A class of “optimal”U-statistics type nonparametric test statistics is proposed for the one-sample location problem by considering a kernel depending on a constant a and all possible (distinct) subsamples of size two from a sample of n independent and identically distributed observations. The “optimal” choice of a is determined by the underlying distribution. The proposed class includes the Sign and the modified Wilcoxon signed-rank statistics as special cases. It is shown that any “optimal” member of the class performs better in terms of Pitman efficiency relative to the Sign and Wilcoxon-signed rank statistics. The effect of deviation of chosen a from the “optimal” a on Pitman efficiency is also examined. A Hodges-Lehmann type point estimator of the location parameter corresponding to the proposed “optimal” test-statistics is also defined and studied in this paper.  相似文献

This paper proposes a class of non‐parametric test procedures for testing the null hypothesis that two distributions, F and G, are equal versus the alternative hypothesis that F is ‘more NBU (new better than used) at specified age t0’ than G. Using Hoeffding's two‐sample U‐statistic theorem, it establishes the asymptotic normality of the test statistics and produces a class of asymptotically distribution‐free tests. Pitman asymptotic efficacies of the proposed tests are calculated with respect to the location and shape parameters. A numerical example is provided for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new class of distribution-free tests for testing the homogeneity of several location parameters against ordered alternatives. The proposed class of test statistics is based on a linear combination of two-sample U-statistics based on subsample extremes. The mean and variance of the test statistic are obtained under the null hypothesis as well as under the sequence of local alternatives. The optimal weights are also determined. It is shown via Pitman ARE comparisons that the proposed class of test statistics performs better than its competitor tests in case of heavy-tailed and long-tailed distributions  相似文献

A test for exchangeability of copulas for arbitrary dimensions is proposed, generalising and extending a result by Genest et al. [(2012), ‘Tests of Symmetry for Bivariate Copulas’, Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 64, 811–834]. Three test statistics together with some modifications are presented and their asymptotical behaviour is analysed. Empirical p-values are computed by using a bootstrap-procedure proposed by Rémillard and Scaillet [(2009), ‘Testing for Equality between Two Copulas’, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 100, 377–386] and suggested by Bücher and Dette [(2010), ‘A Note on Bootstrap Approximations for the Empirical Copula Process’, Statistics & Probability Letters, 80, 1925–1932], based on a multiplier central limit theorem by van der Vaart and Wellner [(1996), Weak Convergence and Empirical Processes, Springer Series in Statistics, New York: Springer]. Finally a simulation study compares various versions of the proposed tests.  相似文献

This paper presents a method of fitting factorial models to recidivism data consisting of the (possibly censored) time to ‘fail’ of individuals, in order to test for differences between groups. Here ‘failure’ means rearrest, reconviction or reincarceration, etc. A proportion P of the sample is assumed to be ‘susceptible’ to failure, i.e. to fail eventually, while the remaining 1-P are ‘immune’, and never fail. Thus failure may be described in two ways: by the probability P that an individual ever fails again (‘probability of recidivism’), and by the rate of failure Λ for the susceptibles. Related analyses have been proposed previously: this paper argues that a factorial approach, as opposed to regression approaches advocated previously, offers simplified analysis and interpretation of these kinds of data. The methods proposed, which are also applicable in medical statistics and reliability analyses, are demonstrated on data sets in which the factors are Parole Type (released to freedom or on parole), Age group (≤ 20 years, 20–40 years, > 40 years), and Marital Status. The outcome (failure) is a return to prison following first or second release.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new minimax methodology that implies a faster decreasing minimax lower bound that is attainable by a data-driven estimator, and the same estimator is also minimax under the classical approach. The recommendation is to test performance of estimators via the new and classical minimax approaches.  相似文献

In this article, we propose two test statistics for testing the underlying serial correlation in a partially linear single-index model Y = η(Z τα) + X τβ + ? when X is measured with additive error. The proposed test statistics are shown to have asymptotic normal or chi-squared distributions under the null hypothesis of no serial correlation. Monte Carlo experiments are also conducted to illustrate the finite sample performance of the proposed test statistics. The simulation results confirm that these statistics perform satisfactorily in both estimated sizes and powers.  相似文献

The choice of multi-state models is natural in analysis of survival data, e.g., when the subjects in a study pass through different states like ‘healthy’, ‘in a state of remission’, ‘relapse’ or ‘dead’ in a health related quality of life study. Competing risks is another common instance of the use of multi-state models. Statistical inference for such event history data can be carried out by assuming a stochastic process model. Under such a setting, comparison of the event history data generated by two different treatments calls for testing equality of the corresponding transition probability matrices. The present paper proposes solution to this class of problems by assuming a non-homogeneous Markov process to describe the transitions among the health states. A class of test statistics are derived for comparison of \(k\) treatments by using a ‘weight process’. This class, in particular, yields generalisations of the log-rank, Gehan, Peto–Peto and Harrington–Fleming tests. For an intrinsic comparison of the treatments, the ‘leave-one-out’ jackknife method is employed for identifying influential observations. The proposed methods are then used to develop the Kolmogorov–Smirnov type supremum tests corresponding to the various extended tests. To demonstrate the usefulness of the test procedures developed, a simulation study was carried out and an application to the Trial V data provided by International Breast Cancer Study Group is discussed.  相似文献

We consider multiple comparison test procedures among treatment effects in a randomized block design. We propose closed testing procedures based on maximum values of some two-sample t test statistics and based on F test statistics. It is shown that the proposed procedures are more powerful than single-step procedures and the REGW (Ryan/Einot–Gabriel/Welsch)-type tests. Next, we consider the randomized block design under simple ordered restrictions of treatment effects. We propose closed testing procedures based on maximum values of two-sample one-sided t test statistics and based on Batholomew’s statistics for all pairwise comparisons of treatment effects. Although single-step multiple comparison procedures are utilized in general, the power of these procedures is low for a large number of groups. The closed testing procedures stated in the present article are more powerful than the single-step procedures. Simulation studies are performed under the null hypothesis and some alternative hypotheses. In this studies, the proposed procedures show a good performance.  相似文献

It is well known that the Pearson statistic \(\chi ^{2}\) can perform poorly in studying the association between ordinal categorical variables. Taguchi’s and Hirotsu’s statistics have been introduced in the literature as simple alternatives to Pearson’s chi-squared test for contingency tables with ordered categorical variables. The aim of this paper is to shed new light on these statistics, stressing their interpretations and characteristics, providing in this way new and different interpretations of these statistics. Moreover, a theoretical scheme is developed showing the links between the different proposals and classes of cumulative chi-squared statistical tests, starting from a unifying index of heterogeneity, unalikeability and variability measures. Users of statistics may find it attractive to understand well the different proposals. Some decompositions of both statistics are also highlighted. This paper presents a case study of optimizing the polysilicon deposition process in a very large-scale integrated circuit, to identify the optimal combination of factor levels. It is obtained by means of the information coming from a correspondence analysis based on Taguchi’s statistic and regression models for binary dependent variables. A new optimal combination of factor levels is obtained, different from many others proposed in the literature for this data.  相似文献

We consider the problem of detecting a ‘bump’ in the intensity of a Poisson process or in a density. We analyze two types of likelihood ratio‐based statistics, which allow for exact finite sample inference and asymptotically optimal detection: The maximum of the penalized square root of log likelihood ratios (‘penalized scan’) evaluated over a certain sparse set of intervals and a certain average of log likelihood ratios (‘condensed average likelihood ratio’). We show that penalizing the square root of the log likelihood ratio — rather than the log likelihood ratio itself — leads to a simple penalty term that yields optimal power. The thus derived penalty may prove useful for other problems that involve a Brownian bridge in the limit. The second key tool is an approximating set of intervals that is rich enough to allow for optimal detection, but which is also sparse enough to allow justifying the validity of the penalization scheme simply via the union bound. This results in a considerable simplification in the theoretical treatment compared with the usual approach for this type of penalization technique, which requires establishing an exponential inequality for the variation of the test statistic. Another advantage of using the sparse approximating set is that it allows fast computation in nearly linear time. We present a simulation study that illustrates the superior performance of the penalized scan and of the condensed average likelihood ratio compared with the standard scan statistic.  相似文献

For the two-sample location problem with continuous data we consider a general class of tests, all members of it are based on U-statistics. The asymptotic efficacies are investigated in detail. We construct an adaptive test where all statistics involved are suitably chosen U-statistics. It is shown that the proposed adaptive test has good asymptotic and finite sample power properties.  相似文献

Tests for normality can be divided into two groups - those based upon a function of the empirical distribution function and those based upon a function of the original observations. The latter group of statistics test spherical symmetry and not necessarily normality. If the distribution is completely specified then the first group can be used to test for ‘spherical’ normality. However, if the distribution is incompletely specified and F‘‘xi - x’/s’ is used these test statistics also test sphericity rather than normality. A Monte Carlo study was conducted for the completely specified case, to investigate the sensitivity of the distance tests to departures from normality when the alternative distributions are non-normal spherically symmetric laws. R.M. Hollander, D.H. Park and F. Proschan [A class of life distributions for aging, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 81 (1986) 91–95] introduced the concept of the larger class of life distributions called new better than used of specified age. In practice, one might be interested in the new better than used behaviour at an unknown but estimable age t0. Here, we investigate the testing of new better than used of specified age t0 (NBU-t0) alternatives. A class of test statistics for testing NBU-t0 (t0 is known) based on a U-statistic whose kernel depends on sub-sample minima is proposed. A member of the class of tests proposed by N. Ebrahimi and M. Habbibullah [Testing whether the survival distribution is new better than used of specified age, Biometrika 77 (1990) 212–215] for this problem belongs to the class of tests proposed here. The distributional properties of the class of test statistics are studied. The performances of a few members of the proposed class of tests are studied in terms of Pitman asymptotic relative efficiency. The Pitman ARE values show that the members of the class perform well in comparison with the N. Ebrahimi and M. Habbibullah [Testing whether the survival distribution is new better than used of specified age, Biometrika 77 (1990) 212–215] tests. The proposed class of tests is shown to be consistent for NBU-t0 alternatives.  相似文献

Here we use the idea in Williams (1984) to illustrate the construction and use of ancillary statistics to make inference about p. A generalized Holm’s procedure is proposed which can reject several null hypotheses at each step sequentially and also strongly controls the family-wise error rate regardless of the dependence of individual test statistics. Residual life (RL) estimation plays an important role in prognostics and health management. In operating conditions, components usually experience stresses continuously varying over time, which have an impact on the degradation processes. This paper investigates a Wiener process model to track and predict the RL under time-varying conditions. The item-to-item variation is captured by the drift parameter and the degradation characteristic of the whole population is described by the diffusion parameter. The bootstrap method and Bayesian theorem are employed to estimate and update the distribution parameters of ‘a’ and ‘b’, which are the coefficients of the linear drifting process in the degradation model. Once new degradation information becomes available, the RL distributions considering the future operating condition are derived. The proposed method is tested on Lithium-ion battery devices under three levels of charging/discharging rates. The results are further validated by a simulation method.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the problem of testing the hypothesis on whether the density f of a random variable on a sphere belongs to a given parametric class of densities. We propose two test statistics based on the L2 and L1 distances between a non‐parametric density estimator adapted to circular data and a smoothed version of the specified density. The asymptotic distribution of the L2 test statistic is provided under the null hypothesis and contiguous alternatives. We also consider a bootstrap method to approximate the distribution of both test statistics. Through a simulation study, we explore the moderate sample performance of the proposed tests under the null hypothesis and under different alternatives. Finally, the procedure is illustrated by analysing a real data set based on wind direction measurements.  相似文献
