that is, increasing, decreasing, upside-down bathtub (unimodal), bathtub and increasing-decreasing-increasing shaped. Several properties of this class of distributions such as moments, maximum likelihood estimation procedure via an EM-algorithm and inference for a large sample, are discussed in this article. In order to show the flexibility and potentiality, the fitted results of the new class of distributions and some of its submodels are compared using two real datasets.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a class of distributions with the inverse linear mean residual quantile function. The distributional properties of the family of distributions are studied. We then discuss the reliability characteristics of the family of distributions. Some characterizations of the class of distributions are also discussed. The parameters of the class of distributions are estimated using the method of L-moments. The proposed class of distributions is applied to a real data set.  相似文献

In this paper, the authors introduce a class of distributions known as complex elliptically symmetric distributions. The complex multivariate normal and complex multivariate t distributions are members of this class. Various properties of the complex elliptically symmetric distributions are studied. Finally, the robustness of certain test procedures are discussed when the assumption of complex multivariate normality is violated but the underlying distribution still belongs to the class of elliptically symmetric distributions.  相似文献

In the present paper, we introduce and study a class of distributions that has the linear mean residual quantile function. Various distributional properties and reliability characteristics of the class are studied. Some characterizations of the class of distributions are presented. We then present generalizations of this class of distributions using the relationship between various quantile based reliability measures. The method of L-moments is employed to estimate parameters of the class of distributions. Finally, we apply the proposed class of distributions to a real data set.  相似文献

A new class of location-parameter discrete probability distributions (LDPD) has been defined where the population mean is the location parameter. It has been shown that some single parameter discrete distributions do not belong to this class and all discrete probability distributions belonging to this class can be characterized by their variances only. Expressions are given for the first four central moments and a recurrence formula for higher central moments has been obtained. Eight theorems are given to characterize the various distributions in the LDPD class.  相似文献

We extend the Weibull power series (WPS) class of distributions to the new class of extended Weibull power series (EWPS) class of distributions. The EWPS distributions are related to series and parallel systems with a random number of components, whereas the WPS distributions [Morais AL, Barreto-Souza W. A compound class of Weibull and power series distributions. Computational Statistics and Data Analysis. 2011;55:1410–1425] are related to series systems only. Unlike the WPS distributions, for which the Weibull is a limiting special case, the Weibull law is a particular case of the EWPS distributions. We prove that the distributions in this class are identifiable under a simple assumption. We also prove stochastic and hazard rate order results and highlight that the shapes of the EWPS distributions are markedly more flexible than the shapes of the WPS distributions. We define a regression model for the EWPS response random variable to model a scale parameter and its quantiles. We present the maximum likelihood estimator and prove its consistency and asymptotic normal distribution. Although series and parallel systems motivated the construction of this class, the EWPS distributions are suitable for modelling a wide range of positive data sets. To illustrate potential uses of this model, we apply it to a real data set on the tensile strength of coconut fibres and present a simple device for diagnostic purposes.  相似文献

A class of distributions associated with the ratio of two folded normal random variables is introduced which strictly includes the half standard Cauchy distribution. The properties of this class of distributions are studied, along with a graph of the possible shapes of its density functions. The salient features of this class are mathematical tractability and statistical applicability. Utility of the class of distributions is demonstrated by presenting four applications.  相似文献

A new characterization for the univariate class of new better than used ‘NBU’ distributions in terms of stochastic ordering is introduced. A multivariate version of this characterization is then used to define a multivariate class of NBU distributions. Basic properties of this class are derived. Comparisons and relationships of this new class with earlier classes are developed. Two multivariate new worse than used (NWU) classes of life distributions are defined and compared and their basic properties are studied.  相似文献

In this article, we study some results related to a specific class of distributions, called skew-curved-symmetric family of distributions that depends on a parameter controlling the skewness and kurtosis at the same time. Special elements of this family which are studied include symmetric and well-known asymmetric distributions. General results are given for the score function and the observed information matrix. It is shown that the observed information matrix is always singular for some special cases. We illustrate the flexibility of this class of distributions with an application to a real dataset on characteristics of Australian athletes.  相似文献

A new rich class of generalized two-sided power (TSP) distributions, where their density functions are expressed in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, is introduced and studied. In this class, the symmetric distributions are supported by finite intervals and have normal shape densities. Our study on TSP distributions also leads us to a new class of discrete distributions on {0, 1, …, k}. In addition, a new numerical method for parameter estimation using moments is given.  相似文献

Skew-normal/independent distributions are a class of asymmetric thick-tailed distributions that include the skew-normal distribution as a special case. In this paper, we explore the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to develop a Bayesian analysis in multivariate measurement errors models. We propose the use of skew-normal/independent distributions to model the unobserved value of the covariates (latent variable) and symmetric normal/independent distributions for the random errors term, providing an appealing robust alternative to the usual symmetric process in multivariate measurement errors models. Among the distributions that belong to this class of distributions, we examine univariate and multivariate versions of the skew-normal, skew-t, skew-slash and skew-contaminated normal distributions. The results and methods are applied to a real data set.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new class of bivariate distributions whose marginals are beta-generated distributions. Copulas are employed to construct this bivariate extension of the beta-generated distributions. It is shown that when Archimedean copulas and convex beta generators are used in generating bivariate distributions, the copulas of the resulting distributions also belong to the Archimedean family. The dependence of the proposed bivariate distributions is examined. Simulation results for beta generators and an application to financial risk management are presented.  相似文献

A class of bivariate continuous-discrete distributions is proposed to fit Poisson dynamic models in a single unified framework via bivariate mixture transition distributions (BMTDs). Potential advantages of this class over the current models include its ability to capture stretches, bursts and nonlinear patterns characterized by Internet network traffic, high-frequency financial data and many others. It models the inter-arrival times and the number of arrivals (marks) in a single unified model which benefits from the dependence structure of the data. The continuous marginal distributions of this class include as special cases the exponential, gamma, Weibull and Rayleigh distributions (for the inter-arrival times), whereas the discrete marginal distributions are geometric and negative binomial. The conditional distributions are Poisson and Erlang. Maximum-likelihood estimation is discussed and parameter estimates are obtained using an expectation–maximization algorithm, while the standard errors are estimated using the missing information principle. It is shown via real data examples that the proposed BMTD models appear to capture data features better than other competing models.  相似文献

In this paper, form-invariant weighted distributions are considered in an exponential family. The class of bivariate distribution with invariant property is identified under exponential weight function. The class includes some of the custom bivariate models. The form-invariant multivariate normal distributions are obtained under a quadratic weight function.  相似文献

In this article, we derive a general class of distributions and establish its relationship to χ2 distribution. The proposed class includes normal, inverse Gaussian, lognormal, gamma, Rayleigh, and Maxwell distributions. Various statistical properties of the class are discussed. Some applications of the class are given.  相似文献

Extremes of independent observations are considered when the assumption of identical distributions is not justified. In this case, one might fit a distribution function from the Mejzler class, which is much wider than the class of extreme value distributions.  相似文献
