Cross-validation has been widely used in the context of statistical linear models and multivariate data analysis. Recently, technological advancements give possibility of collecting new types of data that are in the form of curves. Statistical procedures for analysing these data, which are of infinite dimension, have been provided by functional data analysis. In functional linear regression, using statistical smoothing, estimation of slope and intercept parameters is generally based on functional principal components analysis (FPCA), that allows for finite-dimensional analysis of the problem. The estimators of the slope and intercept parameters in this context, proposed by Hall and Hosseini-Nasab [On properties of functional principal components analysis, J. R. Stat. Soc. Ser. B: Stat. Methodol. 68 (2006), pp. 109–126], are based on FPCA, and depend on a smoothing parameter that can be chosen by cross-validation. The cross-validation criterion, given there, is time-consuming and hard to compute. In this work, we approximate this cross-validation criterion by such another criterion so that we can turn to a multivariate data analysis tool in some sense. Then, we evaluate its performance numerically. We also treat a real dataset, consisting of two variables; temperature and the amount of precipitation, and estimate the regression coefficients for the former variable in a model predicting the latter one.  相似文献

There has been substantial recent attention on problems involving a functional linear regression model with scalar response. Among them, there have been few works dealing with asymptotic distribution of prediction in functional linear regression models. In recent literature, the centeral limit theorem for prediction has been discussed, but the proof and conditions under which the random bias terms for a fixed predictor converge to zero have been ignored so that the impact of these terms on the convergence of the prediction has not been well understood. Clarifying the proof and conditions under which the bias terms converge to zero, we show that the asymptotic distribution of the prediction is normal. Furthermore, we have derived those results related to other terms that already obtained by others, under milder conditions. Finally, we conduct a simulation study to investigate performance of the asymptotic distribution under various parameter settings.  相似文献

We provide theoretical insights into component identification in a separable nonlinear least-squares problem in which the model is a linear combination of nonlinear functions (called components in this paper). Within this research, we assume that the number of components is unknown. The objective of this paper is to understand the limits of component discovery under the assumed model. We focus on two aspects. One is sensitivity analysis referring to the ability of separating regression components from noise. The second is resolution analysis referring to the ability of de-mixing components that have similar location parameters. We use a wavelet transformation that allows to zoom in at different levels of details in the observed data. We further apply these theoretical insights to provide a road map on how to detect components in more realistic settings such as a two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance experiment for protein structure determination.  相似文献

We extend four tests common in classical regression – Wald, score, likelihood ratio and F tests – to functional linear regression, for testing the null hypothesis, that there is no association between a scalar response and a functional covariate. Using functional principal component analysis, we re-express the functional linear model as a standard linear model, where the effect of the functional covariate can be approximated by a finite linear combination of the functional principal component scores. In this setting, we consider application of the four traditional tests. The proposed testing procedures are investigated theoretically for densely observed functional covariates when the number of principal components diverges. Using the theoretical distribution of the tests under the alternative hypothesis, we develop a procedure for sample size calculation in the context of functional linear regression. The four tests are further compared numerically for both densely and sparsely observed noisy functional data in simulation experiments and using two real data applications.  相似文献

We compare the partial least squares (PLS) and the principal component analysis (PCA), in a general case in which the existence of a true linear regression is not assumed. We prove under mild conditions that PLS and PCA are equivalent, to within a first-order approximation, hence providing a theoretical explanation for empirical findings reported by other researchers. Next, we assume the existence of a true linear regression equation and obtain asymptotic formulas for the bias and variance of the PLS parameter estimator  相似文献

In functional linear regression, one conventional approach is to first perform functional principal component analysis (FPCA) on the functional predictor and then use the first few leading functional principal component (FPC) scores to predict the response variable. The leading FPCs estimated by the conventional FPCA stand for the major source of variation of the functional predictor, but these leading FPCs may not be mostly correlated with the response variable, so the prediction accuracy of the functional linear regression model may not be optimal. In this paper, we propose a supervised version of FPCA by considering the correlation of the functional predictor and response variable. It can automatically estimate leading FPCs, which represent the major source of variation of the functional predictor and are simultaneously correlated with the response variable. Our supervised FPCA method is demonstrated to have a better prediction accuracy than the conventional FPCA method by using one real application on electroencephalography (EEG) data and three carefully designed simulation studies.  相似文献

Abstract. We review and extend some statistical tools that have proved useful for analysing functional data. Functional data analysis primarily is designed for the analysis of random trajectories and infinite‐dimensional data, and there exists a need for the development of adequate statistical estimation and inference techniques. While this field is in flux, some methods have proven useful. These include warping methods, functional principal component analysis, and conditioning under Gaussian assumptions for the case of sparse data. The latter is a recent development that may provide a bridge between functional and more classical longitudinal data analysis. Besides presenting a brief review of functional principal components and functional regression, we develop some concepts for estimating functional principal component scores in the sparse situation. An extension of the so‐called generalized functional linear model to the case of sparse longitudinal predictors is proposed. This extension includes functional binary regression models for longitudinal data and is illustrated with data on primary biliary cirrhosis.  相似文献

This paper tries first to introduce and motivate the methodology of multivariate calibration. Next a review is given, mostly avoiding technicalities, of the somewhat messy theory of the subject. Two approaches are distinguished: the estimation approach (controlled calibration) and the prediction approach (natural calibration). Among problems discussed are the choice of estimator, the choice of confidence region, methodology for handling situations with more variables than observations, near-collinearities (with counter-measures like ridge type regression, principal components regression, partial least squares regression and continuum regression), pretreatment of data, and cross-validation vs true prediction. Examples discussed in detail concern estimation of the age of a rhinoceros from its horn lengths (low-dimensional), and nitrate prediction in waste-water from high-dimensional spectroscopic measurements.  相似文献

In principal component analysis (PCA), it is crucial to know how many principal components (PCs) should be retained in order to account for most of the data variability. A class of “objective” rules for finding this quantity is the class of cross-validation (CV) methods. In this work we compare three CV techniques showing how the performance of these methods depends on the covariance matrix structure. Finally we propose a rule for the choice of the “best” CV method and give an application to real data.  相似文献

The authors define a class of “partially linear single‐index” survival models that are more flexible than the classical proportional hazards regression models in their treatment of covariates. The latter enter the proposed model either via a parametric linear form or a nonparametric single‐index form. It is then possible to model both linear and functional effects of covariates on the logarithm of the hazard function and if necessary, to reduce the dimensionality of multiple covariates via the single‐index component. The partially linear hazards model and the single‐index hazards model are special cases of the proposed model. The authors develop a likelihood‐based inference to estimate the model components via an iterative algorithm. They establish an asymptotic distribution theory for the proposed estimators, examine their finite‐sample behaviour through simulation, and use a set of real data to illustrate their approach.  相似文献

In this article, we compare three residuals based on the deviance component in generalised log-gamma regression models with censored observations. For different parameter settings, sample sizes and censoring percentages, various simulation studies are performed and the empirical distribution of each residual is displayed and compared with the standard normal distribution. For all cases studied, the empirical distributions of the proposed residuals are in general symmetric around zero, but only a martingale-type residual presented negligible kurtosis for the majority of the cases studied. These studies suggest that the residual analysis usually performed in normal linear regression models can be straightforwardly extended for the martingale-type residual in generalised log-gamma regression models with censored data. A lifetime data set is analysed under log-gamma regression models and a model checking based on the martingale-type residual is performed.  相似文献

We study regression estimation when the explanatory variable is functional. Nonparametric estimates of the regression operator have been recently introduced. They depend on a smoothing factor which controls its behavior, and the aim of our work is to construct some data-driven criterion for choosing this smoothing parameter. The criterion can be formulated in terms of a functional version of cross-validation ideas. Under mild assumptions on the unknown regression operator, it is seen that this rule is asymptotically optimal. As by-products of this result, we state some asymptotic equivalences for several measures of accuracy for nonparametric estimate of the regression operator. We also present general inequalities for bounding moments of random sums involving functional variables. Finally, a short simulation study is carried out to illustrate the behavior of our method for finite samples.  相似文献

In this paper, a new estimation procedure based on composite quantile regression and functional principal component analysis (PCA) method is proposed for the partially functional linear regression models (PFLRMs). The proposed estimation method can simultaneously estimate both the parametric regression coefficients and functional coefficient components without specification of the error distributions. The proposed estimation method is shown to be more efficient empirically for non-normal random error, especially for Cauchy error, and almost as efficient for normal random errors. Furthermore, based on the proposed estimation procedure, we use the penalized composite quantile regression method to study variable selection for parametric part in the PFLRMs. Under certain regularity conditions, consistency, asymptotic normality, and Oracle property of the resulting estimators are derived. Simulation studies and a real data analysis are conducted to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed methods.  相似文献

Non-parametric Quantile Regression with Censored Data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.  Censored regression models have received a great deal of attention in both the theoretical and applied statistics literature. Here, we consider a model in which the response variable is censored but not the covariates. We propose a new estimator of the conditional quantiles based on the local linear method, and give an algorithm for its numerical implementation. We study its asymptotic properties and evaluate its performance on simulated data sets.  相似文献

Summary.  Compared with the classical backfitting of Buja, Hastie and Tibshirani, the smooth backfitting estimator (SBE) of Mammen, Linton and Nielsen not only provides complete asymptotic theory under weaker conditions but is also more efficient, robust and easier to calculate. However, the original paper describing the SBE method is complex and the practical as well as the theoretical advantages of the method have still neither been recognized nor accepted by the statistical community. We focus on a clear presentation of the idea, the main theoretical results and practical aspects like implementation and simplification of the algorithm. We introduce a feasible cross-validation procedure and apply it to the problem of data-driven bandwidth choice for the SBE. By simulations it is shown that the SBE and our cross-validation work very well indeed. In particular, the SBE is less affected by sparseness of data in high dimensional regression problems or strongly correlated designs. The SBE has reasonable performance even in 100-dimensional additive regression problems.  相似文献

Summary. We propose a class of semiparametric functional regression models to describe the influence of vector-valued covariates on a sample of response curves. Each observed curve is viewed as the realization of a random process, composed of an overall mean function and random components. The finite dimensional covariates influence the random components of the eigenfunction expansion through single-index models that include unknown smooth link and variance functions. The parametric components of the single-index models are estimated via quasi-score estimating equations with link and variance functions being estimated nonparametrically. We obtain several basic asymptotic results. The functional regression models proposed are illustrated with the analysis of a data set consisting of egg laying curves for 1000 female Mediterranean fruit-flies (medflies).  相似文献

In this paper, we compare three residuals to assess departures from the error assumptions as well as to detect outlying observations in log-Burr XII regression models with censored observations. These residuals can also be used for the log-logistic regression model, which is a special case of the log-Burr XII regression model. For different parameter settings, sample sizes and censoring percentages, various simulation studies are performed and the empirical distribution of each residual is displayed and compared with the standard normal distribution. These studies suggest that the residual analysis usually performed in normal linear regression models can be straightforwardly extended to the modified martingale-type residual in log-Burr XII regression models with censored data.  相似文献

Variance estimation is a fundamental problem in statistical modelling. In ultrahigh dimensional linear regression where the dimensionality is much larger than the sample size, traditional variance estimation techniques are not applicable. Recent advances in variable selection in ultrahigh dimensional linear regression make this problem accessible. One of the major problems in ultrahigh dimensional regression is the high spurious correlation between the unobserved realized noise and some of the predictors. As a result, the realized noises are actually predicted when extra irrelevant variables are selected, leading to serious underestimate of the level of noise. We propose a two-stage refitted procedure via a data splitting technique, called refitted cross-validation, to attenuate the influence of irrelevant variables with high spurious correlations. Our asymptotic results show that the resulting procedure performs as well as the oracle estimator, which knows in advance the mean regression function. The simulation studies lend further support to our theoretical claims. The naive two-stage estimator and the plug-in one-stage estimators using the lasso and smoothly clipped absolute deviation are also studied and compared. Their performances can be improved by the reffitted cross-validation method proposed.  相似文献

It has been found that, for a variety of probability distributions, there is a surprising linear relation between mode, mean, and median. In this article, the relation between mode, mean, and median regression functions is assumed to follow a simple parametric model. We propose a semiparametric conditional mode (mode regression) estimation for an unknown (unimodal) conditional distribution function in the context of regression model, so that any m-step-ahead mean and median forecasts can then be substituted into the resultant model to deliver m-step-ahead mode prediction. In the semiparametric model, Least Squared Estimator (LSEs) for the model parameters and the simultaneous estimation of the unknown mean and median regression functions by the local linear kernel method are combined to infer about the parametric and nonparametric components of the proposed model. The asymptotic normality of these estimators is derived, and the asymptotic distribution of the parameter estimates is also given and is shown to follow usual parametric rates in spite of the presence of the nonparametric component in the model. These results are applied to obtain a data-based test for the dependence of mode regression over mean and median regression under a regression model.  相似文献

RATES OF CONVERGENCE IN SEMI-PARAMETRIC MODELLING OF LONGITUDINAL DATA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We consider the problem of semi-parametric regression modelling when the data consist of a collection of short time series for which measurements within series are correlated. The objective is to estimate a regression function of the form E[Y(t) | x] =x'ß+μ(t), where μ(.) is an arbitrary, smooth function of time t, and x is a vector of explanatory variables which may or may not vary with t. For the non-parametric part of the estimation we use a kernel estimator with fixed bandwidth h. When h is chosen without reference to the data we give exact expressions for the bias and variance of the estimators for β and μ(t) and an asymptotic analysis of the case in which the number of series tends to infinity whilst the number of measurements per series is held fixed. We also report the results of a small-scale simulation study to indicate the extent to which the theoretical results continue to hold when h is chosen by a data-based cross-validation method.  相似文献
